SPORTS 1B Tracksters make final turn

BECAUSE COMMUNITY MATTERS

Dayton officer wins Rotary police award Chris Mayhew cmayhew@communitypress.com

COLD SPRING - Sgt. Gilbert Marksberry, Campbell County Rotary’s Policeman of the Year, raised $8,400 himself so Dayton, Kentucky, can have a K-9 unit. Marksberry was honored for taking on additional duties for Dayton Police Department as one of four police dog handlers in Campbell County. Dayton had $6,000 of the $12,000 needed to purchase and train a police dog. Marksberry raised $8,400 from private donations to buy Tesa, his 2-year-old Belgian Malinois, and pay for training together. Tesa is trained to track fugitives who are on foot and to detect drugs including heroin and methamphetamine. City police departments for Newport and Highland Heights and Northern Kentucky University are the only other agencies with K-9 units in Campbell County. Marksberry responds to calls for K-9 unit assistance for other departments in Campbell County. Northern Kentucky has about 14 police K-9 units with two each working for county departments in Boone and Kenton counties, two in Covington, two in Ludlow, one in Florence and one at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport. Dayton hired Marksberry more than a year ago. Previously, Marksberry has been an officer for Campbell County Police Department and Kentucky Department of Alcohol Beverage Control. David Halfhill, Dayton’s chief, brought Marksberry to Rotary’s April 27 meeting on a pretense of a possible grant for canine body armor. “I’m still in shock of even being nominated,” Marksberry said. Halfhill said Marksberry completes all of his other patrol and shift officer duties in addition to being a K-9 handler. Training K-9 dogs is “passion,” Marksberry’s Halfhill said. “You’ve got to be a hard

worker to be a handler,” he said. “The dog reflects the work ethic of the handler.” Marksberry is always a hard worker, Halfhill said. “He always goes above and beyond,” he said. “He’s very dedicated and loyal.” Marksberry’s wife, Gillian, said she sees her husband’s extra effort during daily training of Tesa at home.

“I see the countless hours he puts in the training of the dog when he’s not working and clocking hours,” she said. Campbell County Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 10 helped Rotary choose Marksberry for this year’s annual award, said club president Arnd Rehfuss of Alexandria.
