Bruce Casalis Appointed Chair of PIF National Pet College Given Go-Ahead

The National Pet College (NPC) announced today that the Level 3, Animal Welfare Manager apprenticeship has been officially approved for development by the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IFATE). This will be a real boost for the pet industry in terms of staff recruitment and development.

Over the next few months employers and providers will be asked to comment on the knowledge, skills and behaviours that should be included in the apprenticeship standard to ensure that the programme and assessment is fit for purpose.

NPC Education Manager, Vicky Skinner explained: “We are thrilled that this new Level 3 apprenticeship has been approved for development. We presented the case for development to the Institute for Apprenticeships

and Technical Education route panel in mid December and received the approval letter just before Christmas. We will now be gathering feedback from employers and providers on the key duties of management or supervisory roles within the pet sector to ensure that this new apprenticeship is as valuable as

possible.”

Omni Launches Crowdfunding Campaign

The multi-award winning brand, which has seen 30% average month-on-month revenue growth since launching in May 2021 is expecting to hold a very successful campaign on Seedrs, the crowdfund platform. Consumers will be offered an investment opportunity for as little as £11.

Omni sold over half a millions meals in 2022 and enjoys industry leading retention metrics with over 70% of their customer base on subscription plans. It’s viewed by many as a leader in the alt protein pet food space in the UK market. The new campaign will help the brands aggressive expansion plans which include R&D into fibrous plant-based meat products that look just like chicken, beef and lamb as well as expansion into the German market.

Omni has been in the press a lot recently, with their recent growth spurt covered in the Financial Times, Sky News and the Evening Standard. Their founders, a highly regarded veterinary surgeon Dr. Guy Sanelowsky and ex-investment Banker, Shiv Sivakumar, have taken a science backed, health first approach to the business - in which they are proud to work closely with Nottingham Vet School and various reputable experts in the field of veterinary nutrition.

A paper was recently published in a peer reviewed journal, to show that dogs eating the Omni diet for up to a year seemed to experience a variety of health benefits including improved stool consistency and better coat quality. This

follows research coming from the US, that showed dogs on a plant-based diet like Omni, could live up to 18 months longer. The brand also claims that most dogs in their taste test trials chose Omni over various popular meat-based products on the market.

“We know we would never be where we are today were it not for the support and loyalty our community, who love their dogs but want to do better for their health and the planet. Giving them an opportunity to own a share of our business just feels like the right thing to do and the right moment too! At one point, we saw our business

grow 600% in just six months, and we were really pinching ourselves to make sure it was real. By continuing with our vet-led, evidence-based approach and informative marketing campaigns, we’re confident we can improve pet health and remove more farm animals from the food chain” commented Dr. Guy Sandelowsky, Co-founder of Omni.

The investment is expected to open towards the end of January, but consumers who pre register their interest will have early VIP access to get their spot before anyone else. Potential investors can register their interest here.

Sustainability

Big Green Money

Podcast:

Inspired Pet Nutrition Puts Sustainability

at the Forefront of their Business. Pet owners can be more sustainable by reducing their four-legged friends’ meat consumption, rather than going completely vegan.

Will Bushell, Head of Dog Marketing at Inspired Pet Nutrition (IPN), the UK’s largest manufacturer of dog food, was a recent guest on BBC Radio 5’s Big Green Money Podcast. Hosted by Dragon’s Den panellist, Deborah Meaden, the podcast delves into how some of the UK’s biggest companies are operating in today’s market. Bushell shared his expertise on how IPN is placing sustainability at the forefront of its business, as the brand continues to put people, pets, and the planet first.

Meaden wanted to find out what it means to be carbon negative:

Bushell: “Being carbon negative is something we are proud of, and we have been working towards that for a while now. As a result of this focus, IPN is the

1st major pet food manufacturer in the UK to be accredited as Carbon Negative for our operations (Scope 1 & 2). In the last 2 years we have reduced these emissions by 20%, by moving to 100% renewable electricity and improving efficiencies in our factories. We then offset the remainder - and enough for all our employees - through choiceful offsetting initiatives.”

What about ingredients / scope 3?

“We have just started a knowledge transfer partnership (KTP) with Leeds Beckett University where one of their students will come and implant in our business to analyse the carbon footprint of our full supply chain which will allow us to understand our scope 3 emissions more accurately. By looking into each supplier and each ingredient, we will be able to highlight key areas

for improvement and allow us to set a meaningful & measurable target to help us to get to Net Zero for scopes 1, 2 & 3.

