North College Hill native opening new restaurant By Heidi Fallon hfallon@communitypress.com
Chris Hoeweler is coming home and bringing a new business with him. Hoeweler grew up in North College Hill and is about to open his VanZandt restaurant at 1810 W. Galbraith Road. The 1988 North College Hill High School graduate is in the process of gutting the former Budna Grill and adjacent barber shop to make way for his eatery. “I saw the for sale sign on the Budna one day and it just clicked,” Hoeweler said. “My parents still live here and I wanted to come back and do something for the community that raised me.” With experience at several restaurants, including Trios where he met his wife, Sherry, Hoeweler is hoping to have VanZandt open for business by Labor Day. “It’ll be a challenge, but the restaurant business always is,” he said. He plans a casual dining experience with lunch and dinners. He also plans on taking advantage of the liquor license that came with the Budna property. “I want to have something for an after 9 p.m. crowd, maybe featuring local musicians with mellow type of music,” he said.

Chris Hoeweler takes a break from converting two businesses into his VanZandt restaurant on West Galbraith Road in North College Hill. The remodeling has taken the walls of both buildings down to the beams and plaster. The former barber shop will be converted into a patio area for outdoor dining. Built in 1928, the former Budna building was a car dealer-
ship before it was a bar, Hoeweler said. “I’ve found old cigarette packs, magazines, match boxes and all sorts of stuff behind the drywall,” he said. “While the economy may not be real great right now, it really
helped me in buying the two properties,” he said. “I have a long-range business plan and all that is going on right now with the new Walgreens and the school construction will be an added boost for me and the city.”

Springfield Township department heads are trying a new approach to problem solving. The Performance STAT program brings the department leaders together every two weeks for a brainstorming session. Kimberlee Flamm, projects, events and communications coordinator, said the group tackles immediate and long-term goals. “For instance, my concern might be attracting more residents to use our e-news link on the Web,” she said. “The other department heads might suggest putting fliers in the parks or posting information in businesses,” she said. “It’s just a different way of thinking.” As part of the Performance

STAT approach, Flamm said residents will be surveyed for additional input. “We want to get in touch with residents to better deter- Flamm mine what they want and what they may be concerned about,” she said. She will launch the survey project at the end of the summer and be used in the township’s redevelopment plan. “It will help us determine demographics and the unique problems and potential of the diverse communities within the township. “None of our neighborhoods are alike and we need to find ways to address their specific concerns,” Flamm said.
