Miami summer concerts: Diverse groups

LOVELAND — Liverpool. London. Loveland? The Beatles put the first city on the musical map, the Rolling Stones the second. Now Access Denied, a group with its roots in Loveland High School, is aiming to do the same for the “Sweetheart of Ohio.” The Beatles and the Stones are known to the 17- and 18-year-olds in Access Denied because they have been playing classic rock for years at Battle of the Band competitions, fundraisers, private parties and clubs. But Dylan Bodley (guitars, vocals), Alex Dolezal (keyboards, vocals), Cameron Kahrs (bass) and Dean Lowry (drums, other percussion instruments) are changing things up. The young men of Access Denied have just issued a CD called “Breakthrough” with a dozen songs of totally original material. People can take a listen to songs like “Don’t Take Me Back (Bodley),” “Alcatraz (Dolezal)” and “Change (Kahrs)” when Access Denied performs Sunday, June 10, at the Loveland Summer Concert Series show at Nisbet Park. CDs, which cost $10, will be available for sale — and autographing – there.

Bodley, Dolezal and Kahrs formed Access Denied in 2008, their freshman year at Loveland High School, from which they graduated Saturday, June 2. Lowry, who will be a senior at Loveland High School next school year, joined in 2010. All four young men plan to go to college, but they are not giving up their musical ambitions.

MIAMI TWP. — The U.S. Air Force Military Band and the Cincinnati-based group Midnight on Vine will be among the highlights of the township summer concert series. The concerts are free and held at the Community Park Performance Pavilion, 5951 Buckwheat Road. Recreation Director Krystin Thibodeau said the township is trying some new marketing and advertising this year to get more people interested in the concerts. The township is running advertising banners on the website www.cincinnati.com and half-page ads in the Cincinnati Enquirer to promote the concerts and other events, she said. A large sign also was erected at Community Park to advertise the concerts. “We’re trying to see if we can capture people’s attention,” she said. In addition to the musicians, there will be vendors at this year’s concerts selling refreshments, Thibodeau said.

Dolezal’s father, Russ Dolezal, thinks people will be impressed with the Breakthrough CD. “Their writing is quite advanced, sharing thoughts on society, experiences, graduation and, of course, relationships,” the elder Dolezal said.

LOVELAND — Loveland has hired an Indiana University graduate to the position of management fellow to the city manager’s office for a year. Corey Schmidt obtained his master’s degree in public affairs in May and was admitted into the International City/County Management Association’s prestigious Local Government Management Fellowship program. Forty-two local governments have hosted fellows since the program’s inception in 2004. In 2006, Loveland became the first city in Ohio to host a management fellow. Both the 2006 and 2010 fellows have been made possible by staffing vacancies in the city manager’s office. In Loveland, Schmidt will be exposed to all aspects of city government and will work on a variety of projects including the 2013 budget, the wellness program, performance measurement and the e-newsletter and website.
