News and Product Round-up Safe Pets and People

T

op canine gift brand Yappy. com has become the latest organisation to join the national Safe Pets and People campaign. The campaign, which is backed by the RSPCA, iPET Network, The Groomers Spotlight and Street Paws is calling for mandatory first aid qualifications for all pet professionals. At the moment people who work with the nation’s pets such as dog walkers, groomers and pet sitters do not have to know what to do in an emergency. Many people in these industries believe that in order to show a high level of competence, regulation is essential, and a change.org petition has been launched at www. safepetsandpeople.org Yappy.com, which provides a range of personalised canine-themed merchandise went one step further recently, by hosting a canine first aid course at its dog-friendly Manchester offices. Safe Pets and People ambassador, qualified veterinary nurse and canine first aid expert Rachel Bean, said: “It is essential that our pet service industries

4 | www.technogroom.co.uk

take the welfare of animals seriously and make sure they know what to do in an emergency. “Many businesses do courses themselves because they really care, but without regulation we can never be sure that all animals are in good hands when they go to the groomer, sitter or walker. “It is wonderful that firms like Yappy. com are taking their responsibilities seriously too, and by spreading the word they are helping Safe Pets and People to make this much-needed change.” Alison Parsons, PR Manager at Yappy.com said: “The team regularly bring their dogs into the office on a rotation basis and we’re always looking for new ways to improve our environment to ensure that the dogs are happy and safe. “Our team recently attended Rachel Bean’s Canine First Aid course to ensure that our dog-loving team are better equipped to understand basic first aid and what to do if your pet is choking or suffering from heatstroke. After taking part in the course, our staff felt much more confident that they would know what to do if their pet falls

ill or becomes injured. “I would urge any professional working with dogs to sign up for the course and ensure they’re confident in handling an emergency situation whilst a much-loved pet is in their care. “Having a basic knowledge of first aid ensures that you’re much better equipped to deliver potentially lifesaving procedures such as CPR and save precious minutes until you can get professional help.” Sarah Mackay and Fern Gresty of the iPET Network, which has spearheaded the campaign, said: “Thank you to Yappy.com for throwing their weight behind Safe Pets and People. “This is an important cause, and we don’t think that lots of people realise that the pet professionals they trust don’t actually need to know what to do in a crisis. “Big brands like Yappy.com spreading the word helps to get our message across to more people than ever, and we hope that everyone will sign the petition and make their feelings known.” To find out more and sign the petition go to www.safepetsandpeople.org

Pet-friendly Office Opens

P

et food subscription company Bella & Duke has opened the UK’s most pet friendly office as work life returns to normal with the addition of some four-legged team members. A collaborative effort between pet experts at Bella & Duke and the build and design team at Space Solutions, has seen the creation of what is believed to be the UK’s most pet friendly office. A number of benefits, services and facilities have been implemented to improve employee welfare as well as their four legged companions, including: • Full-time Pet & People ‘Park Ranger’ to offer pet support ensuring that the needs of office pets as well as visiting pets are being met • Bella & Duke’s in-house expert behaviourist, Caroline Spencer, who’s there to ensure pets are at their happiest when in the office. There will also be the opportunity for employees to learn from Caroline and improve knowledge of dog body language and behaviour • In-built kennels for a pet safe and cosy space to relax • Designated picket fence pet sensory garden

6 | www.technogroom.co.uk

• Agility courses and fun interactive areas for pets to blow off steam, learn new tricks and bond with their owners • Pet friendly decor and design, with specific plants and flowers such as areca palms, banana plants and aspidistra. As well as a selection of pet friendly herbs in the pet sensory garden • Calming sprays • Toys, snuffle mats and other enrichment • Library books where pet owners can educate themselves on how to look after your pet Research commissioned by Bella & Duke found nearly 80% of office workers in the UK are currently unable to take their new pet to work due to it not having the adequate facilities, which is costing over a third of Brits (39%) on average £100 per week equating to over £5,000 annually on pet day-care. Mark Scott, CEO of Bella & Duke, said: “Our pets have always been right by us, even more so during lockdown, so we felt it was time we did right by them. We hear of companies talking about being pet friendly, but with pet wellbeing at the core of what our company does, we wanted to take it one

step further and create THE UK’s most pet friendly office. “Bella & Duke has over 130 employees with over 60 pets between them from cats and dogs to ferrets and snakes, so we had to make sure our new office space was adaptable to meet our employee needs as well as their companions. “It’s our mission to help pets live a happier life, so we encourage more businesses to think about their pet friendly office and work policies to enjoy the benefits four-legged employees can bring.” Research helped inform the key design aspects to ensure a pet friendly office, with Brits revealing the the top five ways in which they would like their office to be more pet friendly; 1. Designated areas for pets such as a cattery or kennels 33% 2. Pet insurance (25%) 3. Pawternity (paid leave after getting a pet) (23%) 4. Treats and calming spray available throughout (23%) 5. Ensure pet friendly plants and flowers (22%)

Reforms to Pet Microchipping Regulations in England Set Out • Changes to database system follow recommendations of the Pet Theft Taskforce • New requirements will apply to both cats and dogs • Improvements will make it easier to reunite lost or stolen pets with their owners New proposals to make it easier to reunite lost or stolen cats and dogs with their owners were set out by the Government today. An eight-week consultation will seek views on improvements to the pet microchipping database system, including faster access for approved users and regular reminders for keeping records updated which will help improve breeder traceability. The recommendations follow last year’s Pet Theft Taskforce report, which highlighted the need to improve navigation of the database system and the transfer of keepership records. The consultation seeks views on new requirements for registering additional details and a single point of access, so microchip records can quickly be accessed by approved users to help identify the owners and keepers of pets. The transferring of keepership records will also be strengthened to prevent lost or stolen animals being re-registered without the keeper being aware, and to stop the creation of duplicate records. The proposals aim to improve breeder traceability by making it compulsory for the breeder’s details to remain on the database for the lifetime of the animal - even when the animal changes keeper or when the microchip record is transferred to another database. Animal Welfare Minister Lord Goldsmith said: “Pets are much loved members of the family, and microchipping is the best way of making sure owners can be reunited if their pet is ever sadly lost or stolen. 8 | www.technogroom.co.uk

