Library seeks photos of ’37 flood
Boone County Public Library is seeking accounts of the 1937 flood from Boone residents. The flood’s 75th anniversary is January 2012. Those with first-person memories or anecdotes shared by relatives are asked to contact Bridget Striker, local history coordinator, at 859342-2665, ext. 8131. The library seeks photographs of the flooding as well. “Many people in the county may have inherited photographs from the flood,” said Thomas Schiffer of Gunpowder Road, who’s compiling local history items for the flood anniversary. Those with flood photographs may bring them to the main library branch in Burlington where the staff will digitize photos and promptly return them to the owner. Schiffer said those with photographs may also call him at 859-371-7778 to make other arrangements.

Expansion to create 138 jobs By Mark Hansel
mhansel@nky.com
FLORENCE - Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear joined community leaders and company officials here Oct. 18 to announce a major expansion project at a company that manufactures and markets automobile parts and components. Linamar Corp. plans to invest $40.8 million in equipment that will bring 138 new jobs to the facility on Industrial Road in Florence. “The fact that Linamar has chosen to invest more than $40 million and double the size of its workforce in Northern Kentucky speaks volumes to the region’s and the state’s outstanding business climate,” Beshear said. “The commonwealth is pleased to partner with community leaders and Linamar to make this growth possible.” Linamar produces engine components for Ford and Chrysler and will add the new equipment to its existing 360,000-square-foot facility. The equipment is expected to be installed immediately, with production scheduled to begin by January. Beshear credited the region for being able to supply the type of skilled employees that local companies need and singled out two recent Linamar hires for recognition. Vickie Vinson was laid off from her previous job with a delivery company after 12 years and Bonnie Pryor began looking for work after her husband died in 2009. “This company has been my saving grace,” Pryor said. “It was a big change, but I love it here.” Florence Mayor Diane Whalen said it is no accident that the region continues to experience growth, even in difficult economic times. “Once again, Florence and Northern Kentucky prove that when a positive business climate is present, that includes a skilled workforce and a supportive community, private investment and job creation will follow,” Whalen said. Last month, Beshear also attended a ribbon cutting ceremony at ZF Steering for the $95.8 million expansion of its new facility in Florence. The Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority preliminarily approved Eagle Manufacturing, a division of Linamar, for tax incentives up to $4.5 million through the Kentucky Business Investment program.

Woods makes run for council By Justin B. Duke jbduke@nky.com
FLORENCE - William Woods is looking to bring unity back to Florence City Council. Woods is one of five candidates on the Nov. 8 ballot to fill the vacancy on Florence City Council left by the death of Ted Bushelman in March. He’d planned to make his council run next fall during the regular election, but instead, Woods, 23, opted to go for the vacancy this year. “I’m tired of seeing people my age complaining about what’s going on in the city,” Woods said. Woods sees being on council as going a step beyond just talking
about issues in the city and helping to do something about them, he said. Currently Woods works in security at a retirement home Woods in Fort Wright and has lived in Florence since 1993. He hopes to eliminate some of the division on council. “Council has taken a swing to where there are two sides,” Woods said. If elected, Woods hopes to restore a sense of unity to city leadership. “We don’t need to have conflict
on council,” Woods said. The current council’s handling of fireworks sellers has Woods worried about how the city deals with businesses, he said. “We don’t need council declaring businesses the enemy – that’s ridiculous,” he said. If Woods is elected Nov. 8, he would take office upon certification of the election results and serve for the remainder of Bushelman’s term, set to end Dec. 31, 2012.
Collision kills driver, injures passenger On Sunday, Oct. 23, at approximately 4 p.m. a two-vehicle traffic collision at the intersection of U.S. 42 and Ky. 338 (Beaver Road) claimed the life of one of the drivers and sent another occupant to the hospital with reportedly life-threatening injuries, according to the Boone County Sheriff’s Department. Brandon Chamberlain, 22, of Union was southbound on Beaver Road at the intersection of U.S. 42
driving a Honda hatchback. Cory Jones, 22 of Florence was westbound on U.S. 42 driving a rollback wrecker owned by Enhanced Auto approaching the intersection. Chamberlain started out into the intersection in front of Jones, the sheriff’s office said. Jones braked and swerved left in an effort to avoid the collision but struck the Honda directly in the side. Both vehicles continued diago-
nally across U.S. 42 and over an embankment. Chamberlain was transported to St. Elizabeth Florence where he was pronounced dead. His passenger, Tyler Matney, 7, of Florence was flown to Children’s Hospital in Cincinnati by Air Care with life-threatening injuries. Jones was taken to St. Elizabeth Florence with reported minor neck injuries. All three were believed to wearing seat belts.
