Australia’s BEST LOGISTICS & TRANSPORT PROFESSIONALS

INVOLVE | INFORM | DEVELOP | RECOGNISE

February 2016 Newsletter From the Chairman Innovation, Influence & Internationalism Much emphasis has been given in recent times to the need for Australia to be innovative. Indeed the emphasis has been expressed as an imperative to enable the continuing prosperity of Australia. The call for innovation comes from the current Prime Minister – perhaps seeking to be known as the ‘innovation prime minister’ as distinct from his predecessor who sought the title of ‘infrastructure prime minister’. It is not the case that innovation and infrastructure are mutually exclusive agendas – both are fundamental to national well-being. Indeed innovation can be considered to be a form of ‘soft’ infrastructure – a prerequisite to many things such as being smarter in the provision of ‘hard’ infrastructure such as that relating to logistics and transport. But how is innovation best achieved? In essence it is about people and influence? Initially it requires ‘people to assimilate influence’ – to be receptive to ideas and ideologies outside of their particular paradigm. To invite then explore the many and varied perspectives that abound in different industries, cultures and locations. This can occur through professional networking with others from outside of one’s more usual domain. Some degree of formality and structure can be afforded to such networking through conferences, webinars and so on. Then, having acquired a sense of something potentially innovative it requires ‘people to disseminate influence’ – to promote and progress the idea. Indeed an idea not shared and so not developed and actioned is but nothing! Hence, innovation is best served by having ‘people to assimilate influence’ and ‘people to disseminate influence’. And this best occurs by having them actively participate in the international context. This is ‘the’ place where Australia must compete. Not necessarily in an overt ‘win-lose’ way but rather in effecting ‘win-win’ productive partnerships – to be an integral player in global supply-chains that are underpinned by excellence in logistics and transport. The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) in Australia is very much about innovation that promotes the national interest. Our core business is to enable the professional development of those in the logistics and transport industries. We conduct many and varied professional networking activities and recognise excellence through annual awards. Of particular note, we are an integral part of a long-standing and highly regarded international organisation – CILT International. A key aspect being the annual convention – held at a different location each year. Australia has an enviable record of participating in this event. This year it is to be held in Montreal Canada: http://www.ciltinternational.org/analysis-events/linking-north-america-to-the-world/ I encourage you to be there – as a person to ‘assimilate and disseminate influence’. Dr Neville Binning FCILT (Life) National Chairman CILT Australia

Zebra launches new device that boosts efficiency and reduces worker fatigue Zebra Technologies is launching its latest lightweight enterprise mobile computer, the TC8000, which is proven to increase productivity and reduce worker fatigue. The new Android-based computer can increase efficiency in warehouse settings by an average of 14 per cent based on workflow. The device offers an innovative ergonomic design featuring leading-edge technology that contributes to an extra hour of productivity per worker per shift without disrupting existing IT systems. It is a third lighter than traditional mobile computers and removes the need for ‘tilt and verify’ movements in the wrist. Warehouses continue to evolve into tightly integrated profit centres as companies increasingly rely on analytics to drive business decisions. The TC8000 will help warehouse workers be more efficient and deliver more accurate information, ultimately helping businesses operate more profitably. Capable of working in warehouses, third-party logistics, manufacturing, and back-of-store retail environments, the TC8000 can cover price audits, inventory management, voice-directed picking, supplyline replenishment, store receiving, and warehouse management. Measuring 233mm x 76mm x 64mm, the 490g device offers a triple-shift battery and is compatible with Zebra’s hands-free proximity scanner in a handheld device and Zebra’s SimulScan Document Capture. The TC8000 also automatically updates Terminal Emulation screens into graphics-based All-touch Terminal Emulation screens without the need for back-end system modification. Running the Android 4.4.3 (KitKat) operating system, the device features a colour touchscreen and is able to withstand drops from 2.4m to concrete. Local availability details will be announced in the coming weeks. For further information contact Raj Dooblah, Zebra Solutions Manager - Transportation & Logistics: Rajesh.doolabh@zebra.com