In order to allow consumers to make their own informed choices on whether to buy more sustainable food, our plan is to introduce information on pack displaying the carbon emissions of every one of our products.”

Is meat bad? Is cheap meat better?

“It really is more nuanced than that. Sourcing meat ingredients involves using everything from premium cuts of meat to offcuts and offal, but each supplier will have different sustainability credentials and so we have to look at each ingredient in isolation. Most of the meat that we use, regardless of the type or cut, is a by-product of the human food industry, so it has less of an environmental impact than the

NEWS
totalgroomingmagazine.co.uk @totalgroomingmagazineuk @TotalGrooming 8

equivalent meat in the human food industry. There is nothing wrong with it from a quality point of view, it’s just that pets don’t discriminate as much as humans. They love a bit of offal!

As the rise of vegan food continues, the BVA (British Veterinary Association) don’t currently endorse it for pets. Meaden sought to find out IPN’s stance on whether a meat-free diet is really the way to go for your pet.

“While veganism is huge in the human world, for our furry friends, it is not recommended as an everyday staple. Our Barking Heads brand, however, does offer ‘Plant-Powered Pooches’ which is a vegetarian dog food that we recommend feeding your pet once or twice a week as a supplement to their usual meaty diet.

Of course, the welfare of animals that enter the pet food chain is of utmost importance, but IPN mainly uses suppliers from the UK and therefore they have strict guidelines and regulations –meaning that the ingredients are coming from the same farmers and abattoirs as human food. We continue to drive high

standards of welfare through supplier contracts and ethical standards that every supplier must stick to. As a way to do more to broaden their appeal and look to the future IPN aim to produce pet food that contains alternatives to meat along the lines of insect proteins which we are currently researching.”

The pet food pioneer pride themselves on their sustainable packaging, 98% of which is recyclable. Meaden wanted to find out what that actually means for pet owners.

“The majority of Harringtons and Wagg products come in paper bags, this packaging is fully recyclable at home. Bulkbuying pet food inevitably contains plastic packaging as it strong enough to hold the weight, but this is recyclable in large supermarkets and council recycling centres.”

Probiotics

Agrowing movement of pet professionals and experts, who look closely at the ingredients that are in the everyday products that we use, have found an alternative option to chemicals for grooming salons across the UK and beyond.

Probiotics, which are commonly thought of as something you take after a bout of gastric difficulty, have been found to be as effective as bleach at cleaning surfaces and for bathing pets, are not harmful and are better for the environment too.

The use of cleaning chemicals in the name of health and hygiene has grown exponentially since the Second World War; even more so since the COVID-19 pandemic.

But, the reality is, COVID has caused a noticeable rise in pet health issues linked to cleaning chemicals.

Cleaning products that we consider to be safe and beneficial often contain pet poisons that are dangerous for cats and dogs. They create more problems than they solve – for businesses, pets and the planet.

Your salon’s staff could also be at risk too. A study of vets who were suffering from regular migraines found that the chemicals found in flea treatments and other products were to blame.

These products contain volatile organic compounds. Back in 2008, Jane Houlihan from EWG said “This study demonstrating the chemical body burden of dogs and cats is a wake-up call for stronger safety standards from industrial chemical exposures that will protect all members of our families, including our pets.”

The challenge is, harmful chemicals such as ammonia, bleach, hydrogen peroxide, phthalates and formaldehyde are in most cleaning products. Cleaning sprays, wipes, concentrates, soaps, laundry products, hand wash,

disinfectants and air fresheners are often brim full of known toxins.

The same can also be said for the shampoos that we bathe our clients in, as well as the products we use for other aspects of their care with us.

The EWG study found higher levels of cleaning chemical toxins in the blood samples of pets than humans. This is no surprise – their far smaller bodies don’t process toxins as quickly, and their compressed life spans increases their vulnerability. They also live life nearer to the toxin-laden floor and do not have the added protection of clothing.

Worryingly, the only stipulations required by law around shampoos is that they are safe for humans, so there is a huge issue around the products we are using directly on our furry clients too.

The dog’s skin is completely different to that of a human, with a completely different chemical makeup. This means that they are more susceptible to chemicals in this way too.

