President Colonel Edward Bolitho OBE, Lord - Lieutenant of Cornwall

Presidents’ Message

This is my first Festival as President and it is a real honour to have been asked to take on the role from my illustrious predecessor. The male voice choral tradition is such a rich part of Cornwall’s heritage and, therefore, I am delighted to be able to celebrate this Eighth International Festival. I join all those involved in the organisation and running of the Festival, as well as the Cornish choirs and those who support male choral singing throughout Cornwall, in welcoming our visiting choirs: over five days, almost 60 choirs will be singing in 50 events at 40 venues. As well as the 4 International Gala concerts taking place in Truro, concerts are being held in almost twenty towns covering the whole County. Our visiting choirs will see some of Cornwall’s most attractive places when they visit and sing at Tate St Ives, Eden Project, Lost Gardens of Heligan, Trebah Garden, the Minack Theatre, St Michael’s Mount, Land’s End, Pendennis Castle and the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth. The Festival is a great opportunity to enjoy a wide variety of male choral singing; eight overseas choirs are participating from Australia, Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Norway, Russia, Sweden and USA. They will be singing alongside our own Cornish choirs and a record 21 youth and adult choirs from elsewhere in the UK. The competition also features a big increase in the ‘Over 41 Voices’ Competition this year, as well as twelve choirs participating in the festival for the very first time – welcome to you all! A keenly contested competition and a Gala Concert at the Hall for Cornwall for our Youth Choirs will also be showcasing the very best that boys and young men can offer. I am so pleased to be part of this truly international Festival and thank all those involved in its organisation, especially Rob Elliott the Festival Director, who is directing his first festival with us and brings his Welsh flair to assist in taking the Festival forward. Both Rob and the hardworking Board have done a phenomenal amount to make this Festival such a success; from a grateful Cornwall, thank you.

Festival Director Robert T. Elliot Welcome to an amazing celebration of male choir singing for this, the Eighth Cornwall International Male Choral Festival. The Founding Director back in 2003 – Dr. Roy Wales and my predecessor Peter Davies, developed this unique Festival into a world – class event, and I thank them for their continued and wholehearted support. I am indebted to our President for his considerable support and to our very generous sponsors, donors and patrons without whom the Festival simply could not exist.

Festival Director

To the Festival Chairman- Bruce Taylor; Treasurer – Richard Robinson and the Festival Board, I extend my grateful thanks for your most excellent support over the past two years. Special thanks also go to Vice-Chairman John Larke and Vice–President David Peters, both ably supported by Terry Coplin who have been such a wonderful guiding hand to me as the ‘New Boy’! They have all worked tirelessly and all as Volunteers!

4

A key difference from many other festivals is the role local choirs play. Not only do they sing in concerts but they host them, organise social time afterwards, provide volunteers to staff events and get actively involved in Festival promotion. Without their considerable involvement, the Festival would be a shadow of what it is. We are fortunate to attract the support of an excellent group of compères too. Widely experienced, they bring a professionalism and local knowledge to “chair” concerts, ensuring their smooth running and glossing over any issues with consummate ease. Lastly, the costs for undertaking and producing a festival of this scale are immense. To maintain this wonderful Festival, we are going to need some significant help in the next two years by way of a major financial injection, benefits in kind and, above all, additional personnel. If you feel that you can help us in any way, please drop me an e.mail to rob@cimcf.uk, or call me on (07939) 249021 and I will be happy to meet you to discuss things further. I wish you all an enjoyable time at ‘The World’s Largest Male Choral Festival’!

International Symposium Sunday 30th April. Hall for Cornwall, Truro. 10.30am -12.30pm ‘Connecting with your Audience and improving your choir’ This Year’s topics are very relevant to the needs of today’s choirs. I am sure that all those able to be present will be able to take something away from the sessions. They are applicable for Music Directors and individual singers alike, so we would really encourage you to come and participate. We are delighted to have with us the following Speakers:

• Dr. Mary Black – ‘Verbal Imaging in the rehearsal room’. How words are used to describe what a Director wants to effect changes in what is produced. • Tim Knight – “Taking your choir into the 21st Century” - Recruitment, PR and Audience building. • Dr. Michael Bonshor – ‘The role of role of informal Team Leaders’ - Performance nerves and how to overcome them and how fellow choristers can help in building confidence within your choir.

The Symposium will also feature trade stands from: Lyn Oakes - Discover a new look! For all your choir wear and uniform needs Alan Simmons Music - Comprehensive catalogue of new and exciting choir repertoire Stage Systems - Unique and multi-flexible staging for shows and concerts of all shapes and sizes.

Entry is FREE to all participating choirs. You will need to book via e.mail beforehand to rob@cimcf.uk to get your entry ticket!

Trelawny Male Choir & Audience Lyrics by Robert Stephen Hawker, 1804 - 1875

A good sword and a trusty hand!

And shall Trelawny live?

A merry heart and true!

And shall Trelawny die?

King James’s men shall understand

Here’s twenty thousand Cornish men

What Cornish lads can do!

Will know the reason why!

And have they fixed the where and when? And shall Trelawny die?

And when we come to London Wall,

Here’s twenty thousand Cornish men

A pleasant sight to view,

Will know the reason why!

Come forth! come forth! ye cowards all: Here’s men as good as you.

And shall Trelawny live?

‘Trelawny he’s in keep and hold;

And shall Trelawny die?

Trelawny he may die:

Here’s twenty thousand Cornish men

Here’s twenty thousand Cornish bold

Will know the reason why!

Will know the reason why

Out spake their Captain brave and bold:

And shall Trelawny live?

A merry wight was he:

And shall Trelawny die?

Though London Tower were Michael’s hold,

Here’s twenty thousand Cornish men

We’ll set Trelawny free!

Will know the reason why!

‘We’ll cross the Tamar, land to land: The Severn is no stay: And who shall bid us nay?

As an organist, he has performed on most of the finest organs in Britain’s top cathedrals and halls. He has also performed on major organs in America, France, Austria and Germany. His long experience in the field of church music continues in his present position as Director of Music at Holy Saviour Church in Hitchin. For some 10 years or so, until 2001, Trevor was Musical Director of the Stevenage Choral Society, taking the choirs on tours to Austria, Germany, and the USA, and also formed the Hemel Hempstead School Senior Girls’ Choir in October 1997, which, in its first year, gave a foyer concert at the Royal Festival Hall and sang at the Royal Albert Hall. He was also formerly Musical Director of the North London female voice choir “Jubilate!”, for whom he has written a number of jazz-inspired arrangements. He has accompanied recitals in the Purcell Room, the Wigmore Hall, and on BBC Radio 3, as well as in many music clubs over the country and for over ten years he contributed regularly to BBC Schools Radio music programmes, as keyboards player, musical director, and arranger. He has also made a number of educational recordings for Lindsay Music, and Faber Music. Equally at home in a wide range of musical styles, Trevor has conducted many musicals in the theatre and he has also played keyboards in a number of West End shows. His freelance work as both accompanist and choral conductor has taken him on numerous projects to the USA, as well as to Austria, Germany, France, Switzerland and Holland. Trevor has adjudicated at music festivals, both at home (including venues such as the Royal Festival Hall, the Barbican and abroad (including Hong Kong). During the last few years he has also adjudicated choral festivals at the Royal Festival Hall and the Barbican Centre, in aid of Barnardos, for which organisation he has also performed in many fund-raising concerts.

