Reducing Risk of Rabies

Southeast Asia’s largest dog and cat charity, Soi Dog Foundation has reduced the risk of rabies in Phuket to almost zero - with only one confirmed case of human rabies in the past 18 years.

Following recent news of the death of a British tourist from rabies in Morocco which captured global interest, Soi Dog’s successful CNVR (Catch, Neuter, Vaccinate, Return) programme not only offers a positive step in the issue of humane animal population management and welfare, but acts as reassurance for the millions of tourists from around the world who visit Thailand every year.

Dr. Tuntikorn Rungpatana Soi Dog’s CNVR Director shared, “Rabies is a fatal but 100% preventable disease which, if eradicated in the dog population, will be eradicated in the human population. With dogs being the reservoir species in Asia, they must be the primary target. CNVR not only vaccinates dogs but, through sterilisation, stabilises the dog population and allows us to reach and vaccinate more dogs which prevents the transmission of rabies.”

The biggest programme of its kind in the world, it has spayed, neutered and vaccinated over 89,000 dogs in Phuket since 2003. It has also sterilised over 1.4 million animals across Thailand, including over 600,000 in the Greater Bangkok area - stemming the risk of deadly diseases for residents and tourists alike.

Averaging over 22,000 stray dogs and cats sterilised across Thailand every month, the charity continues to pioneer animal management in the region. Since 2016, it has partnered with the UK’s oldest dog charity, Dogs Trust – who fund 50% of the Bangkok mobile CNVR programme.

Soi Dog Foundation is also part of the country’s Thai Princess’ ‘Rabies Free Animals, Rabies Free People’ project established in 2016, with the goal of eradicating rabies by 2030. It is the only NGO in Thailand that is actively involved in the project, along with government

agencies and universities.

Dr. Tuntikorn Rungpatana Soi Dog’s CNVR Director continues; “Thanks to the momentum of our CNVR programme, we’ve made a real impact across Thailand. Our CNVR Programme benefits both animals and people and we hope it offers an example to other countries seeking solutions for humane animal population management, particularly those with a thriving tourism market like Thailand and Phuket.”

Established in 2003 by British couple John and Gill Dalley, and Margot Homburg Park in Phuket, Thailand, Soi Dog Foundation has grown to become Southeast Asia’s largest organisation dedicated to improving the welfare of

stray dogs and cats.

Soi Dog Foundation also operates from The Gill Dalley Sanctuary in Phuket, spanning 12 acres and housing over 1,800 dogs and cats, providing them with the physical and emotional rehabilitation they need before adoption. The sanctuary is visited by dog and cat lovers from around the world, who come to volunteer while on vacation.

The foundation’s international adoption programme has helped thousands of rescued dogs and cats find loving forever homes around the world, while local adoption initiatives support animals finding homes within Thailand.

The Cornish Dog Barber

This month, we put the Cornish Dog Barber in the spotlight as they discuss their mission to help every dog feel confident, comfortable, and cared for while helping groomers learn and grow together.

Please introduce us to The Cornish Dog Barber and what it strives to achieve in the industry.

The Cornish Dog Barber is a calm, relaxed, and professional grooming salon based in the beautiful surroundings of Cornwall. We’re not just a salon— we’re a safe and welcoming space where dogs are treated with care and respect, and where high grooming standards and welfare come first.

As a small, skilled team, our mission is simple: to help every dog feel confident, comfortable, and cared for. From puppies to seniors, nervous rescues to regulars, we aim to deliver consistent, compassionate grooming that puts the

dog’s wellbeing at the centre of every visit.

Please discuss your journey in becoming a dog groomer.

I’ve always had a deep love for animals. I started volunteering in rescues at a young age, and later went on to compete in dog sports and show my own dogs. That’s really where the grooming spark began—my passion for correct presentation and bringing out the best in each dog.

