Miami Twp. officials buy land for fire station on Sugar Camp By Keith BieryGolick kbierygolick@communitypress.com
MIAMI TWP. — The location of a new fire station in Miami Township has been set. The township trustees approved a contract to purchase 1.12 acres of land on Sugar Camp Road near Ohio 131 at their regular July 16 meeting. “It’s been a very lengthy process,” said Larry Fronk, township administrator. “We were negotiating the contract right up until 5 p.m. today.” The township’s fire and ems have been working internally for the past two years to determine the best spot for a new station, Fronk said. “This part of Miami Township has grown tremendously,” he said, citing the construction of Meadowview Elementary and Miami Meadows park as new additions. “We had an opportunity to purchase land at a location our data was telling us ... the station needs to be.” Officials will use tax increment financing (TIF) funds to purchase the commerciallyzoned property for $275,000, said Joe Braun, township law director. TIF funds also will be used to construct the new station,

Braun said. “In addition to the purchasing property, we’ve planned for the future,” he said. Even if adjacent property is Braun developed, the contract granted easements to allow for proper signage and changes to the Ohio 131 and Sugar Camp Road intersection, Braun Schultz said. A turn lane could be added to make it easier for trucks to come in and out of the station, he said. “We don’t know when construction will occur,” Fronk said. The trustees heard complaints about slow response times from a resident at their regular April 16 meeting. “For the past few years, we’ve had residents claim it’s taken over 20 minutes (for you) to get there,” said Brad Duncan, a resident of White Gate Farm. “Personally, I called 911 for my son in 2010 and wasn’t satisfied with the response.”

White Gate Farm is located off Dry Run Road, about half a mile from Ohio 131. Trustee Karl Schultz said 85 Fronk percent of the township’s budget goes toward safety services. “I look forward to the future as we move into the (southeastern) area of the Whitworth township and help our citizens in that area,” Schultz said. The department currently has three stations: 6492 Branch Hill Guinea Pike, 1154 U.S. 50 and 5888 McPicken Drive. Fire Chief Jim Whitworth previously said the station on McPicken Drive services the White Gate Farm community, and also is the busiest station. “While it will be some time before there is visible progress, rest assured that the project will improve response to the southeast area of the township,” Whitworth said in a press release.