When the Polar Bear hits the Simpson Desert! 4 Cool Tips for Managers to help their staff when Working in a Freezer and Living in an Oven! In the real world extremely cold climates are usually separated from very hot climates by a very long car drive or a flight in a cramped seat with a budget airline! However, in the world of working in the refrigerated or cold chain industry here in Australia, the two climates are separated by only a couple of very expensive doorways. To watch video version click here http://productiveminds.com.au/2016/01/working-in-a-freezer/ Remember the body shock when you left a Melbourne winter and stepped outta the plane and onto the tarmac at Bali’s Denpasar airport? Well it’s the same except you’ve just finished your shift in a huge subzero fridge, and now you’re walking to your car on a 38 degree day and the inside of the car is topping 55 degrees which could cook an egg on your dashboard no problemo! You know this is hard on your body….you can feel it! So it’s smart to take precautions to make the transition from the arctic cold to the desert heat! 1. Take Proper Precautions INDOORS. Being able to safely re-enter the outdoors starts with taking proper care of yourself when you are indoors. Take care to protect extremities like hands, ears, head, and feet. Move around frequently because circulation is slowed in extremely cold temperatures. If you’re glued to a forklift most of the day, do what the paraplegic Olympians do in their wheel chairs- wiggle often! Lift your butt of the seat often and get that blood circulating. When able get off your machine and stretch even if it’s only for a few seconds- your back will love you….remember you’re got a long life ahead of you. 2. Layer, Layer, Layer, just like Lasagne! Not only do layers of clothing help keep you warm, they also make it easier for you to gradually remove layers as your body begins to warm up. 3. Stay Hydrated. We tend to think of the need to hydrate only in hot temperatures, but your body actually needs extra fluids in both the extreme cold and the heat. There are lots of little “themos” like drink containers that can keep drinks warm and can fit into your pocket or storage tray in the forklift. Drink cooler as you go back outdoors. Your body will better be able to absorb cool, as opposed to cold fluids, so resist the urge to down an ice packed beverage immediately upon going back into the heat. 4. “Slow and Steady” said the Tortoise. After being in frigid temps for hours, it can be tempting to rush out into the warmth of the sun and “get some rays“. However a fast switch from hold to hot can “freak out” the body, especially if you are prone to low blood pressure. Fainting in the carpark is not very glamorous! Instead, spend some time in a climate controlled room (maybe it’s the locker room or staff room) to allow your body to slowly warm up before being shocked by the baking heat of the outdoors. Overcoming Major Challenges in the Food Supply Chain Book Review & Purchase Offer The food sector has changed rapidly in the past decade. The style of retail environments, the technology advancements in tracking, operations management and packaging have made it possible to import a food item from any part of the world at the right quality specifications. Yet, it needs a lot of effort to create capability within the system and meet regulatory requirements to manage international trade. One factor that plays a very important role in the success or failure of a food supply chain is ‘food safety’. Recent cases have demonstrated how it can go horribly wrong if food safety is not taken seriously. Food fraud and food crime are important topics being discussed in the West since the horsemeat scandal, leading to policy discussions and an investigation into methods to stop it. Moreover, food supply chains are becoming increasingly complex. For example, fish caught in the North Sea or off the western coast of the United States is frozen and shipped to China where it is defrosted, filleted, packed and refrozen before reaching retail shelves in Europe and the United States. The only reason for the supply chain being this complicated is to save on operating costs, but this also brings more risks into the chain. A major discussion worldwide concerns food security and the capability of feeding nine billion people in 2050. Many initiatives have been formed to try to find a viable solution to the challenge. As the developed world looks towards utilizing local produce and creating local supply chain capabilities for regional economic development, the initiatives in the developing world are directed towards building the capability of the farmer. Sustainability within the supply chain has garnered a lot of attention. Considering the triple bottom line concept, the food sector needs to work hard on the social front, which will provide incentives to producers and processors to maintain environmental bottom lines which will provide economic sustainability in the long term. Scarcity of arable land and water, and uncertain climatic patterns, put a lot of stress on the food system. With the growth of the food industry come unique logistics challenges, new supply routes, demand dynamics and investment re-shaping the future of the food logistics industry. It is therefore important for the food industry to innovate both with regards to demand management and sustainability of food sources for a growing population. Samir Dani’s award winning book Food Supply Chain Management and Logistics provides an accessible and comprehensive guide to food supply chain management, considering the food supply chain from 'farm' to 'fork'. This book:  Considers the challenges and supporting mechanisms to ensure that the food reaching our plates is safe  Shows how to stay ahead of the game by keeping abreast of global best practice  Features global case studies from real life companies, including Nestlé, CocaCola, PepsiCo, and Cadburys “The food and drink supply chain is a complex place, and the inherent risks are many. Samir has provided an insightful overview of these, supported by relevant case studies, to make this an essential text for anyone involved in food and drink production and distribution” (Steve Osborn, Principal Consultant, The Aurora Ceres Partnership Ltd.)