My path into grooming was built through work-based training. I worked in large chain salons and independent businesses, gaining hands-on experience

before opening The Cornish Dog Barber. What I wanted was a place where exceptional grooming and excellent dog welfare could work hand in hand— somewhere professional, consistent, and kind.

I also knew I wanted to create a workplace where groomers could learn and grow together. That’s what we’re building every day in the salon.

In a busy industry, what would you say is your unique selling point?

Clients often describe us as calm, professional, and reliable. That’s something we’re proud of and work hard to maintain. Whether it’s the way we

handle dogs, the products we use, or the trust we build with our clients—our team takes real pride in doing things properly.

It’s not all about flashy finishes or quick turnarounds—it’s about clear communication, strong handling skills, and building long-term relationships with both dogs and owners.

Do you have any hidden gems of knowledge you’d like to share with our readers?

Know your worth. Set your boundaries and run your business in a way that feels right for you. You’re providing a professional, essential service—don’t undervalue it.

And just as important: support your fellow local groomers. I’m lucky to have a fantastic network of local professionals I can call friends, and we help each other out regularly. There’s no competition— only community. Share your knowledge, ask questions, lend a hand. It makes all the difference.

What advice would you give to other groomers starting out in the industry?

Set your goals, then go out and smash them—but be clear and consistent with your clients. Communication is everything. We’re the professionals, and people rely on us not just to groom their dogs, but to guide them too. No question is a silly one, and educating owners is part of what makes a groomer truly valuable.

For those still training: learn dog behaviour and handling first. You can have perfect scissor skills, but if you can’t read or manage the dog in front of you, the groom will fall apart. Beautiful work comes with time—but trust and handling are everything. Also, don’t underestimate how much customer service matters. Most owners just want their dog to be happy, safe, and well looked after.

Do you have any final thoughts you’d like to share?

We’re part of an industry that’s growing—and for good reason. More owners are realising that regular grooming is about far more than looks. It’s health care. It’s behaviour support. It’s a fundamental part of a dog’s life.

If you offer a good service, and you truly care, people will come. Grooming is a craft, and it deserves the same respect as any other professional service.

What are your hopes for the future of The Cornish Dog Barber?

My goal is to keep investing—in myself,

in my team, and in the salon. Whether that’s through new training, equipment, or developing our services, I want to make sure we’re always improving and offering the very best for our customers.

The Cornish Dog Barber has already come so far, and I’m incredibly proud of the community we’re building. The future’s bright—and full of dogs!

Mobile Grooming

Diversifying Revenue Streams

As an established salon owner, adding a mobile grooming unit can be a powerful way to diversify income, reach new clients, and future-proof a business. We share five key considerations for those thinking of expanding into mobile grooming.

Broaden your Horizon

A well-planned mobile service doesn’t just pull your existing clients away from your shop, it taps into a different segment entirely. Many mobile clients prioritise convenience, have anxious or elderly dogs who may struggle in new environments, or live in inaccessible parts of town. By targeting busy professionals, elderly pet owners, or rural communities, you can grow your customer base wider, rather than simply shifting business between the two streams.

Keep it Flexible

Offering both salon and mobile grooming under the same brand builds trust and positions you as a well-rounded expert. Providing clients with the option of in-salon or mobile enables them to pick what works best for them season by season, or even appointment by appointment. A branded van on the road also acts as a moving billboard, raising awareness for both services simultaneously.

Optimising Staff

With multiple locations, you can choose to train existing staff to rotate days on the mobile unit or hire specifically for mobile work. Some employees will thrive in one-on-one appointments and direct client interaction, while others prefer the team environment of a salon. Matching personality and skill set to the right environment ensures quality service across both outlets.

Streamline Operations

When considering the addition of a mobile van, efficiency becomes integral to profitability. Invest in software that integrates salon and mobile bookings, sends automated reminders, and helps

to plan routes to minimise drive time and fuel costs. A unified system makes managing two revenue streams far simpler and helps to avoid overbooking or clashes.

