The days grow long and the nights grow longer. It seems there is a universal consciousness growing on a daily basis to undermine, or outwit authority by the NOW generation to create their own way in business by not punching clocks, not working for someone else, or bailing on society. To create, develop, and forge forth to be one’s own boss is still the American dream. The entrepreneurial spirit is a growing concern in today’s society for both young and old to make way for an uncertain future where only the rich may survive. So, the object is to create a way to make a lot of money, in a relatively short period of time, with little, or no capital, have many volunteers, a brilliant product, and a retirement plan that can survive the onslaught of the next term of any political party, in any type of financial weather. This may be a daunting task at best! Onward, upward, and outward, I urge you to pursue your passion. Time is not only running out, but the Spirit of Freedom will never cease to abound. I wish you all well! We’re all playing the “Real” Hunger Games, if you give it any serious thought. Let the games begin!

How do you possibly revitalize the Music Industry, redefine Recording Contracts that benefit both the Artist & Label, and create economic stimulus in one fell swoop?? By Tim Driver Owner | ProductionAvenue

W

ell, if you’ve paid attention these last years, you would notice a proliferation of Micro-Funding and Fantasy Stock Market websites designed to help finance Musical Artists. The best of these sites are Kickstarter, Indiegogo, Slicethepie, Sellaband, Rockethub and GiveForward just to name a few. There are also fantasy stock markets such as HSX, and the educational project MusicStockMarket already in use teaching youth about stocks through music...

And though these are amazing options to entry level investments into Artists, they are not a substantial or sustaining form of investing for an Artists long term career. Some of these formats include selling “website parts, points, or dollars” as returns on artists, albums, tours, and merchandise.

So this lent to the questions…

And what if a Fan could buy stock in their favorite Artist? • Why isn’t there a regulated Stock Market Index for Music, and Entertainment in general?

constraints, Corporate Registrations and SCOR could give the Music Industry and Artists a funding option it never knew existed.

• And what would have happened for Artists, the Music Industry, and even the Economy if there was one?

IMAGINE instead of Labels signing Artists, Labels enter into “Corp Deals” with Artists. That instead of percentages, Labels receive stock options making Record Contracts incentive based for all involved. For, if the stock goes up, the more money is made for all. These terms would also apply to the entire business infrastructure of an Artist so as to create a viable corporation and economic stimulus; rather than being on a Label Roster as an Advance Expense that begins a never ending cycle of recouping...

In this article, the following business model explores and examines the possibilities of why it should be done - in addition to how simply it can be done thru Music IPO’s, DPO’s, and the creation of a regulated Music Stock Trading Index, tied to a little know business program called SCOR. SCOR stands for “Small Corporate Offering Registration” and is more commonly referred to as Reg D / Form U7 Filings. SCOR is a program regulated by each US State independently, and designed to foster economic growth for small businesses entering the corporate world within that State. SCOR allows Businesses that qualify, (or in this case Artists - as music is a viable economic industry), the ability to offer up to 1 million stocks, at no more than $1 per stock as a DPO - Thus generating one million dollars for a Record Labels signing budget, and/or for Artists of any level with significant fan bases. Of course SCOR is not well known, and navigating the application could become costly in legal fees. In addition, there are trading regulations that hinder selling options for buyers of such stock. However even with such minor c i A m ag a z i n eS.CO M

With “Corp Deals”, Labels could infuse a lucrative funding option into current Artists, and for signing new talent. Labels could diversify current rosters with IPO Corporate Deals for each Artist, creating an Umbrella Corporation of Label Subsidiaries spurring employment nationwide. And instead of Signing Advances budgeted from profits of other Artists sales, “DPO SCOR Deals” could be the saving grace of a Music Industry to sign new talent. However, this new model may trend the traditional role of a Record Label to that of Business Management, Stock Brokerage, Holding Company, and I dare say it, Investment Banker or Hedge Fund. Beyond that, the benefits exceed other options, and the “what if headlines” that have come to mind during research include: |11|