But, it is not all doom and gloom and there is another way, probiotic cleaning

and pet care is a way that groomers can enhance their environmental credentials, protect staff, and ensure the safety of customers too.

Probiotic cleaning sprays, shampoo and other care products are available, and introducing them into your saloon would certainly be a selling point, which would reinforce your credentials as a responsible business.

Groomers are often the first to spot skin conditions and other complaints, given the close up nature of the work, so ensuring that the tools you use to do this do nothing but benefit the pet only enhances your front line role.

Pets need good hygienic conditions to thrive – on their coat and skin as well as in their living environment. So, microbiome-friendly topical probiotics such as the Provilan range from Ingenious Probiotics have been developed with a focus on health, and the environment.

Topical probiotics for pets reduce external threats including skin allergies and bacterial infections. They optimise

hygiene and remove organic matter that causes unpleasant odours. And they do not contain harmful chemicals, toxins or pollutants.

Bacteria are everywhere, but they are not all bad; in fact, many are essential for good health.

But, an imbalance can allow the ‘bad’ bacteria to take over, causing infections, unpleasant odours and uncomfortable skin conditions for your pet. In contrast, helpful probiotic bacteria safely colonise surfaces and outcompete ‘bad’ bacteria that cause disease. They continue to work for up to three days after application and improve your pet’s symptoms by naturally and safely balancing their microbial environment.

Anna Webb – Nutrition and Behaviour expert has studied at the College of Integrated Veterinary Therapies (CIVT). Anna is host of the award-nominated podcast A Dog’s Life, and a regular BBC contributor.

She said: “In my study with the CIVT, I had a baptism of fire learning that any indoor environment can be up to up to

TREATMENTS totalgroomingmagazine.co.uk @totalgroomingmagazineuk @TotalGrooming 14

100 times more toxic to dogs (and other animals) than being outdoors!

“This is in part due to a dog’s olfactory system which is estimated at over a million times more sensitive than ours. A dog can distinguish the odour of a teaspoon of sugar diluted by three Olympic sized swimming pools.

“Couple this skill with a dogs’ propensity to ‘see’ the world through their ‘nose and mouth sniffing /licking floors, surfaces, bowls and bedding, and their own fur! In this natural behaviour process they’re inadvertently absorbing nanoparticles, including Volatile Organic Compounds from cleaning product’s residues, but directly into their lungs.

These VOC’s are known as ‘endocrine disrupters’ as studies concur that they can cause biological changes at a cellular level, not least impairing a dog’s hormone production that’s associated with diseases like hypothyroidism and cancers. I advise to use the ‘precautionary principle’- when the

effects of a chemical are unknown, minimise any exposure to maximise the health of dogs in your care.

“This is why I am loving the Provilan range from Ingenious Probiotics, quite literally using ‘probiotic therapy’ to optimise good bacteria for a naturally healthy balance of bacteria, rather than aiming for a sterile and unnaturally toxic indoor environment. This principle can be used with oral hygiene by promoting dental health using probiotic therapy for a healthy bacterial spectrum in the mouth, rather than a sterile one.

“Behaviourally dogs compute certain

smells with memory. A classic example is visiting a very ‘clean’ grooming salon, their experience will be correlated to the aroma that’s memorised.

“Arguably using toxic free, natural cleaning and grooming products will enhance an emotional experience too. The range from Ingenious is simply refreshing, pioneering probiotics for the environment, the skin, coat, ears, eyes and dental care too!”

Taylan Bradley

Taylan Bradley is a dog groomer from Melbourne Victoria, Australia. Taylan has been in the industry for about 12 years, starting off as a kennel attended/bather at a boarding kennel, before starting her dog grooming journey nine years ago. She currently works at a salon in Melbourne and loves competing in grooming competitions all over Australia, with a goal to compete overseas.

What can you tell me about your grooming career?

In any career, I think you should set yourself goals and achievements to work towards, and I want to help others to be and stay inspired in our amazing industry. In 2020 I helped start and host a grooming podcast, which has allowed me to chat with some icons of grooming.

I run seminars with a good friend, going all around Australia demonstrating everything from show trims to everyday pet grooms, called “T & Tay on Tour”. I have recently started offering 1on1 and small-group coaching.