Safeguard Business

Economic downturns or unforeseen events (such as covid) highlight the

importance of being adaptable. Mobile grooming can continue even when retail businesses face potential restrictions. It can also provide a safe, contactminimised option that appeals to healthconscious clients. By diversifying into mobile grooming, you build resilience into your business model.

On the Move

As part of our main mobile grooming feature, we explore why it is a game changer for sensitive dogs and how changing the grooming environment can become a more enjoyable experience for all.

Grooming can be a nervewracking experience for some dogs, with the unfamiliar sights, smells, and sounds of a busy salon often becoming a little too much, triggering stress and anxiety in some dogs. Anxiety in dogs is not only common but also one of the leading factors in influencing how well a grooming session goes. For these more sensitive clients, traditional grooming environments can often exacerbate stress, and this is where mobile grooming, considered a more peaceful alternative, can be introduced to meet dogs on their terms.

One of the primary benefits of mobile grooming for more anxious dogs is the absence of sensory overload. Traditional salons often involve new smells, strangers, travel, and waiting rooms, all of which can be overwhelming, especially for those who associate

“The dog settles faster because only grooming-related sounds and smells are present, not those from other animals.”

travelling with vet visits! In contrast to this, mobile grooming vans offer a quiet, self-contained environment with minimal distractions, all while the dog stays within their comfort zone, right outside their house! The dog settles faster because only grooming-related sounds and smells are present, not those from other animals.

Looking at it from a behavioural standpoint, one-on-one mobile grooming means groomers are focusing on one dog at a time, with the undivided

attention giving rise to a quieter, calmer experience. Dogs with anxiety often thrive on routine and familiarity; booking with the same mobile groomer regularly enables dogs to build trust. Building trust also leads to calmer responses towards the single groomer that the dog comes to recognise, without the unpredictability of a busy salon.

Continuing with behaviour, many anxious dogs also struggle being separated from their owners, especially in environments they’re not familiar with.

Understandably, every salon is different, but with the traditional salon involving drop-offs and being left in an unknown environment, this can often be a major trigger. Mobile grooming addresses this directly by allowing owners to stay close by, outside their home, offering a comforting presence.

For established groomers, branching into mobile grooming doesn’t have to mean leaving the grooming salon behind. Instead, it can help to complement your existing business and expand current service offerings. If offering mobile grooming has cropped up on your radar before, consider leasing or renting a converted mobile grooming vehicle to test the local market without overcommitting. Consider offering mobile grooming on your salon’s quieter days, weekends, or for appointment only when required for certain dogs. The amalgamation of the two allows you to retain your current salon clients you’ve worked tirelessly to gather while catering to the more anxious canine, senior pets, or simply clients who value convenience.

An additional benefit of mobile grooming is a reduced grooming time, where sessions are usually quicker for the specific dog. For anxious dogs, the

“Consider marketing your mobile services as anxiety-friendly or low stress to attract a segment of dog owners.”

less time they spend under stress, the better, meaning they benefit from shorter sessions, causing them to be less likely to associate grooming with a negative experience. Mobile groomers also have the ability to pace and tailor the session according to the dog’s comfort level. If a dog is showing signs of distress, you can adapt your approach, techniques used, and apparatus used without worrying about disrupting salon flow.

As awareness of canine anxiety has grown post-pandemic, with more dogs showing signs of separation stress, demand for mobile services is growing. Consider marketing your mobile services as anxiety-friendly or low stress to attract a segment of dog owners actively seeking that level of care. By specialising in mobile services, groomers can position themselves as compassionate

experts, often earning long-term loyalty from grateful clients.

Now, of course, we’ve focused on mobile grooming here, but it’s important not to overlook the strengths of a traditional salon setup. In-salon grooming is often better equipped for high volumes of traffic, has more space for advanced grooming equipment, and has multi-groomer collaboration, which can be vital for handling larger breeds, complex cuts, or just that good old team camaraderie!

