From Waxing to Winning

Uliana Ticu, a laser practitioner, shares her passion for the profession and how Zemits Quidion 3W transformed her career. We love spotlighting professionals who grow their businesses with the help of innovation and determination. Uliana Ticu is one such success story. Once offering only waxing services, she now runs a flourishing laser hair removal business—thanks to strategic upskilling and the Zemits Quidion 3W.

Uliana, can you tell us how your journey in aesthetics began?

My journey in beauty began in 2019 when I took my first professional course in waxing and sugaring. I worked hard to build a loyal client base, and things were going well. But around 2021, I noticed a shift—clients started cancelling their waxing appointments. I received at least two messages per week from clients who told me they were switching to laser hair removal. That was a big red flag for me. I knew I had to adapt or risk losing the business I had built.

That’s when I decided to upskill and get certified in laser. In 2022, I completed my Level 4 Laser and IPL qualification— and that decision changed everything for me.

Why do you think so many clients are now choosing laser over waxing?

Clients are much more informed nowadays. Many were struggling with issues like excessive hair growth, ingrown hairs, folliculitis, skin irritation, and even darkened skin in areas like the underarms or knees. They were tired of shaving or waxing every few weeks and wanted something more permanent.

Laser hair removal offers long-term benefits—not just for aesthetics, but for skin health too. My clients often report smoother, clearer skin, and some even see a reduction in sweat odour after underarm treatments. It boosts their confidence in ways waxing never could.

Uliana Ticu

How do you approach client consultation?

The consultation is crucial—it’s the foundation for safe and effective treatment. I usually spend 15 minutes with each new client, starting with a detailed health questionnaire. We discuss recent tanning, any underlying medical conditions like diabetes or cancer history, medication use, and whether they’re pregnant or breastfeeding.

Once I’ve confirmed there are no contraindications, I explain what the procedure involves, what sensations they might feel, and what the results and recovery should look like. I want them to feel completely informed and comfortable before we even begin.

How do you prepare clients for their first session?

Preparation starts even before they step into the clinic. I send each client an online health and prep form in advance, which includes instructions such as shaving the area the day before, avoiding lotions or deodorants, and staying out of the sun for at least 2 weeks.

During the appointment, I always perform a patch test first to assess how their skin responds. Then I explain that after their first treatment, they’ll see hair shedding in about two weeks, followed by a regrowth phase that becomes thinner and lighter over time.

You mentioned experimenting with treatment intervals. What did you discover?

Yes, during my training, I learned the

standard four-week interval between sessions. But I also read conflicting advice online, so I decided to test both methods on myself. On the one hand, I did six sessions spaced exactly 4 weeks apart. On the other hand, I started with a 6-week interval between sessions, gradually increasing the interval and the laser intensity.

The difference was incredible. The side with customised intervals had no regrowth for over a year. That showed me how important it is to tailor the treatment to each individual.

Can you share one or two client transformations you’re especially proud of?

One client had severe facial hair that made her feel very self-conscious. After just three sessions, the difference was

life-changing for her. Another struggled with painful folliculitis in the bikini area, but by the fourth session, her skin was noticeably clearer and healthier. These are the moments that remind me why I love what I do.

Why did you choose Zemits Quidion 3W?

I did a lot of research before choosing a device. Zemits stood out because of their amazing support, ease of use, and clinical results. I treat around five clients a day, and even after nearly three years, the machine performs perfectly.

The customer care is exceptional. A year after I purchased it, they reminded me to change the filters and booked my annual service. Plus, I received two years of free service with my machine— something most other companies charge extra for.

What advice would you give to lookingprofessionals to grow?

Stay flexible and never stop learning. Don’t wait until you’ve lost clients to upgrade your skills. If something isn’t working, adapt. Invest in good education, use high-quality equipment, and genuinely care about your clients’ results. Happy clients will always be your best marketing.

Ruby Watson, Fusion Hair Co

Fusion Hair Co’s Ruby Watson is a rising stylist celebrated for her transformative results, creative confidence and genuine connection with clients. With stage experience, editorial work and big ambitions ahead, she’s quickly becoming one to watch in the industry.

What first inspired you to become a hairstylist, and when did you realise this was more than just a job, that it was your calling?

