T

here were times when Heidi Bright prepared to die after being diagnosed with a terminal cancer in July 2009.

Today Bright delivers a message of hope and healing through her book “Thriver Soup” and speaking to groups.

This is the third traditionally published book by the Milford author.

“It’s sort of like a recipe template for healing,” Bright said. “It’s not a cook book it’s a template for healing.”

Bright’s book addresses healing from every angle: physical, medical, nutritional, social, emotional, mental and spiritual. It is exactly the same approach she used in her own survival and healing.

Highly undifferentiated endometrial sarcoma is a most rare form of uterine sarcoma.

Don Chandler can remember walking in Milford’s Memorial Day parade with his grandfather in the 1950s, when he was in grade school.

So he’s sad that other children won’t get that experience this year - and maybe not after that, either.

For the first time in at least 60 years, American Legion Victor Stier Post 450 in Milford will not sponsor a Memorial Day parade.

Rather than chase that down, Bright utilized her energy for her own survival. The first oncologist she saw offered only one paragraph of information he found online. Her sister works for the FDA and had connections within that organization and the National Cancer Institute. She called on all her friends.

“She got me in touch with the best uterine sarcoma doctors in the world,” said Bright.

That led her to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, where they wanted her to stay for treatments. A wife and mother of two boys, 11 and 13, living in Loveland was not going to Houston for treatments.

asked if they even heard of this diagnosis. Zero hands went up when asked if they knew of anybody diagnosed.

“I have only heard of one person in the entire world who had the same diagnosis,” Bright said.

“I heard of her early on.

I have no idea where she is, or if she’s even still around.”

treatments. Her sister found the Sarcoma Alliance. Dr. Larry Copeland of Ohio State was a highly recommended member of the alliance.

“We decided to go there,” Bright said. “We met him and we both agreed he was the right person for me.”

Between the July diagnosis and the scan for the chemo treatments, she went from one metastatic nodule in her lung, to four. She was already doing lots of alternative treatments including affirmations, visualizations, praying, and people praying for her; everything she knew about and a strict diet. A blood draw showed her albumen (a measure of nutritional status) to be 4.2. Above 3.5 is good, below 2.5 is usually a poor prognosis for someone with cancer.

“I already had a very good nutritional status and here I was with end-stage cancer,” she said. “So I knew diet was not going to save my life.”

Bright says it absolutely did contribute to her healing and survival, but not without medical treatment. She went up to Columbus for chemo treatments every two weeks for 16 treatments.

After that round of chemo, there was still one tumor growing. She began a new different type of chemo treatment which lasted eight

months. The remaining tumor died, but a new tumor was growing. She decided to have it surgically removed and tested.

She had the lung surgery, followed by chemotherapy, which required three to five-day hospital stays every three weeks.

Copeland referred her to Dr. James Pavelka at St. Elizabeth in Edgewood, Kentucky, so she could stay closer to home.

After six treatments a scan showed a one-half inch nodule on the pulmonary vein right next to her heart.

Despite concerns of her oncologist, the surgeon who performed her lung surgery was confident of success. In the midst of all that, Bright and her husband agreed their marriage was over.

with friends and even slept on floors. Five weeks later she had the surgery. The tumor had already grown from a half-inch to 2 1/2 inches.

Bright did not want to know the prognosis.

“They didn’t tell me, but it was pretty clear that I was in trouble,” Bright said. “There were several times when I prepared to die. The stuff was growing, what could I do?”

Six weeks later, at a post-op meeting, she was told how big the tumor had been and to get back on chemo. With no chemo options left, Bright was told get ready for hospice.

“My next scan was clean,” Bright said. “It was 25 months from the time I was diagnosed to the surgery. Three months later I had a scan and it was clean.”

Throughout those two years Bright had been writing on a Caring Bridge blog created for her at the beginning.

People who read it encouraged her to write a book. Learning all along the way, she had great support and personal determination to survive. A book sharing her “recipe” for survival and healing is the natural outgrowth from her experience.

