BECAUSE COMMUNITY MATTERS
Stiver spread love in Loveland Marika Lee mlee1@communitypress.com
A dedicated Loveland resident and teacher brightened the Loveland community for years. Marirose Stiver died June 11 at the age of 77. Stiver was a teacher in the Loveland City School District for 37 years. “There are many people in our community who had her as a first- or second-grade teacher when they were in Loveland. In the morning she would often walk to Tiger Stadium and go to the top of the bleachers to watch the sun rise over Loveland,” Superintendent Chad Hilliker said. Hilliker said he first got to
know Stiver when she helped make yard signs when the football team made it to the state championship game in 2014. Stiver was a president of the Loveland Woman’s Club, a member of the Loveland PEO chapter and a volunteer at the Loveland Historical Museum and Loveland Food Pantry. She helped organize donations for those affected by flooding in Loveland, Colorado. She was made a Valentine Lady in 2001. “Marirose was amazing. She was the first person on your doorstep when you moved into an area or started a new position,” said CeeCee Collins, president of the Little Miami River Chamber Alliance that
handles the Valentine program. Stiver sang “A Valentine Like You” at the Valentine Lady Kick off and breakfast every year. “We know she is brightening lives up in heaven the way she did here,” Collins said. Multiple friends, family and former students took to Stiver’s Facebook page to honor her. “Lift all those touched by the life and passing of this truly special lady in prayer. Help us to learn to live without her smile, kind words and friendship,” wrote Janis Fogle, 2014 Valentine Lady. “Marirose was one of the sweetest people I've ever See STIVER, Page 2A

Young love is lost in violent street gangs, with guns and knives in the stage classic “West Side Story” opening at Loveland Stage Company July 6-10. The youth summer theater workshop production directed by Glenna Knapp features a cast of 50-60 area youth from 13-19 years old. “It’s a PG-13 show with violence, gun violence, knife violence, killings, gangs, street kids and all that kind of stuff,” Knapp said. “We had a good group of kids that this will be their last show. What a show to go out on.” Remember this is “West Side Story” a 1961 adaptation of the classic romantic tragedy “Romeo & Juliet.” The story is set on the streets of New York City. The romance is between Tony and Maria. “It’s the modern day, late ’50s early ’60s Romeo & Juliet,” Knapp said. “Tony is a Jet, native-born American. Maria is a native-born Puerto Rican.” The Puerto Ricans immigrated to New York City and the Jets want to fight to keep the streets their turf. The romance between Tony and Maria is caught in the middle of the war between the Sharks led by Bernardo and the Jets led