“We have reviewed the current regulations and the Pet Theft Taskforce’s recommendations, and it is clear improvements are needed to better protect the welfare of our nation’s pets. These proposals will create a more effective system to better animal welfare and deter pet theft.” David Bowles, Head of Public Affairs at the RSPCA, said: “We are pleased to see Defra launching a consultation into improvements to the microchipping database system. “We’d support the introduction of a single, centralised database of microchipped cats and dogs or would love to see better collaboration and communication between the current 16 separate databases. “This would make it much easier to quickly reunite stray, missing and stolen pets with their owners and would also save a lot of time for charities, such as the RSPCA, local authorities and vets when they’re trying to trace an owner. Justine Shotton, British Veterinary

Association President, said: “We’re delighted that the Government is gathering views on how to make the microchipping system fit for purpose. We strongly recommend microchipping as a safe, effective and permanent way to identify individual animals, but the sheer number of databases and the fact that they don’t routinely communicate with each other currently present significant barriers to successful reunification of lost pets and owners. “Streamlining the system into a single point of entry and driving up standards across all databases would help to spare heartache for many pet owners and start things on a positive footing when compulsory cat microchipping is rolled out next year.” The changes will also apply to cats after 99% of people supported a proposal to introduce compulsory cat microchipping in a recent consultation. Cat microchip records will be stored on the existing database system and benefit from the new improvements.

Can lopay really save you money on every transaction? We find out.

W

hen you run a small business, details make all the difference. Like how you take the time to understand every customer. Employing the right people who get how you work (not so easy, that one). Finding the best value products and generally keeping overheads down whenever and wherever you can. So when we heard about a new payment app that claimed to save you more money on every transaction compared to Zettle or SumUp, then like every dog hearing the word ‘biscuits’, our ears pricked up. We did a little digging and discovered that lopay is a new UK company with UK-based support. The team’s background is in financial technology so they know how to create and deliver a dependable service. And all payments are supported by Apple Pay and Google Pay. So far, so nice to hear. Then we spoke to Richard Carter, CEO of lopay, to find out more about their approach: ‘We set up lopay in direct response to all those companies who really aren’t on the side of hard working small businesses. We wanted to combine the lowest rates with simple-to-use tech and superb customer service. With thousands of customers signed up this year – and so many giving us five star Trustpilot reviews – we know we’re on the right track.’ Richard Carter, CEO, lopay What’s really interesting to every dog groomer and dog walker out there is

12 | Total Grooming Magazine

that lopay transaction rates start at just 0.79%. So yes, compared to Zettle and SumUp, this is half their rate (it’s actually marginally better). We did some rough maths and that means, on average, the typical dog groomer would save around £500 to £600 a year just on transaction fees. So basically you’re adding that amount to your income every year for just switching providers. On top of that, lopay lets you decide when payments hit your account - right now, tomorrow, next week, even at weekends. The transaction rate changes depending on when you want your money, but we think that flexibility is pretty useful. Especially if there’s a point in the month when cash flow is an issue. Plus, you get a free card reader (these are normally about £30), clear and simple reporting and you can even take deposits for bookings. And as for that UK-based support, we downloaded the app and got in touch with lopay’s customer service team. The wonderful Lucinda was so

helpful it’s worth signing up just for her expertise and support. After speaking to Richard and hearing all about his plans for the future of lopay – regular software updates, new services always being added and so on – what struck us is that this is not some faceless multinational conglomerate. It’s a human, hands-on, passionate company run by super smart people who really are on the side of small businesses like yours. In fact, we liked Richard so much we’ll let him have the final word… ‘We listen to every single customer comment. We’ve had some brilliant ideas in that we implemented, and some concerns we addressed immediately. Anything we can do to make lopay better and more useful to you, I promise you we will do it. That’s what we’re here for.’ Richard Carter, CEO, lopay You can download lopay from the App Store and start taking payments in minutes.

Forthglade to help Brits brush up on their knowledge of dental care for dogs

D

evon based pet food makers Forthglade have joined forces with Veterinary surgeon and TV presenter, Steve Leonard to help dog owners learn more about good dental care for their canine companions. A recent survey by Forthglade, of UK dog owners showed that 95% of Brits are not taking their dog for the recommended number of dental check-ups, which vets explain should be every six months. 1 in 4 people surveyed agreed that dog dental care is as important as overall veterinary health, but said they avoid brushing their dog’s teeth as they believe their dog “doesn’t like it”. Although brushing a dog’s teeth is seen as the gold standard of dental care, 30% of Brits admitted to never brushing their dog’s teeth at all. “Improved education around dog dental care is essential to help dog owners explains TV vet Steve Leonard. 14 | Total Grooming Magazine

We know how much Brits love their dogs, and often it’s simply a lack of awareness that leads to dogs needing teeth removed, and often lots at one time. It’s not just older dogs but younger dogs too who are affected terribly by periodontal disease – over 87% of dogs over the age of 3 years old suffer from the disease”. Leonard has worked with Forthglade to create a dog dental masterclass, packed with valuable tips and advice on doggie dental care. The video and informative blogs can be found at forthglade.com. “Prevention is always better than cure” explains Steve. “There are many aids to preventing dental disease available today. The gold standard, as in humans is tooth brushing, daily. However, healthy diets, dental sticks and mouth washes can each play a role. A regular six-monthly dental check-up with a local vet is also an important way

of keeping things on track”. Forthglade has launched new plant based dental sticks using natural ingredients and developed by vets. They are ideal for supporting strong teeth, helping to remove tartar and plaque, and freshen breath. The grain free sticks include calcium to support strong teeth, peppermint, and eucalyptus to help freshen breath. Available as 170g pack containing 5 sticks RRP £3, or in a box of 20. Suitable for dogs aged 1yr+. Find out more at forthglade.com.

In-spiral-ational! A talented groomer from Bone Idol in Brighton went to Asia to learn Asian Fusion techniques and is incorporating this ‘look’ on some clients’ dogs.