Becoming a hairdresser is the only job I have ever wanted to pursue. My mum even said, “If you don’t enjoy this, I don’t know what else you’ll do,” because I have never wanted to do anything else. It became more than just a job when I saw the real impact it had on my clients. Welcoming people into the salon and witnessing their transformations it’s the most rewarding job.

How would you describe your signature style or approach to hairdressing, and what do you think sets you apart in the industry?

The services I provide include: All cuts, including curly, restyles, etc.. All foiling up to a full head. balayage. Keratin

smoothing Treatments. roots and full head colours. vibrant colours. Colour correction. Silk Press. Blow-dry. Perming. toners, hair ups and styling.

I understand hair colour, cut and style is a massive part of a person’s identity. I take into consideration the client’s wants and needs, as well as their facial shape and skin tone. I want my clients to feel their absolute best and to be beaming with confidence when they leave my chair

Can you share a moment in your career so far that made you especially proud, perhaps a transformation, competition, or creative breakthrough?

One of the proudest moments in my career is witnessing the transformation of my clients. I have seen clients who underwent chemotherapy and were unsure of how to manage their hair,

as well as those who simply didn’t feel like themselves. Observing their transformation, how this helped them feel like a new version of themselves, happier and more confident, was a defining moment for me. This experience reinforced that my work is more than just a job.

Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to participate in several significant events that have shaped my professional path. They include assisting in shoots and competitions, for example, the Afro Hair and Beauty contest. Also assisting in a shoot for the Good Salon Guide magazine.

I was also given the opportunity to take part in the platform event for How To Cut It, by doing my very own platform and showcasing my skills of hair ups to other peers in the industry. This helped grow my confidence to speak in front of a crowd and also in the work I create, knowing I can produce something that I’m proud to showcase to others and know they’ll learn from me.

My Boss, Chris, who is a huge role model to me, always provides me with the chance to attend big hair events, which I never turn down. So far, I’ve been to Salon International several years in a row.

Salon of the Month Backstage Chelsea, London

When Backstage Chelsea opened its doors in December 2024, it marked more than just a new salon launch — it was the beginning of a bold new chapter for a brand that has redefined modern beauty culture. Founded in Kyiv by visionary entrepreneur Karina Dubinina, Backstage began as a single, forward-thinking salon driven by artistry, innovation, and exceptional service. Over 15 years, that vision blossomed into a renowned network of 15 locations across Kyiv, each celebrated for its signature blend of creativity and care.

The opening of the Chelsea flagship brought this legacy to London’s iconic King’s Road — a natural home for a brand that celebrates individuality and artistic expression. In less than a year, Backstage Chelsea has already become a vibrant part of its new neighbourhood, collaborating with local businesses, participating in community events, and quickly earning a reputation as one of Chelsea’s most dynamic beauty destinations.

Backstage was born from Karina Dubinina’s desire to reimagine what a beauty salon could be — not just a place for treatments, but a holistic experience that balances technical excellence with warmth and creativity. The Chelsea salon embodies this philosophy. With sleek interiors, carefully curated design details, and a highly skilled team, it captures the essence of contemporary sophistication while remaining effortlessly welcoming. Every element — from the lighting to the service flow — is designed to make clients feel inspired, comfortable, and confident.

The concept centres on enhancing natural beauty through

modern artistry, underpinned by a belief that true beauty begins with confidence and self-expression. At Backstage, style meets substance, and every service is tailored to reflect the individuality of each client.

At the heart of Backstage lies a simple but powerful philosophy: care, expertise, and community. These three guiding principles shape every aspect of the client journey — from the first consultation to the final finishing touch. Backstage’s mission is to make beauty accessible, empowering, and effortless, helping clients look and feel their best while reconnecting with their sense of self. The team’s dedication to continuous learning, attention to detail, and authentic connection defines both the brand and the people behind it. Every Backstage experience is designed to be personal, attentive, and transformative — qualities that have built lasting loyalty among clients and admiration across the industry.

Innovation sits at the core of Backstage’s success, most notably through its groundbreaking “Smart Beauty” Service. Designed for the pace of modern city life, this unique offering allows clients to enjoy up to three treatments simultaneously — seamlessly blending efficiency with indulgence. Imagine having a blow-dry while receiving a manicure and makeup application, or pairing a BBL facial with a manicure and pedicure. Each combination is fully personalised, ensuring every client leaves looking polished and feeling renewed. This approach to time-conscious luxury perfectly captures Backstage’s forwardthinking spirit, redefining what premium beauty means for busy professionals and modern lifestyles.

