All odds were against West Clermont High School’s Alex Click enjoying some of his last acts as a high school senior.

Because of challenges presented by Duchenne muscular dystrophy, attending the senior awards or walking in the high school graduation ceremony became impossible for Click.

However, this didn’t stop friends from taking the celebration to him.

Click has long been a classmate of Molly Bastin, their paths first crossing at Clough Pike Elementary.

“He’s just an amazing young man,” Molly’s mom, Missy, said.

When the Bastins learned that Click was unable to attend some of the final big events of his senior year, they rallied classmates, marching band members, high school Principal Randy Gebhardt and other administrators, along with former teachers, to gather and descend on Click’s house.

During this impromptu celebration, Gebhardt presented Click with his academic awards. The principal returned to the home this week to present his diploma.

Included in the awards was a certificate for making honor roll – a first for Click.

“He was just thrilled,” Gebhardt said. It was a great experience for him and everyone involved, he added.

In a Facebook post on Muscle Owl, a group dedicated to changing attitudes toward disability, Click’s father, Dave, expressed his gratitude.

“This was a total surprise to Alex and SO appreciated by us,” he said in the post. “Thank you West Clermont High School for celebrating with Alex! Truly a special day!”

Dave and Kristy Click have two children: an adult daughter, Kaitlyn, and Alex.

The Clicks adopted Alex from Romania when he was 2.

“From the moment he walked in the room to meet us, he walked directly to me and gave me a hug. It blew me away,” Dave Click recalled. “The connection was immediate.”

The Clicks enrolled their son in preschool at Clough Pike Elementary when he was 3 years old. That same year Alex was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

“It’s a progressive, harsh disease that destroys ev-

ery muscle in your body,” Dave Click said. Alex stopped walking at 8 and was in a wheelchair full-time.

Were it up to the Greater Milford Area Historical Society, the answer would be “no.”

“No” to a developer’s proposal to tear down the Millcroft Inn in Milford.

“No” to building six townhomes and six flats in place of the inn, which was a restaurant for nearly 70 years at 203 Mill St. The historical society says in a post on its Facebook page that members feel sad and hopeless about the possibility the Millcroft Inn will be torn down for one four-story building and two threestory buildings.

“The Greater Milford Area Historical Society is not in a position to purchase and maintain the Millcroft Inn as a historical property, however, we would love to see it remain in our community as yet another reminder of Milford’s earliest history,” the post stated.

“Although we are unable to intercede in the sale of this property in any way, the historical society would like to go on record as opposing the demolition of this site based on the loss of a historically significant location.”

Milford has made no decisions about plans developer PLK Acquisitions has made for the property.

The city has scheduled two public hearings to give residents the opportu-

nity to weigh in.

Built in 1812, the Millcroft Inn is in the heart of Milford’s downtown historic district and dominates the entrance to the city from Wooster Pike.

In addition to restaurants, the sprawling, nearly 14,000-square-foot inn also has been used as a private residence, a general store, doctors’ offices and a tea room.

But things have changed since the heyday of the Millcroft Inn, which sits on just under a half acre at the intersection of Water and Mill streets.

Across Water Street from the inn are the Riverwalk Flats & Rowhouses, built along the Little Miami River.

Across Mill Street from the inn is the Little Miami Brewing Co., which opened a microbrewery, bar and restaurant early this year.

LS Reddy Properties of Mason bought the Millcroft Inn at auction for $390,500 in 2016.

Public hearings on the future of the inn will be held: ❚ Wednesday, June 13 – Before the Milford Planning Commission at 6 p.m. ❚ Tuesday, July 17 – Before Milford City Council at 7 p.m. This is a change from the June date originally announced.

Both hearings will be held at Milford city hall at 745 Center St.

pen,” he said expressing gratitude for the kindness shown to him. It is that very kindness that Click regularly extended to his classmates that inspired them to bring senior celebrations to him.

“He’s the reason it happened,” Molly Bastin said. “He’s just wonderful and to make him smile the way he makes everyone smile makes you feel really good.”

Kristy Click said she was amazed that so many people took time out of their hectic end-of-school-year schedules to celebrate graduation with her son.

