Walton-Verona tennis ends season

When Gene Kirchner decided to take on the task of leading Walton-Verona High School’s varsity tennis program in its first season, he was not sure his teams would even be ready to play varsity matches. Not only did the Bearcats play a full varsity slate, but both the boys and girls teams earned multiple victories. The boys finished 4-4 during the regular season. The girls posted a 3-6 record.

Flaig seeks recanvass

Precincts will be recounted on May 27 By Paul McKibben pmckibben@nky.com

Boone County Commissioner Cathy Flaig has asked the Boone County clerk’s office to conduct a recanvass of all precincts in the May 18 Republican primary election that she narrowly lost to incumbent Gary Moore for judgeexecutive. The recanvass is at 9 a.m. Thursday, May Moore 27, in the county clerk’s office at the Boone County Administration Building in Burlington. A recanvass is checking the numbers from Flaig each precinct to the final report. The numbers are from the voting machines at each precinct. Unofficial results showed Moore defeating Flaig by 74 votes (50.3 percent to 49.7 percent). A total of 12,146 votes were cast between the two candidates. The day after the election, Moore said he would probably request a recanvass, too, if the result was less than 100 votes. He said it’s normal to do that, his campaign understands it but he doesn’t expect any change. Rick Riddell, the county’s director of voter registration, said there were precincts that ran out of ballots. He didn’t know how many. In some cases eslate voting machines (voting machines for people with disabilities) were used when precincts ran out of ballots or until officials got new ballots back to them, Riddell said. Matt Parker, Flaig’s campaign adviser, said it was inexcusable that the clerk ran out of ballots. He said there were reports that in cases where precincts ran out of ballots, Republican voters received a Democratic ballot on the eSlate machines. Parker said a decision will be made about seeking a recount after the recanvass. Flaig would have to file a petition in Boone/Gallatin Circuit Court to request that and pay for the cost of the recount. The deadline for that is Friday, May 28.

Cities to honor the fallen By Justin B. Duke jbduke@nky.com

May is coming to a close and June is on its way. Before summer comes, cities are pausing to remember troops who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. In Florence, the annual Memorial Day Parade will start at 10 a.m. Monday, May 31, at Boone County High School and run to the Florence Government Center. Following the parade, a program will honor fallen soldiers at the Boone County Veterans Memorial at 11 a.m.

The memorial’s newest monument, for the War on Terror, will get special attention, said Vanessa Lenear, parks and recreation administrator. “Why don’t acknowledge those who are on there?” Lenear said. Family members of Tyler Warndorf, Adam Peak and Anthony Campbell, Boone County soldiers who have died in Iraq or Afghanistan, will be on hand and honored during the program. In addition there will be a military display with vehicles. “That’s something the kids like to look at,” Lenear said. The last year has been an

important year in Walton. Since last Memorial Day, seven of the city’s World War II veterans have died. “That’s a big number for a population of 3,000,” said City Council Member Lee Frakes. Seven wreaths will be laid at the Walton-Verona Veterans Memorial during the program that starts at 10 a.m. “We’re celebrating those (veterans),” Frakes said. After the program, there will be a lunch at the Walton Senior Center at 11:30 a.m. where there will be prizes for all veterans in attendance.

No raises yet for Boone workers By Paul McKibben pmckibben@nky.com

The Boone County Fiscal Court’s proposed fiscal year 2011 budget does not contain raises for its employees but officials might find a way to give workers more money. At a budget caucus meeting May 19, Commissioner Terri Moore asked for information about giving raises, possibly just a 1 percent hike. “Well, I’d like something looked at and I don’t think that we can continue to balance the entire county’s budget for (110,000)plus residents on the backs of our employees year after year after year,” she said. Sheriff’s and county clerk employees did not receive pay

increases in calendar years 2009 and 2010. Fiscal court employees did not receive raises for fiscal year 2010 that started July 1, 2009, and ends June 30, 2010. However, the county administration does plan to look at raises following the discussion with the Fiscal Court. Sheriff’s and county clerk employees did not receive any pay increases in calendar years 2009 and 2010. Fiscal court employees did not receive any raises in fiscal year 2010 (July 1, 2009, to June 30, 2010). Fiscal court employees did not receive merit increases but did receive a cost-of-living increase in fiscal year 2009 (July 1, 2008, to June 30, 2009). The county’s overall proposed

budget at $107.9 million is 4.6 percent less than fiscal year 2010’s budget. The budget has no new capital projects. County Administrator Jeff Earlywine said the public works fund is increased by about $1.3 million (closer to $1.4 million). “All of that money is earmarked toward an aggressive paving program,” he said. Earlywine said the county is not proposing to eliminate, introduce or to substantially change any service or program. “It’s business as usual proposed for fiscal year ’11,” he said. The first reading and the public hearing about the budget was scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 25, at the Boone County Administration Building in Burlington.