A

client’s Westie gets an inSPIRAL-ational look with his gorgeous new ‘magic leg’ groom. The unique look was dreamed up by dog grooming teacher Helen Kirby, who trains would-be groomers at the Bone Idol Academy in Hove, East Sussex to pass their iPET Network qualifications. Just before the pandemic, Helen, 30 travelled to Malaysia to learn the Asian Fusion grooming style, which includes spiral styles which traditionally covers the dog’s main body. But when gorgeous Ollie the West Highland terrier cross came in for his regular groom, Helen was asked to try something new by his owners, and created a stunning spiral around his right front leg. “This groom is a combination of a few different styles. “I based his groom around his owner’s requests but it’s a combination of a Westie pet trim with the chin taken short like an Asian Fusion groom and an element of creativity with his newly added spiral leg. “When I started grooming I was totally inspired by the Asian Fusion style that I’d seen on Instagram and I made it my goal to be able to groom dogs in that style. It’s something that I’ve worked really hard at.” Said Helen, who appeared as a contestant on the last season of BBC dog grooming competition Pooch Perfect. After the groom Bone Idol posted three year-old Ollie’s new look to Instagram, and users were quick to praise the talented groomer for her creativity. Helen added: “I was very surprised with the positive reactions from other groomers and also pet owners! I feel

like it’s a real love or hate style and I expected some negativity but have had none as of yet! “Hopefully more dog owners will be asking for something a little different occasionally? It is hair that will grow out into a normal shape in no time.” To find out more about Bone Idol and the Bone Idol Academy go to www.boneidol. co.uk Ollie shows off his spirals!

New Fresh from Christies Direct Tina Twist of Happy Dogs in Shropshire trials the products and shares her experiences:

Peppermint Shampoo I love this product. It has a fabulous fresh minty aroma and lathers up really well. It was lovely and foamy while I was rubbing it into the coat and left the coat soft and shiny. I didn’t need a conditioner and will definitely be buying some.

No More Tears Stain Remover I felt that the nozzle was too small to allow the thick liquid to flow easily. Once I had the liquid running, it did soften the debris around the eyes which made it easier to clean those areas but it didn’t remove the stains.

Ear Cleaner This is an excellent product – one of the best I have used. It softened the wax and ear debris quickly and removed it effectively. I used this product on a dog with an ear infection and it cleared it up in just four days – excellent. I will be buying more of this. These products are available from Christies Direct.

Why Not Groom Cats Too? There is a national shortage of cat groomers, which does present both a challenge and an opportunity for the grooming industry.

T

here has never been a better time to add cats to your grooming business offer, in a way which will enhance and expand your business. It’s also important in training to note and respect the differences between dogs and cats. The grooming techniques are not the same. But a skilled groomer can master the art of cat grooming just as they have excelled in the dog grooming profession. At iPET Network we are all about supporting our students and employees to excel and shine in their chosen specialism and profession, finding new and fun ways to grow their business. This is why we are ahead of the curve, and offer the UK’s first ever portfolio of cat grooming qualifications, which allow would-be cat groomers and business expanders to offer a gold standard of service. Sarah Mackay and Fern Gresty codirectors of the iPET Network: Here our cat grooming tutor Katy Gwilt explains more about cat grooming as a career choice.... Cats have a reputation for taking care of their own grooming and disliking water, so why on earth would you want to learn how to groom cats? Well there are lots of great reasons. Many older cats and those with health conditions are no longer able to keep up with their own grooming routine and so need our help to keep their skin and fur in the best possible condition. Long haired cats in particular need year round help to keep their fur knot

22 | www.simplysharp.co.uk

Cats can suffer pain and discomfort when their fur becomes matted or tangled

and mat free as well as tidy around the back end and mane areas (especially if they like to dip it in their water or food bowls!). Cats can come home after an adventure with some strange substances on them like car oil, substances from building sites and bits of twigs and even slugs in their fur which they can’t always deal with themselves or are toxic. This is especially true if a cat has gone away for a few days on an adventure or gotten lost temporarily. There are many dog groomers doing a great job with the dogs in their care, but very few specialist cat groomers in the UK. It is estimated that there are 10.8 million pet cats in the UK, with

26% of households having at least 1 cat so the demand is definitely there. Cats are fascinating animals with completely different behaviour patterns, fur and personalities to dogs so need specialist handling and training. They are by no means small dogs and cannot be treated as such. Many dog grooming salons are now offering cat only days and there is no better time to train than now. The need for cat only groomers is also increasing due to the increase in the number of pet cats and as our understanding of their needs increases. Heidi Anderton looks at how and why owners should be encouraged to assist in keeping their cat’s coat in top condition:

T

o help understand the type of grooming necessary for different breeds we can divide them into six different coat

types: Hairless -Sphynx Short/smooth – Fine hair with little or no undercoat - Domestic, Burmese, Bengal, Egyptian Mau Curly – Waves, Curles or Ringlets Cornish Rex, Devon Rex, Laperm, Selkirk Rex Semi-long haired – Medium length hair on the body sporting longer hair round the neck and rear legs (often called trousers or pantaloons) with varing amounts of undercoat - Domestic, Main coon, Norweigan Forest cat, Birman, Ragdol, Turkish Van Long haired - Long flowing coat all over the body with varying amounts of undercoat – Persian varieties Short and Dense – Perfuse top coat and undercoat - Scottish fold, British Short hair, Russian, Manx, Exotic Shorthair A cat grooms itself using that amazingly rough toungue, from lions and other big cats to domestic cats who live in the comfort of our own homes, they all work the same way. The tiny hooks called papillae are made of Keratin, these hooks give the cat’s tongue that scratchy sandpaper feel and they can penetrate deep through the fur layers and down to the skin pulling out all that dead hair and dander, keeping the coat free from infestations and build ups. This may be true of most short haired varieties of cats, but cats with

24 | www.simplysharp.co.uk

Heidi Anderton

longer and thicker coats will struggle to penetrate the coat and they will need a helping hand from their owner. Other factors which affect a cat not being able to groom itself can range from behavioural choices, to health issues, age and obesity. This is one of the most common factors as the cat is restricted from reaching those necessary areas. They will often try very hard to remove the debris but effectively they push the dead coat further backwards to the hips and base of tail where it accumulates into a build up of knots and mats.... Assisting a cat with grooming stimulates and cleanses the skin and promotes good blood circulation which affects the whole body. The skin is the largest organ in the body and protects the body from elements and organisms and helps to regulate the

body temperature. It is a sensory organ and can heal itself. The skin contains the hair follicles and sebaceous glands, which secretes sebum (oil) into the hair follicles to lubricate the skin and hair. If you look after your cat’s skin and hair they in turn will look after your cat. There are lots of reasons to help cats look after their skin and coat, making the cat much healthier and happier overall. Regular grooming promotes good health by: • Stimulating the skin and promoting good blood circulation • Aerating the coat ensuring healthy growth • Brushing away cast and loose hairs, dander, and grass seeds • Avoiding knots and mats from forming