“We are very blessed to have the West Clermont administration,” she said. The fact that the principal is new to the community and only met Alex this year made it all the more moving, she added.

Police seek information on women in stolen checks case Milford Police Department is looking for help in identifying two women who they say cashed almost $12,000 in stolen checks in the Dayton/Beavercreek area.

The checks and ID used to cash the checks at different banks were stolen from a vehicle that was broken into while at a soccer field, police said.

The checks were cashed at the Fifth Third Bank located in the Beavercreek Kroger and at Mad River Wright-Patterson Credit Union location.

Society of Colonial Wars sends Bethel-Tate teacher back in history “In my professional career as a teacher, I’d rate this at the top.”

That’s how Bethel-Tate High School social studies teacher Tom McOwen summed up his week at the Colonial Williamsburg Teacher Institute on a scholarship from Ohio’s Society of Colonial Wars. The jam-packed week in Virginia included not only listening and seeing but also participating in historical re-creations and talking to costumed interpreters who transported him back in time.

“The costumed actors have done so much research,” McOwen told the Society. “They make an event or conversation seem just like it actually might have been.”

For example McOwen “met” President James Madison and tried to trip him up by asking what version of the Bible he read. The actor portraying Madison didn’t hesitate to name the president’s historically accurate preferred version.

McOwen and several fellow teachers sat in a jail cell with a shackled “Nat Turner,” a preacher who led a bloody slave rebellion in 1831 Virginia.

“The most poignant moment for me was when another teacher asked him, ‘You were tried and found guilty of murder. You are about to be executed. Do you consider yourself successful?’ He thought a long time and answered, ‘Well, was Jesus Christ successful?’ We were so stunned. It felt like the air went out of the room.”

Another memorable experience was meeting a woman who told about going, after emancipation, to claim her daughter who had been sold as a house slave.

The girl didn’t recognize her own mother and refused to leave with her.

McOwen assumed his own persona as a member of the public attending a witch trial.

The “public” could choose whether to voice support for or condemnation of the accused. “This was hard due to

knowing what really was going on, but my little band of merry men chose to have her executed due to the laws of the time. We were out-voted, however.”

McOwen experienced first-hand a sample of decisions involved in establishing a new nation. In a session on the nation’s fundamental principles and ethics, his group was asked whether the federal government should protect citizens’ freedoms or assure equal opportunity. “We had to choose; we couldn’t argue for both,” he said. “I hated choosing because there are so many situations that require different responses, but ultimately I chose protecting people’s freedom.”

In another session, his group explored protests leading to the Revolution, then went on to discuss other historic protests in U.S. history.

“History is about people’s stories, about how they weave together,” he told

At Colonial Williamsburg, McOwen lived on the main street, watching recreated Colonial-era traffic go by.

A side trip to Jamestown, settled by English in 1607, conveyed the settlers’ challenging situation.

“It was land surrounded by a swamp and hostile people. It’s a wonder any of them survived.”

Anderson High School students recently competed in the 15th annual Soap Convention, a competition between AHS chemistry classes.

Teams of students simulate a soap company by making soap, developing a marketing campaign and then competing for staff member votes during the Soap Convention. Votes are awarded based on the quality of the soap, marketing, knowledge and salesmanship.

Forest Hills Local School District officials have chosen Alana Cropper as their new treasurer.

The Board of Education will set Cropper’s salary and starting date at its Monday, June 25, meeting.The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at Nagel Middle School, 500 Nagel Road.

If the name of the new treasurer sounds familiar, it may be because Cropper last served as treasurer of the West Clermont Local Schools, where she worked more than a dozen years.

Cropper also served as Winton Woods City Schools treasurer.

Cropper succeeds Rick Toepfer, who resigned as treasurer of the Forest Hills Local Schools last October after a sexting scandal involving him and two other people. Toepfer did not admit any guilt in his resignation letter.

An interim treasurer has served in the Forest Hills Local Schools since Toepfer resigned. Meanwhile, Cropper has about 40 years of experience in the financial world.