Some of my biggest achievements have been winning my first Runner up “Best in Show”, I competed at my 1st overseas competition at SuperZoo 2022 in Las Vegas, competing in the model dog class and the super jackpot, and to my surprise, I got 2nd place with my model dog!

I am also a proud ambassador for Heiniger Australia and ProGroom, an Australian shampoo company.

What key differences have you noticed between groomers in Australia and groomers in the UK?

The UK is on my bucket list to go visit

GROOMERS AROUND THE WORLD
totalgroomingmagazine.co.uk @totalgroomingmagazineuk @TotalGrooming 18

and compete there. I have met some beautiful groomers from the UK and they all share the same love and passion for our industry and strive to make it better.

I would have to say one thing is the names of the oodle breeds. For example, we call a cavie x poodle a cavoodle, in the UK, I believe it’s called a cavapoo. But regardless of their name who doesn’t love an oodle?

What are some key factors that you think UK groomers can learn from groomers in Australia?

I think as a whole industry, we can all learn from each other; we all have something amazing to give to grooming. It’s important to stay relaxed and patient while working but also keep challenging yourself to be better. Support each other where possible, especially beginners, as we have all been there.

Are there any general thoughts you’d like to share with our readers?

If I was to give anyone any advice it would be to always stay inspired. Dream big, believe in yourself and push to be the best version of yourself and anything is possible.

In addition…

Fiona Eldridge, Lead Veterinary Nurse at Buddycare, has been a qualified vet nurse for over 20 years, with experience in veterinary practice, nutrition and laboratories. Today, she’s here to tell us a little about add-ons for your grooming business.

We’re looking at the importance of business add-ons this issue. What can you tell me about the importance of utilising these for your business?

For us, it’s so important to help keep pets healthy and out of the vets but we are only a small part of the massive pet care industry.

We want to support more small businesses in the pet trade and join together to keep all pets healthy!

What can you tell me about Buddycare?

Buddycare is a pet health and wellness start-up founded by vets on a mission to keep pets healthy and happy.

Our pet-care-pros hand-pick products and supplements and pair them with free vet nurse support to promote preventative healthcare and pet wellbeing.

The goal is to inspire more pet parents to take a proactive approach when it comes to pet health through products and education.

Buddycare hopes these services will encourage more pet owners to turn to veterinary professionals for support, instead of unreliable information on the internet, that could put a pet’s health at risk.

Do you have any good examples of business add-ons that our readers should know about?

Our new range of supplements and pet care products are the perfect add-on for any grooming salon, mobile groomer or other pet care business.

Having once been a groomer herself, our lead veterinary nurse Fiona understands the responsibility that comes with the role.

Being up close and personal during

the grooming process can tell you a lot about a pet’s health.

You’ll often be the first to spot ears that are frequently dirty or skin irritation during bathing and blow drying.

You get to know and bond with every pet you meet, sometimes for most of their lives. You learn which ones have bad breath and smelly gas, and you adapt as they age and slow down.

Because of this special relationship, groomers can identify pets that may have joint issues or that suffer from severe anxiety, and address it with pet owners early on.

How does Buddycare fit this?

Buddycare products are available at wholesale prices exclusively for groomers and small businesses to sell as a business add-on.

These add-ons allow you to stand out from competitors by adding fresh

Business savvy

Want to make your grooming

business stand out from the crowd? Here are five business add-ons that might make all the difference!

Consider medical

Last year, we spoke with many dog groomers who offer veterinary services alongside their normal grooming. Having an on-staff vet or someone who has the correct training could seriously provide some bolt-on services, especially when they’re trained to look for signs that could lead to another visit from your clientele!

Smells good

Why not add a touch of fragrance to your groom? Christies Direct has a perfect example of a website that stocks perfumes and other nice smells to add to your groom. Nobody wants a badsmelling puppy after all, especially after a fresh groom! Consider stocking some of these scents yourself and you may find that clients will be asking for a little spritz to top off their visits, for their canine friends of course!

Personalisation

Make it personal. If you’re the type of groomer who likes to polish off a fresh trim with a bow, why not add a personal touch so that Lucky never forgets his name again? Adding personalisation to products could really turn into a unique selling point and even attract more clients. This could also be a prime branding position for your own business, especially at the dog parks.

Packages

Do your clients often talk about wanting to enter their furry friends into some local shows? Yes? Then why aren’t you offering specific show packages to them?

