College Hill housing market re-energized Bowdeya Tweh btweh@enquirer.com

Ten years ago, College Hill residents began discussing how renovating housing in the neighborhood could help house victims displaced by Hurricane Katrina. Residents and other groups weren’t able to get people from places such as New Orleans in the homes. However, the effort has evolved into a decade-long partnership featuring residents, South Cumminsville nonprofit Working In Neighborhoods and other groups to help build up College Hill’s housing market. Tuesday marked the anniversary of launching the effort, but it also served as the backdrop for a ceremonial groundbreaking for the construction of a new home at 1323 Cedar Ave. The development comes at a time when the neighborhood is seeing a big boost in residential and commercial development interest. » The Saint Francis Group has a preferred development agreement with the

city to help guide the future of 71⁄2 acres of land at Hamilton Avenue and North Bend Road. The land is envisioned to feature a mixed-use development with retail, residential and office uses. » The city is working with T.J. Ackermann and Ralph Meierjohan to prepare a new 36-home subdivision in neighborhood for the 2016 Citirama home show. College Hill also gained 24 new homes following the 2014 Citirama show. » The College Hill Community Urban Redevelopment Corp. obtained a $100,000 grant to renovate the former National City Bank building at 5932 Hamilton Ave. to house a new restaurant. The Cedar home will be the 11th that Working in Neighborhoods and its partners have helped develop in College Hill. Since 2006, the organization helped renovate and sell 10 homes to first-time buyers. About $1.8 million has been invested in the properties prior to being sold. Sales of the 10 homes brought in nearly $928,000, according to Working In

Neighborhoods. Five more properties – 1306 Groesbeck Road, 5827 Salvia Ave., 1208 Cedar Ave., 1310 Cedar Ave., and 1317 Cedar Ave. – are targeted for redevelopment. The properties feature between two and four bedrooms and will feature a mix of rehab and new construction. Properties must be maintained as owner-occupied residential housing. “Our goal is to increase wealth for College Hill families by raising home values while keeping home prices within reach for current residents,” said Sister Barbara Busch, executive director of Working In Neighborhoods. First-time buyers can obtain housing counseling through Working In Neighborhoods and if they qualify, can obtain a conventional bank loan to buy the home, Busch said. Next month, the foundation will be dug for the three-bedroom, 21⁄2-bathroom energy-efficient home on 1323 Cedar. Construction on the initiative’s first

No reason to have a bad feeling about this: “Star Wars,” the real deal, for hours. For free. Put on your cinnamon bun coiffure, strap on a blaster or a light saber and bring your wookie and your “Star Wars” vibe to Mount Healthy’s “Star Wars” trilogy movie night Saturday, Oct. 24, in Mount Healthy City Park. Mount Healthy is screening the classic trio of movies that started long, long ago in a galaxy far, far way. “A New Hope,” which starts Luke Skywalker on his journey to learn the ways of the Force; “The Empire Strikes Back,” which finds Darth Vader leading the hunt for Skywalker, and “Return of the Jedi,” in which Skywalker leads a mission to rescue Han Solo from the clutches of Jabba the Hutt, and faces Vader one last time. Administrative assistant Monica Lubiani said the idea built from anticipation around the hotly-anticipated “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” set to hit theaters in December. “We thought it would be fun, and it’s a way to stretch the summer entertainment in the park into the fall.” The movies start at 5 p.m. Saturday Oct. 24 and are expected to run until midnight. Bring lawn chairs and blankets and your appetite, as food will be available from Renegade Street Eats, the food truck that was at the July 3 park event. Drinks and beer are also
