Elder a win short of state title The Elder Panthers got past their Greater Catholic League rival Friday, June 4, but couldn’t get past Lakewood St. Edwards in the state Division I state baseball final Sunday, June 6. The Panthers dropped the final game 8-3 to St. Edwards, which won its second state title in three years. And they saw a pitcher who was expected to be drafted in the first round of the Major League Baseball draft. Stetson Allie stuck out 16 Panthers in six innings Sunday to lead St. Edwards to the victory. His third pitch of the game registered 101 mph on a radar gun. “We saw that,” senior shortstop Selby Chidemo said. “We were pretty much in awe, but we still thought we could get to him.” Elder coach Mark Thompson was impressed. “That’s the most dominating performance I’ve seen since I started coaching high school ball,” said Thompson, who has coached the Panthers for 21 years. “We were hoping to get his pitch count up and

That’s why he’s going to be a multi-millionaire (someday).” The Eagles opened a 8-0 lead before the Panthers could break through. Elder scored all of their runs in the sixth inning, and loaded the bases in the seventh – after Allie was replaced by Cody Cooper. But Jacob Lindsey ground into a double play to end the game. The Panthers, ranked No. 2 in the state polls, got to the final game by beating Moeller 1-0 Friday. That game ended when Moeller’s Max Belza left second early on a flyout in the seventh inning for an inningending double play. Elder starting pitcher Brian Korte
held Moeller in check. “You never know what you’re going to get against Moe,” Korte said. “I worked out of some jams and got lucky they didn’t score. Against that team, they’re so wellcoached, you’ve just got to throw strikes and be at your best.” Senior center fielder Timmy O’Conner drove in the game’s only run with a sixth-inning single and Korte and Matt Pate teamed up to hand Moeller (29-2), ranked No. 3 in the nation ESPN RISE FAB rankings, its only shutout of the season, snapping the Crusaders’ winning streak at 27 in the third meeting of the season between the two Greater Catholic League rivals.
The first section of work on Delhi Road is expected to start with the demolition of the McDonald’s restaurant. Restaurant manager Donna Quinn said McDonald’s will close at 11 p.m. Saturday, June 12. “It will be a new-style restaurant design and be really nice for the residents of Delhi,” Quinn said. It’s expected to take 120 days for the construction to be complete, Schroeder Quinn said. While the fast-food restaurant is under construction, crews are expected to get started widening the entrance to Delhi Township Park. Township Administrator Gary Schroeder said the plan is to maintain one lane for access into the park from the pike. Along with the road work, plans call for a water feature to highlight the new park entrance, courtesy of the Delhi Business Association. A new traffic light also will be installed. Schroeder said bids have gone out for this segment of the pike project. The remaining portions of the project include an additional turn lane from Anderson Ferry Road to Delhi Road and eliminating some curb cut access points. The $1.7-million project is costing the township $220,000 for engineering fees and its 10 percent required match. McDonald’s is allocating $45,000 toward the project. Hamilton County is spending $75,000 and the rest of the project will be funded by a state road grant.