• Creating a good bonding time – reducing stress for you and your cat • Increases the joy of being handled for your pet • Increasing the chance for a few treats and rewards for your cat • A good time for a health check and to getting to know your cat better • A time to inspect for any parasites in coat, skin, or ears! • Minimising additional vet and grooming fees Some owners will get help from a professional groomer and may bring their cat for a pampurring on a monthly basis, usually for a wet or dry bath and groom through which will keep the coat in tip top condition, in additiion to regular grooming at home. These are very happy cats. Not grooming a cat regularly can cause: • A dull or greasy coat and itchy skin • Knots and matts in the coat which are uncomfortable • Lots of loose hairs and dander in the coat • Grass seeds which can enter the cat’s skin and cause internal damage • Cats can get stressed and aggressive when grooming time comes around if they aren’t used to it • Parasites and fungus can live 26 | www.simplysharp.co.uk

unnoticed in your pet’s coat and ears causing infections, pain, and distress • Increases your vet and grooming fees Heidi Anderton’s salon, Absolutely Animals, specialises in cat grooming, commented: “These cats are often not very happy and may not like to be touched. I always recommend a new regular grooming regime for them once I have managed the initial appointment. Every cat and its owner are different and so individual plans are required. One size doesn’t fit all, and prevention is better than cure, which avoids many problems from arising or escalating. “As a groomer, I see all coat types in the salon. I regularly groom cats who are kept in tip top condition by their dedicated owners, including short/ smooth coats. Unfortunately, I also see many cats who would benefit from much more regular coat attention as I often uncover cuts, grazes, infestations, skin issues, embedded grass seeds, etc which could easily be treated early on or totally avoided with regular grooming. “Coat neglect can affect a cat’s physical health as well as their overall wellbeing, it can cause the undercoat to compact or knot together which affects the ability to control body temperatures and pulls on the skin making it very uncomfortable for the

cat. Many cats who suffer from coat neglect avoid being touched and can become unusually aggressive about it. I often find as I remove build-ups of matting the cats are extremly appreciative and thankful, asking to be stroked with an arched back and a happy tail in the air and many purrs.” All cats will benefit from additional regular coat care. It is part of being a responsible owner and definitely makes a cat very happy, so let’s get cat grooming today. Improving Your Business Heidi Anderton, principal of Absolutely Animals and London School of Pet Grooming shares her top tips for improving your business. Heidi is an experienced industry expert and former member of Groom Team England and is a founder member of the British Isles Grooming Association (BIGA).

T

he world keeps turning and so does the grooming industry. Continually developing and evolving; the grooming shows, the qualifications, new opportunities, new groomers, new customers, updated protocols, improved equipment and techniques, the list goes on! This month I am looking at some essential areas which can directly help you to improve your career and business.

Professional Development No matter how you offer your grooming service one thing is necessary in order for you to provide your customers great value: to make the commitment to continuously learn and study what’s “hot and new” in your field. If you spend an hour or more a day to learn about and research your field, you will instantly start to set yourself apart from your competition. Those hours begin to add up quickly and before you know it, you’ve entered an elite category. I want to take this opportunity to mention this elite category as they are often not mentioned in the positive way they should be. This group spend many hours learning to achieve the knowledge and expert skills they pass on to others, they are often the ones who develop new equipment and techniques, which benefits everybody in the industry - often with no monetary reward. There is a space for everyone 28 | Total Grooming Magazine

On-going tuition ensures you stay at the top of your game

in this industry, so please, respect those that are in an elite category and those that are working towards it, because if you work hard enough, you will end up in that category too.

How to find the right study and learning platform: If you want to develop your business skills, grooming skills or learn a new skill to compliment your business, it is important that you get the right advice and enrol on the right courses to help you reach your goals. To choose the right course, it is important that the teacher possesses the knowledge and skills you want to learn. Courses should be accredited with a recognised provider, such as college or private school. Experts in their field also offer

Heidi Anderton

their own certificates of competence in certain skills which aren’t so popular, such as show grooming specific breeds or cat grooming. Recommendation and online reviews can be a great source of assurance. Your grooming association

Keep updated about new trends and industry-wide training

may also be able to advise you of the right places to go and begin your research for the right course. One of the other most accessible and common platforms for information and learning, currently seems to be Facebook, there are many groups available, local, national and world wide. Pictures, information and networking is abundant here. You will find people who may have already achieved the goals you are looking to reach who may help you or who are also on their pathway to achieving theirs.

High quality products/ services One of the quickest ways to set you apart from the competition is to provide your customers with high-quality products, as closely priced to your competitors as possible. Quality is everything when it comes to growing your business. Take the time to plan, organise and deliver top-notch quality products/services in everything you do. Groomers mostly fall foul of this when they do not charge enough for grooming their client’s dogs. It may seem a good idea at the beginning to undercut your competitors but if you haven’t worked out your business forecast and have not planned for it, essential costs like holidays, tax and pensions, replacing equipment, investing in updating your equipment 30 | Total Grooming Magazine

and learning new techniques, your business will not last and prosper.

Customer value Providing value in the lives of your customers is extremely important when thinking about creating lasting business success. If you are not changing or adding value to your customers’ lives, your business will hit “stall mode” very quickly. The stall mode is when you truly believe you are doing everything right and working extremely hard, but the results and success aren’t present to show for it. Start asking yourself regularly before you take on a new task or release a new product or service, “What is the value for my customers in this product?” If you can’t think of an ample reason as to why your product or service is of value, then chances are you should go back to the drawing board to plan some new ideas. We have recently launched a new service with an Ultrasound toothbrush, the Cleany Teeth. What I love about this service, is that it has great value for all concerned. Value for the client, the dog, my business and my cashflow. It makes great sense adding this service to my business and the fact that we can make a £45 groom into an £85 groom with a teeth clean. A great service for any pet professional.