Not only will your clients have a fantastic excuse to come and see you on a regular basis, but they’ll also have people asking about where they got their dog groomed. Word of mouth runs

strong at shows and events, so be sure to capitalise!

Return clientele

Something a little less frequent that we see is people offering bonuses and packers for return clientele. This isn’t

necessarily an add-on perse, but it can be something that you can include within your business model. Why not give a little bit of a discount for every fifth visit from a client? It never hurts to try out these sorts of return deals and see how your clientele responds.

BUSINESS ADD-ONS - ESSENTIAL FIVE

Let’s talk about insurance…

An important part of running any business is having the right insurance cover in place, and that’s no different when it comes to pet grooming businesses.

However, insurance can be a complex topic that many business owners find tricky to navigate. Not all business insurance is the same, and it can be a challenge to compare policies and find the best cover options to really suit and protect your pet business.

Petcover Group’s Lorraine Nash has teamed up with Dr Sophie Bell to start delving into the topic of business insurance for pet professionals, particularly from a groomer’s perspective. Over coming months, Lorraine and Sophie will gather and discuss an array of insurance-related questions relevant to the grooming industry.

Where’z Wally Dog Grooming & Day Care Ltd

Sam Dove and Rebecca Mullally are the owners of Where’z Wally Dog Grooming & Day Care Ltd. We spoke with them to find out a little about their business.

The pair are the proud owners of Where’z Wally Dog Grooming & Day Care Ltd. Sam started with a salon in her garden and Rebecca had a mobile grooming van.

In a nutshell, or maybe a dog biscuit, it all stems from early childhood. For the ultimate tail of women joining forces you need look no further than the story of Where’z Wally.

Rebecca and Sam met at Woodend School, aged four, and lived a fiveminute walk from each other’s homes. Their parents were friends, so evenings and weekends were spent in each other’s residences. As they grew up, they kept in touch and, over the following years, both women had jobs and started their own families.

In 2016, Sam’s dad, Wally, died suddenly. This devastating event fuelled her motivation to change her own path and work for herself. With a shared family love of dogs, Sam decided that grooming was the way forward and enrolled at college to start her journey. The salon she established is honoured with her father’s name and together with her husband, Graham, she set about designing and establishing the perfect studio for her back garden.

Incredibly, Rebecca had started working at a doggy day care centre in Sutton Coldfield, which had fuelled her passion for all things animals, and she trained as a dog groomer too. Later, the opportunity arose to leave her employment and go it alone in a mobile dog grooming van.

Fast forward a few years and over a catch-up chat, the pair realised what the

GROOMERS OF THE MONTH
totalgroomingmagazine.co.uk @totalgroomingmagazineuk @TotalGrooming 32

other had been doing and what was evident was that they were both working long hours. And so, began the plan to combine their skills and businesses into a fabulous one-stop provider for all things dogs. Over tea and sometimes wine, the ideas flowed.

The new unit in Wilnecote, Tamworth provided the perfect solution, with ample space for the grooming side of the business, while allowing a further area to be developed into a doggy day care facility in the future.

They offer grooming for any dog regardless of breed, size or temperament. This has helped them reach a wider client base and has grown their reputation.

They started out December 2021 with just Sam, Rebecca and their apprentice Lianne. As they got busier, they welcomed another apprentice Kadence as well as a part-time junior stylist, Sian. They hope to have the Doggy Day Care ready to open in March 2023 and the big plan is to purchase their own land to develop it for a one stop shop for all your dogs’ needs.

The advice that they would give is to get trained by a recognised body like City & Guilds, ICMG, iPet or OCN, because it’s quite a specific skill that takes time to develop. Always continue to learn and develop your skills. Every day is a school day. Taking the time to train professionally means your clients know they can trust you with their dogs.

Dog grooming isn’t all hearts and flowers and can be quite demanding on not only your body but mentally as well.

“We honestly didn’t realise how hard it was starting out, designing and creating our salon. Battling with the council for change of use so that we could open the premises. Making sure we had enough bookings to over our overheads. Then another battle again with the council to get approval for the doggy day care, running the business, training staff, but we are very excited for our future.” Finished the pair.

You can find them on Facebook by searching Where’z Wally Dog Grooming, on Instagram at @wherezwallydoggrooming and www.wherezwallydoggrooming.co.uk. You can also e-mail them at info@wherezwallydoggrooming.co.uk.