In addition to his duties at the Cathedral, he directs Three Spires Singers and Orchestra and Cornwall Youth Choir, having previously conducted St Mary’s Singers and Orchestra, Cornwall Junior Choir, Richard Lander School’s Wilbye Choir and Truro School’s Senior Choir. Christopher is a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists and read music at Pembroke College Cambridge, as an organ scholar. He subsequently studied with Margaret Philips at the Royal College of Music where he was a post-graduate student and a prize-winner.

Robert T. Elliott Festival Director Rob grew up in South Wales as part of a musical family. He conducted the Massed Male Choirs at the Welsh National Eisteddfod at the age of only 21 and the English National Symphony Orchestra at the Wiltshire Music Festival in 1999. He has performed in a host of venues including the Royal Albert Hall, Cardiff Castle, the NEC and Wembley; as well as the Cathedrals of Llandaff, Westminster, and Southwark. Rob has also conducted the community singing and the national anthems on several occasions at Twickenham and his own private Male Chorus performed at all the games there for the Rugby World Cup. Rob has adjudicated at many festivals and competitions throughout Britain and Europe, including The National Choral

Festival in Ireland, Isle of Man Festival of Choirs, Cornwall International Male Choral Competition, Barnardos National School Choir Competition at the Barbican and Royal Festival Hall in London, Manchester Amateur Choral Competition at the Royal Northern College of Music, Bangor International Choral Festival, Northern Ireland and The North Wales Choral Festival. Rob founded the Wessex Male Choir in 2001. Since that time, he developed the choir to win 20 trophies and to become the country’s top performing male choir cementing its success by also becoming International Male Choir Champions at the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in 2011 against some of the stiffest competition seen there for many years. Rob retired as its MD in December 2013.

He runs a very successful music teaching practice in Royal Wootton Bassett and is currently also involved in delivering choir workshops, helping conductors prepare choirs for competition and advising choirs with planning for the future. Rob took over as Festival Director in July 2015 and is honoured to have been appointed to the role for this year’s Festival.

Grass Valley Male Voice Choir Gentlemen Singers (Czech Republic) Artistic Leader: Richard Uhlíř

Grass Valley Male Voice Choir (USA) Musical Director: Eleanor Kenitzer Pianist: Cody Killian

It is a huge privilege and joy to be able to welcome this highly acclaimed, professional ensemble to the Festival for the first time. Established in 2003, the nine members sing a wide range of styles and repertoire a cappella in four parts (countertenor, tenor, baritone and bass). The Gentlemen Singers are a multi-award winning ensemble and have given more than 500 concerts in 19 countries on four continents. They have performed widely on TV and radio and sing commissioned arrangements and compositions in as many as eight parts. They undertake workshops, master classes and school education sessions and have performed with many famous conductors and orchestras.

The Grass Valley Male Voice Choir is the direct descendant of the Cornish miners’ choirs that flourished from the California Gold Rush era well into the twentieth century. Grass Valley, California, was a centre of gold mining where Cornish miners came with their hard-rock mining skills and love of singing. In the 1990s, Eleanor Kenitzer, an experienced choral conductor in the community, worked with a few of the remaining miner choir members to revive the Cornish singing tradition. The mixed Cornish Carol Choir began singing in 1990 and the Male Voice Choir started in 1997. GVMVC is active in the Nevada County musical scene with three concerts a year. In addition, their mission includes supporting local non-profit organisations and promoting the community’s Cornish heritage. Since Grass Valley and Nevada City established sister-cities in Cornwall, the group has visited Cornwall twice and hosted visiting Cornish choirs, regularly participates in regional and national Cornish reunions and performs at St. Piran’s Day celebrations. Today’s choir of forty men is still directed by Eleanor Kenitzer, a bard of the Cornish Gorsedd. It offers their audiences a broad repertoire of popular music: from Broadway, Americana and folk music to traditional Cornish songs and Holiday favourites.

Manifestum (Finland) Musical Director: Jonas Rannila Manifestum was founded in 2010. An important reason for starting a new choir was the singers’ wish to perform choral music with a classical ideal of singing. The choir performs gems from the male voice choir repertoire from various epochs and offers its audience interesting programmes – with surprises, yet without forgetting traditions. In addition to well-known compositions the choir performs works that develop the musical level of the choir. A part of this ambition is to regularly perform larger compositions. Manifestum co-operates with other actors in the field. It’s important for the choir to perform music that develops the singers technique. Under its new conductor Jonas Rannila, Manifestum has developed by leaps and bounds. In the 2015-16 term we performed Johannes Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem together with experienced ladies voices; two Christmas concerts and two concerts called ”Romantics and Modernists”. The latter included a first performance of Leif Segerstam’s composition Lokomokokomotiivi, dedicated to Manifestum. In October 2016 Manifestum performed, together with Somnium Ensemble, Carmina Burana by Carl Orff. The performance was greeted by standing ovations and very favourable press. For Christmas 2016 we prepared three performances of Camille Saint-Saëns Christmas Oratorio arranged for male voice choir.

INTERNATIONAL CHOIRS

In 1879 the HARMONIE Bernbach was founded by 13 young men who loved to sing, thus making them one of the tradition-richest choirs in the Rhein-Main area. Since 2005 the choir has been led by their Musical Director Matthias Schmitt who, every week, conveys his passion for singing in this men’s choir to his 65 amateur singers. Matthias Schmitt has received several international awards with his choirs. He was awarded a Special Award at the International Choral Festival 2016 in Cork (Ireland), two Gold Medals at the World Choirs’ Games in Riga (Latvia) in 2014, the win of the Grand Prix at the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod Festival in Wales in 2012 and the Conductor’s award at the International Johannes Brahms’ Choir Festival and Competition in Wernigerode (Germany) in 2011. The singers of the HARMONIE try to inspire their audience with choir music from various styles and eras, including Pop and Jazz and also focuses on the 19th century and contemporary compositions. In Germany, the HARMONIE has won several first prizes at national competitions. The joy of singing and having fun in a tightly-knit group are the cornerstones that define the HARMONIE Bernbach.