Within just its first year, Backstage Chelsea has already earned significant recognition within the beauty industry. The salon was named a finalist for Tribu-te Magazine’s “Salon of the Year” in the Design category — a testament to its distinctive aesthetic and exceptional guest experience. It was also shortlisted in the Chelsea Awards’ “Only in Chelsea” category, celebrating its positive impact on the local community and its contribution to the area’s creative and cultural energy. These milestones reflect not only the salon’s design and technical excellence but also its ability to connect authentically with its clientele — both locally and internationally.

As Backstage continues to evolve, its vision for the future remains ambitious and clear. The next phase will see the development of the brand’s pioneering 360° Beauty Concept — a holistic philosophy that unites aesthetics, wellness, and technology under one roof. This evolution will introduce an expanded menu of advanced body and facial treatments, designed to complement the salon’s existing beauty services and create a truly comprehensive destination for self-care and transformation.

Following the success of its Chelsea flagship, Backstage is also exploring further London expansion, bringing its signature mix of artistry, innovation, and efficiency to new neighbourhoods. Each location will maintain the brand’s refined, welcoming identity while reflecting the personality of its local community. With innovation as its driving force, Backstage’s mission remains steadfast: to redefine beauty through expertise, creativity, and genuine connection — offering every client an experience that elevates both their style and their wellbeing.

Healthy Hair Starts Here

Bruno Marc Giamattei, the creative force behind JOICO EMEA and the Marc Antoni Group – a wealth of knowledge, a figurehead within the industry, and an incredible hairdresser. With his decades of salon experience, Bruno explains why scalp care is the foundation of every great hair transformation.

Once upon a time, a salon visit was all about colour, cut, and shine. Today, more professionals are looking beyond the strands themselves - to the scalp beneath. Across the UK, stylists and trichologists are reporting a surge in clients seeking help for everything from dryness and flaking to hair loss and sensitivity. The message is clear: scalp health is no longer a niche topic; it’s at the heart of great hair.

1.

Start with the scalp

Healthy hair starts with a balanced scalp. If the scalp is congested or irritated, the hair won’t get its chance to shine! Begin every consultation by examining the scalp and asking questions about lifestyle, diet, and stress.

2. Educate every client

Clients often don’t realise that the scalp needs the same level of attention as your skin. Explain that gentle exfoliation, detoxing, and hydration can dramatically improve shine, strength and the condition of your hair.

3. Invest in professional cleansing

Salon-grade scalp treatments help remove build-up and restore balance. A tailored cleansing system supports longterm health, preparing the hair for colour or styling and ensuring lasting results.

4. Encourage at-home consistency

Simple, regular routines deliver the best results. From how often you wash your hair to the products you’re using - you

might not think it, but this will make a massive difference in your hair’s health and its appearance! I’d recommend using products that are specifically formulated for your hair type to give your hair some extra TLC!

5. Balance from the inside out

Remind clients that diet, hydration, and stress play huge roles in your hair. Encouraging that your clients follow a healthy, balanced lifestyle with more wate and nutrient-rich foods, alongside a good hair routine will support everything you do in the salon.

Bruno’s five essentials prove that when you treat the scalp as the root of beauty, every strand tells the story. @brunomarc10

Scalp Care, Salon Success

Once upon a time, a salon visit was all about colour, cut, and shine. Today, more professionals are looking beyond the strands themselves — to the scalp beneath. Across the UK, stylists and trichologists are reporting a surge in clients seeking help for everything from dryness and flaking to hair loss and sensitivity. The message is clear: scalp health is no longer a niche topic; it’s at the heart of great hair.

Hygiene, balance, and tailored care are now part of every serious conversation about hair wellness. As awareness grows, salons are uniquely positioned to educate clients, build trust, and deliver targeted treatments that not only improve hair condition but also reinforce loyalty. Two industry experts, Marlene Lamont, Owner and Creative Director of Urban Hair & Beauty, MOOD UK Ambassador and Artistic Team Member, and Wil Fleeson, Director of Rainbow Room International and Trichologist Scotland, share their

professional insights on tackling scalp issues, guiding clients with empathy, and maintaining long-term results.

According to Marlene, the first step in any effective scalp-care routine is simply paying closer attention.