“It was seven years of hell,” she said. “I feel like I’m on the other side now.”

The other side has

revealed a will to share hope, healing and survival. Bright said “Thriver Soup” will teach the “ABC’s” attitudes, behavior, and choices for readers to learn there is hope. The book offers tested tips to reduce the impact of chemotherapy, get out of the hospital earlier, recover faster, manage fear, relieve stress, and avoid scams. Her book is filled with a message of healing and hope for those trying to survive cancer.

“I like being alive,” she said. “I’m just getting started. I’ve got to get this out there. I want to give people strength and hope.”

National Cancer Survivors’ Day is Saturday, June 5 Alive and well, Heidi Bright has been in radical remission since 2011.

She received the 2014 Voices of Women award for outstanding personal growth and transformation from Cincinnati’s “Whole Living Journal” magazine.

She speaks to groups regularly and is available as a guest for radio and television.

Chandler said American Legion Victor Stier Post 450 plans to concentrate its efforts on other community-service projects.

Milford Mayor Laurie Howland said it is understandable that the American Legion post is bowing out of the Memorial Day parade this year.

“The parade and the desire for the community to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice is a well-honored tradition in the city. Unfortunately, such events take a lot of support and volunteers to pull off,” Howland said.

“Too often such events and the effort behind them are not fully realized till they no longer happen. The parade is an example of the ideology

that it takes a community. moving “Hopefully, forward the community can find another way to pay tribute to the men and women who gave their lives for our country,” Howland said.

“The redevelopment of Memorial Park is one way to show that respect.”

Milford won a $69,000 federal grant to upgrade Memorial Park and plans to use some of the money to build five granite monuments honoring veterans on a landscaped plaza there.

The city also will use the community development block grant funds for improvements that include providing access for disabled people to the park and a walkway from the plaza to Riverside Park on Water Street near American Legion Victor Stier Post 450.

When it comes to raising funds for local teens, Southeast Cincinnati Young Life puts on a “Beast” of an event.

The Beast of the East Fork adventure race returns to East Fork State Park Saturday, June 4, for its second year. The 5K course takes participants on a series of natural and man-made obstacles. This year’s event promises to be bigger and better, race and Young Life Director Shawn Kuhn said.

The 5K is Kuhn’s brainchild.

He was looking for a way to raise funds to help send the Young Life teen members to summer camp.

“Young Life is what we call a parachurch ministry,” Kuhn said. “It’s similar to Fellowship of Christian Athletes, or Campus Crusade, those types of organizations.”

It’s not directly affiliated with any specific church or organization. Because it’s a Christian organization, it has no official affiliation with public schools. It’s a peer-to-peer group with meetings held in the homes of the student members.

Young Life locally serves students in Forest Hills, West Clermont, New Richmond and Batavia schools. Volunteers invest hundreds of hours annually befriending and mentoring teens. The big event each year is a one week trip to one of Young Life’s summer camp properties.

The last four years Southeast Cincinnati Young Life has allocated $60,000 to assist 350 local students cover the cost of camp.

Part of Kuhn’s job, in addition to being the Young Life leader for Anderson High School students, is to raise funds to support the camp and other Young Life pro-

“We had a really great event,” Kuhn said of the Beast’s inaugural year. “About 175 people ran last year. I was pleasantly surprised by that. With registration and corporate sponsors, we netted $6,000 toward summer camp. So this year we are hoping for more runners. Our goal is to have 250 to run this year.”

To raise that money, Kuhn said he and his fellow Young Life members are working hard to deliver an event that appeals to a variety of people, from athletes looking for a challenge to families looking for a fun outing.

For hardcore athletes who want to get their 5K time, there will be a chipped timing option.