Roeros Sangforening (Norway) Musical Director: Lindsay Winfield- Chislett The small World Heritage site of Roeros, some 175 kilometres south of Norway’s second largest city, Trondheim, lies at an altitude of 628 metres above sea level and boasts some of the lowest winter temperatures in the land, with a record of minus 50’C. An ex copper-mining town, Roeros has a long and colourful history dating back to 1644 and remains a popular tourist destination today. Roeros Sangforening is one of the oldest male voice choirs in Norway, established in 1848, since when the choir has had its ups and downs like any other. In Autumn 2015, the choir’s present MD, british Lindsay Winfield-Chislett, took over the baton and membership is growing. It stands currently at around 25, most of whom will be attending this year’s festival. Repertoire is as varied as possible, including traditional, folk, popular and religious songs, roughly half in Norwegian and half in English. Though Lindsay was here with a different Norwegian MVC in 2009, this is Roeros Sangforening’s first visit to Cornwall. Roeros Sangforening

INTERNATIONAL CHOIRS

The Melbourne Welsh Male Choir was formed in 1984 under the leadership of Bill Mead from the Morriston Orpheus Choir. It is steeped in the Welsh choral tradition, but is still proudly Australian and has members from diverse nationalities. It has however nurtured its contacts in Wales and has the honour of having as its patron and occasional conductor Alwyn Humphries MBE. Inspired by the example of Morriston Orpheus, the choir has fostered young local singing talent for over 20 years with a ‘Singer of the Year’ Competition, for singers under 35 years, with many of the winners and finalists currently performing on the world stage. Overseas performances include Cardiff Arms Park in 1992; Atlanta, Georgia, USA in 1994; concert tours of South Africa in 1997; Canada in 2002; Wales and England, including the Royal Albert Hall, in 2008; and most recently at the Salzburg Festival and Vienna in 2014.

Bristol Male Voice Choir have developed a wide-ranging repertoire over almost 50 years. They have performed in Eastern Europe, the Carnegie Hall, New York, to the Eden Project in Cornwall and Bristol’s churches and cathedrals and have toured in Poland, Germany, the USA, Canada, France and Spain. Under their Musical Director Jo Scullin and accompanist Elaine Smith the choir constantly seek to maintain high musical standards wherever they perform.

BSMVC was founded in 1974 by Pam Jones, now Life President. Numbers have increased to over 60, with singers from all over East Devon gathering each week in Budleigh Salterton to rehearse an array of songs from a wide range of musical categories. This year has been both busy and exciting! We have had a succession of successful concerts throughout East Devon while raising about £7500 for charities. We have shared the stage with other choirs, including Barnstaple MVC, Ystrad Mynach MVC, Lympstone Military Wives and on one occasion with the SW Comms Band. We feel privileged to rehearse and perform under the expert guidance of our Musical Director, Michael Graham One of the highlights of the year was our afternoon concert at Exeter Cathedral in August. This was a new venture for us and we were delighted and surprised to sing to a large audience both in the Cathedral and afterwards on the Cathedral green. We also sang at the Cathedral in the week before Christmas as part of ‘The Big Festive Sing’ along with five other choirs and an audience of 1000! We hope and expect that our close contacts with the Cathedral will continue into 2017.

Caernarfon Male Voice Choir Musical Director: Delyth Humphreys Accompanist: Mona Meirion Richards LRAM Côr Meibion Caernarfon is one of Wales’ most successful male voice choirs, having won first prize in the National Eisteddfod of Wales a record nine times. The choir was founded in 1967 by a small group of workers at the Ferodo brake lining factory on the outskirts of the town. The factory has long since closed and the members now come from a variety of professional, skilled and manual occupations. Whatever your problem, someone in the choir can fix it! Competing in the 2017 Cornwall International Male Choral festival is one of a series of events celebrating the choir’s 50th anniversary. Côr Meibion Caernarfon has performed in some of the best concert halls in Britain, including the Royal Albert Hall, Birmingham Symphony Hall and St David’s Hall Cardiff. The choir has travelled widely in the UK, Ireland, mainland Europe and North America. Its Patron is the world famous bass baritone, Bryn Terfel. Caernarfon is the county town of Gwynedd, a stronghold of the Welsh language and home to Wales’ most famous castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Côr Meibion De Cymru - The South Wales Male Choir enjoys an envious reputation for thrilling audiences across the world with the quality of its performance. For over 30 years, with Royal Patronage of HRH The Prince of Wales, choristers from as far west as the Pembrokeshire coast and as far east as the verdant border hills, plus exiles from Avon and Oxfordshire regularly rehearse and produce a sound totally unique, but still very much in the very best Welsh Male Choir tradition. Celebrated conductors such as John Samuel, Haydn James, and D. Eifion Thomas followed founder Alun John on a music making path across the world which with current Music Director Elaine Robins and Accompanist Sian Davies now totals some 20 tours. Performing abroad is a prerequisite of the choir, with an expected European visit in 2018 and a possible major tour to Western Canada in 2020, so opportunities are great for new members to join and become true choral ambassadors. UK Concert week-ends with wives, partners and the many friends of CMDC regularly feature in the choir programme.

In 1946 the people of Llangollen had started planning a Music Festival as a way of healing worldwide wounds following the end of the Second World War. This festival, the Llangollen Eisteddfod was to be held in 1947. The young men of Froncysyllte returning home from the war wanted to participate in this eisteddfod, hence the formation of the Froncysyllte Male Voice Choir. The choir have been a competitive choir ever since. In 1977 they became the first Welsh Male Voice Choir to win at the Llangollen Eisteddfod and a month later they won at the National Eisteddfod of Wales. They have been successful in competitions throughout the UK and Europe. The most recent a first place at the Derry music Festival in 2013. In 2006 a wedding engagement resulted in the busiest 6 years in the choir’s history. A wedding guest moved by the choir’s performance set about to secure them a recording deal with Universal. They released 5 albums in 5 years. It was an exhausting, but exciting period which brought amazing concert opportunities. They are proud to have done their small part in popularising choral singing, but are content to have returned to a normal quieter schedule.

Epsom Male Voice Choir began as an evening class in 1983 and has grown in strength year on year. Under the musical directorship of Ian Assersohn the choir has extended its repertoire while retaining the special values of the Male Voice Choir tradition. A major event in the choir’s year is the annual concert at the Epsom Playhouse and again this was a sell-out occasion. In July 2016 Epsom and Ewell towns hosted choirs from France, Germany and Begium for the annual Europe in Harmony Choral Festival during which the choir sang two pieces in French to the delight of the visitors. In November 2016 the choir sang with Leatherhead Choral Society and Farnham Youth Junior Choir at the world premiere of Assersohn’s Dies Irae a cantata in 15 movements. The cantata was commissioned by Epsom Male Voice Choir and Leatherhead Choral Society to commemorate the Battle of the Somme. Reviews of the piece were glowing and the choir were extremely proud of their performance. The choir are delighted to be back at the Festival for the fourth time.