C IAARTISTS . C O M

“American Idol announces Judges; Urban, J-Lo and Connick stocks rally” “LMFAO huge IPO, Redfoo launches Music Day Trading Firm” “Korn, becoming Korn Inc., time to buy metal”“X Factor Stock, not Votes. Cowell saves himself 5 Mil” “Music Stock Index stimulates US Economy, Employment booms”

ARTIST CORPORATIONS would be structured exactly like a Record Company. Headed by experienced industry veterans, with separate departments devoted to every area of an Artist’s career including; Managers, Attorneys, Agents, Accountants, Publishing, Distribution, Marketing, Publicity, Radio Promotion, Tour Production, Merchandising, Branding, International Licensing, Social Media, New Media, etc. c i A m ag a z i n eS.CO M

Twist is, that Artists themselves become the Board of Directors governing their career, as Managers, Attorneys, Agents, Accountants, etc are named as Corporate Officers.

ESTABLISHED ARTISTS can instantly file and enter markets creating added value to their brand, while financing the remainder of their careers without the dependency of a Label. Those Established Artists that were affected by Music Industry demise and lost their deals, now have an option themselves to revive their careers. Instead of trying to re-shop themselves for an advance to record and tour, they can turn to their fan base. For example; 1 million fans purchasing $5 - $10 Stocks… is simply the difference between being dropped with no recourse, and the saving grace for Artists that can no longer get resigned due to the landscape of the Music Industry - not because they don’t have the talent or a substantial fan base. |12|

EMERGING ARTISTS passed over by Labels range of corporate filings & fees include but not due to budget constraints will now be able to be limited to: signed in this model. As mentioned, instead of • IPO $100k to $500k for Initial filings; w/ a Labels decision based upon signing budgets revenue based Annual Fees for that year, Labels have an option for Artists with the best supportive fan basses providing • DPO $50k to $100k for Initial filings; w/ all the Advance Capitol needed simply on $1 revenue based Annual Fees stocks alone. And, those Artists the Industry • PPO $5k+/- for Initial filings and listings; passed on completely that have the fans to w/ revenue based Annual Fees. support them, can simply create a Corporate Umbrella without being “signed”, starting their own Label, in addition to their own Publishing, Touring and Merchandise Companies. In either case whether signed to a Major Label or Independently, Artists create power by leveraging stock options, instead of giving up percentages, by building an umbrella corporation under ”Band, Inc or LLC”. And in today’s fan based social-media savvy world, this model would empower substantial Indie Artists, Local Labels and Recording Studios, stimulating local economies by applying these simple principals; Same would substantially occur, if National Artists kept their Corporate Umbrella to their hometowns.

ECONOMIC STIMULUS created from such a business model would filter thru every layer of the economy. Not only would this model reinvigorate the Music Industry from the mail room to the board room, but the infusion of capitol would spur a whole new Industry of Administrators and Regulators from Record Labels, Agencies, and Management Companies, to Holding Firms, Stock Brokerages, and Investment Bankers. And, if localized, an Artist’s “Hometown Corporation” would bring much needed employment and stimulus to their region(s).

THE COST OF ENTRY for both an Artist, themselves, or any Record Label, are the same. And regardless of any business model, running a corporation comes at cost, but with this model Artists will now bear the financial responsibilities. Not only does this model provide a financial opportunity, it requires financial stability, and federally bound by Initial / Annual filing regulations that can become costly. Initial costs are dependent upon how an Artist structures the corporation, and Annual costs are based on how financially successful you are as an Artist. The varied cost

In addition, this model stimulates all the ancillary industries. Just consider the effects on Transportation, Travel, Hotel, Textiles, Oil, Electronics, Fashion, Manufacturers, and, of course, Technology would flourish with countless Web-Ventures based upon this sole model. New areas of Law will emerge, needing the skills of seasoned Attorneys as the model grows thru regulation. Individuals credit will increase, as future Rock Stars have to maintain good rating to implement such a model, thereby teaching proper finances and promoting financial stability. However with all this, the most intriguing aspect is a new breed of investor, or shall I say “Fanvestor”…

