Mr. Roden’s opus

Robert Roden was passionate about teaching music. The former Simon Kenton band director taught music at the high school from 1946 to 1976. He built the school’s music program from the ground up, according to his former students, who recently received support from the site-based decision making council to name the band room in his honor. Poll workers needed in Kenton County By Melissa Stewart mjstewart@nky.com

It’s that time of the year again – political signs are posted in yards and poll workers are being gathered. The Democratic and Republican representatives for the Kenton County Board of Elections are accepting applications for poll workers for the general election Tuesday, Nov. 8. “It’s here,” said Democratic Commissioner Marty Huelsmann, who’s been organizing poll workers for three years. “If you’re off work that day it’s a nice thing to do – a service to your country and state, and you can earn a couple of dollars.”

A poll worker must be 18 years of age or older, reside in Kenton County and be a registered voter in Kenton County on Election Day. Workers must be available to report to their assigned polling place by 5:15 a.m. Polls are open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Poll workers are also required to take a two-hour training session prior to the election. There are multiple training sessions during the week Monday, Oct. 17, through Thursday, Oct. 20. Times are listed on the county clerk’s website at www.kentoncounty.org. Workers receive $20 for training and $125 for working the day of the election. If interested, contact the appro-

priate board member as soon as possible. They are: Democratic Commissioner Marty Huelsmann at mhuelsmann@fuse.net and Republican Commissioner Eileen Wendt-Moser at eileen.moser@kentoncounty.org. There is no deadline to apply. Once approved applicants’ names will be put on a waiting list. “We’ve called people in two or three days before, even the day of,” said Huelsmann due to illness or other events that may prevent

the previous scheduled person from working. Republican Commissioner Eileen Wendt-Moser, who’s organized poll workers for eight years, said she’s been greatly encouraged by all those who’ve been interested this year. She’s already received 50 responses, usually there’s about 20 people on the waiting list. “We have men and women fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq to preserve our right to have our day at the polls,” she said. “It’s a long 13-hour day, but when you think of the time they put in every day to me (13 hours) isn’t much of a sacrifice.” For more about your community, visit www.nky.com/kentoncounty

I-275 in N. Ky. dubbed Ronald Reagan Highway

State Rep. Adam Koenig, RErlanger, announced Sept. 28 that signs will be erected on Interstate 275 in Kentucky, officially designating this stretch of road as “Ronald Reagan Highway” in tribute of the nation’s 40th president, Ronald Wilson Reagan. Koenig sponsored an amendment to House Joint Resolution 19 Koenig that honors the life and accomplishments of President Reagan by designating

Interstate 275, for its entire length inside the boundaries of the commonwealth, as the “Ronald Reagan Highway.” This amendment also directed placement of signs denoting this designation. “History paints the 1980s as a time of positive social, economic and political change, which can be largely credited to President Reagan,” said Koenig. “While in office, he pursued policies that reflected his personal belief in individual freedom, brought about changes to the

U.S. economy and the military, and contributed to the end of the both the Cold War and the fall of the Berlin Wall. He greatly impacted the lives of many, both domestically and abroad, and I was proud to sponsor legislation paying tribute to one of America’s greatest presidents.” According to Koenig, the newly minted “Ronald Reagan Highway” is only recognized in Kentucky and differs from the Ronald Reagan Cross County Highway in Cincinnati which also crosses Interstate 275.
