BECAUSE COMMUNITY MATTERS
Fest spotlights heritage, talent By Stephanie Salmons ssalmons@nky.com
BURLINGTON — For the second year, the Historic Burlington Business Association and the Boone County Historical Society are joining forces to highlight local history and local talents. The Boone County Heritage Day and Chalk Festival is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 13, in the parking lot of the Boone County Administration Building, 2950 Washington St., Burlington. According to HBBA treasurer Linda Whittenburg, the group will have eight returning chalk artists from Boone Coun-
ty. They will vie for a viewer’s choice award and cash prize. This year’s event has a patriotic theme, she said. Participants will be doing art “with some reference by color or subject matter” on that theme. There will also be an open area for free drawing. Visitors can bring their own chalk or chalk can be purchased for an “inexpensive charge.” Whittenburg says there will be three art vendors set up with their wares for sale, a deejay and food available from Burlington’s Tousey House. “It’s a great way to view the talents of some of our local artists,” she said. “It’s a wonderful free event for the whole fam-

ily.” The festival will also feature a cruise-in. Organizer Rick Bingham says they’re encouraging vintage cars, though there are no requirements. The cruise-in, which too fea-
tures a patriotic theme, will also run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Administration Building parking lot. The Boone County Historical Society is also planning an exhibit of vintage farm equip-
ment and household items, president Betsy Conrad said. Larger items will be displayed on the grass near the group’s museum in the old Boone County Clerk’s building while smaller household implements will be inside the museum. There’s a “whole variety of old things that people bring in.” People who have old farming equipment and household items the historical society can borrow to use in the exhibit can contact Conrad at 859-371-5882, secretary Pat Yannarella at 859-835-2435 or vice president Virginia Lainhart at 859-689See HERITAGE, Page A2

HEBRON — A new multitenant development will bring a Cincinnati staple to Hebron. Terra Firma Associates will begin construction on Conner Shoppes, a 10,300square-foot retail building in the firm’s Conner Crossing development “within the next few weeks,” president Dick Haglage said. Built on Terra Firma’s “last available lot,” on the corner of Ky. 237 and Ky. 20, initial tenants include LaRosa’s Pizzeria, Firehouse Subs and a national cellphone provider. “We are in active discussions with other prospects to fill the few remaining spaces in the center,” Haglage said. While the actual store opening dates have yet to be determined, Haglage said they expect construction to be complete before the end of the year. “We just wanted to build a building to provide services for the neighborhood,” he said. Residents will “see uses that are customary for a neighborhood shopping center.” Want to continue the conversation? Tweet at @SSalmonsNKY