“In my salon, we see a lot of clients struggling with oily or dry scalps, flaking, and sensitivity. Often, these issues are linked to underlying imbalances, whether it’s lifestyle factors, product build-up, or individual scalp conditions,” she tells us.

Rather than rushing to apply a quick fix, Marlene emphasises the importance of thoughtful assessment. “I always start by assessing the scalp visually and through touch, asking questions about routine, diet, and stress levels. That gives a clear picture of the root cause, so we’re not just addressing symptoms — we’re treating the scalp in a way that actually restores balance.”

That same holistic approach is echoed by Wil. “The most common issues I see are excessive hair shedding, scalp irritation, and reduced hair density. In many cases, these are not isolated problems but symptoms of an underlying imbalance, whether nutritional, hormonal, or lifestyle related,” he explains.

“As a trichologist, I always start with a thorough consultation. I look at the scalp’s condition, the hair’s structure, and I ask detailed questions about health, stress levels, and diet. The scalp is often the first place the body shows signs of internal stress, so understanding the client’s overall well-being is key

to finding the root cause rather than just treating the symptom.”

Together, their insights highlight a broader shift in modern haircare — one that treats the scalp as the foundation, not an afterthought.

Raising scalp issues can be tricky. Clients may already feel self-conscious or defensive about flaking or thinning hair, which makes the professional’s approach just as important as the treatment itself.

Marlene says sensitivity and reassurance are key: “I always try to make it about care, not criticism. I explain that a healthy scalp is the foundation for strong, vibrant hair, and that a few extra steps can make a real difference. I never want anyone to feel judged.”

She also finds that introducing treatments as part of a wellness journey helps remove any stigma. “I often introduce clients to the MOOD Derma Cleansing range. For example, the Pre-Shampoo Treatment with charcoal and acai extract gently detoxifies and refreshes the scalp. I present it as a treatment to support healthy hair and overall scalp wellbeing. Framing it this way helps clients feel empowered and motivated to take care of their scalp rather than self-conscious about it.”

Wil agrees that tone and empathy are everything. “It’s all about language, empathy, and education. Clients often come in already feeling self-conscious, so my goal is to create a safe, professional space where they feel supported, not judged,” he tells us.

“I always start by explaining that hair and scalp health are reflections of what’s happening within the body, and that

challenges are incredibly common and treatable. Using visuals or analysis tools can help the client see what’s happening, so it feels less personal and more factual. The focus is never on what’s ‘wrong’ but on what we can do to improve their scalp health and overall hair wellness together.”

These human-centred conversations transform what could be uncomfortable into an empowering, solutions-based dialogue — and that’s what builds trust.

Scalp-focused services are becoming as integral to salons as colour glossing or conditioning masks. Both experts agree that results depend on precision, consistency, and client education.

“In the salon, I focus on targeted scalp care, cleansing, detoxifying, and gently stimulating the scalp to support healthy hair growth,” says Marlene. “I use products from the MOOD Derma Cleansing range, like the Derma Cleansing Shampoo, to help regulate sebum, manage flaking, and maintain a balanced scalp during treatments.”

For Wil, the emphasis is on stimulation and internal balance. “Consistency is everything. In the salon, I use targeted scalp therapies that focus on exfoliation, rebalancing, and stimulation, often incorporating gentle massage to increase circulation,” he explains. “At home, I recommend clients maintain results with pH-balanced cleansers, lightweight conditioners, and scalp tonics that encourage healthy follicle activity. Just as importantly, I advise them to monitor nutrition, particularly iron, vitamin D, and essential fatty acids, as these play a huge role in maintaining strong, resilient hair growth.”

Wil adds that education is key to lasting success: “Clients need to understand why we recommend certain products or routines, so they feel empowered to take care of their scalp between visits. When they see the difference for themselves, they’re far more likely to stay consistent.”

That’s where the salon experience becomes truly transformative — not just providing a treatment, but giving clients the knowledge to sustain the benefits long after they leave the chair.

Both experts agree that the real secret to long-term scalp health lies in education and small, sustainable changes. “At home, I encourage clients to follow a simple, consistent routine,”

Marlene tells us. “Understanding why each step matters, whether it’s using the pre-shampoo treatment to detox or the shampoo to cleanse, helps them feel confident keeping their scalp healthy between visits. That way, the benefits of our salon treatments last, and the hair looks and feels its best every day.”