To help make the event more family-friendly, a Little Beast obstacle course was added. For children from around ages 3 to 9, the course will be completely free and provide small versions of the big Beast’s obstacles, “We’re using it as a way to make sure that our event is really family oriented and inclusive,” Kuhn said. “Certainly I

want to attract a hardcore athlete who will run and find it challenging. We’re really trying to create a course that’s challenging.”

Last year there were participants who finished the course in

20 minutes, and others who went through as a family and maybe took up to an hour.

When the race is over, the day continues with refreshments, raffle prizes, inflatables and music.

Thanks to a grant, Clermont County has a few more prescription drug drop off boxes.

Clermont County Sheriff’s Department office, Goshen Police Department and the Village of Bethel Police Department.

The drop off boxes are one piece of a very large plan the Opiate Task Force has to address opiates, heroin and prescription drug abuse, Lydenberg said.

“We see this as one piece of reducing the supply,” she said. For many, the path to heroin addiction can be traced back to prescription drug abuse.

Some young people start with prescription drugs they find in the medicine cabinet at home or of family members.

By providing proper disposal locations for unused prescription drugs, Clermont County is hoping to break this cycle. In Clermont County, participation in efforts to provide residents with a way to properly dispose of prescription drugs started in 2010 with a Drug Take Back Day. Participation

exceeded expectations, Clermont County Mental Health and Recovery Board Executive Director Karen J. Scherra said.

“It was amazing how many came out,” she said.

The Drug Take Back event held last September resulted in nearly 200 pounds of medications being collected in Clermont County.

The first permanent drop box was in Pierce Township at the Police Department and was installed in June 2012, Scherra said. The one at Sheriff’s Office the opened next.

The drug dropoff boxes are an important part of stopping young people before they start abusing prescription drugs, Lydenberg said. They provide a convenient way to dispose of potentially addictive and deadly drugs keeping them away from children, out of the garbage, away from wildlife and out of the water supply.

Loveland High School » Loveland High School is proving that technology improves the teaching and learning experience and allows teachers and students to do more inside and outside of the classroom.

With the 2015-2016 school year, Loveland High School refined its “bring your own device” structure as it evolves into a 1:1 learning environment for next school year – with many teachers integrating technology into classroom instruction almost daily, and students having the ability to take their device outside the building to learn.

“The bottom line is that technology allows teachers and students to do things in the classroom never before possible from the teaching and learning perspective,” said David Knapp, district director of technology. “Our continued growth and ability to access technology allows teachers to focus on the individual needs of each of our students, and continue the teaching even when students leave the classroom.”

“The immediate feedback that Math XL delivers to the students has been extremely beneficial,” teacher Katie Byrkett said. “Students have tools within the program to give them immediate help and allows them the practice they need to understand the math concepts.

“Additionally, Google Sheets have allowed my students to share data and run basic statistics much quicker, which allows them more time to analyze the data. It also offers a location to store the data if we need it for the next day. Google Classroom not only allows students to collaborate amongst themselves, it also allows me to manage and participate in the collaboration – even to the point of recording verbal feedback.”

“Screencasting, or recording an audio presentation with screenshots, has allowed me to be present in the classroom, even when I am not,” teacher Jen Dell said. “I know there are lots of videos available to students on different topics, but I feel like when they hear my voice and know I am the one behind the screencasts, they are more engaged in the lesson. It also allows students to go back and revisit material at their own pace.”

At Loveland Early Childhood Center, teachers discovered treats each day in the staff work room, and enjoyed their PTA luncheon Thursday, May 12.

“This is such a tremendous way to show appreciation for what our teachers do,” Principal Kyle Bush said. “Parents donate gift cards so that each staff member gets some sort of ‘prize’ to take home, in addition

to the very nice lunch. We really appreciate the show of support for our teachers; it is very much deserved.”

“Archbishop Moeller High School Art/Photography Department since 2002 has enabled students on average to earn more than $2.5 million in scholarships annually. Graduates are accepted into top ranked art and design programs across the country,” said Jacquelyn Sommer, department chair.