Both models serve important roles in the grooming industry, and many groomers may find that offering a combination of in-salon and mobile services allows them to meet the needs of a wider range of pooches.

GroomFest

With GroomFest just around the corner, we hear from some of the wonderful people who help make it happen. Let’s explore some of thing’s we’re excited for at this year’s show…

Mike Smith – Event Director

For 2025 we have made a few changes to the event and we are trying a two day show this year with a twist. Sunday 7th September is the usual great GroomFest with a full day of Shopping and Education. Then on Monday 8th September we are trying something new with GroomFest Education day, this will see over 50 breed specialists come in and help visitors with tips and tricks and techniques etc.

I love everything about GroomFest but as the organiser I love to walk around the event in full swing and see all our lovely trade stands busy and enjoying the event. The visitors and trade stands make the event what it is.

I am looking forward to seeing everyone at the event and will have my fingers crossed for another successful year.

Pata.Pet

We’re incredibly excited for Team Pata’s first visit to GroomFest! It’s such a privilege to sponsor an event which champions all the pet groomers who put so much heart into what they do.

GroomFest 2025 will be an amazing chance for us to meet and learn from passionate pet care professionals. Pata has deep connections with the grooming industry, so we really value the opportunity to hear people’s experiences and discuss how we can shape our booking platform to be the best tool for them.

We obviously can’t wait to hand out treats to some new furry friends, but we’re most looking forward to the seminars with industry experts, like Sally Hart’s talk on burnout. The more we can immerse ourselves into the world of groomers, the better we can support them in following their dreams — so thank you for allowing Team Pata to be a part of GroomFest.

Simpsons Grooming Supplies

We’re especially excited about the new Monday event, which adds an extra layer of opportunity for meaningful engagement.. It’s a brilliant initiative that’s set to expand the show’s reach and attract fresh faces — from newcomers to seasoned professionals looking to stay ahead. We see it as a valuable step in making GroomFest even more inclusive and accessible.

Unlike larger trade events like Crufts, GroomFest offers a more intimate and focused experience. The atmosphere is welcoming, relaxed, and truly built around groomers. It’s a space where people can network, share experiences, and really take the time to engage with suppliers, educators, and each other — without the overwhelming crowds and noise.

Events like GroomFest are vital to the health of our industry. They don’t just showcase products or techniques —

GROOMFEST

they build community, raise professional standards, and offer valuable education. Being part of an event that puts groomers first and reinvests in their growth sends a strong message: that the work we do matters, and that we’re stronger when we support one another.

Pets at Home

We’re incredibly excited to immerse ourselves in the grooming community and truly showcase the expertise and passion we bring to the industry. It’s a fantastic opportunity to connect with like-minded groomers, share knowledge, and explore the diverse perspectives that make the grooming world so dynamic.

What sets this event apart is the sense of community—it’s one place where commercial groomers from all over can come together, exchange experiences, and inspire one another. From discovering the latest tools and innovations to seeing how different businesses operate, it’s a chance to be fully immersed in all things grooming. Being an active and relevant part of the grooming community means everything to us. With the largest number of salons across the UK, we’re proud to represent such a wide network of talented professionals. Events like this give us the chance to connect with groomers who work with us—or who may want to in the future—and that interaction helps us grow, evolve, and better serve the grooming industry as a whole.

Sally Hart

GroomFest! Where to start? If you have never been before, then may I recommend attending this year. And to those of you who are already regulars, well, you are in for a treat.

I am humbled to again be a part of this one-of-a-kind event in the UK. Seeing grooming & pet trade and services all in one place, supporting and working alongside each other, is huge.

Being able to give back to this industry that is my passion, is such an honour and achievement. And attending, supporting and being apart of these amazing grooming events helps build an industry we can all be proud of.

Groomers joining together to learn is a heartwarming experience and this year, with the addition of a second day, also focused on education, its is going to set

the bar for years to come.

