PRIMARY ELECTIONS
May 22 primary has storylines to watch
Five-week program gives community an inside look A white van without a license plate sped down I-275 West two lanes over from me. The rear left wheel bounced in an odd way, the axle appeared to be near its breaking point. Without any signal or warning, the vehicle crossed two lanes and cut off a TANK bus in front of me. I did something I wouldn’t have done a few weeks ago - I called Kenton County Dispatch and reported the vehicle. I knew police would follow up and locate the unsafe vehicle before an accident occurred. Most people would dismiss or avoid the vehicle. That’s what I would have done before my experiences in the Lakeside Park/Crestview Hills Citizens Police Academy. A five-week program offered to city residents, the course detailed some of the duties and responsibilities we all take for granted from our local police force. Tuesday, May 22, is primary day in Kentucky. Some county government races only have Republican candidates seeking election. So, the Nov. 6 general election may not be a factor for some races. Here are some key battles to watch as Election Day approaches.

Flying Axes ready to hit Covington bar scene This will be Louisville-based Flying Axes' second location. Patrons throw axes inside a fenced-in area. The Louisville location advertises special nights on Facebook including Axe Your Ex with a blade slicing through a photo of a man in a suit. Team-building exercises are a specialty of Flying Axes, said Katie Meyer, president of nonprofit Renaissance Covington. Flying Axes will be a unique attraction, Meyer said. "I think people will take the extra time to have an experience like that," she said. The 1898 firehouse Flying Axes is moving into was Covington's main fire station until 1975. Ax-throwing bars have become a thing spreading across the U.S. The Cincinnati area's first Flying Axes sports bar will open in June inside a historic Covington firehouse at 100 W. Sixth St. Ax throwing bars have opened in cities across the U.S. including New York City and Louisville. Flying Axes will open where Tickets Sports Cafe operated for more than 20 years. The bar is across the street from the Covington landmark Mother of God Roman Catholic Church. Braxton Brewery and bars and restaurants in MainStrasse Village are within walking distance.

Boone County Commonwealth's Attorney Linda Tally Smith has refused to resign. Republican attorney Louis Kelly of Union is campaigning against Tally Smith based upon her actions related to a high-profile murder case. Information from a thumb drive threw the case's 2014 murder conviction into question. The information revealed an affair developed between Tally Smith and lead detective Bruce McVay after the David Dooley trial.

restaurant in 1976. Noll sold the firehouse in 1985 when it became Tickets Sports Cafe. In 2013, Tickets closed. The sports bar was reopened the same year by longtime Tickets employee Jim Brautigan as the Firehouse on West Sixth. "We're excited to see that building come back to life," Meyer said. "It's been an icon in the neighborhood for a long time."

Boone County's four-person incumbent leadership team are each being challenged by political newcomers running campaigns as political outsiders. Judge-executive Gary Moore, in his 19th year in the office, is challenged by Union resident Chris Reinersman. The campaign has gotten personal. Incumbent District 1 Commissioner Cathy Hudson Flaig, of Burlington, is challenged by Justin Bailey, of Hebron. Incumbent District 2 Commissioner Charles Kenner is challenged by fellow Union resident Elizabeth O. Smith. District 3 Commissioner Charlie Walton, of Florence, is challenged by Florence resident Jesse Brewer.
