MIAMI TWP. — Ten graduates of Milford High School will be honored Sept. 29 at the Milford Schools Foundation’s annual Night of the Stars dinner. The evening also is a fundraiser for the foundation, which raises money to support programs at Milford schools. Last year’s Night of the Stars raised more than $30,000, said Mary Anne Will, president of the Milford Schools Foundation. “We’re hoping to do better this year,” she said. In addition to the money raised at the dinner, the foundation raised another $20,000 throughout the year, for a total of more than $50,000, Will said. McCallum That money was used to award mini-grants to staff members at Milford schools, provide help for field trips, classroom speakers, cultural events, athletics and scholarships for graduating seniors. The 2012 Night of the Stars dinner will be at RSVP, 453 Wards Corner Road, Miami Township. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with dinner at 6 p.m., a live auction at 7:45 p.m. and the honoring of the alumni at 8 p.m. The 2012 alumni honorees: » Jeff Lykins, class of 1978, president and CEO of Lykins Cos. » Jim Terrell, class of 1983, Olympic and world champion canoeist. » Garold Shaw, class of 1948, patriarch of the Shaw Farms family. » Roger Preston Smith, class of 1968, Broadway actor. » Dr. Jeffrey Book, class of 1992, noted oceanographer. » Maj. Gen. Melvin L. Burch, class of 1967, West Virginia National Guard. » Tricia Ross, class of 1986, associate vice president at The Julliard School. Posthumous honorees: » Capt. John L. Foote, class of 1938, World War II bombardier and navigator.

‘MIDDLE’ GROUND IN CAMPAIGN

By Gannett News Service MILFORD — Vice President Joe Biden told hundreds here Sunday the biggest difference between President Barack Obama and his rival, Mitt Romney, is that Obama actually believes in the middle class. “I found it fascinating how the new Republican Party discovered the middle class at the convention,” Biden said. “It was like, ‘Eureka.’ “My dad would say to us, ‘Don’t tell me your values, show me your budget. I will tell you what you value,’ ” Biden said. Biden said a closer look at the Republican agenda shows plans for massive cuts to Medicare, massive cuts to Social Security,

massive cuts to early education. “Why are they doing it?” he said. “They have to. They need to do it to pay for the massive tax cuts they will give to the very wealthy.” Republican reaction was swift. “Once again Joe Biden has illustrated that he is incapable of talking honestly or substantively about the most important issues affecting Ohio workers and families,” Romney campaign spokesman Christopher Maloney said. “…It appears as though he is willing to say anything to divert attention away from the Obama administration’s failed policies, which