Book your Sunday Seminar tickets and don’t forget to take advantage of the earlybird price for Monday’s demos too.

Louisa Tandy

I love GroomFest! It’s my favourite event of the year, as it’s such a massive shopping experience outside of Crufts. It’s in a great location with free parking, and not only does it have all the top grooming suppliers there, along with many other trade stands, but also a fantastic range of seminars.

This year is particularly exciting as it’s over 2 days; we have some really informative seminars on the Sunday

that promise to take your grooming to the next level with over 50 different grooming demonstrations all happening on the Monday; we even have a cat grooming demonstration.

To be involved in GroomFest is incredibly important to me; helping to push the industry forward and bring the grooming community closer together is something I feel very strongly about, and GroomFest does this by encouraging networking, shopping, and learning, all under one roof.

There has never been a grooming event of this size in the UK, and it promises to be spectacular.

First Aid Qualified?

We hear from Rachel Bean RVN, as she discusses why every groomer should be first aid qualified and what to do if one of your clients has sunburn.

Hello to all my fellow dog lovers and professionals in the grooming world!

It’s been a busy few weeks for Team Bean! I’ve had the pleasure of appearing on not one but two incredible podcasts recently. I joined the brilliant Dr. David Marlin for the Animalweb Expert Panel to chat about all things canine care and also had a heartwarming conversation with the fabulous Yaz Porrit from Yorkshire Pooches Therapies. Both were amazing opportunities to share insights on canine welfare and reinforce the importance of first aid knowledge in our sector.

I’m also delighted to announce that I’ll be an online expert for the upcoming Pet Pro Expo this November. It’s a huge honour, and I can’t wait to speak at this

fantastic event. It’s going to be packed full of tips and tools for pet professionals across the UK.

As many of you know, I’m proud to have written the iPET Network’s Level 3 Qualification in Canine First Aid, a nationally recognised course designed specifically for professionals like you. Whether you’re a seasoned groomer or just starting out, this qualification equips you with the confidence and competence to act fast in an emergency, something that could one day save a dog’s life.

From cuts and scrapes to seizures, allergic reactions, or heatstroke, having up-to-date first aid training means you’re not just offering a top-quality grooming service; you’re prioritising

welfare at every turn. Dogs don’t always show obvious signs of illness or pain, so being first aid qualified helps you spot the subtle signs that something may be wrong.

So, if you haven’t already, please consider investing in your skills by taking the iPET Level 3 qualification. It’s not just a box to tick; it’s a commitment to excellence in animal care.

This month’s tip: Recognising sunburn in dogs.

Sunburn in dogs often appears in areas with thin or light fur, such as the nose and muzzle, ear tips, belly, groin and inner thighs, and around the eyes. Common symptoms include redness and inflammation, warmth to the touch, flaky or peeling skin, whimpering or

shying away from touch, and licking or scratching the area.

What Groomers Should Do Immediately

Move the Dog Out of the Sun

If the dog is in direct sunlight, bring them into a shaded or indoor area as quickly as possible.

Assess the Severity

Mild sunburn: Redness and slight discomfort

Moderate to severe sunburn: blistering, raw skin, signs of pain or distress

If there are blisters, open wounds, or signs of heatstroke (vomiting, panting heavily, lethargy), seek veterinary advice immediately.

Cool the Area Gently

Use cool (not cold) water and a soft cloth or compress to gently soothe the sunburnt area.

Never apply ice or ice packs directly; this can damage the skin further.

Avoid Human Products

Do not apply human sunscreen, aloe vera gels, or creams unless they are vetapproved and dog-safe.

Some ingredients in human products (like zinc oxide or lidocaine) can be toxic to dogs if ingested.

Minimise Further Irritation

Avoid grooming or brushing the affected area.

Postpone any further clipping or shaving around that spot; exposed skin is more vulnerable.

Inform the Owner Immediately

Describe what you’ve observed and what you’ve done so far, and recommend they monitor the dog or consult a vet, especially if there’s blistering or significant discomfort.