Peterborough Boys Choir Hampshire Police Male Voice Choir Musical Director: Terri Freeman Accompanist: Nigel Smith In 1940 Portsmouth received intense air-raids and Portsmouth City Police, together with wartime colleagues, spent many hours on stand-by. To raise spirits, officers began to sing together and a choir was formed. Portsmouth City Police Choir was in demand to lift morale and for fund-raising activities in the battered city. Concerts were given with the Band of the Royal Marines and invitations to broadcast soon followed. After the amalgamation of police forces in April 1967 it became the Hampshire Police Male Voice Choir, now with 60 members, retired officers and members of the community. The Choir’s charitable activities have raised many thousands of pounds for local and national organisations, also promoting Hampshire Constabulary’s Crime Prevention, Community Safety and Trading Standards messages. It has performed in the Royal Albert Hall, the former Cardiff Arms Park, Hyde Park, many Cathedrals, and taken part in joint concerts with male voice choirs around the country. It has travelled abroad on many occasions. In 2013 in Bruges, it had the privilege of singing in the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate and laying a wreath. In 2014 it had a successful tour in the Rhineland, Germany. Maelstrom Musical Director: Jeff Borradaile

Currently there are fourteen men singing in 4-part harmony ( Tenor 1, Tenor 2, Baritone or Bass ). We work on a wide range of songs including pop music and some traditional standards. The ability to read music, although desirable, is definitely not essential as song parts can be accessed from the website. Enthusiasm is at least as important as musical experience. Phoenix Choir Musical Director: John Mills The Phoenix Choir is a Welsh Male Voice Choir that has been singing with passion and pride for nine years. Building on its Welsh tradition, The Phoenix Choir takes its influences from all genres and styles. Not only do we sing music traditionally associated with Welsh Male Voice Choirs such as Myfanwy, Gwahoddiad and Men of Harlech, but our repertoire extends to classical pieces such as Nessun Dorma and modern songs by artists such as Robbie Williams, Queen, Michael Bublé and the choir’s president, Bonnie Tyler. The choir has performed at many venues, both locally and afar, including the Houses of Parliament. We have also performed with some of our local celebrities such as Ria Jones and comedian Mike Doyle. At our last annual concert, the choir performed with a local Big Band which made the event go with a swing! The choir’s music director John Mills, is a composer and arranger and has written and arranged the choir’s latest repertoire of modern pieces and songs from popular musicals. Unusually, John is also the choir’s accompanist and conducts the choir from the piano.

Rossendale Male Voice Choir

South Wales Gay Mens’ Chorus

Rossendale Male Voice Choir Musical Director: Matthew Thomas Accompanist: Michael Farnworth

South Wales Gay Men’s Chorus Musical Director: Andy Bulleyment Accompanists: Christopher Fossey and Vicky Guise

Originally established 91 years ago in Lancashire, the choir has its roots in the industrial heartland of the beautiful Rossendale Valley. Formed by the late and immensely talented Fred Tomlinson MBE, and followed by his son Ernest, himself a renowned composer, the choir grew from its humble beginnings, to win the choral festival at Llangollen on 3 occasions, and to establish itself as a real force in the highly competitive male voice choir world. The last 91 years have seen the choir travelling to perform in Holland and Ireland, with a strong twin-town connection in Bocholt, northern Germany. We have performed in French, German, Latin and Russian, and our current repertoire includes a new piece in Swahili, which is proving a different challenge altogether. For the last 12 months, the choir has greatly benefited from the guidance of its new young MD, Matthew Thomas, whose youth and enthusiasm have helped to re-energise our singers, and inject some pace and vibrancy into performances. This is our first time at the festival, and all our members are really looking forward to hearing fellow choirs and joining in with this wonderful event.

SWGMC was launched in 2008 by its current Musical Director. In the early days the choir worked on finding its voice and audiences keen to hear a new breed of male choir. It found that people wanted to hear them. Often, it seemed that people had forgotten the wonderful sound of male voices in harmony or hadn’t even heard a male choir before. As the choir became better known it found more men who had a passion for singing started coming along to rehearsals. Now the chorus is preparing to celebrate its tenth anniversary and has a busy schedule of performances. The chorus is very proud to be a part of a strong Welsh heritage and proud to be playing an active role in the local community. At the heart of the chorus is a passion for music, for expression, for fun and for connecting with friends in South Wales and across the globe. Taunton Deane Male Voice Choir Musical Director: Andy Bulleyment Accompanists: Christopher Fossey and Vicky Guise Taunton Deane Male Voice Choir has three main objectives – to preserve the traditions and standards of male voice singing, to maintain public interest in male voice choirs and to assist organisations in raising money for charitable causes. Over the 70 years of its existence the choir has performed at countless charity concerts locally and nationally. The Choir is affiliated to the National Association of Choirs and has sung with massed choirs at the Royal Albert Hall, The Evening Standard Arena in Manchester, in the World Choir in Cardiff and at V.E. Day celebrations at Hyde Park, Wells and Truro Cathedrals. The choir has sung at the Royal Albert Hall 5 times in The Festival of Brass &Voices Concert in aid of CANCER RESEARCH UK. Taunton Deane Male Voice Choir’s repertoire is extensive and varied, offering something to suit every kind of musical taste. This is the fourth time we have performed at the Cornwall International Male Voice Choral Festival.

Westerton Male Voice Choir Musical Director: Bryan Marshall Accompanist: Gillian Daly

Founded in 1975, Tenby Male Choir has, over the past 40 years, grown from strength to strength not just in chorister numbers but also in its musical reputation under the guiding light of our Music Director Ian Williams [affectionately know as “Wilbur”] and our accompanist Jill Williams [no relation]. Today, as a wellestablished Male Voice Choir in West Wales, at 50 choristers strong, the choir prides itself on the professional reputation that it has grown “From the Heart of Pembrokeshire”.

Formed in 1957 and celebrating its 60th year, Westerton Male Voice Choir is one of the busiest and most popular choirs in the Glasgow area and beyond. WMVC came about because one day in 1957 a sodden bowling green prevented members of the Westerton Bowling Club from playing. Some of the thwarted members gathered round a piano in the pavilion and were so pleased with their efforts that they decided to set up a choir. Renowned for bringing friendship, laughter and a range of rousing music to its audiences, Westerton MVC is a dynamic and versatile choir. All the singers have one thing in common – a love of music, singing and entertaining! At the heart of its singing is a cherished tradition, fund-raising for charity, which is carried out with fun, vigour and enthusiasm. From its humble beginnings in a corrugated-iron Village Hall, WMVC’s stature have grown to ensure it is one of Scotland’s leading male voice choirs. This is Westerton Male Voice Choir’s third visit to the festival and they are delighted to be back as part of their 60th birthday celebrations!