The combination of professional treatment, at-home maintenance, and informed self-care creates a powerful cycle of improvement — and, crucially, client satisfaction. As more people recognise that beautiful hair starts with a balanced scalp, salons that champion this message will stand out not only for their technical skill but for their care and credibility.

The modern salon is evolving into a

space that goes far beyond aesthetics. It’s becoming a wellness hub — one that acknowledges how stress, environment, and nutrition all show up in the scalp and hair.

As Marlene and Wil demonstrate, today’s most successful professionals combine empathy, expertise, and evidence-based care. Whether through advanced scalp analysis, targeted detox treatments, or educating clients on nutritional balance, they’re reshaping how we define healthy hair.

Because when clients understand that scalp care isn’t a luxury — it’s the foundation — they don’t just leave the salon with great hair. They leave empowered, informed, and eager to come back.

Smart solutions for healthier hair

Curated Beauty London, the female-founded beauty and wellness brand, has expanded into haircare with two high-performance innovations designed to strengthen, repair and revitalise hair from scalp to strand: ROOT FORCE Scalp Strengthening Serum and STRAND SURGE

Concentrated Hair Repair Booster.

Developed by experts and made in the UK, the duo brings together advanced technology and simplicity, creating results-driven formulas that empower both professionals and clients.

ROOT FORCE (RRP £40 / 30ml) is a lightweight, leave-on scalp serum powered by a Hair Redensifying Peptide Complex, caffeine, biotin, and botanical extracts. The formula targets thinning or fragile hair, stimulating the scalp to improve density and resilience over time. It’s particularly effective for clients experiencing midlife hormonal changes, stress-related shedding, or post-colour sensitivity.

STRAND SURGE (RRP £30 / 30ml) complements ROOT FORCE by focusing on the hair fibre itself. A concentrated Bond-Building Matrix (50%) and creatine complex work to rebuild internal hair structure, restore elasticity, and repair chemical or heat damage. Simply mix 5–10 drops into a conditioner or mask to supercharge results and strengthen the hair from within.

Together, they create a complete approach to hair wellness by restoring strength from the root while rebuilding structure along the strand.

Natasha Grocutt from Growing Hair from the Inside Out and Curated Beauty Hair Growth Expert is a professional hairdresser specialising in scalp and hair health, says:

“So many clients are struggling with midlife hair changes from thinning, fragility, or lack of bounce, but don’t know where to start. As experts, we want our clients to take home our expertise

and continue caring from their hair, at home. These two products make it easy for us professionals to start the conversation about scalp and strand care. They’re perfect retail add-ons: simple to use, work wonders, and are designed to complement any existing regime.”

Both ROOT FORCE and STRAND SURGE are vegan, cruelty-free, and suitable for all hair types, including

colour-treated and chemically processed hair.

For salons, they represent a new category opportunity: premium selfcare products that bridge wellness and hair health, offering clients visible improvement and a reason to return.

The laser transforming clinics in 2026

In an industry defined by innovation, few technologies make the kind of impact that reshapes both client expectations and business growth overnight. The new generation of dualwavelength non-ablative fractional lasers, combining Erbium (1550nm) and Thulium (1927nm) energy, is doing exactly that. This intelligent pairing brings medical standard results together with outstanding safety — and it’s quickly becoming the go-to investment for clinics determined to stay ahead for 2026.

Beyond CO2: Superior Results, Without the Risks

Traditional CO2 lasers have long been a cornerstone of skin resurfacing, but their ablative nature comes at a cost: extended downtime, patient discomfort, and the need for medical supervision. In contrast, dual 1550/1927nm fractional systems deliver the same dramatic rejuvenation — without the drawbacks. Deep collagen remodelling and surface renewal occur in a single session, yet clients experience only 24 hours of mild redness. No anaesthetic, no scarring, and none of the two-week recovery time typical of CO2 treatments.

Even better, this new technology is accessible to beauty and aesthetic professionals, not just medics. With expert training, business owners can now deliver truly transformative results once exclusive to medical environments — expanding treatment menus, client reach, and profitability in one step.

