Boone County’s two school districts are teaming up to save money. Both Boone County Schools and Walton-Verona Schools will partner up and apply for a state grant that would hire an energy manager. The position would be responsible for monitoring the districts’ energy usage and making recommendations for cutting consumption. “According to the state, there’s millions of dollars to be saved across the state,” said Boone County Schools Superintendent Randy Poe. If awarded, the grant would pay 75 percent of the energy manager’s salary in the first year and 50 percent in the second year. “We believe that the savings created by this position would fund the position for the third year and into the future,” Boone County Schools Deputy Superintendent Mike Blevins said in a memo to the Board of Education.
“These kind of positions scare me,” said Karen Byrd, a member of the Boone County Schools Board of Education. Creating a position like this could put the district in the position of having to fire an employee, Byrd said. “If the savings don’t cover the salary, you discontinue the position,” Poe said. If the grant is awarded, the energy manager would spend 7 percent of his or her time in Walton-Verona schools, a figure consistent with the amount of property the district has compared to Boone County Schools. Walton-Verona Schools already has a volunteer who works as an energy manager for the district. “It wouldn’t hurt to get another pair of eyes,” said Walton-Verona Schools Superintendent Bill Boyle. With the help of the volunteer, the district has already saved “tens of thousands of dollars,” Boyle said. Having another energy manager could only help the effort, he said. “It’s to save money – that’s the main thing,” Boyle said.

Boone nurse to aid Peru health clinics By Paul McKibben pmckibben@nky.com
Two nurses at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, including one from Boone County, are headed to Peru this summer as health care volunteers. Devin Robinson, who lives in the Belleview/McVille area, and Jude Holland of Cincinnati will participate with Project CURE (Commission on Urgent Relief & Equipment), an international organization based in Colorado. Robinson and Holland will be in Peru June 22 through July 2. They will visit Peru’s capital city Lima and Pucusana, a fishing village south of Lima. At both locations, the nurses will be participating in free health clinics and teaching. “Part of nursing is teaching and that is a perfect opportunity with a
bunch of people to get together and teach them ... about basic hand washing and why they should keep soap because one of the biggest problems in many of the Third World countries is parasitic infections,” Robinson said. First aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), treatment for drowning and treatment for choking also will be taught. Project CURE works to furnish medical equipment and supplies to health care workers. The group has worked in 120 nations. Robinson went to Pucusana with Project CURE two years ago. “I spent some time in Madagascar when I was younger and having that experience and I learned later in life how much that experience actually affected me,” she said. “There are so many peo-
