FLORENCE – Turfway’s biggest event is racing closer. The $500,000 Horseshoe Casino Spiral Stakes will run on Saturday, April 2, and is the feature of the 12 races. The Spiral is a Kentucky Derby qualifier. The field of horses will be vying for position for not just this race, but the Derby itself. Gates open at 10 a.m. and the fes-
tivities will begin at 11:15 a.m. with the Spiral Parade. The Spiral Parade will be led by Funny Cide, the 2003 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner. Funny Cide will also lead the Spiral Stakes field from the paddock to the tack. “We don’t want anyone to miss the excitement of the Spiral Stakes, Turfway General Manager Chip Bach said in a statement. “The Spiral is one of just 35 races in the world that qualify horses to run in the Ken-
tucky Derby, and it’s right here in Florence. The VIP tent will be the host of many special events, including bidding on 50 special edition Maker’s Mark bottles. The bottles will benefit Cincinnati Therapeutic Riding and Horsemanship, which helps adults with disabilities through equine-assisted activities. “(Spiral Stakes) puts our town on the map in the racing world. ON TRACK TO FINDING GOD
Chaplain Eldridge serves 200 people who live at Turfway Park Sarah Brookbank sbrookbank@communitypress.com
FLORENCE – Before first post at Turfway Park racetrack a small group of people gather in an office near the paddock. They are the people who work and live on the backside of Turfway Park – from grooms to valets and kitchen workers – and they are joined by Chaplain Doug Eldridge. These are pre-race devotionals, a chance for a group prayer before the horses take to the track. El-
dridge asks the room what they would like to pray for. Chip Bach, Turfway general manager, answers “safety on the track. That’s what they always pray for, Eldridge said, the health and safety of their friends and colleagues about to take to the track. Eldridge works for the Kentucky Chaplaincy Association, which is overseen by a national organization. Recently the chaplaincy association had a booth at the North American See CHAPLAIN, Page 3A

FLORENCE – Tucked behind the hustle and bustle of U.S. 42 sits a new local restaurant that serves pancakes all day and a wide variety of home-cooked meals. Gunpowder Creek Cookery was opened in March by friends Scott Benke and Christine Feeback. It is located at 8645 Haines Drive. The two had always talked about opening a restaurant, so when Z’s Cafe closed, they took a chance. “The main thing is that we’re locally owned and operated and want to provide something for the community, said Benke, owner of Gunpowder Creek Cookery. The art on the walls and the people who work at the shop are all local, said Feeback, the general manager. Even the owner is locally sourced – Benke lives in Union and is from Erlanger. When his family moved to Union in 2003, he said it wasn’t quite as full as it is now. Now Benke and Feeback want to provide a place for the growing crowd of locals to come and eat with their families. Benke chose cookery for the name of his restaurant because it means the art or practice of preparing food. While they’re not artists, Benke said they’re getting better every day. See COOKERY, Page 2A