Preheat oven to 350. Put butter and cocoa together and cook over low heat until butter melts.

Transfer to mixing bowl. Add sugar and eggs, beat on medium until blended. Add flour and vanilla.

Beat until blended. Stir in pecans. Spoon batter into sprayed 13x9 pan. Bake 35 minutes. Remove from oven and immediately sprinkle marshmallows over hot cake. Then immediately spread frosting over the marshmallows. It will look bumpy. Cool and then chill before slicing.

Chocolate frosting Beat on medium speed until smooth, adding a bit more milk if too stiff: 1 pound confectioners sugar, sifted or put through a sieve to remove lumps 1/2 cup milk 1/2 cup cocoa 4 tablespoons butter, softened

The slow cooker creamed corn is so popular that just about everyone wants to make it. I first heard about it from my neighbor, Erin, who made it for a family gathering. “It was so good”, she said. Then my friend, Sue Marks, a Mount Washington reader and host of “Food Thoughts,” a radio show for the blind and visually impaired, sent me the recipe. After that, it went viral and you know the rest….

2-1/2 pounds frozen yellow corn 1 cup whipping cream (you could also use half & half) 8 oz. cream cheese, room temperature, chunked up 1/2 cup shredded or grated Parmesan cheese 6 tablespoons butter, room temperature, cut up 1 tablespoon sugar or substitute Salt and pepper to taste

Spray slow cooker. Put cream, crew, cheese and butter in slow cooker and whisk until almost smooth. Stir in rest of ingredients. Cover and cook on low 4-5 hours, stirring occasionally, or until mixture is smooth and creamy and corn is crisp tender.

Recently, a resident dropped off an article for me to read. The article was from Time magazine written by Charlotte Alter titled, “Why America Needs More Female Cops.” It highlights the importance and inclusion of women in the New York Police Department.

I noted the article proudly states, “women make up 17 percent of its (NYPD) force” compared to the national average of 12 percent. Many times we think of the large, urban departments as being the innovators in law enforcement.

However, your Loveland Police Department has a long tradition of innovation, particularly in hiring practices.

Officer Betty Rajewski joined the Loveland Police

force as a full time police officer in 1974.

In perspective, only 2 percent of all police officers were women in 1970 Dennis (“Female OffiSean Rahe cers in the COMMUNITY PRESS United States,” GUEST COLUMNIST Barbara Price, National Institute of Justice.) By 1978, Officer Rajewski was assigned to the Hamilton County Homicide Task Force as an investigator. She went on to receive numerous commendations during her distinguished career for outstanding work prior to her retirement.

We have carried on this innovative tradition. Today,

more than 22 percent of our sworn officers, and 30 percent of our total staff, are women.

This is almost twice the national average quoted in the article. LPD female officers are active in bike patrol, field training, crime scene investigation, and more. The scientists hope that their studies of the interaction between protons, neutrinos, quarks, leptons and bosons will provide clues to the formation of the universe during the theorized “Big Bang” of 13.8 billion years ago. One particle, the Higgs boson, named for physicist Peter Higgs who predicted it in 1964, was allegedly detected in 2012 and is nicknamed the “God particle” for its expected ability to explain phenomena connected with the universe’s creation.

Cost of discovery of the Higgs boson exceeded $13.25 billion, according to Forbes magazine.

Despite a large scientific staff gleaned from more than

600 universities and operational costs exceeding $1 billion a year, listed accomplishments for the CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) facility at Geneva since 1954 seem to be few and far between. The tour docent explained how the Collider works, but focused mainly on how the facility was built and equipped, not on meaningful discoveries.

Joel Achenbach in National Geographic magazine (March 2008) noted a fear that “the collider will fail to find the things that physicists insist must be lurking in the deep substrate of reality. Such a big machine needs to produce big science, big answers, something that can generate a headline as well as interesting particles.”

CERN does claim that one of its scientists designed the first web page for the Internet in 1989.