...this model would re-invigorate the Music Industry

Music Fans didn’t disappear, they just stopped buying music, but they still buy into the Artists…

Lau ren Pryc e Hi - My name is Lauren Pryce. I’m from Chicago, IL. Many of you know me, from Co-Hosting The Mancow TV and Radio Show - that airs from coast to coast. I love the character I play on the show, of Amanda Bynes. Shes’ really, a lot of fun. I love wearing those little dresses and flipping my hair around. I want to Thank Mancow Muller and Brentwood Bill, for taking a chance on me. They have given me a ton of great advice, direction and support in my career. Without them I wouldn’t be, where I am today. We all know, how hard it is -- to make it big, in this industry. So, here’s some information about me: I love acting and modeling. I have a dynamite smile, great attitude and beautiful green eyes. I possess that “Can Do” attitude. There isn’t a role, that’s too big or too small - as far as I’m concerned. I am very easy to work with and take direction well. I am currently up for the role of Margo, in the Tarantino film “Prism”. I love modeling - clothes, make-up and hair accessories/products. I have been working with some great photographers, along this journey. Today I’m here in Los Angeles, tomorrow I could be in Paris. I just want you to know, I’m available at anytime and will go anywhere. In January I modeled at, The Chicago American Beauty Show. I had a fantastic time. In May you probably saw me, when I was walking the Red Carpet - at The 2014 Billboard Awards Show. I met some great people, in the music industry - that day. It was an experience, of a lifetime. Just the other day, I was interview by a TMZ reporter. That was fun. I have been meeting lots of great people, here in Los Angeles. I come from a close knit family, whose love and support I couldn’t live without. They have supported me every step, of this on going journey. They have taught me, how invaluable the love of family is. Without our families, we couldn’t accomplish our dreams. My parents have taught me how important it is, to be fully dedicated to achieving the goals that I set for myself. Layla Yuki In short I am an artist, writer, and general enthusiast of every poignant absurdity life has to offer. I began acting primarily because It would be exponentially easier to direct myself in my own screenplays because lets face it, actors can be difficult, and partially because it seemed like a good outlet for any kind of latent or repressed emotions ( of course by this I mean it’s fun to interact with people outrageously with no consequences). All of this sounds much less pretentious in my head so I’ll just end this by saying thank you for your consideration whoever is reading this! I am alot more ridiculously awesome in person.

A typical set might begin with the warm, sensual rhythms of Brazil and conclude with an emotionally charged blues song in the Etta James tradition. With a flare for adventure, Ali is known to reinterpret and improvise on many familiar tunes, often ending up with entirely new melodies, lyrics and rhythmic grooves. Gaia The combination of energies is what makes the Pop/Folk duo, Gaia, unique. The individual skills brought to the group by the existing members, Aura Baltrusaitis and Alicia Spillias, alone are remarkable. But the marriage of these abilities has had resounding results. Anyone who has seen them perform knows they have witnessed something special. With backgrounds in Opera, Jazz, Violin, Piano, Guitar, and Lithuanian folk harmonies, these ladies have a lot going for them. The songs they sing convey catchy melodies, stunning harmonies, and express heart-felt lyrics that exhibit a mature and profound spirit. There’s no doubt Gaia is going places. Gaia has performed all over Los Angeles at such venues as the House of Blues (Foundation Room, Parish Room, and Voodoo Lounge), The Mint, On the Rox, The Monarch Theater, The Joint, The Good Hurt, TRiP, among others. They have also recently become associated with the organization RAW Artists and performed at RAW showcases in both LA and Phoenix. SCO TT MAC KAY What began for Scott MacKay as casual weekly guitar lessons quickly grew into a true passion for singing and songwriting. Scott MacKay a native of Mt. Herbert, PEI, began exploring his musical talents upon entering university and today has completed his first EP, Dressed in Blue. As an emerging songwriter Scott places the focus on his lyrics, using music as the vehicle to carry the message. He hopes his carefully crafted lyrics will invite emotions from his listeners. His songs touch on several topics universal to us all such as love found, faded, and lost. Scott doesn’t shy away from topics that are uneasy and plans on exploring the uncomfortable as a means to grow personally, as well as a musician, and connect with his audience at more than just a surface level.

