On Friday, March 29, 5-year-old Brendan Hogan came home from preschool to fi nd his bedroom transformed into a Monster Jam den. There were Monster Jam posters on his walls, Monster Jam trucks, hats and helmets stacked atop every piece of furniture, Monster Jam bedclothes on his bed. Even, thanks to Monster Jam and Operation Homefront, a real-live Monster Jam driver. Standing in the middle of everything was Kayla Blood, a former member of the National Guard who hails from Lafayette, Louisiana. She now power-drives Soldier Fortune, a 10,000-pound, 1,500-horse power hog of a truck during Monster Jam truck races in shows across the country and on television. So how did Brendan, who lives in Union Township, get so lucky? Because Friday, March 29, it was Brendan’s turn. Brendan’s turn to take center stage in a family often absorbed with caring

Coney Island Amusement Park is the venue of an inaugural event that will likely satisfy foodies. The newly launched nonprofi t TriState Food Truck Coalition is hosting its fi rst Food Truck Rally 2 to 10 p.m. Saturday, April 27, in the Land of Oz shelter area at Coney Island. Nearly 20 trucks are signed up for the event, which also serves as a benefi t for the Mount Washington Elementary School Foundation. Trucks signed on include: Sweets & Meats BBQ, Hungry Bros., Stellar Street Eats, Empanadas Aqui, Just Q’in BBQ,Johnny’s Creamy Whip,Get Loaded, Patriot Grill, Rhino’s Frozen Yogurt & Soft Serve, Chicken Mac Truck, Renegade Street Eats, and Roll On In. Admission to the event is free. There is a $6 parking fee which will benefi t Mt. Washington Elementary. The key organizer of this event and founder of the new food truck coalition is Sweets & Meats BBQ owner and the 2019 Ohio Small Business Person of the Year Kristen Bailey. As a lifelong Mount Washington resident, Bailey is focused on community. She still lives in the community where she grew up and attended elementary school. She opened her fi rst brick-and-mortar location there. Bailey remains involved in Mt. Washington Elementary and is a member of the Local School Decision Making Committee. As a member, Bailey said she was aware of the need for a solid fundraising opportunity at Mt.