In March 2008, Garry Jones began a project to promote boys’ and young men’s singing in Warwickshire. By 2010 the Warwickshire County Boys’ Choir had grown to nearly 100 singers and the more advanced Warwickshire Choristers was formed from a nucleus of around 50, which has now increased to 80. Both choirs draw singers from schools right across the county and uphold a firm principle of open access, without auditions. The Choristers have competed successfully in Choir of the Year (national finalists in 2010, choir of the day on each occasion since), Music for Youth and, in 2011, The Cornwall International Male Choral Festival. They have also toured successfully to France, Belgium, Germany and Portugal, and produced 3 CDs. The Warwickshire County Male Voices were formed in 2012, building upon the success of the Warwickshire County Boys and Choristers. The aim of the choir was to encourage more young male voice singing. In 2016 they won the prestigious Manchester Amateur choirs competition and in 2013 they were featured in BBC Radio 3’s ‘The Choir’. The group sings in up to six parts, performing a wide variety of musical styles, and membership is open to all boys and young men whose voices are going through the transition. The choir’s repertoire is carefully selected to support and guide them through that process, and a first CD was made in 2015. In 2016, Garry Jones handed over the directorship of the three choirs to a team of enthusiastic young conductors including Benjamin Hamilton, Daniel Galbreath and Alexander Leadbeater, supported by accompanist Julian Grimshaw. It is this team which is supporting their attendance and competition during the 2017 festival.

Wessex Male Choir Wessex Male Choir Musical Director: Rhiannon Williams-Hale Accompanist: Christine Williams We were founded in 2001 by Robert T. Elliott and rapidly earned a reputation for entertaining performances and musical excellence, gaining numerous trophies and successes in a relatively short period of time, including winning the Llangollen International Eisteddfod Male Choir Trophy in 2011. At the beginning of 2014, Katrine Reimers took over as musical director and built on the excellent foundations laid by our founder. Katrine left us in July 2016 to take up choral teaching opportunities across Europe and our new Musical Director joined us in September 2015. We are based in Swindon, Wiltshire, and have an active membership of about 50. We enjoy a lively events programme, which has included everything from festivals, overseas tours (most recently to the Republic of Ireland and Northern Italy), regular performances in London, flash-mobs, and outdoor events (we have performed at Twickenham and Wembley stadia in front crowds of more than 70,000), as well as making occasional television appearances on the BBC. We are keen supporters of local and national charities, notably having raised over £60,000 for Parkinson’s UK over the years. We have released three CDs: ‘Men in Black’, ‘Shades of Wessex’, and ‘It’s Christmas!’ with the music available for download online.

Wyndham Singers Musical Director: Charles West The Wyndham Singers is a male singing group of about 25 voices - all of whom are from the village of Kentisbeare and the Culm Valley area in Devon, UK. The Wyndham Singers were formed in the autumn of 2003 with the objective of raising funds for local charities through the enjoyment of singing Christmas carols and music in local pubs. Under the direction of Alan Boxer and latterly Charles West the Singers have proved so popular with their audiences and their membership that we have significantly extended our repertoire and now perform 10 to 15 charity concerts throughout the year. We perform mostly in the Culm Valley / Exeter area though have ventured as far afield as Wales and Cornwall. The Singers have raised about £100,000 for their chosen charities in the last thirteen years.

When a quartet got together in 1921, they could hardly have envisaged that their efforts would be remembered and rewarded with a 70 strong male voice choir still attracting large audiences 95 years later. Much has changed over our 95 years. Our choristers are now drawn from miles around, and many great arrangements of modern songs added to the repertoire. But even more has stayed the same. Our motto ‘Serving the Community’is as valid now as it ever was. We still love getting together with other male voice choirs in festivals, celebrations and simple togetherness. The Welsh hymns are as popular as ever provided they don’t swamp the programme. And there is a great tradition of loyalty; many members have been in the choir for well over 20 years and some for over 40 years. Our much loved Musical Director Christine Best, who died in 2012, spent 45 years with us as accompanist, then as MD. With our young, enthusiastic and innovative MD Jonathan Kilhams and with long-serving Mike Wood as our patient and goodhumoured accompanist, we are poised again for a wonderful few years ahead. Entertainment remains our goal, but it has to be well sung.

Buccas Four Musical Director: Stephen Lawry Buccas Four, from Newlyn, comprises Charles Parke, Graham Warren, David Williams and Stephen Lawry. They began singing together in August 2001. The quartet sings all around Cornwall and loves to sing as guests of choirs, as well as giving concerts in their own right. They present a wide variety of music, thoroughly enjoy singing together and responding to receptive audiences wherever they go. Buccas Four usually manages a tour away once a year, either into England or further afield. The ensemble’s most recent tour was a very successful visit to Bournemouth with the male voice choir there. They have also enjoyed tours in Ireland and Brittany. Although they sing a capella they are assisted by June Stevens, who patiently note-bashes with them week by week! Burraton Male Voice Choir Musical Director: Phil Taylor Accompanist: Paul Fry The Choir was formed in 1964 and our current MD, who commenced his association with the choir in 1974 is now in his 43rd year. Together the Choir has given well over 800 concerts in that time and raised many thousands of pounds for Churches, Chapels and many Charities. The Choir is a founder member of the Federation of Male Voice Choirs and is also affiliated to the Festival of Male Voice Praise. Many special memories exist from concerts given in and around Cornwall and Devon and we are always delighted to join forces with other Male and Ladies Choirs, brass bands and orchestras. The Choir has also been thrilled to combine with other Choirs at the Royal Albert Hall, Plymouth Pavilions and the Hall for Cornwall. The Choir is delighted to have forged a link with St. Germans CP School giving annual combined concerts where much needed funds are raised for various charities. We also try to include / encourage young musicians in our programme so as to provide a platform for performance in front of large audiences.

Celtic Male Ensemble City of Truro Male Choir Musical Director: Russell Pascoe Accompanist: Martin Davies The Choir was born out of Chacewater Carnon Vale Male Choir when its practice venue moved to the City in 2003.The earlier name derived from the village choirs of Chacewater and Carnon Downs, which were formed in the 1940s and combined in 1991. We will be celebrating 75 years of continuous singing later this year. Over the years, the choirs have had numerous Musical Festival successes, both in and out of the County, including our first competition foray into the Cornwall International Male Choral Festival, in May 2013. In 2015 at the Cornwall Music Festival, we won three cups including the Edgar Kessell Gold Cup for the best choir performance. Last year we sang at the Tregothnan Garden Party and in front of Truro Cathedral. We also hosted Ardudwy Choir from Wales, Mabe Ladies from Cornwall and sang at five charity events. We visited Gloucester at the end of September to sing with Churchdown MVC We were absolutely delighted last year to welcome the talent of Russell Pascoe as our new Musical Director. As well as a well published international composer he is also currently Deputy Musical Director of Truro Choral Society as well as a Cornish Bard.

