Boone farmers market opens May 4 By Stephanie Salmons ssalmons@nky.com
BURLINGTON — Kicking off its 26th season at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 4, the Boone County Farmers Market is “the market that everyone’s come to know and love,” market director Coy Wilson said. According to Wilson, visitors can expect to see the same products and quality they’re used to and the “same friendly faces they’ve come to know. “Obviously, you don’t make it 26 years without the public supporting you and we want to thank them for their support over that time and hope for their continued support so we can be here for another 26-plus years.” Springtime hours for the mar-
ket, located at 6028 Camp Ernst Road, are daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. During the summer, between Memorial Day and Labor Day, the market will operate from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. The farmers market will open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily after Labor Day to around Halloween, when the market closes for the season. It will reopen for Christmas tree sales the day after Thanksgiving. “I think the biggest strength this market has always had is that everything here is truly locally grown and produced right here in Northern Kentucky by the person they’re (shoppers) purchasing it from,” said Wilson. Besides different educational and cooking demonstrations
provided by the extension service, the market provides an opportunity to truly buy local and support the local economy, he said. “If we don’t support local agriculture, we certainly aren’t going to have local goods,” Wilson said. “Everything is going to be from somewhere else.” Though work on a major road project is underway at the nearby intersection of Ky. 18 and Camp Ernst Road (Ky. 237), Wilson said organizers “certainly hope and don’t expect” any real impact this season. There is, he said “always going to be a way for the public to get into us.” Want to continue the conversation? Tweet at @SSalmonsNKY

Suit filed over redistricting N. Ky. takes state government to court By Scott Wartman swartman@nky.com
Northern Kentucky officials and residents who feel underrepresented in the Kentucky General Assembly have
taken the governor and most of state government to federal court. Boone County Clerk Kenny Brown, the judge-executives of Boone and Kenton counties, some members of the tea party movement and other residents filed a lawsuit April 26 in the federal court in Covington to compel the General Assembly
to finish redistricting before Nov. 4. If they can’t come up with a solution by then, the lawsuit asks the court to approve a plan drawn up by the plaintiffs. At stake, the plaintiffs say, is adequate representation in the legislature that Northern

Amazon.com is looking for more employees to work at its facilities in Hebron – a lot of them. Staff Management | SMX, the firm that hires temporary workers at Amazon, has an ongoing recruiting campaign at its offices on North Bend Road in Hebron. Chris Grider, account director for Staff Management | SMX, said the company hopes to hire 450 workers in the next several weeks and will continue to fill positions for Amazon throughout the year. “It’s been year-round for the past year, and it’s constant,” Grider said. “The requirements are proof of education (high school diploma or GED), ability to pass a drug screen and ability to pass a background screen.” The positions are temporary, but the company offers full- and part-time work schedules on all shifts with a wage of up to $11.50 per hour. Employees are being hired to work in all four of Amazon’s facilities in Hebron. Last year, SMX hired more than 5,000 employees for Amazon in Hebron, including more than 2,000 workers for the peak holiday season. Grider said the company offers weekly paychecks in a warehouse environment that is clean, climate-controlled and safe. Prospective

employees must be at least 18 years old, able to lift up to 49 pounds and stand or walk for the duration of a shift. Gloria Rosemarin, SMX’s national director of recruiting, said about 200 of its workers have been hired by Amazon this year. “The number of conversions (to permanent Amazon employment) changes every year, and it is based on the needs of Amazon and the performance of the individual, so it’s not a number that we can guarantee or forecast,” Rosemarin said. Rosemarin said the company has a very diverse work force. “It’s kind of something for everyone,” she said. “There are parents, people needing a second job, retired people, and there is a range of jobs within the warehouse.” Employees who apply in person and are selected for a position can begin working in about a week. Prospective employees can also apply online. Vol. 10 No. 18 © 2013 The Community Recorder ALL RIGHTS RESERVED