She was a management consultant for Ernst & Young, an assistant auditor

Barbecue ribs, cooked to perfection for dad Rita’s Kitchen

I was at the grocery store the other day choosing baby back pork ribs (sometimes called loin ribs) when a young man came up and started asking questions about the ribs. “What’s the best ribs for barbecuing? And do you have a good recipe for them?” Well, in fact I do, and am sharing that recipe today, along with some tips I’ve learned along the way. These ribs are perfect for a Father’s Day celebration, served with a side of potato salad.

And as I’ve told you before, remember all the special “Dads” in your life.

Let’s start with the rub.

Ribs:

Rita's special BBQ rub

3-5 pounds baby back/loin pork ribs, with silver skin removed

Pull it off ribs. Sometimes it comes off in one long sheet; other times you have to start over with the knife.

Instructions:

Ingredients

Removing silverskin

Mix together: 6 tablespoons garlic powder 2 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons chili powder - I like Buena Vida 2 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons cumin 2 tablespoons salt

Also called the membrane, this skin covers the bone side of each rack. If left on, it keeps seasoning from penetrating and silverskin cooks up with a leathery texture. Some ribs are sold with skin removed. If you have to remove it here’s how: Slide a knife under the silverskin toward the beginning of the rack, or really just about anywhere. It if resists in one spot, try another.

2 teaspoons coarsely ground black pepper 2 teaspoons sweet paprika 2 teaspoons allspice

Lift and loosen it with the knife until you can grab it with a paper towel.

My abouteating.com site has information on different kinds of ribs, a photo tutorial of removing the silverskin and my family’s recipe for our own smoky BBQ sauce.

Seasoning and precooking ribs: This may be different from what you’re used to, but trust me, this method works perfectly. I like baby back/loin ribs, which cook up tender.

Season ribs with rub on both sides. Be generous and pat rub in.

Place on hot grill and "mark" them for a few minutes on each side. Marking means allowing the ribs to grill just until you see grill marks, that's all.

Bonus: this can be done ahead.

Preheat oven to 300.

Arrange ribs in single layers in baking pan and pour some chicken broth or beer around ribs, a generous cup or so.

This makes for a flavorful steam. Cover tightly with foil and cook until fork tender, anywhere from 2 to 2-1/2 hours.

You don't want them falling apart.

Another bonus: this can be done ahead of time too!

When ready to serve, heat grill to medium high. Place ribs on grill and start brushing with sauce. I do this several times on both sides. They’re ready when they are hot throughout and sauce is charred a bit.

Serve with additional warm sauce on the side.

Viewpoints Five ways we can help small manufacturers and boost the economy Melissa Mangold Guest Columnist Community Press

Wanted: Nimble-fingered industrial sewing operators with good work ethic.

If all American corporations that offshored manufacturing suddenly reshored, the American economy would suffer from a massive labor shortage.

And to be perfectly honest, small businesses like mine already are.

I’m the CEO of Casco Manufacturing Solutions, a woman-owned manufacturing company located in the heart of Cincinnati. We’ll hire nearly anyone as an industrial sewing operator—legal immigrants, ex-felons, recovering addicts and alcoholics. But the drug and opioid crisis have depleted my work force. We need help finding a reliable pool of industrial sewing operators who are motivated to come to work each day.

Turnover in our skilled workforce of industrial sewing operators is high. The problem: absenteeism.

I’m a Roman Catholic who believes part of her calling with Casco is to provide jobs for those who need them. Casco has a solid book of orders, but in order to take on new orders, I have to schedule employees for overtime.

My workforce reflects the face of America today. We have a fair number of employees from Guatemala and Mexico, Cambodia and Viet Nam. Our policy is that if you can speak and understand English and pass a drug test, you can have a job. (We need to be able to communicate for training instruction and safety reasons.)

Almost 30 percent of Cincinnatians live in poverty, twice the national poverty rate, according to CityLink Center, a citywide initiative which recognizes the need for integrated social services.

Clearly, we’re falling short in motivating people to work and keep their jobs.