Four Lanes Male Choir Musical Director: Tim Hosken Accompanist: Ruth Wetherall

Formed in 2008, Cornwall Boys Choir is an auditioned treble voice choir for boys from the age of 10 through to the time their voice changes. It rehearses locally in ‘satellite rehearsal groups’ based in Penzance, Truro, St Austell and Callington. Managed by local singing leaders, these groups draw their membership from the surrounding primary and secondary schools. Full choir rehearsals take place monthly when the boys meet, sing, socialise and consume vast quantities of cake! CBC performs across the county, regularly with Cornish male choirs and occasionally on local radio and TV. They were featured in 2008 on ‘Songs of Praise’ and performed as part of the mass children’s choir in the BBC TV Children in Need broadcast in November 2014. The choir is administered and funded by Cornwall Music Education Hub.

Four Lanes Male Choir’s home is in the village of Four Lanes, near Redruth, in Cornwall. The choir was formed in 1944 to welcome home troops from the Second World War and we are proud to say that over the years we have been able, through our very talented musical directors, including Ronald Brown, Alastair Taylor and Michael Uren, to sing choral music to the highest standards. Our current musical director, Tim Hosken, also demands excellence in choir singing and in this he is very ably supported by our accompanist, Ruth Wetherall. Now in our 72nd year, our membership is over 60 men of all ages, from 18 to 80 plus and we are privileged to be able to play our part in keeping the tradition of male voice singing alive in Cornwall. Our choir enjoys festivals and competition and has had considerable success in winning many cups and trophies as the best competing choir. A marked feature of Four Lanes Male Choir is a commitment to communmity singing and the Cornish choral tradition. The sentiment is conveyed in our motto ‘Sing we for pleasure - for one and all’

Cornwall Cambiata Musical Director: Angela Renshaw Accompanist: Angus Webster The choir is aimed specifically at encouraging boys whose voices are changing, to sing. Initially funded by Cornish Arts organisation FEAST, the group is still funded by local groups. The late Dennis Arbon was a very generous sponsor. Cornwall Cambiata is not a conventional choir. Boys are selected to sing in local school groups, geared towards a specific performance. Membership fluctuates which is both invigorating and unique. The choir aims to provide large scale performance opportunities and encourage new audiences to enjoy a diverse repertoire specifically tailored for the group. We are proud of our musical Cornish heritage and this forms the backbone of the repertoire with works from Cornish composers (e.g. Russell Pascoe, who is also a leader of the group). The choir has performed in the Hall for Cornwall, Truro Cathedral, the Royal Albert Hall (twice) and has featured in ‘The Choir’ on BBC 3.

The group was formed, originally as an octet, more than 20 years ago and has since grown to its present number of 15, thus enabling it to expand its repertoire and tackle some more complex music. The group has sung in Southern Ireland, South Wales, taken part in the Morlaix Music Festival, as well as twice competing successfully in the Bournemouth Music festival, winning the Folk Song Class in 2006 and in 2010 The Male Choir Class. It also won the under 40 voices class in the 2009 Cornwall International Male Voice Choral Festival and in the same year received an award from The Cornish Gorsedd as “The Best Light Music Group”. It has also provided some backing for a recent Christmas single by Ralph McTell. The group was placed second in the under 40 voices class in the 2013 CIMVC Festival, and adjudged best overall Cornish Choir in the competition. This year, they have been invited to perform an Arts Council commissioned piece of music to celebrate the historic sounds of King Edward Mine-the oldest and best preserved tin mine in Cornwall

This well-known choir was formed in 1940 at the Climax Rock Drill and Engineering Works at Pool, Redruth, after two men, Jack Curry and Trevor Bray were working on the factory roof and saw the glow of the fires at Plymouth following the wartime bombing. Their aim was to raise money to alleviate the distress of the Plymouth victims. Within a short time Edgar Kessell MBE commenced as the Musical Director. Upon the retirement of Edgar Kessell in 1972, after 32 years, George Smith directed the Choir for eighteen years until he retired in 1990. Roger Wills then took over the baton until retirement from the position in 2008. Angela Renshaw then became the choir’s musical director until she retired in 2014 and the choir is now delighted to have as its musical director Andrew Thomas. Over the years the choir has promoted Cornish male voice singing in Cornwall and on tours to England, Wales, France, Germany, Spain and the USA. Originally known as CLIMAX Male Voice Choir, the name HOLMAN was added to its title during the late 1960s to reflect the change in the companies. Sadly the companies whose names the choir bears have ceased to exist.

The original choir was formed in 1944 in the village of St Keverne on the Lizard peninsula. Members were drawn from the local quarrying and associated industries with the idea of raising funds to help returning Second World War servicemen. The catchment area has expanded over the years and the 30 plus singers today come mainly from the Camborne, Redruth, Helston and Lizard area. Although the choir rehearses weekly in Helston, it retains close links with its’ roots in St Keverne and has a full programme of concerts and draws audiences from around the region. The choir is proud of the continuing part it plays in the musical tradition of Cornwall with several members recording over 50 years service with the choir.

Established in 2008 by the amalgamation of the former ECC Engineers and the St Austell Male Voice Choir, the choir has its roots in the world famous china clay industry centered in St Austell and the surrounding villages, where for over 250 years, china clay has been mined by generations of local families and transported all over the world to be used in the manufacture of a huge range of everyday products, especially ceramics, paper, paint and plastics. Throughout its history there has been a consistent presence of male voice singing within the china clay industrial landscape. Today the industry is led by Imerys Minerals Ltd and the choir is proud to have the company’s support in continuing this long cherished tradition of male voice singing in the mid Cornwall area. Having participated in the competition on previous years, we focus this year on hosting one of the regional festival gala concerts and look forward to welcoming other choirs to these splendid venues.

Kerrier Male Choir Liskerret Male Voice Choir Musical Director: Judith Pinguey Accompanists: Heather Taylor Liskerret Male Voice Choir was formed in 1993 by current President Norman Pampling and 8 other local enthusiasts .Based in Liskeard they draw members from a wide area of East Cornwall and have enjoyed considerable success over the years, with various combinations of musical team and personnel. In pursuit of their love of male harmony singing they have travelled widely throughout the United Kingdom, including some very prestigious venues, as well as the many concerts performed for charity within the county. The Choir is currently undergoing a period of rebuilding, with about 20 very enthusiastic members under the baton of Judith Pinguey and are proud to represent Liskeard in the 2017 International Festival.

