The closure of the Remke Markets store in Columbia Township will result in the loss of about 54 jobs. Columbia Township Administrator Michael Lemon said the tax revenue loss to the township will be minor. “We hope to see the location reopen within a short time and regain the lost jobs,” Lemon said. Remke Markets announced earlier this month that it was closing its store at 3240 Highland Ave. by the end of June. “We don’t make these decisions lightly. Our priority is to continue to serve our custom-

ers and our associates while remaining competitive,” Remke Markets told customers in an email.
Closing the Columbia Township store will leave Remke Markets with 10 stores in Southwest Ohio and Northern Kentucky. Lemon said Columbia Township has learned that Remke Markets’ Highland Avenue site was auctioned off several months ago. “But we have not been able to get information on potential replacements,” Lemon said. “We have heard that a number of companies are interested, but no specifics. “In the meantime, we look forward to the opening of the CBT Co. headquarters around the corner which will add over See REMKE, Page 2A
FOR PROTECTING RESIDENTIAL CHARACTER

HYDE PARK – Several Hyde Park residents were honored for their efforts to protect the residential character of their neighborhood. Scott Hassell and Sheila Siermann were selected as the 2016 Hyde Park Persons of the Year by the Hyde Park Neighborhood Council. “It was nice to get the recognition for working to protect the qualities that make Hyde Park such a desirable place to live,” Hassell said. Both Hassell and Siermann spearheaded an initiative to prevent a zone change on their street, Zumstein Avenue. Legal firm Stagnaro, Saba and Patterson has requested a zone change that would allow for limited office use in a building that is zoned for residential use. The city granted a “notwithstanding designation” which allows for office use of that building in a residential area. However, if the building is sold, approval would once again have to be given by the
city for any type of zone change. Hassell and Siermann spent more than a year attending various hearings. They also raised awareness of the situation by going door to door, speaking at Hyde Park Neighborhood Council meetings and initiating a letter writing campaign. Their goal was to prevent commercial encroachment, they said. “The Hyde Park Neighborhood Council provided great support and knowledge,” Siermann said. “We (also) had a lot of help from neighbors, friends and the community. “Without their support it would have been harder.” Siermann has received previous recognitions and awards from the Cincinnati Police Department for her involvement with Citizens on Patrol. Hassell is very active in numerous organizations throughout the Tristate. He said this is one of the first awards he has received for See HONORS, Page 2A