The Science of DualWavelength Perfection

Science-led innovation has driven the creation of advanced systems like the SkynReverse, which precisely harnesses the power of both 1550nm and 1927nm wavelengths for total skin remodelling. The 1550nm Erbium wavelength penetrates deeply to rebuild the dermal matrix, stimulating strong collagen regeneration and tightening the skin from within. Meanwhile, the 1927nm Thulium wavelength works on the surface — refining texture, fading pigmentation, and restoring a radiant glow.

Together, they achieve the ultimate non-ablative synergy: one rejuvenates from the inside out, the other perfects the surface. This dual-action approach is supported by over 50 clinical studies, confirming exceptional safety, consistent outcomes, and visibly younger-looking skin after just a single treatment.

High-Demand, High- Value Treatments

With client demand for results-driven, minimal-downtime treatments at an all-time high, this technology couldn’t have arrived at a better time. Suitable for all skin types, it effectively treats fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, pigmentation, stretch marks, and full-face rejuvenation. The combination of versatility and

efficacy makes it a revenue powerhouse for forward-thinking clinics.

The Smartest Investment for 2026

As we move into a new era of aesthetic advancement, one message is clear: clients want faster, safer, evidencebacked results. Dual-wavelength fractional lasers like the SkynReverse are redefining the gold standard in skin transformation — combining clinical credibility with commercial success. For any salon or clinic ready to future-proof its business and offer the next generation of results, this isn’t just another addition to your treatment list — it’s the future of aesthetic excellence. www.skyncare.co.uk

Essential Machine Hygiene in Aesthetics

Hygiene standards in aesthetics clinics are under increasing scrutiny. This is reflected in the UK government’s decision to introduce mandatory licensing measures, which include strict requirements around cleanliness and infection control. Nadine Bellamy-Thomas, National Account Manager Medical and Decontamination at Miele Professional, explains why machine-based hygiene is essential in meeting these new standards.

As treatments become more advanced and clients more aware of clinical protocols, the way tools and equipment are cleaned is becoming a defining factor in how a clinic is perceived and how safely it operates.

Manual cleaning remains common practice in aesthetic clinics, with many still relying solely on methods such as surface wiping and handwashing, despite growing calls for more advanced infection control protocols. It’s a familiar process, but one that’s often slow, inconsistent and, in some cases, unsafe. Chemical exposure, cross-contamination and damage to delicate instruments are all risks that come with handwashing. In busy environments, where time is tight and standards are high, these risks are difficult to justify.

Machine-based cleaning systems offer a more dependable alternative. Already widely used in scientific and medical settings, they’re increasingly relevant to aesthetics - not as a luxury, but as a practical response to rising expectations. Systems that deliver speed, precision and resource efficiency are helping clinics meet hygiene standards without adding pressure to staff.

Beyond consistency, automated washer-disinfectors reduce exposure to harmful substances and lower the risk of injury to both staff and clients. They also help protect tools from wear and tear, extending their lifespan and reducing replacement costs. For clinics looking to improve sustainability, newer systems offer measurable savings in water, energy and detergent use; a small but significant

shift in how resources are managed.

One example is Miele’s ExpertLine range, which supports flexible loading and straightforward operation. Designed specifically for medical environments, including aesthetics clinics, ExpertLine washer-disinfectors deliver reliable, hygienic results while meeting the highest standards of infection control. Instruments are placed in DIN trays, with capacity for up to eight trays in the undercounter machines. Each cycle includes thermal disinfection to ensure that pathogens and bacteria are quickly and effectively removed, helping

to streamline workflows and reduce turnaround times.

As regulations tighten and expectations rise, machine-based hygiene is becoming an increasingly recognised standard. Automated systems bring greater consistency and reassurance to cleaning protocols, offering a level of control that manual methods often struggle to match.

For those considering the switch, Miele Professional’s ExpertLine range is designed to support clinics at every stage of their hygiene journey: www.miele.co.uk

Shaping the 2026 Salon

As 2025 draws to a close, the salon industry stands at an exciting crossroads. The past year has been marked by transformation — clients looking for more meaningful experiences, stylists embracing innovation, and business owners rethinking how they connect with people and the planet. The conversation has shifted from aesthetics alone to holistic wellbeing, sustainability, and the deeper value of expertise. So, what can salons expect in 2026? Three leaders in the industry share their thoughts on where the next 12 months will take us.

Tracey Ann Smith, Creative Director at MOOD, says 2025 has been the year clients started to care as much about how their hair feels as how it looks.

