FLORENCE — If you’re looking for a new favorite beer, Turfway Park wants to give you plenty of choices. Turfway Park is hosting its firstever Craft Beer Festival from noon to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15. “We’re really excited about this,” said Jack Gordon, director of marketing and sales for Turfway Park. Gordon has been working with beer

distributors for a long time to get a craft beer event at Turfway, he said. “I had wanted to do something like this years ago,” Gordon said. As the popularity of microbreweries and craft beers soared, the time was finally right to have the festival, he said. Having the festival at Turfway Park, during the fall racing season, allows for a unique intersection of craft beers and live horse racing that could make new fans for both, Gordon said. Gordon is planning to have a wide varieties of beers that appeal to anyone’s taste. There will be 50 different beers from breweries like Blue Moon,

In addition to the craft beers, grills will be cooking up brats and other food. The day also includes a designated driver ticket for $7.50 that includes soft drinks and water all day. “That’s one of the things we want to be very cognizant of,” Gordon said. “This is an event where you can come and let your hair down, but we want to be responsible.”

Community Recorder FLORENCE — Turfway Park honored a hero during racing on Sept. 8 when the track welcomed Boone County Sheriff’s deputy Greg Tanner to the winner’s circle. On June 27, Tanner saved the life of Mike Mallory when he pulled the paralyzed man from a burning mobile home in Richwood Trailer Park in Walton. FLORENCE — Construction on the racing themed sports bar is nearing the checkered flag. Quaker Steak and Lube will open its first Northern Kentucky location Oct. 3. In the works for 3.5 years, the restaurant will complete the concept of putting the racing themed restaurant next to Thoroughbred Harley-Davidson on Action Boulevard in Florence. The restaurant is in the final stages of its construction, which includes adding in booths, getting final inspections and hanging race cars from the ceiling. “Every day is a new day as far as walking in here goes,” said general manager Bob Jacoby. With race memorabilia all over the restaurant, it’s no surprise the restaurant will be a place to watch sports. The new building features three bars and 48 TVs. Jacoby, a Lexington native, has an idea of what games he’d like to see on those screens. “I want to see this turn into ‘Northern UK Central’ during basketball season,” he said. Across the country, the restaurant holds its weekly bike nights as a special tradition, but having a Harley-Davidson shop next door will only up the ante, Jacoby said. The two stores are coordinating their bike nights for Thursday nights, and Jaco-

a.m. that the mobile home was on fire and Mallory, who was paralyzed 16 years ago from complications during brain surgery, was trapped in the bedroom. Tanner was about a mile away and responded immediately. “When I pulled up I could see smoke coming from what I figured was the bedroom window,” said Tanner. “I kicked See TURFWAY, Page A2
