Get ready to party like it’s 1994 – the 1990s’ most epic year. BLDG, 30 West Pike St., in Covington is set to host “Wax Nostalgic: 1994,” an art exhibit inspired by pop art and culture. Guest curated by Chris Breeden, general manager of Arnold’s Bar & Grill, the show opens 7-11 p.m. Aug. 17 and will be on view 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and by appointment Monday through Friday through Sept. 14. The exhibit features more than 50 local, regional and national artists whose works will come together to celebrate the most influential year that decade. Pieces include 2D and 3D artworks, photography, mixed media and fiber work all for sale. “The works have been inspired by pop art, culture, media, music, tech and anything else that make one wax nostalgic for the glory of ‘94,” Breeden said. Columbia Tusculum artist Pam Kravetz, 57, said she “couldn’t say no” when asked to participate. “90’s pop culture, music, movies were all so off the hook, kitschy and cool,” she said. “This the total trifecta of coolness in an art show,” Kravetz said. “I created a drawing called The Greatest Show on Earth. My art is narrative and often self-portrait. Although this piece is not a literal self-portrait, it talks about how I often get things wrong.” When creating her piece Kravetz said she

thought about how Nick Cave the musician was Nick Cave the artist. She thought The Bad Seeds were the Black Seeds. “Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds had a 1994 album called ‘Let Love In’ and it parallels my personal growth,” she said. “This piece is what a what if Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds wore Nick Cave Soundsuits? That would be The Greatest Show on Earth.” Kravetz said she is honored to have her art in the exhibit. She can’t wait for the opening reception. “Chris (Breeden) is creating a ‘happening’ for the opening,” she said. “This isn’t going to be a wine and cheese kinda thing. He is creating an almost Andy Warhol event.” The artist reception on Aug. 17 includes a dance party spun by DJ Brock McKinley. Attendees are encouraged to wear their best ‘90sinspired streetwear, fanny packs and anything that celebrates their inner “Saved by the Bell.” Breeden came up with the idea for “Wax Nostalgic: 1994” after realizing how much he has been impacted by the art and events that occurred in 1994. “From the wicked to the whack, ‘94 was a year that defined a decade,” he said. “It spawned some of the most compelling and memorable moments of an entire era. A lot of things I love came out in 1994. “It was a time of hella highs and bogus lows and the best way to deal was to party on through. Some remember it fondly, others would rather forget – but all are invited to celebrate what turned out to be one helluva year.”
St. Elizabeth breaks ground on cancer center Melissa Reinert Cincinnati Enquirer | USA TODAY NETWORK
EDGEWOOD – St. Elizabeth Healthcare broke ground Thursday on a $130 million hospital that will dedicate nearly a quarter-million square feet to fighting cancer. The Northern Kentucky facility is the second new cancer hospital under construction in the region. TriHealth also is building a special facility to treat cancer. The St. Elizabeth cancer hospital, to be five stories tall, is scheduled to open in 2020. Hospital officials said the new hospital will expand efforts for prevention, genetic screening, precision medicine, clinical research and treatment options. St. Elizabeth also has partnered with the University of Kentucky's Markey Cancer Center to improve cancer care in Northern Kentucky. "The center is a key component in fulfilling our ongoing vision to lead Northern Kentucky to become one of the healthiest communities in America," said Garren Colvin, president and chief executive officer of St. Elizabeth. Kentucky has the highest rates for the incidence of and death from cancer in the nation. The three key Northern Kentucky counties – Boone, Campbell and Kenton – have better cancer rates than the rest of the commonwealth. But their numbers are worse than Southwest Ohio's. St. Elizabeth treats about 10,000 cancer patients yearly, said hospital spokesman Guy Karrick. The facility is also expected to accommodate about 650 positions. St. Elizabeth is in the middle of a capital campaign to raise money for the construction, and Karrick said $35 million has been committed for the rest from the hospital's capital budget.