Here’s what Casco’s doing to attract people who need jobs: ❚ Promoting manufacturing as a great career, especially for hands-on learners. Building a good work ethic in our community begins one job at a time, yet not everyone has the capacity, interest, or access to money to earn a college degree. We’re looking for a trade school or community college partner to work with local small businesses like mine to offer skilled-trade instruction. ❚ Collaborating with colleges and universities to steer graduates toward jobs at small businesses, too. Higher education tends to nudge students to apply for positions at large corporations, often ignoring small-and medium-sized businesses. Yet there is likely more opportunity and room to advance in a small business. At a small company, a young employee can really shine and make an impact. ❚ Providing bonuses to employees who refer friends for jobs. At Casco, we give employees a bonus when a referred friend is hired. Another bonus is given when the friend stays on the job for 90 days. ❚ Developing partnerships with social services agencies to provide small business jobs. Many small companies like mine take on the cost burden to train employees, but can’t afford to teach the life skills and work ethic needed to keep a job over time, especially for the addicted and homeless.

Once workers leave a halfway house like Talbert House, with whom we work, they often don’t have the support system to keep a job. Perhaps a longer stay or assignment of a coach to help them develop life skills would help. ❚ Supporting American Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), which bolsters our citizens and strengthens our country. Foreign labor does affect us, because American competitors using overseas manufacturers can sell products more cheaply than

those made in the U.S.A. With OEMs like us, we can work with smaller lots so customers can manage cash flow better and not get stuck with material they can’t sell.

Even if an American business pays minimum wage to employees, that’s nothing to sneeze at, especially since American companies pay FICA tax, Medicare, and state and federal taxes.

We have to ask ourselves, what is right and just?

Chinese factory workers earn about 3,000 Renminbi, or about $463 per month, based on an 8-hour, six-day-aweek schedule, according to a Thayer Certified labor audit from March, 2018.

Plus, it’s estimated that living expenses are about half the cost of a Chinese factory worker’s average income.

Here in the U.S., non-union factory workers in the non-durable goods manufacturing sector earn $3,320 per month, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. We have to find the right balance in order to allow American small businesses to grow and prosper and allow our workers to have a good quality of life.

I believe government, social services and business can win together, but we haven’t yet seriously discussed the most fair and ethical ways to make American small businesses truly successful. I’m glad we got the tax break. It should have been more. We have a lot of work to do to get more people to work so they take care of themselves and those they love.

schools, I believe it is necessary to look at the success story of the Detroit public school system since 1990.

That is the year when metal detectors were installed in the public schools there.

Only one inside-the-school shooting was reported in the time span since 1990 in an admittedly dangerous school district.

I believe metal detectors would be well worth the cost, both here and across the country.

I also believe that more teachers should be trained to recognize the signs of bullying, which is an important factor in many shootings.

Toll lanes, they’re not so bad We recently spent six days in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine.

It was horrible to have to slow down to 65 miles per hour for the toll lanes.

We thought it would be a good idea to slow down to 65 for the toll lanes but we didn’t want to get rear-ended by the self-absorbed tweeting nitwits in the Smart For Twos, so we stayed at 75-80.

Avoid a messy move out of a dorm, into a new home or moving a business Whether it’s across the street, across town, or across state lines, moving takes planning and packing.

Even when you think you’re prepared, problems often do show up. Scams involving moving companies are increasingly common, so it’s important to get the facts.

Choosing someone to pick up all your belongings and take them to another location is a scary prospect, and a lot of people aren’t clear on what they should know before they get started.

Know this: you have rights and responsibilities that protect both you and the moving company that begins when you decide to move until the time the items are dropped at the new door.

Everything starts with the estimate - have the company tell you exactly how much the move will cost in writing and read the fine print.

Know what estimate you received there are three types. ❚ 1. Nonbinding - the final cost may be different than what you were quoted originally. ❚ 2. Binding - the final cost is the amount you were told during the estimate. ❚ 3. Guaranteed to not exceed - the final cost must be at or lower than the number contained in the quoted price.

Insurance is important - the moving company is liable for the value of your items, but there are different levels of liability that may impact the amount of reimbursement you receive if an item is lost or damaged.

Verify licensing - interstate movers must be licensed and insured by the federal government. Trucks are assigned a motor carrier number, one that you can confirm with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Check out who you choose - hiring a moving broker is different than hiring a moving company; they act as middlemen between you and a mover, so make sure you know who you’re working with.

