Big Bone hosts 33rd annual Salt Festival UNION — Step back in time as Big Bone Lick State Historic Site returns to days long past during the 33rd annual Salt Festival Oct. 16-18. The festival in Boone County features demonstrations of pioneer living and skills, frontier life and Native American skills and traditions. Handcrafted items and foods will be for sale. The birthplace of American vertebrate paleontology, Big Bone Lick State Historic Site is located at 3380 Beaver Road, Union. Enjoy folk and bluegrass mu-
sic, pioneer cooking, listen to a storyteller, view prehistoric Ice Age artifacts and observe a blacksmith working red-hot iron. See how salt was extracted from the waters of Big Bone, watch a flint-knapper make a stone point and enjoy pioneer games. While visiting the park, be sure to drop by the park’s museum and visitor center to see some of the “big bones.” Don’t miss seeing the bison herd, the park’s living link to 10,000 B.C. A shuttle van will transport event-goers to and from the fes-
tival field to the center at regular intervals. From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, the park will host school groups at a cost of $2 per student. Schools interested in bringing classes to the festival should call the park at 859-3843522. Festival admission on Saturday and Sunday costs $5 per person; children ages 5 and under are free. The festival is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. For more park information, visit http://1.usa.gov/1KZoW30.

Boone County sets 2015 tax rates Amy Scalf ascalf@communitypress.com
BURLINGTON – Boone County residents have lower taxes this year. In August, the 2015 tax rates were set at $1.05 per $1,000 of assessed value for real property and $1.24 per $1,000 for personal property. Boone County Judge-executive Gary Moore said the real property rate is the same as the previous year and the personal property rate is lower than 2014. “The 1.24 rate makes us more business friendly and is a lower tax,” he said. “I am very pleased that the approved budget will continue to deliver quality services to our citizens with no tax increases for real property, while lowering personal property tax rates.” While county leaders project an increase in revenues from the occupational license fees, motor vehicle tax, franchise tax, net profit tax and business license revenue, there is no increase to the taxes. The 2015 motor vehicle tax rate is $1.52 per $1,000 of valuation, which is the same as the 2014 rate. Want to continue the conversation? Tweet @AmyScalfNky