JENNY STAMPE R Hey y’all! My name is Jenny Stamper and I am a singer-songwriter. I have been on stage for over fifteen years with a female acoustic duo known as Justus. We continue to perform throughout Southern Ohio and are eagerly planning a trip to Nashville in April 2012 to kick start the release of our new CD, “Diamonds on the Water.” I was raised in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky. My hometown is Hindman, which is the county seat for Knott county. Of course, I’ve had many influences throughout the years. And yes, there were the “hair band” days. I was told many times to turn down the Led Zeppelin, AC/DC and Aerosmith that was blaring from my bedroom. Although I still love those bands, I cut my teeth on bluegrass. When I heard Bill Monroe, Ralph Stanley, or Larry Sparks playing throughout our family home, well, I knew Mommy was having a good day. Later, my influences became Wynonna Judd, Bonnie Raitt, and other strong, talented women that had “made it in the business”. I especially enjoy artists who sing about my beloved Kentucky home. After several years performing original and cover music, I am excited to focus more on song writing and sharing my stories with a larger audience. I am proud to be a member of the Nashville Songwriter’s Association International and look forward to additional networking with other professionals. I am seeking opportunities in the music industry, to include placement of music in film and television.

judge ja cks on band If you’re a living, breathing rock and roll diehard with a pulse just about anywhere across this great country of ours—no one embodies that drive, determination and lifestyle better than JUDGE JACKSON, whose balls-to-the-wall classic take on a noble tradition is the soundtrack to your life. For more than a decade, through five albums, a thousand shows and tours with Gov’t Mule, Doobie Bros., Cheap Trick, Buckcherry, Army of Anyone, UFO and Joe Bonamassa, among others, this hard-driving quartet’s music can be heard on a variety of TV shows, including the Super Bowl, NHL and NBA playoffs, and NASCAR. JUDGE JACKSON began in 1995, when vocalist/lyricist McTavish, who came to town from Canada, where he once played in a band that featured Shania Twain as back-up vocalist, joined guitarist/ songwriter Jackson in L.A. to tirelessly play the town’s club circuit. By 1998, the band released its debut album, followed by a second CD, 8068. Drummer Garcia joined the group after the release of JUDGE JACKSON’s third CD, One Diamond, which marked the band’s multimedia breakthrough, with “Amazing” receiving airplay across the U.S., while “Times Been Changing” was featured on NBC’s popular comedy My Name Is Earl. And while they’ve been the best-kept secret on the L.A. rock scene, JUDGE JACKSON is gaining recognition. The group’s last album, Drive was named “Best CD of the Year” in the 5th Annual All Access Magazine Awards. Since then, the group has added bassist Brian James, formerly of The Rocking Scoundrels and Stone, to replace longtime member Ryan Rogers. Judge Jackson is currently in the studio working on the next record, playing dates with Tesla and wrapping up an exclusive music video production and interview series for schools across Canada and the US.