Unfortunately, scams are also something to be careful of when moving. One common scam is when a moving company lures a customer into a deal with low rates and then holds their items hostage in exchange for a ransom that’s two to three times higher than the original estimate. Another is when a deposit is put down on a truck and a moving date is agreed upon but the moving company never shows up.

There are a few red flags that can help you spot a shady moving company. Be so wary if they refuse to do onsite inspections; if they demand a large deposit in cash; or if they only have a P.O. box and have no listing of a brick and mortar location. Before packing the family wagon and following the truck to your new location, visit bbb.org to find a reputable moving company.

Former Moeller, Anderson slugger Zack Shannon finally picked in MLB Draft Scott Springer

In the middle of a drive home to Cincinnati for his great-grandfather’s funeral, Zack Shannon’s sorrow was interrupted by a call from the Arizona Diamondbacks. Suddenly, a long ride home from Cleveland, Mississippi (where he just finished playing for Division II Delta State) became more interesting.

After more calls, it became apparent the demands on Shannon might be too much. The family decided that Arval Reeves, a huge fan of his great-grandson, would rather have seen Zack sign a pro contract than attend his funeral. Then, perhaps a sign, as Shannon ran into a massive traffic jam along the way. Taking that as a hint, he turned around and

rerouted back to the Mississippi Delta to await word from Arizona.

“He’s always rooted for me,” Shannon said. “It was going to be super hard for me, I was going to have to push back days to make it out there and go to the funeral. They (His family) all thought I should turn around. I was going to keep going, but I hit standstill traffic. I took it as a sign that said, ‘Hey, turn around.’ “ His car ride was much like his path to the bigs, not exactly direct. Shannon attended two high schools (Moeller and Anderson) and four colleges (Chipola, University of Cincinnati-Clermont, Wabash Valley and Delta State). While his power never failed him, he was bypassed several times despite the sheer talent he often displayed.

At age 15, he played with the 18U Midland Redskins, a Connie Mack World Se-

ries contender each year. He also started for state champion Moeller his sophomore season, but then wound up having to finish at Anderson. Even last year when he was Division II Player of the Year at Delta State (.434 average 19 homers and 88 runs batted in in 58 games) he was not selected.

Finally, in the middle of what started to be a long ride home, the phone call came. After a .406 season with 31 homers and 93 RBI in a mere 53 games, Shannon will get his chance.

“It’s a great feeling,” Shannon said.

“I’ve been working hard for a long, long time and I’ve been down a windy road to get to where I am. It finally paid off.”

A couple times Shannon thought of hanging it up but kept going. Even last

If you happened to be watching college baseball on ESPN last week, you may have seen a familiar face on the field for Wright State.

The Raiders, by winning the Horizon League, were sent out west to the NCAA Regional where they faced Stanford and Baylor on back-to-back days.

Starting in right field and hitting third for Wright State was Peyton Burdick, formerly of Glen Este High School.

Burdick doubled in their game against host and top-seed Stanford, which went more than four hours before the Cardinal prevailed 4-3 in 13 innings.

The next day the Raiders went back and forth with Baylor of the Big 12 before the Bears pulled away to win 11-5 to end Wright State’s season at 39-17.

“Everyone around here (Wright State) was happy that we got to go,” Burdick said. “But we went to take care of business. We thought we were the better team in that regional and just didn’t get to show it. It was a really close game (Stanford). We just didn’t execute in certain situations. We really could have won that game.”

For his efforts this season, Burdick, now a redshirt sophomore, was 2018 Horizon League tournament MVP for Wright State. After missing 2017 due to Tommy John surgery on his right elbow, the former Glen Este Trojan reSee HORIZON, Page 2B

CLERMONT COUNTY - After a 22win season as head of the Bethel-Tate High School girls basketball team, Dave Fallis is moving over to Milford to take over the Lady Eagles program.

In their first season under Fallis in Division II, Bethel-Tate went 22-3 this past winter.

Previously in Division III, Bethel-Tate was a back-to-back district champion.

The 2017 team finished 19-6 and made it to the regional semifinals, while the 2016 team was 18-9 and a regional finalist.

"I had wonderful kids and had the full support of the administration," Fallis said of his nine-year Bethel-Tate tenure.