Preventative Advice for Future Visits:

Recommend owners use pet-safe sunscreen for dogs with light or sparse coats.

Suggest protective clothing like UV shirts or doggy sun hats for high-risk breeds.

Schedule grooming appointments during cooler times of day, and remind owners not to walk or leave dogs outside too long in peak sun.

Understanding Insurance

For insurance cover as unique as your business, look no further than Cliverton, a broker with over 50 years of experience understanding the ups and downs and the ins and outs of running a grooming business.

Material Risk insurance covers your physical assets, including buildings, tools, and equipment, from damage or loss. As a pet groomer, your equipment is a major asset to your business, making it essential to ensure that it is properly protected.

Not only do you need to ensure everything is insured, but also that it’s covered for the correct current replacement or rebuild value. It is important to consider that what you paid for your equipment initially may not reflect the current replacement cost. If a claim occurs and your tools are not insured for their full replacement value, this is known as underinsurance; it may impact the claim settlement and result in either part of your claim not being paid or the claim not being paid at all.

To avoid underinsurance, review your equipment and replacement costs at each renewal, keeping your insurer informed of current values, and ensure you have the correct level of cover.

You may also have a purpose-built building at home or a salon that you work from, which needs to be insured. As with tools and equipment, it is important to make sure that you keep your insurer up to date regarding the replacement value for the building. This value needs to consider all costs associated should the entire building need to be rebuilt.

When insuring your tools and equipment, it is important to check any cover limitations. As a mobile groomer, your tools travel with you, but if they are only covered at your home location and if an incident occurs at a client’s home, they will not be covered. If you keep

all equipment in your van overnight, ensuring that the vehicle is locked and in a locked garage may be required by your policy. It is best to inform your insurer of your business activities to ensure your cover meets your needs. You may also consider adding additional cover for accidental damage to tools and equipment, but be aware this doesn’t cover wear and tear.

Remember, checking locks on windows and doors and installing external lights, intruder alarms, and security cameras can all act as a deterrent to would-be thieves and is best practice to reduce the risk of a claim. By maintaining up-to-date insurance and taking steps to reduce risks, you can groom with confidence.

Scissors

Importance of Ergonomics

For groomers, hands aren’t just tools of the trade, they are integral to the trade! Yet, many overlook how the wrong scissors can lead to chronic pain, reduced precision, and potentially career-ending injuries. We discuss five ways in which your scissor choices impact hand health and injury prevention.

Handle Design

Offset and crane handles are designed to position your thumb and fingers more naturally, minimising awkward angles and excess thumb travel. Unlike traditional straight handles, these ergonomic designs help keep your wrist in a neutral position, greatly reducing tension on tendons and nerves. Over continuous hours and years of grooming, this can mean the difference between a comfortable career and developing repetitive strain injuries.

Easing Fatigue

Heavy scissors force your hand to grip tighter and work harder, leading to early fatigue. Professional ergonomic shears distribute weight towards the pivot point, reducing effort with each snip. This design enables groomers to work longer without feeling any burn in their hand, forearm or shoulder—something that is crucial during back-to-back grooms or when grooming breeds that demand intense grooming.

Preventing Over Gripping

Scissors that fit too loosely or force your thumb too deep into the hole create muscle tension and encourage awkward compensation movements. Quality ergonomic scissors often come with removable or customisable finger inserts, ensuring a snug, controlled fit. This tiny adjustment keeps your grip relaxed and reduces micro-tears.

Reducing Cumulative Injuries

Carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis and trigger finger are common occupational hazards for groomers. They often

develop gradually, with tightness, tingling, or reduced hand strength that worsens over time. Using ergonomically designed shears tailored to your hand size and cutting style significantly cuts down on repetitive stress. Paired with proper technique and stretching, it’s one of the best ways to ensure career longevity.