Great Customer Care I have done a lot of things right and a lot of things wrong over my business career and customer care has sometimes been one of them. Listen, we all make mistakes and some of the best business people fall into this category as well. I see a lot of grooming businesses making this mistake right now and paying more attention to what they think is right rather than to what the customer has to say. If a customer isn’t satisfied or happy, you have to do everything in your power to make that customer happy. Give them what they want. Even if your customer was the one who was wrong, take the initiative to fix things and correct them immediately. Give the customers options and as much information as you can, so they can make well informed decisions. When you wake up each morning asking for more ways to better serve current customers, you will dramatically boost your business and success rate. Always think in terms of Great Customer Care. By implementing these four simple strategies, you can maximise your success rate, increase profit margins and create longevity in a competitive marketplace. Have a great 2022 Heidi Anderton LCGI ICMG www.absolutelyanimals.biz

Itchy dog: Shampoos and Rinses Groomer and herbalist, Jitka Krizova of Vita Canis, shares her natural approach to bathing and grooming dogs who suffer with allergic reactions:

Jitka Krizova

O

ver the last few decades, we’ve seen more and more dogs with allergic dermatitis, food intolerances and immunemediated diseases. We can try to limit the causes to a certain point and we can give the dog prescribed medication, however, this usually only provides short-term relief or improvement. Inevitably it will rear its ugly head again sooner or later.

32 | Total Grooming Magazine

There is, however, one thing dog owners can do at home to help their itchy dog… bath, bath and bath again. I bet in the past you’ve heard that you shouldn’t bath your dog often, perhaps even at all? This was quite common a few years ago, especially with terrier people who believed terriers were not supposed to be bathed at all. Shampoos, in the past, were largely based on

tar and sulphur but they have come a long way since then. Bathing itchy dogs at home or even in a salon is very effective, cheap and the sensible thing to do in order to remove the allergens from the coat and skin. Bathing provides immediate relief and the guideline is to bath your itchy dog at least once a week. The key is to choose your shampoo wisely. Go for a natural shampoo, containing coconut oil, argan oil, charcoal, jojoba oil, neem oil, calendula oil and essential oils like lavender, peppermint and chamomile. Read the label carefully because some shampoos contain natural and/or organic ingredients but can still contain some toxic chemicals. Avoid shampoos with: • added dyes or colourants • artificial fragrances, as they are linked to allergies, headaches etc. • parabens • mineral oils • Sodium laureth sulfate • Stearalkonium chloride Natural, essential oils can soothe and add scent

Make Your Own Shampoo If you’d like to do some DIY you can even make your own shampoo from soap nuts! Soap nuts (sometimes called “soap berries”) are probably the most sustainable cleaning product we can get. What are they? They’re an allnatural, plant-based product (they grow on a tree) they are easy to grow organically and require very little processing or packaging. Soap nuts are naturally hypoallergenic, odourless, highly effective and gentle at the same time. There are countless ideas on how to use them, making them sustainable and versatile. Soap nut fruits actually contain a natural soap called saponin, which is released when they come into contact with water.

34 | Total Grooming Magazine

Here’s how you can make your own shampoo which doubles up as a cleaning product as well! Add a hand full of soap nuts to 3 cups of water and simmer for 30 minutes then let it cool down and strain it. You can then use this liquid to clean your kitchen floors, etc and you can even freeze it! An idea is to make ice cubes and then add them to your bucket of water to wash the floor. If you put the liquid in the blender you get a nice silky, foamy liquid that can be used as a 100% natural shampoo for you and your dog. Just be careful to avoid the eyes as it really stings. As this product is all natural with no preservatives it won’t last long, in fact, only a couple of days in the fridge. I’d recommend making a fresh batch every time you need to bath a dog.

Another way to soothe itchy skin and balance the skin’s pH level, is to make an apple cider vinegar & green tea rinse: ½ cup green tea; cooled down ½ cup apple cider vinegar 1 cup distilled or boiled water cooled down Mix it all up well. Wash the dog as usual and rinse well with plenty of clean water. Apply the pre-made rinse on the dog’s coat and skin, massaging it in well. You can rinse it off or leave it on the coat and it can then work as a bug, fly and flea repellent as well! You can keep the mixture in the fridge, in a closed jar, for about a week or two but if it gets mouldy, don’t use it!

ability to have own label products can provide an opportunity to make more money through retailing your own grooming range. “Groomers can use them in salon and also upsell the personalised dog grooming salon supplies to customers. We have a wide range of wholesale pet grooming supplies perfect for any salon.” With emphasis on natural

ingredients, the range focuses on plantbased formulations with eucalyptus oil to clean ears and oatmeal-based shampoo to soothe skin. “Our expertly developed private label coat care products are perfect to keep a dog’s coat clean, healthy and smelling great,” Simon continues. “Each of our coat care products have been individually trialled for their performance with independent dog

groomers to ensure that our retail ready consumer products are approved by professional users. “As with all of our private label pet grooming and pet care products, our coat care products are packaged to adhere with Amazon’s double seal requirements to ensure that your own branded products can be easily sold on Amazon and other online marketplaces. “Our long lasting dog colognes are suitable for dogs of all ages and breeds and contain aloe vera, vitamin E and Pro-vitamin B5 that can help to boost the shine of a dog’s coat as well as leave a beautiful, long lasting fragrance. Our range of colognes include the dog groomers go-to “Baby Powder” scent and a heavenly “Soft Linen” fragrance that can freshen up any dog. Our team of formulation chemists also developed a natural, hypoallergenic detangling spray for our private label coat care range that makes light work of detangling stubborn knots to drastically reduce brushing time.” Techtron will work in tandem with clients on new lines. Everything is 95 per cent natural and ranges are branded to customer requirements. Simon commented: “Our private label wholesale pet shampoos have been individually trialled with independent dog groomers to ensure that our retail ready consumer products are approved by professional users. “Our team of formulation chemists and laboratory technicians who specialise in developing pet care products have specifically designed our brilliant dog shampoos and dry shampoos to be high performing, economical and natural. “Unlike many other products on the market, all of our wholesale dog shampoos are SLES / SLES free and formulated based on plant derived surfactants with a minimum of 98% natural materials used. Our high performance pet shampoos in this range contain ingredients such as colloidal oatmeal to hydrate skin and zinc ricinoleate which traps and absorbs odour molecules allowing you to substantiate some great marketing claims for your products. 38 | Total Grooming Magazine

