Newport courthouse near completion By Chris Mayhew cmayhew@nky.com

NEWPORT — Campbell County’s court system will shut down for the week of June 11-15 for the move into a new judicial center connected to the old Newport courthouse. “Nothing is going to go on that day or that week, and law enforcement will be notified,” said retired Circuit Judge William J. Wehr, chairman of the Project Development Board for the courthouse project. The final court date will be Friday, June 8, and the expectation is the courts will be open for business again Monday, June 18,

Wehr said. Final work on the new expansion of the Campbell County Courthouse in Newport is under way. The groundbreaking for the expansion, which will increase courthouse space to 103,700 square feet, was in September 2009. The $29 million expansion consolidates all court functions in Campbell County into one building, he said. "We’re under budget right now,” Wehr said. The expansion adds a four floor addition onto the historic Newport courthouse completed in 1884. The old courthouse will be renovated upon the comple-

tion of the new addition. Some tenants in the old courthouse office will remain. And other functions including the Campbell County Attorney will move from offices elsewhere in Newport into the old courthouse, Wehr said. The district court clerk’s office is currently housed in space adjacent to the county jail several blocks away from the courthouse in Newport on Columbia Street. Floor-by-floor, here’s what will be in the new judicial center addition: » First floor: Circuit Court and District Court Clerk office. » Second floor: District Court

with room for a third district court in the future. » Third floor: Family court with room for a second division in the future. » Fourth floor: Circuit Court. The third floor will also feature lots of conference rooms for mediation and attorney-client meetings and office space for senior judge work, Wehr said. The basement of the judicial center will feature a secure area for the inmates to enter from the jail and take private elevators directly to the court rooms, he said. Inmates have to be walked through public areas in the existing courthouse. The basement will also feature secure parking

for judges and the Circuit Court Clerk, Wehr said. All court rooms will also have video conferencing. Previously judges had to share one video conferencing system to have arraignments and other court proceedings with an inmate still at the jail, he said. The old courthouse has been in operation for more than 100 years, and the new judicial center addition is built to handle growth hopefully for at least the next 50 years, Wehr said. Wehr said he can’t wait for the project to be finished and the new judicial center to be open. “It’s kind of exciting after all this time,” he said.

BELLEVUE — Bellevue’s bridal district will be showing off what it has to offer in a non-traditional bridal show setting during the first annual Bridal Bash. The event, a collaboration between the district businesses and the Bellevue Renaissance, offers a fresh, more laid-back approach to a typical bridal show, offering products, services and information for those preparing to tie the knot. During the event from 6-9 p.m. Friday, May 11, Fairfield Avenue’s shops, galleries and restaurants will be open offering information and specials and several other bridal-related vendors will be set up along with sidewalk. “Along with the Fairfield Avenue businesses, who also have several other complimentary businesses, like a calligrapher, that are coming,” said Jody Robinson, the assistant city administrator. Along with the bridal-related vendors, the event is also bringing in music, dancing demonstrations and more, making it something anyone, even those not getting married, will enjoy, Robinson said. “This is event goes beyond

bridal parties,” Robinson said. “It will be a blast for anyone who enjoys music, shopping and walking along the avenue.” Bethany Flick from Lila Elliot Design, one of the event’s organizers, said the idea for the event came about as a way to promote Bellevue’s bridal district by doing something other than the typical bridal show. “We just wanted to put a different spin on what people are used to as far as bridal shows,” Flick said. “This event will be more laid-back and fun for everyone.” Event attendees will get to see people modeling dresses and tuxes along the avenue courtesy of Belle Bridal Boutique and Schrader’s Formal Wear and dancing demonstrations by Step N Out Dance Studio as well as participate in mini makeup sessions by 501 Salon and Spa and more. Anyone that preregisters will have a chance to win a giveaway basket worth more than $1,000, including an engagement photography session and discounts on a dress and custom invitations. Flick said the plan in to make the Bridal Bash an annual event. For more information visit www.bellevuebridaldistrict.com.