“There’s been a growing understanding that healthy hair is the foundation for any great colour or style, and that’s changed the way stylists work too,” she says. “We’ve seen a real move toward lightweight, high-performing products and smarter care systems that strengthen the hair fibre rather than overload it. That balance between care and performance has defined the year for me.”

For Tracey, 2026 will build on that foundation, with personalisation taking centre stage. “Clients are more informed than ever, they understand their hair type, and they want a tailored approach.

It’s not just about chasing trends; it’s about making them wearable and specific to the individual,” she explains. She predicts continued innovation in hair-strengthening and volumising technologies but says education will be the real differentiator. “For salons, education will be key, understanding how

Tracey Ann Smith, Creative Director at MOOD

to combine care, texture, and styling to create hair that moves and lasts.”

When it comes to business priorities, Tracey is clear about what matters most. “I’d say focus on people, both your team and your clients. Investing in your team’s development pays off in every way: their confidence, creativity, and client loyalty all grow. Education is central to everything we do at MOOD, because when stylists really understand the why behind what they’re doing, that knowledge translates into better results and a stronger client connection. Clients today expect not just a service, but an experience, one that feels personal, professional, and forward-thinking.”

At Rainbow Room International, International Artistic Director Suzie McGill agrees that 2025 has been a turning point for client expectations. “2025 has been all about rich, multidimensional colour that feels completely individual,” she says. “Clients want colour that enhances their natural features, grows out softly and still feels luxurious.”

Suzie expects 2026 to deepen the focus on natural beauty and condition. “Clients are asking for shine, movement and manageability, hair that looks effortless but still polished. Treatments are going to be key. Clients now understand that condition is everything, so pairing colour services with restorative treatments will become standard.”

Her advice for salons: keep learning. “Trends evolve quickly, but education gives you the confidence to adapt them for every client,” she says.

That spirit of care extends to the environment, a topic Nilofer Aydinli, Director at Enki Towels, believes will only grow in 2026. “More salons are now looking for ways to make their everyday practices more environmentally friendly. This often starts with small, simple steps — such as improving recycling, going paperless, or switching to disposable eco-towels,” she says.

As the industry heads into 2026, the salons that succeed will be those that combine creativity with consciousness. With clients craving personalisation, stylists pushing innovation, and business leaders embracing sustainability and education, the coming year promises to be one of growth, transformation, and connection.

No Plumbing? No Problem!

For salon owners, trainers and beauty professionals, running water isn’t optional, it’s essential. But when your dream space doesn’t come with plumbing access, it can feel like your plans have hit a wall. That’s where Custom Basins steps in, the award-winning brand behind the UK’s leading no mains water vanity and backwash units, trusted by thousands of salons, spas and training schools across the UK, Europe, US and Canada.

Born from real salon experience, Custom Basins is a family-run business founded by husbandand-wife team Niko and Annie. When Annie moved her growing beauty business into a new space, she discovered there was no access to mains water, and no practical or stylish solution on the market. So, together, they set out to create one.

Their innovation became Custom Basins, a range of fully automatic, selfcontained vanity and backwash units that deliver hot and cold running water at consistent pressure, with no plumbing, no foot pumps and no compromise. Simply plug into two standard electrical sockets, fill the tanks, and you’re ready to go.

“We wanted something salon-quality, not a temporary fix,” explains Annie. “It had to look the part, perform brilliantly and meet licensing requirements – so we built exactly that.”

Every unit is designed with salon life in mind and built to last. They’re easy to clean, simple to refill, and ready to

use straight out of the box. From nail and brow studios to barbers, beauty academies and pop-up events, these plug-and-go systems offer total freedom to design your workspace your way.

Custom Basins units are approved by local councils (check your council requirements) and are the first and only supplier to meet CE, UKCA, NSF and CSA standards, giving business owners complete confidence in compliance.

And true to their name, every model can be tailored to your salon’s style with bespoke designs, from colourmatching and tap finishes to drawer layouts, bin storage and sizing options.

To make things even easier, Custom Basins offer their own finance option, Custom Pay, allowing salon owners to pay just a 30% deposit and spread the remaining balance over up to 11 months, completely interest-free. It’s the perfect

way to get your new sink or backwash up and running without the upfront cost.

With free UK delivery, responsive customer support, and thousands of happy clients worldwide, this familyrun brand continues to redefine what’s possible in terms of no mains water connection units.