Nicki’s resume includes numerous awards, including the Australian Entertainment Industry award for Best Country Performer. She has also had chart success in Australia and Europe with a No. 1 hit on the UK country charts with “Be A Star”, a cheeky upbeat song written herself that depicts her life as a performer and advice given along the way. The song remained at No.1 for four weeks and on the charts for 14 weeks. Nicki has toured and performed in many parts of the world including Australia, Britain, Germany, USA, New Zealand, she has also entertained troops in the Middle East, Solomon Islands and East Timor. royc e nelson Royce has lived for the stage since her first taste as a young toddler, tip toeing in tap shoes in front of a few hundred people. However, she discovered her true passion for singing as a 10 year old at summer camp belting out tunes on the stage for the first time. “It combined my two favorite things: the stage and a rush I could only feel from singing my heart out,” Royce says as she reminisces. By the age of 13, she was working in the studio with songwriter/producer Karen Tobin, and in 2004 she won a Golden Globe for singing background vocals on a song sung by Mick Jagger for the movie “Alfie” called “Old Habits Die Hard”. She went on to record demos and back-up vocals for many producers, songwriters, and artists including Dave Stewart, Lois Blaisch (writer of Tiffany’s 1988 #1 hit single “Could’ve Been”), Mick Jagger, Sheryl Crow, and Candyman 187. To date, she has performed in venues all over Los Angeles including The House of Blues, The Viper Room, The Roxy, and The Whiskey-A-Go-Go. She has also fronted her fair share of bands and been in few girl groups (most recently BG4 produced by Bobby Jones and Shane Sparks of “So You Think You Can Dance”). She is currently writing for other artists while also embarking on a Pop/Rock solo career cowriting her newest originals with songwriter Peter Hanna (writer of “Hollywood Girl” for the Hollywood Insider and Mitchel Musso’s new record “Get Away”.)

Michele Vr eeland An electrical aura of energy surrounds the music of singer/songwriter Michele Vreeland and flows into songs that crystallize dreams, emotions and intentions. With her upcoming CD Wild Horse, Vreeland infuses this alchemy into a powerful litany of seven exquisitely crafted songs. Vreeland grew up in the Los Angeles suburbs of Whittier, Long Beach and Norwalk, California; a graffiti-dotted landscape of warehouses and strip malls. Michele has a wealth of compatible talents. Prior to her musical career, she worked in feature films and editorial fashion campaigns as a hair and makeup stylist; and she is both an accomplished seamstress and a painter. She avows that as a visual person, it is her gift to see colors. “I can visualize something before I do it. Music and color are very much tied together – when I’m singing a note, I hear it exactly for what it is. Also, when I’m writing, I’m telling a story. And visually I have told stories through editorials and fashion. Songwriting is another medium to do that.” As a performer, Michele is equally at home with either her full band or in a solo setting where she accompanies herself on her sponsored brand Luna guitar she endearingly calls “Phoenix.” And not unlike the well known Greek mythology of the legend of the phoenix, where a phoenix obtains new life by arising from the ashes of its predecessor, Michele brings the same courageous yet venerable spirit to the upcoming album Wild Horse.

Heaven & earth Heaven & Earth, who have just released their third album entitled “Dig”, is the brainchild of British guitarist Stuart Smith who was mentored by Deep Purple’s Ritchie Blackmore. “Dig”, which has been hailed unanimously by the press as the “Best Rock Album in the last 10 years”, features, along with Smith on guitars, powerhouse vocalist Joe Retta (Sweet), bassist Chuck Wright (Quiet Riot/House of Lords), keyboard player Arlan Schierbaum (Joe Bonamassa), and long time drummer Richie Onori (Sweet). Heaven & Earth established a following back in 1998 with the release of the first album “Heaven & Earth featuring Stuart Smith” which featured a myriad of guests such as Richie Sambora, Joe Lynn Turner, Glenn Hughes, Carmine Appice, Kelly Hansen and many others. A second album, “Widows to the World” was released in 2001 and featured ex Baton Rouge singer Kelly Keeling. In 2008 Smith took a hiatus to play in the reformed “Sweet” with bassist Steve Priest but quit in 2012 to concentrate on the new Heaven & Earth album. A chance meeting with Bruce Quarto in 2008 set the wheels in motion and after assembling the band Smith and Quarto proceeded to spend the next 14 months producing what would turn out to be not only a labor of love but the best Heaven & Earth album to date. Producer Dave Jenkins was brought in to produce and record “Dig” which was recorded in Ocean Studios using analog tape and was released in April 2013 on Quarto Valley Records.