“As with all of our private label pet grooming and pet care products, our bathing products are packaged to adhere with Amazon’s double seal requirements to ensure that your own branded products can be easily sold on Amazon and other online marketplaces. “Our bathing range also contains some beautifully fragranced dry wash shampoos which are convenient to

use in-between baths or visits to the groomers. These dry wash shampoos are supplied in an ergonomic foaming bottle to allow for easy application.” Groomers can also come up with their own product suggestions and Techtron technicians will endeavour to formulate appropriate ranges to customer specification. Holistic Grooming Internationally-recognised School, The Holistic Grooming Academy launches ‘The Accredited Holistic Grooming Diploma’ Founder, Stephanie Zikmann explains how this can benefit pet groomers:

U

nco-operative dogs in the groom room can result in feelings of exhaustion and disappointment, at least that’s what I’ve observed over the last few years, and it’s not uncommon to see posts on social media from exasperated groomers pleading for guidance in dealing with the latest “demon dog” to pad through their doors. When we combine these struggles with long, laboursome hours and unrealistic customer expectations, our inexperience as dog handlers and communicators can often lead us down a stressful path if we aren’t careful, leading to total burnout and exposing

40 | www.simplysharp.co.uk

us to higher risk of injury in the groom room. There’s no denying that before the birth of The Holistic Grooming Academy, there was a strong demand for more support in the handling of dog’s with more challenging needs. Sadly, our Level 3 practical courses in Professional Styling just weren’t making the cut when considering how best to approach these dogs and this proved to be one of the leading causes of stress in the industry. While there’s no denying that there has been a recent influx of dogs with behavioural conditions as a result of limited socialisation opportunities

during lockdown, behaviour in the groom room has always been a problem. The reason why we are noticing it more today, I believe, comes down to the advancement of science itself which is heightening our awareness of the emotional advancement of other animal species, and the significance it has in the way we work with them. Concepts like “force-free”, “fear-free” and “holistic” have over the years been understandably ridiculed by many a pet professional because they have either been misunderstood entirely, or taken quite literally. Of course, professional styling is, for the most part, a highly stressful environment and it would

be unrealistic to ever think it could be completely free from stress. Unlike similar sectors such as training and behaviour, grooming requires a great deal of hands-on, physical contact from the get-go, putting an immense amount of pressure on both the handler and the animal, especially when we think about the task involved in grooming which can be invasive and frightening. When I embarked on my certification into canine behaviour and compassionate handling through the International School of Canine Psychology, my eyes were opened to a whole new way of perceiving my role as a groomer, and I often joke about how ignorance really is bliss since many of the things I was originally taught at grooming school, is no longer an option for me now that I know more about the significance of choice and consent. A simple glance back to previous video footage and photos I had taken from within my award-winning salon, would clearly tell a different tale to the captions I had posted. Suddenly, I am more aware of just how important subtle signs are when it comes to building trust and keeping myself and the animal in my care safe. What I quickly realised was that grooming didn’t have to be a battle of wills between groomer and pet, and that through minor shifts in the process, the entire energy of the environment could improve drastically if only I allowed myself time to persevere. After two years dedicated to harnessing my new-found skills in handling and observation, I decided to put all I had learned into my own course with the hope I could help more groomers improve their working environment. The Holistic Grooming Academy was founded in 2020, and the launch of my first course, ‘The Holistic Grooming Diploma’ quickly followed in 2021 after being awarded accreditation status via CPDUK and The Complementary Medical Association. And I didn’t want to provide yet another ‘do it yourself ’ course that anyone could sign up to and complete over a couple of weeks 42 | www.simplysharp.co.uk

either. I envisioned a course that was thorough and advanced enough to challenge groomers to step out of their comfort zone, implement what they were learning as they went and learn to come from a different perspective. As an online, interactive course consisting of ten-units over a tenmonth period, each unit covers several learning concepts and approaches

relevant to the role of a professional holistic groomer. Each unit would require the student to submit a combination of practical and written assessments, marked by one of the Academy’s experienced tutors. Topics covered include: • Canine Psychology & The Canine Perspective

provided to back it up to ensure that information is always accurate and up-todate. Within the first few months of launching, the Academy had already reached maximum capacity of students from all over the world, and we continue to welcome more each day. As the demand for a more holistic approach to pet care in general only grows from strength to strength, we are also very excited to have recently welcomed on board a new experienced cat groomer who will be writing and delivering our forthcoming, Holistic Cat Grooming Enhancer Certificate too. The Holistic Grooming Academy advocates for an updated grooming industry taking into consideration the emotional needs of an animal within the context of a professional grooming environment. While we have been told our approach is somewhat “unorthodox”, our results speak volumes, and we believe that it’s important to at least consider learning more about what we teach so that we can reduce the

stress of our working environments, and help curb the negative association that many professionals and pets have developed over the years. Through our existing affiliations with some of the Pet Sectors most ethical and influential organisations, I am proud to say that we are here to stay and will continue to extend a welcome hand out to any and all pet groomers and guardians looking to advance their toolkit and learn techniques to help pets who struggle with grooming using positive and ethical methods. We are in full support of those who invest in their continual professional development, and actively endorse other training providers who share the same positive and ethical values as us.

Make the Best Splash Debby Knight LCGI of The Bristles Dog Grooming and Training Centre - an Assessment Centre for Summit Training Group – shares her views and experiences of baths and tables and which type she feels is best:

I

n my experience the best baths and tables to buy are Hydro Bath. The positive is they run off a cold water feed and have fabulous water pressure. Using a recirculating pump

46 | Total Grooming Magazine

delivers a high volume mix of water and shampoo. This a quick efficient way of bathing a dog. A riser can be put in the bath to save bending. Negatives are they are not cheap to buy; some models

are expensive to heat , especially the ones with a large water tank on the side, plus if you have three or more groomers in the salon and only one bath you may have to wait for the

water to heat up .

Stainless steel baths Prices vary greatly, depending on the quality of the steel and added extras. Positives: These baths are hard wearing and some have blaster attachments, mesh trays, sliding doors and steps. Negatives: if you don’t like water marks on stainless don’t buy one !!! It still needs both hot and cold water feeds.