Canine first aid

It’s a great year so far and, as I write this, I am packing to head off to India, where I will be teaching canine first aid. More on that in my next column!

This week I also helped to spread the word about the importance of first aid training, by appearing on Anna Webb’s A Dog’s Life podcast.

It was great fun to be interviewed for the programme, but also plenty of important information to share about how we can all keep our pets safe, and our clients’ pets safe in the case of the grooming industry.

March is Dog Dental Month, an awareness month which shines a light on all the things that we can do to keep the dogs’ teeth healthy and clean.

The event is spearheaded by dog supplements brand Pawable, which launched its Collar-Gen powder this year, which is great for ensuring the longevity of teeth and bones.

Looking after your dog’s teeth at home can also save money on trips to

the vets later down the line and save you and your pet a lot of pain and heartache.

Simple things like you can do include introducing good quality non-rawhide chewing treats, cleaning your pet’s teeth with a brush regularly, or investing in good quality ultrasonic cleaning once a year from a trained professional.

Make sure that the ultrasonic teeth cleaning professional is responsible and not providing dental procedures, maintenance only cleaning. Always contact your vet for dental procedures that require a deeper clean and teeth extractions.

Changing your dog’s diet to more natural products is also a great way to keep their teeth healthy, as too many grains or binding agents stick to the teeth and can cause decay.

So in honour of Dog Dental Month, here are my top tips for groomers who

may come across a mouth emergency, and what you can do to quickly and safely react.

1. What to do if a dog licks the grooming scissors (cuts to the mouth and gums):

Accidents do happen, and we all know those ‘tongue dogs’ who love to loll their tongues out, and lick anything that they can see.

So what happens if when you are grooming your client accidentally licks the scissors and cuts their mouth?

Well here’s what you need to do...

First, always keep ice cubes handy. And if this happens simply grab an ice cube, put it in the dog’s mouth. Put a towel over the dog’s head to help them relax and get them to a vet quickly.

Putting ice on the cut straight away

helps to stem the bleeding, which gives you time to seek professional assistance from the vet.

2. What to do if a dog breaks a tooth:

A broken tooth is not a life-threatening emergency, but it’s important that you know what to do if you spot a dog that has a freshly chipped gnasher.

A broken tooth could cause sores in the dog’s mouth or an exposed nerve could cause pain or discomfort, so it is important to get a broken tooth checked out as soon as possible.

To help a dog you think is experiencing tooth pain, there are a range of numbing sprays and mouthwashes that help in the short term. But the only real solution is to address the underlying cause of the dental problem.

3. What to do if a dog’s tooth falls out:

If a dog has an accident and knocks out a tooth, try and find the lost tooth.

To care for a distressed dog, place a towel over their head, and keep calm. Then take the dog to the vet. If you have been able to retain the tooth is it

possible that it will be able to be put back in place.

It’s show time!

Time to dust off your best uniforms, bring out your best equipment and prepare yourselves for 2023’s long line of upcoming shows!

As we can see, 2023 has taken off to an amazing start! Now, it’s time to really get into the thick of it and start preparing for all of the fabulous shows that will be making their way to venues all across the UK.

If you’re considering taking part in a show this year there are plenty of online guides and fantastic tutorials that you can view to help you get started. There is so much to brush up on (no pun intended), that you’re going to want to be keeping a solid eye on so that you don’t lose track.

It’s important to do your research, find your strengths as a groomer, invest in the best tools for the job and ultimately show up on the day ready to really show the grooming world what you’re capable of.

The grooming industry is a friendly one and, overall, we want to emphasise the importance of friendly competition.

Before the show, reach out to other groomers. Share tips over a coffee, talk about previous experiences and see if there are any big steps that you might be missing to make your groom stand out from the crowd. “Sharing is caring” doesn’t just apply to chocolate bars on the playground after all!

We are a community, and want to reiterate that this could be seen as a learning opportunity, a method of growing both as a groomer and as someone who wants to be a cornerstone in the industry.

That being said, there are a large handful of events to take a look at all across the UK, so don’t fret if you’re worried about being able to travel to one.