Writing to his father in Georgia in April, 1945, an American missionary serving as a captain in the U.S. Army in China mused about hoped-for life as a farmer after the war: “I only want enough of science to enable fruitful husbandry of the land with simple tools, a time for leisure, and the guarding of my family’s health. KENWOOD - Grant Mays was not able to attend the Centerville High School scholar-athlete banquet Sunday.

Considering the events of Saturday, the Elks lacrosse captain was fortunate to even make it to Sunday.

The senior midfielder appeared to make a gutsy play shortly after halftime of a game at Moeller, where the Elks trailed the Crusaders, 8-2. A Crusader shot on goal hit Mays on the left side of his chest, below his heart. On instinct, he picked up the ground ball and started running down field.

Then, he collapsed. Immediately, the referee stopped play.

“We knew something was pretty serious right away,” Moeller coach Sean McGinnis said. “They stopped the game and got the medical personnel out there. Then, it took a turn for the worse as his rhythm was off.”

That’s when the experience of Moeller head trainer Craig Lindsey and head of security Rich Wallace paid off. Lindsey had passed up a local training conference to preside over two events on Moeller’s back fields – the lacrosse game and a rugby match.

He also had the foresight to have an automated external defibrillator (AED) on site with contact sports on adjacent fields.

When it appeared standard methods were not going to be enough to revive Mays, University of Cincinnati intern Ashley Higginbotham ran off the sidelines and returned with the AED. Fortunately, a Centerville parent, Mike Jones, an emergency medical technician, was in the crowd, along with

All hands were on deck, including another Beacon Orthopaedics trainer, Josh Horner, from Princeton whom Lindsey had procured with multiple events on campus.

From the second Mays went down, this team of heroes sprung into action.

Eventually, they placed the device’s pads on Grant’s chest and, after one shock, he started breathing on his own.

The Loveland girls eighth-grade basketball team finished the season 12-2 conference and 14-2 overall. They lost their first two games of the season and went on a 14-game winning streak. BLUE ASH – By most accounts, Ursuline sophomore Emily Young has a bright future in whichever sport she decides to play.

In addition to turning in impressive performances on the softball diamond, she trades in her cleats for skates and carves up the competition on the ice hockey rink. Last year, she participated in the Team USA Hockey developmental camp. This spring, she led the Lions’ youth movement.

“A lot of people ask me which one I am going to pick for college,” she said.

“Whatever opportunity I get, I’ll take. Right now, I am happy playing both and staying in shape.”

Also, she was named Girls Greater Catholic League player of the year.

In a league with the likes of Ava Lawson, Aubrey Brunst and Sydney Zeuch, that’s no easy feat.

What occurred to Mays was a condition called “commotio cordis.”

It’s something Lindsey and all trainers learn in college and is defined as a lethal disruption of heart rhythm caused by a direct blow to the chest while the heart is in between beats.

“When that happens, it sends the heart into a quivering state,” Lindsey said. “It’s not beating efficiently. It’s like the heart muscle is twitching and not firing.”

Whomever may have had doubts of the power of prayer before had to have at least come away with something to think about during those tense moments. Both teams gathered around the scene and all was quiet except for the sound of “Hail Mary” being repeated by those kneeling near Mays.

After Grant collapsed, the players witnessed his mother sprinting toward her son and sobbing.

“We held hands and did the only thing we knew to do: pray. Pray hard and loud,” Moeller junior lacrosse player Adam Kohlman said.

“That kid needed us and that Mom needed us.”

While his son was being attended to, Doug Mays walked around the field asking spectators to pray. The nearby rugby game also stopped and those players joined in the spiritual efforts while Lindsey’s crew worked fervently on resuscitating Mays.

“It was almost like the perfect storm,” McGinnis said. “It’s a great blessing to have the right people watching our game and taking a tragic situation and turning it in to a posi-

Young isn’t the only stellar sophomore on the team. Sarah Mehrle, Abby Elliott, Lanie Berlage and Rachael Schulte are just a few from that class who produced for the Lions this season.