Formed in 1904 and reputedly the oldest male choir in Cornwall, Marazion Apollo Male Choir is based in the ancient charter town of Marazion, close to Penzance and faces the jewel in the Cornish crown, St Michael’s Mount This is the island castle home of our president Mr James St.Aubyn, whose family owned the castle from the date of the restoration of the monarchy in 1660 until 1954 when it was given to the National Trust by the 3rd Lord St. Levan, together with a large endowment. The family continues to lease accommodation within the castle from the National Trust. The choir has a long and distinguished history, including winning the Male Voice Choir Advance Class and Championship Cup at the 2009 St Austell Music Festival. The choir has performed in Ireland, California, Brittany, Wales, as well as singing across the length and breadth of the County. In September 2010, the choir recorded a 3 track CD to raise money for Help for Heroes. The Choir’s Musical Director is Kate Wood-Cattran. Kate joined the choir in April 2013 and this is her first appointment as MD of a male voice choir.

The choir was formed in 1971 at Carnglaze Caverns near St Neot which remains its home parish. Loveny took its name from the river Loveny which flows through St Neot, the colour of its uniform reflecting the colour of the river and of the cavern slate. Initially the choir sang traditional Cornish carols, but its repertoire soon diversified and Loveny quickly became strong and very successful, raising may thousands of pounds for charities throughout the South West and appearing on TV and radio. Loveny won the St Stythians Cup at the 7th CIMVCF in 2015, for the best Cornish choir of up to 40 singers. It has an individual approach, setting out to entertain its audiences as well as retaining traditional male voice singing. It is also a very social and fun-loving choir and is very well supported by its ladies. Loveny frequently tours in the UK and abroad and recently (July 2016) came back from a most successful tour of Brittany. The choir has benefitted from a series of very talented MDs and pianists who have built the ‘Loveny Sound’ through its history; despite more change in 2016 the Sound continues as strong as ever.

Still glowing in its sucess of its tour of Cyprus last October, Mevagissey Male Choir has entered 2017 in as strong a shape as ever. Now well into its 43rd year, the choir currently has approaching 60 members and is increasingly proud of its broad ranging repertoire, which, it believes has been the cornerstone of its continuing success and popularity. Formed by 16 local men in the humble surroundings of Percy Mitchell’s boatyard in November 1974, the choir has gone on to perform in many prestigious venues such as the Royal Albert Hall and Westminster Abbey (where it is believed to be the only male choir to have sung three times). It has sung on board ‘The World’ and more locally with Ralph McTell at the Eden Project; with Hayley Westenra at Truro Cathedral and three times at Cornwall’s world renowed Minack Theatre. Along the way it has raised tens of throusands of pounds for good causes. The choir has also travelled extensively abroad to the USA, Canada, France, Germany, Holland, Ireland, Gibraltar and Madeira, as well of course Cyprus. However the choir is ever conscious of its roots and every Monday evening in August it performs free concerts on the Mevagissey quayside for tourists and locals alike.

Mousehole are delighted to be participating in the Festival once again. 2017 brings plenty of excitement for the choir, with many concerts around Cornwall and a tour to Brittany in July. Last year venues included Exeter Cathedral (twice), Bournemouth and Barnstaple. As well as giving 25 to 30 concerts each year the men also sing socially after practices and on several great nights out through the calendar! CDs have captured some of Mousehole’s changing and developing repertoire as the 80 plus members work to maintain and improve standards in their singing. The practice room is an enjoyable place to be and visitors are always welcome. Founded in 1909, proud to be Cornish and delighted to promote male voice singing wherever they can, the men of Mousehole are happy to sing together whether it is on the harbourside at Mousehole in one of their open air events through the summer or in their annual ‘special’ concerts at St Mary’s Church in Penzance on the first Sunday in August and at Paul Church for a wonderful Christmas celebration. We look forward to meeting old friends and making new ones during the Festival. Nankersey Male Choir Musical Director: Elaine Tangye Accompanist: Michael Uren/Clive Ellison Founded in 1950, mainly by men from the pretty little fishing village of Flushing, near Falmouth, the choir now numbers almost 60 members who also hail from other towns and villages in nearby west Cornwall. Today Nankersey is one of the best known and respected male voice choirs in Cornwall and beyond. The Choir’s mottos reads “To Sing for and to Give pleasure”, which is something they continue to do; having raised several thousands of pounds for local and national charities, organisations and projects. History highlights have included BBC Songs of Praise”; “Highway”; Hampton Court Flower Show; the Royal Yacht Britannia; the Royal Albert Hall (with massed Cornish choirs); this festival; the Royal Cornwall Show and the Fal River Festival.

Praze Hayle Male Choir

A male voice choir was formed in Newquay in 1947 but this choir disbanded in 1956 and was not replaced until the 20th November 1974 when ‘Newquay Male Voice Choir’ held its first practice under the direction of Mr Morley Trethewey. Three members from this time still sing with the choir. Under the direction of Judith Pinguey the Choir developed into a forward-looking choir full of life and energy and determined to share their enthusiasm for singing with all those they meet. Under their present Musical Director Richard Braebrook and assistant M.D. and accompanist Chris Bennett, they are producing a refreshed, reinvigorated Newquay MVC sound which has already excited and entertained audiences locally and further afield on their recent tours to Yorkshire and Dorset. The choir continues its close involvement with the local community, attending schools and performing for the elderly and disabled in the area. The choir is delighted to be able to participate in the Cornwall International Male Choral Festival as it has done since its inception. It values and enjoys the unique opportunities it offers to meet, share with and learn from, male choral groups from around the world.

Newquay Male Voice Choir Musical Director: Richard Braebrook Accompanist: Chris Bennett

Pelynt is a village near Looe in South East Cornwall and was the home of Bishop Trelawny on whom the famous ‘ Trelawny’ is based. We are proud to call ourselves ‘Trelawny’s Men’. Pelynt Male Choir celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2016. We are very ably led by our Musical Director John Trethewey who has done 20 years of service and Barry Jay our accompanist who has been with us for 28 years. The choir has 35 members. We perform 25-30 concerts a year mostly helping to raise funds for local charities but also travel further afield for an annual weekend away. Notable away trips have been to Scotland, Brittany, Canterbury and many other areas of England. We encourage the younger generation to sing by performing regular concerts with the local school choir and we also entertain in local residential and nursing homes especially at Christmas. Praze Hayle Male Choir Musical Director: Tim Hosken Accompanist: Margaret Bilkey The choir was formed in early 2006 by the merger of Praze and Hayle male voice choirs. Praze was established in 1923 and Hayle in 1978. Both choirs were successful in a number of music festivals and tours and participated in massed choir concerts in Cornwall and at larger venues such as the Royal Albert Hall. With the new name came a new visual identity with green blazers sporting a new badge which combined parts of those from the previous choirs. The choir is committed to a strong programme of concerts, weddings and other local events. The repertoire of the two former choirs has been successfully combined and expanded.

