WELCOME FROM THE DIRECTOR For the fourth time we are bringing together sound and visual artists with scientists and creative technologists to engage in a dialogue framed by the ENTER festival. This time we are all addressing an intriguing theme of adaptation, ranging from biological sciences, complexity studies and research in artificial intelligence to global issues of high-speed urbanization and massive-scale social networking. The festival is a great opportunity for personal meetings and time for productive exchanges of ideas. Spreading over the whole week, from Saturday to Saturday, the programme of exhibitions, performances, debates, presentations and workshops taking place in such great venues as new centre for contemporary art DOX, French Institute or MeetFactory, is full of surprises and extraordinary artistic achievements that take the risk of positioning themselves at the intersection of art and science. Moreover, the festival is scheduled to run in parallel and collaboration with Science beyond Fiction: The European Future Technologies Conference (FET09), organized by the FET scheme of the European Commission, which we think renders this Prague art/science gathering truly outstanding. It is my pleasure to share a statement with you that ENTER festival has evolved into a landmark event in the Czech cultural scene being the leading presentational platform for frontier technological arts research. It continues to play a vital role in introducing Czech artists within the international context as well as confronting Prague audience with creativity and innovation that challenges stereotypical views of what art is, should and will be.

We, on the side of organizers, mainly a team of energetic young curators, researchers, arts managers, artists and scientists associated with the International Centre for Art and New Technologies (CIANT), but also a great number of invited collaborators from all over Europe and beyond, including the National Museum of Contemporary Art – Athens and cultural initiatives such as CO-ME-DI-A, e.mobility, European Tele-Plateaus, HAIP goes Hype, IMMEDIATE or X-OP, we all believe that democratization of and access to emerging and future technologies is a key factor in advancement of understanding of human nature and the overall development of our society, not only art. Moreover, we think it is essential to give voice to and create still more platforms for experimental interdisciplinary practices that have no fear of software, hardware and other modern tricks of present day networked communities. The festival is a multisource output of what we have been researching, developing and creating within the last few months: all the artworks are fresh, sometimes even in progress. However, they act as signals for contemporary reflection on arts as they provoke urgent questions including the one about the role and place of art in early 21st century globalized and networked world. I would like to thank all ENTER participants, partners, and supporters for all the efforts in making Prague once again a unique place for broadening definitions and bringing light > electricity > contemporary technologies: where needed. Pavel Smetana, Director of CIANT

PSYCHOTIK ROOM

DARDEX–MORT2FAIM COLLECTIVE Psychotik Room is an interactive installation where the viewer is immersed in a psychiatric isolation room with 3D glasses. By dint of infrared sensors and heartbeats sensors, the 3D environment and sound are modified in real time. This installation questions relationship between new media‘s immersion, and social isolation of the individual. Thus underlining the frailty of human body confronted with today’s world, in a sterile hospital universe, out of reality, referring to the horror film’s aesthetics. This installation offers to the viewer a moment of deep closeness and meditation, in a 3D universe modified under corporal pressures that may cause claustrophobia feelings.

The Dardex-Mort2Faim Collective (FR) gathers several artists, Quentin Destieu, Romain Senatore, Sylvain Huguet, and Stephane Kyles, who graduated from the Ecole Supérieure d’Art in Aix en Provence and some of them became laureates of Pépini res Européennes for young artists. They are activists as well as performers and first of all they engaged in an exploration of the notion of play, reprocessing popular aesthetics and underground culture, thus underlining the frailty of social relationships and the human body confronted with today’s world. Since they appreciate the video game “8 bits” universe and the computer and networks revolution, they express themselves by means of several techniques: video, sound, graphic arts, design, laser and the web in installations and happenings using interactivity and games. They collaborate with the International Centre for Art and New Technologies in Prague (CIANT), the Emergences festival in Paris, the Eniarof experimental fun fair and the M2F Creations Association in Aix en Provence. They have also presented their works on a regular basis since 2003 in various exhibitions and festivals in France and abroad.

Ivan Chabanaud (FR) studied in Paris in “Beaux Arts” and “Metiers d’Arts” and began his work with the classical painting stuff. Around 1992 his first touch with digital art started with a video “Hero Logo” about the mythological trip of Ulysse. He made animation on the Marcel Duchamps “Etant Donnés” work. Later he bacame interested in real-time virtual reality immersion and network streaming: Icare installation (virtual immersion) and Selfworld (numeric motel). He worked at CICV in Montbeliard. Lately, he works on choreography projects and is interested in physiological sensors that he develops with the R.A.N. (Réseau Art Numérique).

GOLEM

IMMEDIATE collective Rich-media dance performance

GOLEM is a 30 minutes dance performance telling the story of artificial man. It is based on the use of advanced audiovisual technologies such as granular sound synthesis, realtime 3D environments and computer systems for capturing movement. The dancer becomes both on-the-fly choreographer and co-author of the sound composition. Through the dance movements he pilots the sound part as well as influences the virtual projected scenography. Credits: PAVEL SMETANA (CZ) - artistic director LUKA PRINCIC (SI) - original electronic music JURIJ KONJAR (SI) - dancer & musical performer MICHAL MÁŠA (CZ) - motion capture & 3D STEPHANE KYLES (FR/USA) - production & light design ROMAIN SENATORE (FR) & QUENTIN DESTIEU (FR) - video creation JAN ŠEBEK (CZ) - technical production

Luka Prinčič (SI) is a musician, sound designer and media artist.

He has participated in a number of sound-music and multimedia projects. In addition to publishing web albums, he has been active in Ljudmila and Kiberpipa and is the administrator of skylined.org, an art-server/community. Prinčič is the author of audio-visual and electro-acoustic performances and multimedia actions in physical and mental-emotional spaces (Music for Hard Disks; Retrospections: MayaDeren; Waves in public: Squares). As a sound designer and adviser, he collaborates with artists, activists and producers of festivals and conferences at home and abroad (Eclipse, Neven Korda, Jodi Rose, Borut Savski, Luka Dekleva, Galerija Kapelica, MFRU, Netmage08, EMAF07, Device_art, Moderna galerija...). His work focuses on personally reflective and socially critical use of new technologies within contemporary audio-visual contexts. Most of his work is based on hacker ethics and DIY philosophy.
