BECAUSE COMMUNITY MATTERS

Union Township continues to rack up development

Milford historical society wants you to be its Valentine Jeanne Houck jhouck@communitypress.com

The Greater Milford Area Historical Society wants you to be its Valentine. So the historical society is inviting the public to a free Victorian Valentine’s Celebration & Exhibit on Sunday, Feb. 5, at the Promont mansion at 906 Main St.in Milford, which is headquarters for the society. And like some other romantic suitors, the Greater Milford Area Historical Society is presenting a Valentine’s gift for reasons that don’t immediately meet the eye. “We always look for ways to share Promont with the community, and we have an ulterior motive in hoping that folks in the general area will become more familiar with the Greater Milford Area Historical Society – perhaps join the society and take a part in the programming we offer to the community,” said Mary Ward, a spokeswoman for the Greater Milford Area Historical Society. The Victorian Valentine’s Celebration & Exhibit, which is an open house from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., is a first.

John McGraw will continue to be at the wheel of the Union Township Board of Trustees in 2017 and he predicts the year will be another enviable journey of commercial and residential development. “It is a great time to locate in Union Township,” said McGraw, whose fellow trustees recently elected him chairman of the board for the fourth year in a row. Trustee Matt Beamer was named vice chairman of the board, which also includes Trustee Lloyd Acres. “We are experiencing an unprecedented amount of new development and planned growth,” McGraw said. “Hundreds of new jobs are being created and hundreds of millions of dollars are being invested in Union Township - not only in new projects and construction but also old-

“This is a new event for the society,” said Donna Amann, administrator of the Greater Milford Area Historical Society. “We want to celebrate the Valentine’s holiday in a Victorian fashion with appropriate decor and exhibits. “It’s a great way to showcase Promont and invite the public to see the 1865 Italianate mansion – a historic Milford landmark,” Amann said. The Victorian Valentine’s

Celebration & Exhibit will feature Victorian-era Valentine’s decor, historical Valentine’s vignette displays such as a showing of vintage valentines, light refreshments and the display and sale of art by local residents. “We currently have 33 pieces of art from 19 different artists – who are typical participants in the September Art Affaire event – that will be on display and for See MILFORD, Page 2A

We interrupt this movie for the inauguration Community Press Staff Report

Sometimes a patriot has to make sacrifices for the good of other patriots. At least that’s what appeared to be happening the evening of Jan. 20 at the Eastgate Brew & View in Union Township, where management cancelled a showing of “Patriots Day” to accommodate a “Trump Inauguration Celebration” hosted by the Clermont County Republican Party. Instead of showing the movie about the response to the terrorist bombing of the Boston Marathon in 2013, the theater at 4450 Eastgate Square Drive projected Fox News’ coverage of the inauguration ball in Washington, D.C., onto the big screen. “That’s kind of ironic,” said Jordan Jetter of New Richmond, assistant manager at Eastgate Brew & View. The Republicans’ inaugural celebration began at 9 p.m. in Brew & View’s lobby, then moved 30 minutes later to one of the theaters for a party that last-

Some students in the Milford Exempted Village School District were able to watch Donald Trump’s inauguration at school. “At Milford Junior High School we will have the inauguration displayed on large screen TVs in our cafeteria during lunch,” Principal Rob Dunn said last week. “Additionally, the staff will have the opportunity to show it from their classrooms.” Milford High School Principal Josh Kauffman said, “We are not doing anything school-wide, but within some of our classrooms, if the inauguration is related to the content of a course, there could be related activities.” - By Jeanne