Plenty of Lions should be in the mix for all-GGCL teams.

“We have a good sophomore class,” Ursuline coach Missy Keith said.

“We’re hoping they can continue to lead us in the direction we want to go.”

That direction includes not only competing with their fellow teams in the GGCL, but also teams such as Mason, Lebanon and Lakota East. Teams coach Keith called “the standard.”

The Comets ousted the Lions from the tournament, 14-0 back on May 16.

“Playing against a team like Mason, the girls get to see where the standard is for softball in our area,” the coach said.

Walter Brueggemann, Al Bischoff, and Dan Roche. Wetli will teach Tai Chi Chih. Brueggemann will share insights from his book Sabbath as Resistance. Bischoff will preside at liturgies. Roche will coordinate the meditation periods along with instructions on the practice. The theme will be taken from Brueggemann’s book on the Sabbath in which he states, “that the Sabbath commandment into restfulness is both urgent and difficult, for our motors are set to run at brick-making speed. The Finding Joy after Grief Retreat is scheduled for July 29-31. This retreat offers a framework of eight ways to reclaim joy following any loss of a loved one. Cincinnati Playhouse hosts auditions for â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;A Christmas Carolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Nine children will be cast to fill roles for the 2016 show The Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park will conduct auditions Saturday, June 18, and Sunday, June 19, for children interested in performing in the theatreâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 2016 production of the annual holiday favorite â&#x20AC;&#x153;A Christmas Carol.â&#x20AC;?

Nine area children will be cast to fill speaking and nonspeaking parts in the show.

Roles are available for boys and girls 8 to 13 years old. Additionally, the part of Tiny Tim requires a boy 6 to 8 years old.

Those cast in previous productions of â&#x20AC;&#x153;A Christmas Carolâ&#x20AC;? will need to submit their information again to be considered for this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s show. To be eligible, children must not turn 14 before Dec. 31.

Children should provide a resume of any experience to the Playhouse, along with a photograph (a good quality school or family photo is acceptable). The resume and photo must be submitted again even if they have been sent in the past. The resume must include exact birth date and height, as well as an email address and telephone number.

At the audition, children will be asked to share a one-minute monologue, story or poem and to demonstrate a British accent.

Interested children must be available for all rehearsals of the production, most of which are scheduled around school hours. Children must also be available for all performances,

Taking Root wins Make a Difference Day grant

Taking Root held its first annual Make a Difference Day event in October.

Volunteers and partners planted 1,100 trees in 22 communities throughout the region.

The project is one of 10 projects chosen nationwide to receive a $10,000 grant from the Make a Difference Day Foundation.

This year, the group plans to make the event even bigger. To get involved, consider attending one of our free classes at the Civic Garden Center on either June 20 or Aug. 15.

Make a difference Day is a national day of volunteerism.

Taking Root is participating by hosting a tree planting event.

Last year, 32 groups planted trees in neighborhoods including Boone County Arboretum, Newport, Covington, Walnut Hills, Great Parks of Hamilton County Spring Grove, Mount Washington, Anderson Township, Madisonville, Pleasant Ridge, Lockland, Wyoming, Glendale, Westwood, College Hill, North College Hill and Clifton.

Donna says she believes the items were stolen because the thieves are addicted to heroin and need the money. As a result, she says, â&#x20AC;&#x153;innocent people get hurt.â&#x20AC;?

Homeowners insurance can cover some of the loss, but not all. The key to recovering items from a pawn broker is being able to prove the items belong to you. Positive identification can be determined if your name is on the items or if you have recorded the serial numbers on the items and have given that to the police.