Investing in Ergonomics

Healthy hands aren’t just free from pain, they’re also more precise. When your grip is relaxed and movement flows naturally, your work becomes smoother, your lines sharper, and your transitions more seamless. This means happier clients, better reviews, and ultimately a stronger reputation.

A Cut Above the Rest

As part of our wider scissors feature, we delve into the importance of grooming scissors for a business and how they’re actually a serious business investment and not just a grooming tool!

Whether you’re a seasoned professional or just starting out in the world of grooming, one thing is for sure: the right pair of grooming scissors can make all the difference. We understand that scissors can make all the difference as an extension of your hands, shaping grooms and your business. When used effectively, grooming scissors are more than just a tool in your kit; they can be a crucial investment in your business, leading to better results, increased satisfaction, and ultimately, higher profitability.

Verity Hardcastle, master groomer and owner of The Coat, understands that high-quality grooming scissors are an investment in efficiency, precision, and consistency. Verity shared, “When your

tools glide through the coat with ease, you’re not only saving time on every groom but also reducing fatigue and strain on your hands and wrists, as our tools are all designed to be lightweight, something every busy professional understands.”

When investing in high-quality scissors, you’re investing in superior results, and clients will notice the

difference with small details adding up to create a polished and professional look. The more precise and clean the cut, the better the overall results, which enhances the client’s experience and builds your reputation. Verity shared, “Premium scissors, like the ones we offer and thoroughly test in real salons with a master groomer, allow you to work faster and with more precision. That

means smoother finishes, less time spent correcting lines, and fewer touch-ups, allowing you to either groom more dogs in a day or dedicate more time to styling without burning out.

“Higher quality finishes also mean happier clients, better word-of-mouth recommendations, and more referrals. Consistently polished grooms build your reputation and justify premium pricing—because clients see and feel the difference.”

Not all scissors are created equal, so, understandably, it can be a minefield picking what’s right for you! Verity shared her five essential points that groomers should consider when selecting their next pair of scissors, “First up, consider blade quality. High-quality steel matters. It affects sharpness, durability, and how smoothly the scissors cut through different coat types. Our scissors are made with premium-grade Japanese steel and are thoroughly tested by a master groomer on real dogs because salon performance is non-negotiable.

“Next, consider comfort and balance. Look for scissors that feel balanced in your hand and reduce wrist strain, so don’t choose anything too heavy. Groomers spend hours a day using scissors, so ergonomics matter. A good pair should feel like an extension of your hand – not a challenge to control.

“Then, consider the scissor type and purpose; not all scissors do the same job! Straight, curved, thinners, chunkers, hybrids – each has a purpose. Choose scissors based on the kind of grooms you do and the coat types you work with.

“After this, think about ease of maintenance. Look for scissors that are easy to clean, oil, and adjust. Wellmaintained scissors last longer and perform better. At The Coat, we offer tools that are both professional-grade and practical at a great price, because we know groomers need to focus on dogs – not fussy equipment.

“Last but not least, look at the value of your investment. High quality doesn’t need to mean high price. Choose scissors that give you professional performance at a fair cost. At The Coat, we believe every groomer deserves access to tools they can trust – without breaking the bank.”

Ultimately, the goal of any professional dog groomer is to keep clients satisfied and come back for more. High-quality

scissors play a direct role in client satisfaction, strengthening client loyalty to your business. Whether it’s achieving a breed-standard trim or following a client’s unique style request, premium scissors enable you to meet and exceed

their expectations. Happy clients are more likely to return for repeat visits and recommend your services to others, leading to new business and greater profitability.

Working with Matted Cats

Matting can happen in cats no matter how long their fur is, present in both short- and long-furred felines. We hear from Katie Gwilt, The Kat Lady, as she shares five things to consider when dealing with matted cats.

What is the cause of the matting?