"I'll never forget that for the rest of my life. Hopefully that's prepared me for this

opportunity and hopefully, we can do some special things in Milford in the near future."

In his last four seasons at Bethel-Tate, the Lady Tigers were 78-27.

Fallis was named Southern Buckeye Conference Coach of the Year in his division in 2011 and shared the award with Williamsburg's Mike Madsen in 2017.

"It's very exciting going to Division I coaching in the ECC," Fallis said. "It's an unbelievable opportunity and I can't wait to start! They've got a good core of players coming back. They've got some younger kids coming up into the system that are really talented. We've just got to put all of the pieces together."

He takes over a Milford team that was 8-16 (2-12 Eastern Cincinnati Conference) last season.

"We will be definitely having a camp experience for sure," he said.

The recommendation of Coach Fallis will be voted on at the next Milford Exempted Village School Board meeting on June 21.

chance to prove his doubters wrong with Arizona.

“That’s the goal,” Shannon said quickly.

In Cleveland, Mississippi, the locals enjoy watching the 6-foot-3, 230 pound Shannon launch moon shots with his 34 inch, 32-ounce weapon.

“At Delta State, it’s a small town,” he said. “The people come out to the game and we fill the stadium up constantly.

Coach (Mike Kinnison) has us do a lot of community service work too which gets us closer with the city. It’s really cool being down there.”

Still a long way from Chase Field, he

turned stronger than ever starting all 56 of Wright State’s games.

In his initial campaign with the Raiders, Burdick hit .289 with four homers and 31 runs batted in. After a year off to strengthen his injured arm, he came back a ripped 210 pounds (up nearly 40 from his high school days) and finished offensively at .347 with nine homers and 65 runs batted in to make First Team Horizon League.

“I’ve got a weight coach up here that put me on a meal plan,” Burdick said of his strong forearms. “I’m supposed to eat 4,500 calories every day. I’m keeping up on that and living the good lifestyle. It will get you to where you want to go.”

At Glen Este (now part of West Clermont High School as they merged with Amelia), Burdick was a regular presence in football, basketball and baseball with his older brother, Tyler. Tyler and Peyton are 14 months apart and very close. Now in the Marines stationed in southern California, Tyler Burdick made the trip to northern California to watch his brother play in Palo Alto.

“It was great, I got to see him for the first time since Christmas,” Burdick said. “It was really special because he hasn’t seen a lot of my games. He’s been out in California doing all of his stuff. It was really good because my parents couldn’t come because my sister had (West Clermont) graduation.”

Now a junior scholastically, Burdick was paying casual attention to the MLB Draft. Given the right offer, he’d be interested in making the professional jump. If not, he’s dedicated to improving himself and the Wright State program that supported him when he was off injured.

“I love it up here,” Burdick said. “Our baseball program’s top notch because they really work on developing you. If you go to some big-time schools and come in and don’t perform, it’s just the next man up; they don’t really care about you. They really work on your development as a person, player and a student. It’s a little bit more than baseball up here.”

Admittedly though, the baseball’s been fun. Against the University of Illinois-Chicago, Burdick was able to quiet some chirping opponents by blasting a ball nearly onto I-680 over the Nischwitz Stadium fence in the recent Horizon League tournament.

“I got a 2-1 fastball right out over the plate,” Burdick said. “I hit it and that was all she wrote. It was kind of cool because that put us up a run. We have a long history with UIC. They’re our inconference rivals.”

Thanks to Dr. TImonthy Kremchek (Reds Medical Director), Burdick’s elbow is fine and the year of strengthening benefited him immensely.

“It actually made me better this year than if I had played my freshman and sophomore year,” Burdick said of the year of rehabilitation. “Wright State is really about you as a person. Some schools would have just made me hit my sophomore year. I took the year and got better.”

It also gives Burdick leverage with two more years of eligibility with the Raiders should the professional opportunities not feel right. A summer in the Cape Cod League should also boost his stock.

“It’s a great opportunity to set myself up for next year,” Burdick said.

He hopes to someday realize the dream he had back when he was playing whiffle ball in the backyard with Tyler.

“It’s crazy that I actually have a chance,” he said. “I’m truly grateful for everything.”

“I’ve never played in a closed dome before, so that will be pretty cool,” Shannon said.