Some notable shows include:

• GroomFest and GroomFest South

• Crufts

• The South East Grooming Show

• The British Creative Dog Grooming Championship

• Style to Rescue

• Mastergroom • Supergroom • Premiergroom And more! Over the

Crufts

Tickets for Crufts 2023, the world’s greatest dog show, have been released. Run by The Kennel Club, Crufts is inviting thousands of visitors to join in a celebration of everything dog, from the 9 –12 March 2023 at the NEC Birmingham.

Crufts takes place over fourdays, with over 20,000 dogs and 130,000 people expected to attend and celebrate each dog having its day, cumulating on Sunday, when the prestigious Best in Show title is awarded, which last year saw an additional 2.4 million TV viewers tune in to watch the exciting finale.

Each day will conclude with a new Group Winner earning their place in the Best in Show final on Sunday evening, beginning with the Gundog group on Thursday 9 March, Working and Pastoral groups on Friday 10 March, Terrier and Hound groups on Saturday 11 March and Utility and Toy groups on Sunday 12 March.

Just prior to the Best in Show final, the Resorts World Arena will welcome five very special canine companions and their owners, who have made it as finalists in The Kennel Club Hero Dog Award 2023. Results from the nationwide public vote

will reveal which pair have been crowned the winner.

Elsewhere, in a monumental year for The Kennel Club, with 2023 marking its 150th anniversary, Crufts is honouring the celebration with a special Kennel Club

150th Anniversary Celebration Stakes, taking place on Thursday. The one-off class will see all Best in Show winners from 2022 all breed Championship Dog shows invited to take part, including 2022 Crufts Best in Show winner, Baxer.

The action-packed four days will also see a diverse range of 222 pedigree breeds, rescue dogs and crossbreeds from all walks of life competing in different categories, across different levels and disciplines, such as agility, Heelwork to Music, Flyball and Obedience. The family-favourite Scruffts final will return on Saturday and see crossbreeds, who earned their place in nationwide heats throughout the year, compete for first place.

For the canine curious, the popular Discover Dogs area returns, showcasing over 200 different pedigree breeds, allowing prospective dog-owners to meet and greet the different breeds and speak to experts on what it means to take on a canine companion. Kennel Club Breed Rescue organisations will also be available to educate visitors on their work in rehoming and helping every dog find their forever home.

The 25 acres and five halls of the NEC are packed with over 350 stalls to meet any owner’s doggy shopping needs and treat your furry friend, and stands will represent both the large and lesser-known organisations and charities working with dogs. Specialist displays from Medical Detection Dogs and the West Midlands Police Dogs will also be taking place in the arena throughout the four days.

The Kennel Club will be offering visitors the opportunity to learn more about getting started in activities, such as the Young Kennel Club for 6-24 year-olds, and the Good Citizen Dog Training scheme. Experts will be available to speak on the work being done to improve canine health and welfare, including information on the funding of research by The Kennel Club Charitable Trust.

Vanessa McAlpine, Events Executive at The Kennel Club, which organises Crufts, said: “We are so excited Crufts is coming around again! This year is particularly special for The Kennel Club as we celebrate our 150th anniversary and we are delighted to be commemorating this historical year with a special Kennel Club 150th Anniversary Celebration Stakes.

“We are also welcoming back the full Crufts programme from before the pandemic, with the return of the Junior Warrant final and The Joe Cartledge Memorial International Junior Handling competition.

“The four-days are always actionpacked and the energy keeps building in the anticipation of the Sunday evening where The Kennel Club Hero Dog Award winner is announced and the prestigious Best in Show trophy is awarded. It truly is the greatest celebration of dogs.”

More information and tickets for the event are available on the Crufts website at crufts.org.uk/tickets. All ticket prices remain unchanged from the 2022 show. Please note that tickets are only available through the official ticketing partner Ticket Factory.

Clawing away!

Cats and their claws are something I get asked about a lot in my line of work and for groomers it is a very important subject to know lots about.

Customers often want to know how they can safely maintain their cat’s claws at home, and it is also important for us groomers to have a good working knowledge of all things cat.

The iPET Network’s portfolio of qualifications in cat grooming, which I teach, are the best place to get the skills that you need to become a cat groomer or add cat grooming to your businesses’ existing offer.

Below is my ‘need to know guide’ to claws on cats, which I hope that you will find useful.

Cat Claw Structure

The majority of cats have 18 claws total (polydactyl have one or more extra paw pads so extra claws as well), ten on their front paws and eight on the back.