In Ohio, where some of the stolen items were allegedly pawned, the law states: â&#x20AC;&#x153;If the chief or sheriff received a report that property has been stolen and determines the identity of the true owner of the allegedly stolen property that has been purchased or pawned and is held by a licensee, and informs the licensee of the true ownerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s identity,

the licensee may restore the allegedly stolen property to the true owner directly. If a licensee fails to restore the allegedly stolen property, the true owner may recover the property from the licensee in an action at law.â&#x20AC;?

The key here is the property owners must be able to prove the items in the pawn shop belong to them. The law does allow the alleged owners to sue in court to try to convince a judge they own the items â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and permits those people to recover their attorney fees should they win the suit.

The Ohio Pawnbrokers Association states: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Less than half of 1 percent of all pawned merchandise is identified as stolen goods. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s because customers must provide positive identification and a complete description of the merchandise.

This information is then regularly transmitted to law enforcement, which dramatically decreases the likelihood that a thief would bring stolen merchandise to a pawn store.â&#x20AC;?

The bottom line is you need to carefully mark all your expensive tools and keep records of your expensive jewelry so you will be able to identify them in the event of a theft. Failing to do that may require you to pay a pawnbroker to recover any items that are stolen.

Rookwood discussion at Milford Historical Society’s Collectors Club George Hibben, senior sales associate of the Rookwood Pottery Co. will lead a discussion on Rookwood pottery at The Greater Milford Area Historical Society’s May Collectors Club meeting.

The session, free and open to the public, will start at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 25, at Promont, 906 Main St., Milford.

Hibben’s presentation will cover the history of Rookwood from 1880 up to current production. New products and archival pieces will be used for demonstration purposes. Those attending are invited to bring photos or personal Rookwood pieces with them for appraisal after the lecture.

“The GMAHS Collectors Club is a wonderful way for our community history fans to get together on a variety of interesting topics,” GMAHS Administrator Donna Amann said. “We are extremely pleased to host Mr. Hibben and excited to learn more about Rookwood, a significant player in the historical art movement in the greater Cincinnati area.”

Running in place for a long journey One man. One treadmill. 12 hours. And puppies.

Not gonna pretend – the lead paragraph is a flat-out lie.

Chris McMahon needed not one, not two, but three treadmills to keep up with his 12-hour ultra-marathon April 14.

Running in support of The League For Animal Welfare, McMahon cranked out 68.31 miles and raised $9,211.* He rotated treadmills every three hours to rest machines not used to that kind of stress, but McMahon himself only took a handful of five-minute breaks to use the restroom or change shirts.

“I’ve seen a lot of different kinds of fundraisers, but nothing like this” League Executive Director Marilyn Goodrich said. “Chris is unbelievable.

We’re so grateful.

“There are going to be a lot of selfies taken with these puppies.”And maybe some adoptions.

TQL employees have given permanent homes to nearly a dozen rescue animals from the League since last August.

A patio party/running expo capped the event with representatives from events TQL will sponsor like the Flying Pig Marathon and Forest Hills 5K, as well as Physi, Tri-State Running Co. and Hoist. And did we mention the puppies?

McMahon burned about 110 calories per mile. He had all kinds of fuel at his disposal, including several 300-calorie beverages, bananas, pretzels and a jar of pickles.

Pickles?

“A lot of endurance fuel is sweetened and it gets old pretty fast,” he said. “I can’t be eating berry flavor all day. The pickles cut right through that sweetness.”

McMahon hopped on the first treadmill at 5:30 a.m. without so much as a calf stretch and

What did he think about?

“Anything other than how much longer I had to go,” he said.

That was another reason for multiple treadmills. Fellow employees hopped on during the day to keep him company.

“Distance wise this is tough, but mentally, doing it all on a treadmill is really hard,” McMahon said.

“A lot of monotony.”

He divided the day into 11minute increments of running followed by four minutes of walking.

But even his walking pace was 3.5 miles per hour.

McMahon’s run didn’t just benefit the League. Employees who donated got to guess on his mileage totals at different intervals and win gift cards.

By the way, he’s not taking Friday off. You’re argument is invalid.