Booster Baths Positives: Most are priced under £200 and can come with a ramp, raised up on legs to save bending, lightweight and portable. Negatives: You may be limited to the size of dog you can get in it and due to quite low sides, water can be spread around a large area of the salon. It requires a hot and cold water feed and a shower unit over it at an additional cost . Human / bathroom bath Positives: price obviously either cheap or free. The old cast iron baths are durable and can be mounted on a frame. Negatives: it still needs a shower unit over it, it is large and takes up a lot of room. 48 | Total Grooming Magazine

Top tips Buy the right bath for the correct job. Buy the best you can afford. Buy from a company that provides good customer service, especially if you have a Hydrobath. Keep your bath clean and service regularly if required.

Grooming tables Electric Positives: They are easy to raise up and down smoothly and most go very low to the floor for large dogs to get on and off, saves your back. Negatives: requires electricity so may limit where you place the table as you need a plug.

Hydraulic Positives: No wires, but you can still raise and lower the table, cheaper than the electric ones. Negatives: The cheap tables with a central pedestal are very unsteady

Static Positives: Inexpensive and portable, can come fitted with wheels and used as a trolley to carry grooming kit, ideal for mobile groomer. Negative: no height

adjustment, so the groomer has to bend over. (you can buy an adjustable, portable table , but they can be quite awkward to raise and lower).

Top tips Buy the best you can afford. Check the rubber surface is scratch resistant and removable so it can be changed if worn or damaged in the future. Don’t buy one that is too big for your salon or too heavy to carry if portable. Check the lifting weight to make sure it will take your largest dog. Clean the top between dogs to help reduce cross contamination and lengthen its life Service regularly if it is electric or hydraulic . If it is hydraulic or electric have a wheel kit on it for ease of moving around the salon . My personal choice would be a Hydrobath. I have owned one for 10 years and wouldn’t be without one. My choice of table is electric. I own both hydraulic and electric and over the last 15 years haven’t had problems with either.

Paws for thought... visits Lia Henderson’s salon, Barking Beautiful in Ascot, Berkshire and finds out why every working day is absolutely fabulous Why grooming? How it all came about? Dog’s are my passion in life. Since I was a child I have always loved dogs! I grew up with Labradors, crossbreeds & Greyhounds. I always knew I wanted to work with dogs but never knew it would lead to me becoming a dog groomer and owning my own salon.

How did you start? I got a job as a bather in my local salon and when the groomer left my boss asked if I would like to train as a groomer. So from there I started doing clip offs. (I used to do hairdressing so I picked it up quite easily) Then within a few years I was grooming on my own and loving every second of it. I worked for a few companies and then decided I wanted to be set up on my own. I worked from my parent’s house for two years. ( I can’t thank them enough) I started to build a client base, then thanks to my partner lending me the money to finally open up Barking Beautiful Dog Grooming & 2 years later, I opened my dream shop in Ascot, Berkshire 8 years ago.

What services do you offer? I offer hand stripping, breed cuts, hand scissoring, Asian fusion, creative grooming. But my absolute favourite breeds to groom are Poodles (in poodle trims) & Pomeranians I do so many and love them.

Do you offer any add-ons? I offer small creative bits such as feather extensions, furjazzles etc…. I always add a handmade bow onto the dogs’ collars after grooming. I offer wedding packages, party packages too! I also have a small retail space were 50 | Total Grooming Magazine

Lia Henderson

I sell collars, leads, beds etc… my biggest point of sale is the correct grooming equipment: combs, brushes, shampoos. As my salon is quite large I also hold seminars for local groomers and workshops. This has proven to be very successful and it’s a great way of helping local groomers to expand their skills and knowledge.

What do you feel makes a good groomer turn into a ‘great’ groomer? Learning Learning Learning! I feel that going on seminars, festivals, competitions is a fantastic way to progress from being a good groomer to a great groomer! The amount of little things I’ve learnt over the last few years has been fantastic, but also making friends with local groomers. In my area we all meet up to exchange stories, tips, knowledge which is great as you are always learning something new every day.

I also think you have to make time for yourself and enjoy life don’t burn yourself out. I don’t work weekends anymore as I do agility with my poodles & compete all over with them. I get to see my friends, not miss out on events and have time to myself & freedom. I even on really stressful days dabble in creative make up when I need to detress I get my make up brushes out & paint my face - @liajayne_makeup if you want a nose on instagram. But I really feel this makes a great groomer

having your time, your hobbies.

What is your favourite animal/breed to groom and why? Poodles & Pomeranians! I just love the challenge with Poms they are so naughty cheeky and always looks hilarious when they come in… it’s amazing what a good bath & brush out does transformation wise on them! Poodles I love grooming poodles I have 2 standards myself and love them challenge of a poodle trim I feel you can learn so much with regards to angleations, lines, prep etc….

What has been your biggest business challenge and why? Ooh there are a few, but one that sticks out is building my brand and my name. I’ve worked so hard to produce good grooms and keeping this up and making sure every client is happy is my challenge every day. There are lots of challenges, from clipping a matted dog and watching their coat grow back and putting them into a beautiful clip then seeing their owner happy with the results. That’s the challenge and every day I aim to achieve it with a smile. I love using social media now and am obsessed with Tiktok and Instagram I love making videos and posts for these platforms and my clients and followers love it too! Find me @barkingbeautifuldg

What’s your greatest grooming/business achievement and why? Working hard for years from my parent’s home. Then, opening my Barking Beautiful salon. The day those keys were put in my hand I screamed inside knowing this was my life, my career and the best thing I have ever done. Grooming achievements tend to focus on competing. I go to every comp with a smile and am excited to see all

my friends. Whether I place or not I’m happy with the fact I did the groom and am proud of myself. Also getting my C&G Level 3 was an even bigger achievement for me. I really struggle with exams being dyslexic so this was the biggest high for me in my life I actually have a qualification and I did it all by myself. Getting the award for ‘up and coming groomer of the year’ at Liz Paul awards in 2017! I was very surprised but honoured to receive such amazing award! I was up against a bunch of amazing groomers who all deserved the award too. Being an ambassador for Wow Grooming, Pet Teezer & a huge campaign I’ve just done for Pet Head also. I work alot on set for shoots, TV ads etc…. & absolutely love doing this also being the Groomer on set and looking after the dogs making them look fab for their shots. I’m also on the committee for Groom Team England which is amazing love doing the socials

for that and supporting the team! Esp as the world’s are in Sept this year!