The front paws have five on each to include the dew claw which is a bit higher up like where a human thumb would be.

Claws are made of keratin much like human nails and again like human nails they keep growing their entire life.

Claws grow like the layers of an onion or the rings of a tree. In the centre is the new claw and around it the sheath gets thicker and dies off.

When you find that weird hollow looking claw and wonder where it came from, this is the dead outer husk of the claw that gets shed much like the skin of a snake so don’t worry that the cat has pulled their claw out.

etc, scratching is also part of natural cat behaviour and part of how cats communicate.

Felines have scent glands on their paw pads so scratching also leaves behind their smell, helping to tell other cats about who they are and their status.

There are also the physical marks left by scratching, and combined they can tell other cats how recently they were in an area, what their mating status is and their general health too.

Trimming Cats Claws

Cats’ claws keep growing and healthy claws will constantly be shedding that dead outer layer/husk.

What

do Cats use their Claws for?

As well as the obvious uses like hunting, climbing, defending themselves

Indoor cats, and those that are older or sick, don’t get as much exercise so have less of a chance to work their claws on hard surfaces so they can need a little

FELINE FOCUS
totalgroomingmagazine.co.uk @totalgroomingmagazineuk @TotalGrooming 42

help to keep their claws in tip top shape.

Claws on cats like this can get overly long, and start to get caught in plush furniture and carpets as well as the skin on humans (usually the legs) when they are kneading and settling down for a snooze.

Giving the claws a trim can help prevent them from getting stuck and having that little panic attack when they do!

Before you trim a cat’s claws, watch out for the pink quick that grows in the centre of the claw.

If you cut this it is too short and it will bleed.

It won’t cause any damage as such but can be messy and feel a bit like a stubbed toe... Ouch!

Ingrown and Thick Claws

The other problem to look out for is if cats aren’t properly scratching and exercising their claws then that dead outer husk keeps building up and the claw gets thicker and thicker.

These can then start to curl around and grow back into the cat’s paw pad as an ingrown claw.

Ingrown claws look like a strange thick circle of hard claw that pierces the cat’s paw pad and can cause a lot of pain.

Every step the cat takes pushes overly long claws into the paw pads or deeper

into the pad itself.

It can cause infections as well, where the claw pierces the pad allowing pathogens and dirt to get inside the broken skin.

It’s important to check at cats’ claws as they age and slow down to make sure that this isn’t happening and it can occur

on both the front and back paws.

You may notice that your cat’s claws are getting thicker as the keratin is building up.

GroomFest South

What can you tell me about GroomFest South?

Following the success of GroomFest over the last few years, we have decided to do a smaller, more regional show to cater for all areas of the country and to cut down travel that some visitors may not wish to do.

As we are based in Kent, and we have had a lot of requests for a South show, we decided to look at the South of England first and settled on the South of England Showground, with other areas of the country potentially in the pipeline.

What can groomers expect from this year’s event?

GroomFest South does not differ too much from our usual GroomFest, apart from the fact it’s a slightly smaller scale, but just as good! It will still be a shopping and education event with seminars and demos going on throughout the show.

What are you most excited for at this year’s GroomFest South?

We are excited to see how the event works in a different venue with hopefully different faces and visitors coming to the event. The majority of events seem to be held in the in the Birmingham/ Coventry area, so this will be nice to see something different.

How does GroomFest South differ from other grooming events?

GroomFest South is different to other events as entry, seminars and demos are free of charge. You can come to the event, have a browse around and go home with hopefully learned something and also grabbed some bargains from our stands.

Most grooming shows have grooming competitions running through the show, but we decided not to go down this route and keep it to shopping and education. Usually we have over 65 stands at our normal GroomFest and, for

this event, we will have over 40. Slightly smaller but hopefully just a fun!

Where can people go to get more information on GroomFest South?

There is more information on our website www.groomfest.co.uk. This has details, dates and info on the event venue, including contact details for myself if you might be interested in attending or possibly having a stand.

Any general thoughts you’d like to share?

We are looking forward to hopefully seeing as many of you at either of our shows. Please put the date in your diary16th April for GroomFest South and 17th September for the main GroomFest. We are working towards other events and, if you would like to suggest an area or would like to see something in particular, then please e-mail me at mike@tgmpublishing.co.uk. Follow @groomfestuk on Instagram, and find us on Facebook.
