Good Friday service planned By Patricia A. Scheyer Community Recorder Contributor

Good Friday is fast approaching, and many people count on having a church service they can go attend to commemorate the occasion. The Hebron/Burlington Ministerial Association has once again scheduled an interfaith service for Good Friday at noon, and it will be held this year at Hebron Church of Christ. The church is located at 2966 Damascus Road, just off Petersburg Road. “This interfaith service predates me,” said the Rev. Dave Shockey of Hebron Lutheran Church. “I came in 1986, and it was already going on. We always have a service on Thanksgiving and one on Good Friday, and we hold it at different churches so no one church in our organization holds it every year.” Lasting less than an hour, the service is designed to give people of all denominations a place to go on Good Friday and listen to a message pertaining to the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Rev. Kelly Floyd, pastor of Impact Life Ministries, located at 5074 Limaburg Road in Burlington, is a new member of the ministerial association and will be the designated speaker at the service. “My message will be about grace and will center around the thief who was on the cross next to Jesus, who said remember me when you go into your kingdom,” Floyd said. “Jesus told him he would be with Him that day in paradise. I will talk about how the thief was saved by grace through faith, and how he found forgiveness.” Floyd’s ministry is only about six years old, having begun in a hotel with only nine members. He now has about 150 and it’s growing. His Web site is www.impactlifeministries.com. The Rev. Doug Eldridge, from the host church Hebron Church of Christ, is happy to hold the service at his church. “We are not looking to set a standard, we just want to show we are all doing the work of God,” Eldridge said. “We want to demonstrate that we as different congregations can get along and work together, and so should people. We want to emphasize the community.” The pastors are in agreement on that. “We want to bring people together,” Floyd summed up. “God didn’t tell us to form church clubs. We need to break down the denominational walls, and this service guides us in that direction.”

Boone Relay for Life fights because ‘cancer never sleeps’ By Patricia A. Scheyer Community Recorder Contributor

It is time to gather teams for the annual Relay for Life event, which will be held this year at Boone County High School on Burlington Pike in Florence on May 21 and 22 from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Relay for Life is a 24-hour fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. It is an all-night event, organizers say, because cancer never sleeps and neither do the people who fight the disease. “Many people think that the Relay for Life is just going to be sad, but in addition to remembering loved ones we have lost, it also celebrates survivors,” said Marlena Hodson of Union, event chairperson. “I got into this five years ago because my sister had leukemia as a child, and last fall she was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The doctors think they have it under control, but what they say is correct – cancer never sleeps.” The Relay for Life event has grown to be a signature fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. It started in 1985 when Dr. Gordy Klatt, a colorectal specialist, walked around a track for 24 hours to raise money for research. One man’s passion turned into an event that involves 3.5 million people in 5,000 communities across the nation and in 19 other countries. Boone County has the largest

Marlena Hodson, event chairperson for Relay for Life, and Jamie Webb, executive director for the American Cancer Society, look over a team leader packet at the office off Buttermilk Pike. Relay event in Northern Kentucky. “It’s really easy to sign up,” said Jamie Webb, executive director of the American Cancer Society in Northern Kentucky. “You just get a team together, and that can be friends, family or coworkers. And when you have anywhere from eight to 15 people on average, you call us at 859647-2226 and register the team. Then you make a commitment to raise money for the American Cancer Society. You can also register by visiting the Web site at www.relayforlife.org.” Each team is challenged to come to the event in May and have at least one team member on the track all night long. Most teams also raise an average of about $100 per person, and

that can be done before or during the event. Each team is also challenged to have some kind of booth, whether it is a game or has merchandise to sell. “Last year we had 35 teams and raised $118,000,” Webb said. “This year we have a goal of 40 teams who raise $127,000. All the money goes to research, education, advocacy efforts and free services like transportation of patients and wigs and prostheses.” Hodson and Webb would like to invite the community to come out and take part in this event which celebrates survivors, remembers those who have lost their battle, and encourages everyone to make a pledge to fight back in this battle that touches nearly everyone’s lives.