I am delighted to be an Honorary Patron of the fabulous, Cornwall International Male Choral Festival. This incredible event brings together male choirs from all over the world and celebrates singing in a unique and glorious way. What better thing is there in all the world than to sing together!

St Stythians Male Voice Choir Musical Director: Ken Downing Accompanist: Kathryn Downing

We are based in the twin fishing villages of Kingsand and Cawsand on the Rame Peninsula in Cornwall’s “Forgotten Corner”. Established in 1976, we have one surviving founder member and most performances are for charity. Last year the Cornish Federation of MVCs honoured us with the President’s Plate, presented annually to the choir which has done most to involve its wider community in male voice singing. Some 40 members rehearse every Wednesday (7.30pm) in Kingsand Community Hall where we welcome visitors and new members. Our repertoire ranges from opera to rock, show tunes, sacred music, and traditional Cornish. We also operate a folk and sea shanty group whose main charity is Shelterbox. Our cds, which include work arranged by Liz, have received radio exposure.

Founded in 1947, the choir are celebrating their 70th Anniversary and have an exciting and varied programme of events planned throughout this year. They are a founder member of the Cornwall Federation of Male Voice Choirs and have participated in all five massed Cornish Choir concerts at the Royal Albert Hall, London and most recently, in the Plymouth Pavilions. The Choir sings throughout Cornwall and beyond, singing a variety of music and providing something for everyone to enjoy in each of their programmes. 2015 - 2016 were very successful years for the choir, competing in local competitions becoming County Champions in 2016. The choir has taken part in all six Cornwall International Male Choral Festivals and is looking forward to participating again this year. They would like to thank their sponsors, JC Williams Ltd (Furnishers) of Helston for their continued support.

Situated in the far west of Cornwall, the choir formed in 1940, was conducted by Hugh Rowe father of Cornish comedian Jethro. Their original purpose was to raise money to send Red Cross parcels to prisoners of war. Our 75th anniversary concert in December 2015 was a great success, with the proceeds again going to the Red Cross. We have sung all over Cornwall and beyond, including the chapel at the Tower of London and the Mansion House. Under the sensitive direction of Becky Lovegrove, accompanied by Connie Keast, we continue to sing for local charities and have strong links with the RNLI station at Sennen Cove, where there is a concert on the quay every August. We sing for the sheer joy of singing and the good company of each other.

Tamar Valley Male Voice Choir Musical Director: Rosemary Cole Accompanist: David Crocker Affiliated to the Cornish Federation of Male Voice Choirs, the choir was founded in 2006 with just 9 members. Now having almost 40 members, the choir undertakes a very full programme of successful concerts which includes the traditional male voice repertoire and more modern compositions both sacred and secular. The choir raises money for local charities and last year raised in excess of £12,000. A choir tour is organized each year with places visited including the Czech Republic, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. Plans to visit France are well in hand. The choir loves to sing with local choirs and to arrange reciprocal visits. We are very pleased to have taken part in the concert of massed Cornish choirs at the Royal Albert Hall in 2013 and again at the Plymouth Pavilions in 2016. We are delighted to have local television personality Justin Leigh as our President and the success of the choir is, to a great extent, due to the dedication and hard work of our Director of Music Rosemary Cole. As well as keeping us in line musically, Rosemary writes and arranges music specifically for the choir.

Under the expert guidance of its Musical Director and accompanist, the choir is looking to the future, widening its repertoire and attracting new members. It is not only the enjoyment of singing that keeps the choir together but also the camaraderie. As choir members say, “We take our singing seriously, but not each other!

Formed by Edgar Kessell in 1936 in the small Cornish village of Treverva, their 80th Anniversary concert in Truro Cathedral proved outstandingly successful. The Choir has undertaken concert tours in California, Belgium, Holland and the UK and has achieved successes at the Llangollen International Eisteddfod, the Welsh Mining Festival, Huddersfield, Blackpool, Cheltenham and in its home county of Cornwall. They have performed in St. Paul’s Cathedral, the Royal Albert Hall; Wells, Gloucester and Truro Cathedrals and by way of a change, in a Jumbo Jet, 37,000 feet above the Atlantic; 700 feet down a Cornish tin mine recording Christmas carols for the BBC in Wookey Hole Cave; at the Royal Agricultural Show in Stoneleigh; on a tall ship taking part in the Tall Ships Race starting at Falmouth; on a fishing trawler for the BBC during filming and at Trebah Gardens; Cornwall as part of the 2014 TV series “Glorious Gardens From Above.” It has also appeared on “Songs of Praise” recorded at Coverack by BBC World Service.

Wadebridge Male Voice Choir was formed in 1920 and is one of the oldest in Cornwall. At a time when some choirs are struggling to attract new members the choir continues to grow with over 50 regular choristers. This is largely due to the friendliness of the members and the accomplished musical direction of MD Paul Mitchell who continues to improve the quality of the pieces and extend the repertoire for all tastes. This is best evidenced by the choir’s free summer concerts on the picturesque Padstow Harbour side, where regularly the audience includes teenagers who are surprised to hear the choir sing modern up beat numbers. Of course traditional male voice pieces are not forgotten and are still a part of most programmes. The choir’s accompanists throughout the year are Gill Gowan and Grahame Lee. In March 2016 the choir entered the Wadebridge Music Festival and were judged as the best performing choir and rated as ‘Outstanding’ (the highest category available).

Truro School Boys Barbershop Musical Director: Gareth Churcher Directed by Gareth Churcher this young and diverse Truro School boys group sings in many different genres and although their repertoire is often light hearted and entertaining, they demonstrate a serious and genuine commitment to the music. They have already chalked up many years of singing and performing experience between them. Most of the boys also sing in the School’s Chamber Choir and were former boy choristers at Truro Cathedral. During the last few years the Barbershop has been involved in a number of concerts ranging from the School’s annual Hall for Cornwall concert, to the Music for Youth Festival and Cornwall Music Festival in Truro Methodist Church, as well as many school concerts.

Experience the lifestyle you’ll be singing our praises

Purchasing a retirement apartment from McCarthy & Stone is about more than just bricks and mortar. It’s about the community benefits that the Homeowner’s Lounge brings, and tailored events to suit your interests. Much like when we invited former Wales Rugby Union international Shane Williams MBE to sing along with the Dunvant RFC Male Choir at our launch event for our Morriston, Wales development. The choir were encouraged to stay around after their performance for tea and cakes, and to relax with the homeowners. This sense of community is one of the key elements that our customers pinpoint about our developments and one of the reasons why you and your family can relax in the knowledge that you are safe and secure this year.