Shannon is due to be in Arizona by this weekend. The rest has yet to be written.

Howdy folks.

Hope your electricity was not out too long last week. Mine went out at 3 p.m. on Thursday and came on at 3 p.m. on Friday – that was a bad storm. If a person had a generator you were lucky.

I have never seen grass grow as fast as it does this year. It seems I could mow every three days to keep the yard looking good.

The honeybee inspector was here last week to check my bees. They were fine and I got another swarm and they are working good.

Talked to Mike at the Boars Head Bait Shop and he said the fishing is extra good. The crappie, channel catfish, stripers and bass are on a feeding spree so get your tackle and go get some fish to eat. Mike said some of the channel catfish were in the 8-pound class. The stripers were between 3 and 9 pounds.

That size stripers will give a good fight and you need a good line. Some of the crappie are between 9 and 12 inches long. The fishing in the Ohio River is also good with different kinds of fish. When you fish down in the river, please don’t get up in the locks. The barges can’t stop and that causes problems.

My favorite birds are the hummingbirds. They are sure drinking lots of sugar water. I have a couple here and I hope to see a few more come in. Last year I

had 8 to 10 most of the time. I go through a lot of sugar feeding them.

The bass tournament on Wednesday evening has been very good. Grant Lake has some extra big bass. The winner at the tournament was around 12 to 14 pounds. Grant Lake has really become a good bass lake.

This morning I went to Nurri funeral home for a visitation for a lady – Linda Bryant. Her son married my granddaughter – his name is Jason. She was a very loving lady. She had lost her husband a while back.

I got back from talking to the seniors at the senior center earlier today. There were about 50 there today. As I left this morning, Mr. Chester was on my bed. He doesn’t like to be disturbed until he has his nap.

There are some folks in Hamersville that put boxes together for the service folks. They put 87 boxes together. The cost to ship these boxes is $13.75. They are with the Matthew 25 Ministries. The boxes contain shaving cream and other items the service folks can’t get over there. This is wonderful.

The food pantry at the Catholic Church is the second Friday of each month from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

James R. Geyer CINCINNATI - James Richard Geyer died on May

31, 2018 in N. Andover, MA. A long-time resident of Cincinnati (1950-2010), he was born in South Bend, Indiana on December 17, 1922, the son of Leo and Claire (Place) Geyer. He received his BSME degree from Purdue University in 1943 and enlisted in the Navy. He was trained at Annapolis and commissioned as a LT.(JG) in December, 1943. In July 1944, he married Jean Wright, the love of his life. Jim served aboard the USS Shannon DM2 until the end of the war in 1946. He took a position at General Electric in Evendale as a Mechanical Engineer designing jet engines with a focus on safety, retiring after 41 years. He could fix anything and volunteered repairing tape recorders for the blind. Jim loved people and was devoted to Jean (his wife of 66 yrs.), his family, the church and his many friends.

He enjoyed playing bridge, dancing, and vacationing with his children and grandchildren. In his later years, his great grandchildren were a special source of joy. His sense of humor and fun-loving spirit carried him through his entire life and uplifted those around him. Surviving are: his sister Helen Geyer Czenkusch; two daughters: Jane Gossard (David), Martha Helm; son Jim Geyer (Carol); seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Saturday, June 23rd, from 11AM until the time of funeral service, 12Noon at Armstrong Chapel UMC, 5125 Drake Rd. (45243) Indian Hill. Greater Cincinnati Women’s Thursday Mornings Out On Thursday mornings women of all ages share their hearts and lives at the Miami Valley Christian Academy in Newtown for a time of fellowship, inspiration, and encouragement.

Outpost Ministry will be meeting Thursdays at 9:15-11 a.m. on June 14, June 21, June 28 and July 12, and July 19. Fellowship starts at 9:15 a.m. with refreshments, and the program will start at 9:45 a.m.

Outpost is inspiring speakers and uplifting singers, with the hope of sharing, growing spiritually with no ties to a particular church or denomination.

Allison Musgrove wants to develop a product that will meet a world need and save lives.

The Turpin High School senior got that inspiration after seeing her neighbor come to her school and demonstrate an inexpensive power source that purifies water.

