BECAUSE COMMUNITY MATTERS
YOUR LIBRARY AND YOU Libraries are a familiar and essential part of our communities, but their roles continue to change. We want to know: How often do you use your local library - and which branch(es) do you use? How do you use it - online, in person - and what are your favorite and most-used library services?
How has your local library changed in the last 510-15 years? What changes do you see for libraries in the future? Email your comments to us - rmaloney@communitypress.com. Please include your name, community of and daytime residence phone number, in case we need to contact you.

PRICE HILL – The neighborhood’s newest green space and gathering place is nearly finished. St. Lawrence Square, a park next to St. Lawrence Church at the corner of Warsaw and St. Lawrence avenues, will soon be ready for residents to enjoy. The park, developed by Price Hill Will and the St. Lawrence Square Committee, replaces the vacant lot left after the former Eagle Savings Bank building burned down about six years ago. “It’s looking more and more complete,” Jay Kratz, Price Hill Will’s director of real estate development, said. Most of the construction is finished, and he said the last major feature to be

Mercy High School expanding two academic programs WESTWOOD – To further enrich the opportunities offered to Mother of Mercy High School students, the school is expanding two popular academic programs – Leading Scholars and the Jon Peterson Program. The expansion is in support of Mercy’s mission to inspire, educate and empower young women to become faith-filled leaders. “At Mercy we strive for ‘Individual Excellence,’ to meet each student where she is and help her grow to her full potential,” Principal Dave Mueller said in a press release. “These enhancements are our most recent steps toward that goal.” Beginning with the 2016-2017 school year, Mercy’s Leading Scholars Program will be open to all students who score 85 percent or higher on the High School Placement Test. These students will also qualify for academic scholarships.

In being selected for this group, they will have opportunities to supplement their already challenging course work with enrichment activities. The special offerings are meant to stretch critical and creative thinking and prepare students to apply for selective colleges, something that excites Mercy parents. “Being in the program has kept Tori focused academically and pushed her to learn about things that she’d otherwise not have had access to,” said Gina Douthat, whose daughter is a freshman. “The exposure to different experiences and careers will give her a broader base when she’s beginning to consider her plans for the future.” This past fall, the Leading Scholars had the opportunity to go to iSpace Camp, an interacSee MERCY, Page 2A
