BECAUSE COMMUNITY MATTERS

Newtown gets paid for land Easement granted for fiber optic box By Rob Dowdy rdowdy@communitypress.com

NEWTOWN — It took some negotiating, but Newtown will receive compensation for granting Cincinnati Bell an easement in one of its parks. Village Council recently voted to approve the easement agreement in the village’s Mini Park, near the intersection of state Route 32 and Church Street. Cincinnati Bell originally requested to be given the easement at no cost, but Councilman Chuck Short, who led negotiations for the village, said the company will now pay $1,000 for the easement.

State denies liquor permit

Mt. Washington had expressed concerns By Forrest Sellers fsellers@communitypress.com

MT. WASHINGTON — A recent denial of a liquor permit to an area business will likely be supported by the Mt. Washington Community Council. The Ohio Division of Liquor Control objected to renewal of a liquor permit for the Sutton Pony Keg at 1911 Sutton Ave. following an August hearing. According to a letter submitted by the Ohio Division of Liquor Control, “The permit holder ... has operated the business and liquor permit business in a manner that demonstrates a disregard for the laws, regulations or local ordinances of this state.” The letter was sent to Nazih Shteiwi, president of Mon Amour Inc., which operates the establishment. According to the letter, Cin-

cinnati City Council objected to renewal of the permit. The Mt. Washington Community Council has also expressed concerns about the establishment. In April 2011, brothers Brandon Shteiwi and Ibrahim Shteiwi, who are employees of Mon Amour Inc., were convicted of several charges by a federal court. Brandon Shteiwi was convicted of food stamp fraud, selling firearms without a license and selling a firearm to an ineligible recipient, said Fred Alverson, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Southern Ohio. An “ineligible recipient” would be considered a felon. Brandon Shteiwi was sentenced to 51 months. Alverson said Ibrahim Shteiwi was convicted on one of the charges, selling a firearm to an ineligible recipient. He was sentenced to one day in jail followed by three years of supervised release. “We simply took the recom-

Salem Road project granted green light Township to buy easements for plan By Lisa Wakeland lwakeland@communitypress.com

mendation of the police and the wishes of the community into consideration and determined it was probably better off that that business was no longer permitted to serve alcohol,” said Jake Williams, board president of the Mt. Washington Community Council. Williams said council members have not yet discussed the ruling by the Ohio Division of Liquor Control but said he expects they would be satisfied by the ruling. Williams said neighbors have complained about nuisance-related activities at the Sutton Pony Keg. “That combined with the legal action was enough for the Community Council,” he said. The owner of the Sutton Pony Keg could not be reached for comment. Matt Mullins, a spokesman for the Ohio Division of Liquor Control, said Sutton Pony Keg could appeal the decision through the Ohio Liquor Control Commission.

Anderson Township is pushing ahead with planned improvements to Salem Road even though some elements need tweaking. Township trustees recently authorized staff to proceed with securing easements and preparing bid documents for the project, which includes resurfacing, curb repair and replacement, restriping and new sidewalks between Beechmont Avenue and Sutton Road. New turn lanes are also

planned for Salem Road’s intersection with Beacon Road and Alnetta Drive, as well as at Beech Acres Park. Planning and Zoning Director Paul Drury said they’re still working out striping issues with the Hamilton County Engineer’s Office – Salem Road is owned by the county – and have narrowed the striping plan to two options. The first includes some parking on one side of the street with two travel lanes. Where that parking is located depends on sight lines for drivers, proximity to intersections and other factors, Drury said. The second option would be See SALEM, Page A2

He said the figure was “as high as they would go,” adding that the company typically doesn’t pay for similar easements in other communities. Short The company is received a 10-foot-by-10-foot easement near the back of the park to install a cabinet as part of the company’s plan to run fiber optic wiring through the village. Cincinnati Bell will landscape the area. “It’s pretty much out-of-sight, out-of-mind,” said maintenance supervisor Ron Dickerson. Short said the move could help Cincinnati Bell add 576 local customers “immediately.”