Musgrove says, “I thought it was great someone has found a way to use math and science, my favorite subjects, to solve a world problem.”

Musgrove is this year’s recipient of the Walter Comstock Memorial Scholarship. The award is

Little kids hook big fish and littlest angler hooks biggest fish Lilly Sunday, 22 months old, caught a 5.97-pound catfish to the take the prize during the Clermont County Park District’s annual Matt Maupin Memorial Fishing Derby at Pattison Park.

“It was a great day, exciting to see so many kids out here fishing,” said Steve Statman, president of the East Fork Bass Anglers. “We had 80 kids registered - which is up from last year – and it was amazing how fast they started catching fish.”

In fact, the first fish of the day came in five minutes into the two-hour competition. The first of three albino catfish (and four other tagged fish) came in at the six-minute mark to earn special prizes.

“I don’t remember the last time we had so many tagged fish caught,” Statman said. “I don’t think we’ve ever had more than one albino. That was pretty neat.”

In addition to her lunker, little Lilly – who only weighs 30 pounds herself – landed three other fish to win the 7-andunder age group for total weight with 13 pounds. Alex Richey, 12, took the overall title for most weight, catching eight fish that totaled 17.58 pounds.

Isaiah Adkins took biggest fish (4.32 pounds) in the 8-11 age group, while Connor Sunday won most weight with 9.91 pounds. In the 12-15 age group, Athena Black took the biggest fish at

4.63 pounds.

On the other end of the scale, literally, Mason Dobbratz snagged a .03-pound bluegill for the smallest fish prize.

Jenna Daniel won the 11-and-under casting contest in a playoff, while Elaina Greg won the 12-15 division.

The Park District, Bass Pro Shop and Hamilton Bait Shop provided prizes.

The Park District also provided hot dogs, snacks and drinks for their hungry guests.

“This is a great event for the kids,” Statman said. “It gets them outside and out from in front of a screen. Some of the younger ones, if it’s their first time, they might be a leery of baiting a hook or holding a fish they’ve caught, but you can see by the end of the day they are having a lot of fun.

“A lot of outdoor activities are dying out, but we want to keep this one going.

Once you get the kids out here and put a pole in their hands, there’s almost an innate appreciation of nature that kicks in for them.

“You don’t have to be athletic to fish.

You don’t need any special skills or any super-expensive equipment. You just need to be able to go outside and enjoy the water.”

Jacob Raynor’s wish is being granted by Kids Wish Network Four-year-old with Structural Brain Defect gets the playground of his Dreams for his wish from the Kids Wish Network Batavia resident Jacob Raynor’s wish is being granted by Kids Wish Network.

Wish Kid Jacob has been diagnosed with a life-threatening condition called Chiari malformation or structural defects in which brain tissue extends into the spinal cord and into the part of the brain that controls balance.

For his wish, four-year old Jacob wanted an all-new playground in his backyard that he could play on anytime he wants. With the help of local Cincinnati Sam’s Club No. 6528 and their amazing donation, we could make Jacob’s wish come true!

Jacob was born with Chiari malformation, a condition that causes the cerebellum (the part of the brain that controls coordination and muscle movement) to push into the space normally occupied by the spinal cord. Having Chiari also led him to develop a syrnx, a fluid filled cavity in his spinal cord that required surgery.

Jacob suffers with multiple symp-

toms from these conditions including headaches, muscle weakness, numbness in arms, hands and legs, and body temperature issues. He also has difficulty sleeping, and often wakes up in the middle of night from the debilitating pain.

Challenges with his health continue... genetic testing showed an indication of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. EDS is a group of inherited disorders that affect connective tissues, and a diagnosis can be confirmed when Jacob turns 5.

Even though Jacob previously had surgery to repair the syrnx, he was still experiencing pain in his hands and feet.

An MRI revealed further issues, and he needed an additional brain surgery. Jacob’s conditions have also caused delays in speech and motor skills.

He undergoes physical therapy, and due to some of his medical issues, he can’t participate in high impact sports.

Jacob loves the color blue, trains, bouncy balls, Minions and Spiderman.

He has spurts of energy, and is happiest when he’s at the playground – he especially loves slides.
