Miami Twp. gets sidewalks By Mary Dannemiller

mdannemiller@communitypress.com

After years of planning, construction will finally begin on a sidewalk on Buckwheat Road from Deblin Drive to Community Park and from Linden Creek Drive to Mulberry Elementary School Monday, June 7. The project was made possible by a Transportation Enhancement Grant from the Ohio Department of Transportation, said Assistant Township Administrator Jeff Wright. “This money is available for projects that encourage alternative

means of travel within a community,” he said. Wright said ODOT entered into a contract with R.A. Miller Construction Co. for about $133,000 and the township paid about $26,000 as its match. Township Administrator Larry Fronk said Mulberry Elementary students will be able to use the sidewalks when they return to school in September. “It’s about a 45-day project, weather permitting,” he said. “It will be done in plenty of time before school starts next year.” Fronk has been working with residents, the Ohio Department of Transportation, the Clermont

County Engineer’s Office and several other officials for four years to bring sidewalks to the township. “It’s very rewarding,” he said. “I’m very pleased that we can finally get the sidewalk constructed. Many residents in that area have been asking when we’re going to build them so it’s rewarding that we’re now reaching the end and the sidewalks will be built.” Traffic along Buckwheat should not be affected by the construction crew, who will be staging at Community Park. “I’ve been told they can do most of the work off the side of the road so two lanes of traffic

should be open at all times,” Fronk said. Miami Township Trustee Karl Schultz said the sidewalks will make it safer for students to get to and from school. “Walking is good, but walking is great if it’s safe,” he said. “The safety aspect of it is paramount.” The Buckwheat construction is just one part of the township’s plan for sidewalks. A project for sidewalks on Ohio 28 was recently awarded a Transportation Enhancement Grant and will be bid after the money becomes available Thursday, July 1.

Hundreds to volunteer during ShareFest By Kellie Geist kgeist@communitypress.com

Hundreds of volunteers from nine churches will be spending a few days next week working on projects ranging from painting the skate park in Miami Township to cleaning the chapel at Sem Villa in Milford. ShareFest, a three-day volunteer extravaganza, will be Thursday, June 10, Friday, June 11, and Saturday, June 12. Jim Eckels, project coordinator for ShareFest, said this will be the fourth year for the event. When ShareFest started in Milford and Miami Township, members from five churches were involved. “It has really grown,” Eckels said. “ShareFest gives churches an opportunity to reach out to the community, no strings attached. We’re just able to go out, help our neighbors and be the hands and feet of God.” A number of organizations and groups nominate projects for the ShareFest volunteers to do during the event. All projects are done at no cost. This year, other projects include mulching at all the Milford schools, and landscaping and restaining the gazebo at the Promont House Museum. Even before ShareFest starts, they clean up after the Frontier Days Parade. Volunteers also will be helping individual residents, mostly seniors, with odd jobs such as painting and landscaping. Many of these seniors were nominated by Clermont Senior Services, Eckels said. “Those type of projects don’t take long to do, but they give us an opportunity to interact and spend time with these seniors. We want to let them know somebody cares,” he said. To close ShareFest, the volunteers will hold the annual ShareFest Village from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 12, at Milford

New this year, ShareFest will hold a Celebration Service at 7 p.m. Sunday, June 13. There will be photos, videos and testimony. Junior High School, 5735 Pleasant Hill Road. During the village, there will be a blood drive, free car wash, free blood pressure and vision checks, free haircuts and a yard sale where everything is free. The sale starts at 11 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m. Also, new this year, ShareFest will hold a Celebration Service at 7 p.m. Sunday, June 13, at Faith Church, 5910 Price Road. During the celebration there will be photos, videos and testimony from ShareFest volunteers and people who have been helped. ShareFest Leadership Committee member Rebecca Buckalew said they would really like those helped to attend, if possible. Buckalew said she enjoys participating in ShareFest because of how it builds community. “We try to mix the teams so it’s not just all people from one church on a team. It’s fun to see the churches intermingle and work together while helping serve people,” she said. While ShareFest is currently dedicated to Milford and Miami Township, Buckalew said she would like to see this event be county-wide. As a start, one team this year will be working at Amelia High School. “Our ultimate goal would be that this would spread throughout the county and more churches would join us,” she said. “Every year we get a few more people who are interested and it just continues to grow.” For more information, check out www.faithchurch.net/sharefest/ index.php.
