AAA, Bob Sumerel open combo store

Florence first in area with new concept By Justin B. Duke jbduke@nky.com

FLORENCE — There’s usually limited options to pass the time while you’re waiting on car repairs. You can play with your phone or read outdated maga-

zines. AAA is giving a whole new line of options. In 2009, AAA acquired Bob Sumerel Tire Co. Using that acquisition, they’re opening a combination of a mechanic and AAA office in Florence. The new store is located at 8711 U.S. 42, and expands on what the two companies could do separately, said AAA president Tom

Wiedermann. “Now we can help our members with a repair solution, instead of just towing,” Wiedermann said. Customers who stop in for maintenance or repairs can talk with a AAA agent getting some travel advice, he said. “They have an opportunity to See AAA, Page A2

Potter honored for service

Woman named Citizen of the Year By Justin B. Duke jbduke@nky.com

FLORENCE — A lifetime of service is forever memorialized. Stephanie Potter was awarded the Florence Rotary Club’s 2012 Citizen of the Year. Potter founded the charity Rob’s Kids that helps kids with mental illnesses. Potter’s life of service dates back to when she was a student at Ockerman Middle School and

volunteered as a candy striper. Since then, Potter’s been a Girl Scout leader, part of the Women’s Breakfast Network and other organizations. “Whatever group she’s involved with, she just adds so much,” said Potter’s close friend Chris Sturgill. Potter founded Rob’s Kids because her granddaughter, Samantha Potter, always wanted to help kids with mental illnesses. “She’s made my dream come true,” Samantha said. While many see Potter from a distance, having her as a grandmother has been an inspiration,

Samantha said. “There isn’t anything she can’t really do,” she said. As part of winning the award, Potter was named a Kentucky Colonel, given a Kentucky Senate Citation, made a lifelong honorary member of the Florence Rotary Club and a $1,000 donation to Rob’s Kids was made in her name. “I’m very overwhelmed by this honor,” Potter said. Service isn’t just an extension of who Potter is, she said. “I do what I do because that’s

FLORENCE — The Breeders’ Cup announced Monday that Robert N. Elliston, President and CEO of Turfway Park since 1999, has been named COO of Breeders’ Cup Ltd. Elliston, 48, of Florence, had spent the past 13 years at the helm of Turfway Park in Northern Kentucky, leading the company through a period of innovation. Turfway was the first track in North America to install a synthetic racing surface resulting in a dramatic decrease in race-related catastrophic injuries. Under Elliston’s leadership, Turfway has continually been ranked among the top 10 North American tracks by Horseplayers Association of North America. “We are proud to have selected one of the most talented, highly-regarded and respected individuals in the Thoroughbred racing business as our chief operating officer,” said Breeders’ Cup President and CEO Craig Fravel. “Bob’s value as a leader and expertise in coordinating operations with our board, management and with host tracks for the Breeders’ Cup World Championships will be a terrific asset to our company.” “It is very difficult to place into words the excitement that I feel to be selected to join such a world class organization as the

Elliston currently serves as executive chair of the National Thoroughbred Racing AssociaElliston tion Board of Directors and is treasurer of the Kentucky Equine Education Project (KEEP) Board. He also serves on the Thoroughbred Racing Association Board and the University of Louisville Equine Program Advisory Board. In 2002, Elliston was named Man of the Year by the Kentucky Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association, and in 2003 he received the Kentucky Harness Horsemen's Presidential Award for distinguished service to the horse industry. In 2010, Elliston was named to the Leadership Hall of Fame for his contributions to the Northern Kentucky community. Before coming to Turfway Park, Elliston was vice president of commercial lending for US Bank, N.A., for seven years. He continues a relationship See ELLISTON, Page A2