What gives you the most satisfaction? I love working with a dog that’s had a bad experience and gaining their trust and the owner’s face when you have achieved that is amazing. Especially when you can ace the haircut in that session too. Feels great!

What are your aspirations for the future? To keep competing and become the best groomer that I can, keep learning, keep going and loving the career path I have chosen everyday whether it’s a bad day or a good day. We should all work as one, be kind, be helpful and keep on grooming. Visit my successful Instagram & tiktok account - @barkingbeautifuldg Lia Jayne Henderson

The paw-fect partnership Wahl and their ambassador Caroline Donoghue (@LoveMudDogLady) discuss dog grooming and her career so far.

W

ahl UK appointed pet care company Lovemud’s owner Caroline as their ‘Animal Brand Ambassador’ in the UK. Caroline, known as ‘@lovemuddoglady’, has quickly racked up over 123,000 followers on TikTok and 1.4million likes on her quirky viral and educational videos as well as live grooms, watched by people all over the world. Her social media channels continue to grow daily at a rapid rate, with fans tuning in from as far as Australia and the United States. Caroline uses Wahl’s pet grooming products in her educational grooming videos. She talks through the basics of grooming and supplies an abundance of valuable tips that help dog owners brush and care for their dog’s coats, paws, eyes and

more, at home. We caught up with Caroline to delve into who she is, how her newfound fame started and why partnering with Wahl was a no brainer for her.

1. How would you best describe yourself? I’m an ambitious, driven and positive crazy dog lady! I love helping other groomers and owners, I also care 54 | Total Grooming Magazine

greatly for dogs and their welfare.

2. How did you get started as a dog groomer? I was working in FMCG brand marketing for 9 years, and out of the blue I was sadly made redundant. This made me consider what I really wanted to do in life... I’d always wanted to have my own business and had always been a huge animal and dog lover.

I shadowed another mobile groomer for 2 days to see if I liked it. I signed up to City & Guilds courses and put my deposit down on the mobile salon the next day!

3. What part of your job fulfils you the most? Helping dogs. Making them comfortable. Turning it around when you get a dog in the salon who’s petrified but you take your time, understand their triggers, build trust and see the dog getting more comfortable each visit. I also love to help new groomers - we were all new once and I love being someone that they can learn from.

4. Where did your viral social media presence start? I’ve always used Facebook since the business started in 2012. I then started my ‘Lovemud Dog Lady’ account on TikTok in February 2021. A client kept telling me I should be on there, that “dogs are big on there and you’re not shy of a camera!” I researched the app and the algorithm for around a month, and my life, when not grooming, became TikTok! My videos started to get traction last summer, and my first viral video hit over 1 million views in September 2021. Instagram has also now grown, with some individual viral videos hitting over 7 million views!

5. Why do you love using Wahl’s products? I’ve always used them! Since my business started in 2012, I have not been without the WAHL Dirty Beastie shampoo and my WAHL Arcos! Their products are great quality, easy and effective to use, and super reliable! I love that Wahl’s products can be used in the grooming salon but also by dog owners at home, perfect for my 2 social media audiences.

6. What are your go to products? It has always been the fab Dirty Beastie shampoo as it’s a great allrounder! I can use it on all breeds and it is brilliant at getting a clean coat ready for styling. 56 | Total Grooming Magazine

I now also love the Copper Tones shampoo - it smells amazing! The mini Arcos are a godsend for clipping out dogs’ pads, they are a perfect size for small paws. More recently I’m also in love with their colognes, the coconut is my favourite!

7. How would you recommend groomers start their career? Firstly, have a passion for dogs! Look into colleges in your area to get as qualified as possible, the City & Guilds website is a fab place to start. Do as much training, courses & work experience as you can to build a strong foundation. I also cannot stress enough that you should also complete some training/courses in canine behaviour as this will ensure that you better understand the dogs you work with, which in turn will make you a safer groomer. Finally, don’t forget that you need to have customer service skills and business acumen, without these two things you can’t run a successful and sustainable business.

8. What Wahl products would you recommend to dog groomers? All of them! They have such a fab range that should feature in any salon! But my favourites are the Bravura’s, the mini Arcos, Wahl’s bespoke shampoo range tailored to coat types, and the conditioner (which dilutes brilliantly!). The Pet Sheddy brush is also amazing on so many coat types and a godsend at getting hair off clothes and my sofa and carpets at home! You can view the ‘LoveMud’ TikTok channel by searching for ‘lovemuddoglady’ and shop Wahl’s grooming range at www. wahl.co.uk.

Going Mobile…

Winner

Grooming Van of the Year

The Portable Palace Created from our Revolutionary insulated panel, the Palace provides groomers with unrivalled benefits never seen before in the industry! This amazing new concept was born due to our lining's incredible lifespan - they often out live the vans they were placed in - so we created a demountable pod where your business can be moved on to the next chassis easily when needed - or if you no longer wish to be mobile, you can demount the pod and work from your garden!

• • • • • • • •

As the chassis ages, the Palace can be removed and placed onto a brand new chassis - resulting in a much cheaper cost than having to buy a whole new van and conversion with next to no downtime If the chassis is involved in an accident or breaks down you can simply remove the body, place it on the ground and work from your driveway whilst you wait for it to be repaired. The lining will not out live the vehicle like so often seen with used van conversions. You then have to sell the van & conversion and then buy a new van and conversion and wait whilst it is converted. Whereas with the Palace, you can keep the pod forever and change the chassis as you need to. Once you choose to retire from mobile grooming you can remove the Palace, sell the chassis and work from the Palace in your garden instead of having to buy a parlour or convert a room in your house. When you choose to move home, you can take the pod with you and this portability combined with the size means they will not normally require planning permission in your garden. You never need to buy a Brand new chassis that can depreciate - simply buy used a chassis and then swap them out as they get too old. Smaller than its LWB Van equivalent but provides a more workable space inside that is highly customisable as there are no van strutts or vehicle constraints Can be driven on a normal car driving license Say goodbye to having to buy a whole new van and conversion every few years - simply move your Palace from one chassis to another with zero down time and when the time comes and you no longer want to be mobile, simply