Let’s have a look at what causes matting in cats. A lot has to do with their shedding cycle. Cats change their coats in the UK at two main points in the year to grow their winter and summer coats. I often find the change to the summer coat is the larger problem, as they are going from thick fur to thinner, so it tends to get stuck more and not be properly discarded. The weather in the UK is slowly changing though, causing more heat waves and storms, so bear that in mind too. I have found that cats are shedding much more this July compared to last year due to the extra humid weather, which I am personally not a fan of!

Does the cat have a health or pain condition?

Many common health conditions in cats, such as diabetes, kidney disease, and hyperthyroidism, can all cause changes in a cat’s fur. Hyperthyroidism often causes

it to become greasy and can be a way to spot the condition early. Diabetes and kidney disease can create dry skin and dandruff. Both of these are highly susceptible to knotting and tangling. Arthritis and other pain conditions can also cause knots to start forming as the cat is less able to move and twist into those fabulous yoga poses they are known for. Like us humans, they slow down as they age, and health conditions often lead to more time sleeping and less time grooming. Also consider your

handling techniques if the cat has a health problem. A soft warm blanket can be much better and more comfortable than a cold table for arthritic joints. If you notice changes in a regular feline cat’s fur, it is worth pointing it out to their human so they can decide whether a vet check is needed.

Is the Human using the right grooming tool for the job?

This is one I find a lot. Many cat people

Sometimes you can spot matted fur like this, but other times it is at the skin level and you won’t know it’s there until you physically touch the cat
Mats can come in all shapes and sizes. This one was between the front legs connecting them together. Ouch.

spend time grooming their cats, but they just aren’t using the right tools and techniques. A common one is using a slicker-style brush or mitt on a cat with long, dense fur. The tool won’t get to the root of the fur, so although the top is brushed nicely, they can be pelted at the skin level. Take some time to go through what your clients are using at home and give them some tips and advice to be able to help keep their cats in the best health between visits with you.

Will the cat let you groom them?

Cats who are matted are usually much less happy being handled and groomed. The knots and mats pull every time they move. They possibly hurt or cause discomfort just from being stroked, so they can cause behaviour changes that look like aggression, grumpiness, and being less willing to play. Their human may have tried to use an incorrect tool to remove knots as well, making the cat fearful of being touched with any grooming equipment. In these cases take a slow approach, and if the cat becomes panicked, know when it is time to stop the groom for the day. You can either try again another time, or if the cat is unsafe due to severe anxiety and stress or lashing out, it could be time to refer them to the vet. Once the mats are removed, you may find a completely different creature (in a positive way!) if you see them again for a follow-up appointment.

How to tackle any mats

How you deal with mats really depends on how tight they are, where they are, and what the cat is willing to let you do! You can try to comb them out if the cat is patient and they are on the top and sides of the cat’s body. If they are tight, though, likely they will need clipping out. Obviously don’t use scissors, as cats skin is extra thin when compared with human and canine skin. Plus it isn’t attached to the skeleton, so it can form rolls and tucks easily. I’ve walked in on some horrible accidents by people just trying to do their best but making things so much worse and cutting the cat. Any around the joints and belly I usually shave out, to be honest. The skin is thinner there and looser too, so using a comb or brush can really pull. I want to keep the cat as relaxed as possible and ensure that it feels I am trying my best to help rather than yanking and causing pain by accident. Keep the cat’s skin taut and stretched so you don’t catch it.

Bear in mind

For really matted cats, a full shave may be needed. I personally don’t do lion cuts on short-haired cats as a standard

in the UK unless they are so matted there really isn’t a choice. If matting has happened once, it is likely to keep happening, so do try and book in regular visits to keep on top of the fur as it grows back. In the summer remember cats can also get skin cancer and sunburn, so if they have pink skin in particular, do advise cat-friendly sun cream. In the winter it’s the opposite; give some guidelines on how to keep them warm. The cold is a big enemy to the elderly, whether they are human, dog, cat, or otherwise.

Grooming an elderly cat on my lap who has some health issues. I have suggested doing a blood test of her thyroid levels if possible as well after looking at her fur and body condition.