MA RA & THE BIG ROCKSTARS FUN 80’ s ROCK COVER BAND Sure, Mara & The Big Rockstars will play some Journey and Bon Jovi – because they’re awesome! But they also play tunes like ‘Final Countdown,’ ‘Africa,’ ‘Kickstart My Heart,’ and “Eye Of The Tiger” to keep audiences on the dance floor and at the bar. What sets them apart from other 80s party bands is not silly costumes or schticky dialogue, but completely live instruments with five-part vocal harmonies, and a can’t-take-your-eyes-off-her front-woman, most often compared to Janis Joplin and Nancy Wilson. Audiences of all ages follow their roaming party from venue to venue all over Los Angeles, bringing the rock hits to clubs, festivals and private/corporate parties. Also available as an acoustic solo, duo, or trio for more intimate engagements. Before the cover band, Mara was an award-winning solo singer/songwriter chasing a record deal in LA. A native New Yorker, she jump-started her career playing on the streets and in the pubs of Scotland. She found herself playing five packed nights a week for locals and International backpackers, promoting her original albums. Invitations for live radio appearances and performances as a featured artist at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival kept her on the move, and she returned to tour in the UK for the following three summers. Her performances gained national media coverage on Scottish television, radio and worldwide webcasts. In the states or overseas, 80s covers or originals, Mara continues her commitment to making a difference by donating time and performances to support Breast Cancer and Alzheimer’s Research charities.

John Eng hauser Singer/Songwriter, John Enghauser, has been on the original music scene since the mid 90’s. Beginning with his band Jamawokee, a high octane 4-piece funk rock project which debuted in Massachusetts, John began honing his songwriting and frontman skills. The band released its first recording self-titled “Jamawokee” in 1996. In the late 90’s, John fronted his own original group, Jeng, where he wrote all of the material and whose potent live show piqued the interest of record labels such as Columbia and Virgin Records. John released his second album “Larium Dream” which was a compilation of Jeng songs he’d written during his time with the band. It was around this time that John also served as Music Director and contributing songwriter on the indie films “Urban Relics” and “When it Rains”. The “Urban Relics” Soundtrack would mark John’s 3rd official release to date. In 2000, Enghauser ventured westward where he landed in California. After several musical stints in San Francisco and Los Angeles, John has settled in the bay area where he’s just completed his long anticipated fourth release “Lost In The Pages”. In addition to all vocals, John performs guitar, bass and keyboards on the CD. Currently, John’s new band is performing and promoting “Lost in the Pages” live while the CD is being played in 13 countries worldwide including England, Australia, Germany, France, New Zealand, Canada and The U.S.A. “Lost in the Pages” has already received critical acclaim by being nominated by LA Music Awards as “Best Album of 2009” in two categories. I just celebrated one year of performing at the Las Vegas Hilton, in ‘NUNSENSE’ as Sister Robert Anne. This is the most comedic lead I have ever been given, and it is such a blast to sing, dance, act, and listen to laughter every day! I have credits for film, television, and radio, along with an extensive history in theater. I have been a lead in Las Vegas production shows for more than 8 years. One of my favorite LV production shows was an original musical called ‘Tease’. We played ‘strippers’ and were dubbed one of Vegas’s sexiest shows, by E! Entertainment and the Travel Channel, and aired in reruns on both channels for several years. So if I look familiar, perhaps you were up late one night... This magazine is all about passion, and mine is alive in many areas. This year I was inducted into the Las Vegas Rock & Roll Hall of Fame for work I did as a youngster in a fantastic 9 piece horn band that recorded originals, and played at Disneyland and Disneyworld. You may have seen me at the Tropicana Hotel in LV all through the 80’s in an act called ‘Taylor & Taylor’, singing and playing bass. After a career performing in nightclubs and lounges all over the world for more than 20 years, I still perform regularly in ‘copy’ bands doing everything from Lady Gaga to Joan Jett to Diana Krall. This year I have been interviewed several times for KNPR (public radio), as a professional performer in Las Vegas, and on a panel for ‘Hope’. My passion is to participate for the rest of my life!

The land was later purchased by Los Angeles real-estate magnate Alphonzo Bell, Sr.; and in 1927, the surrounding hillsides were hydraulically graded to fill the canyon and make it level for future development. However, these earthmoving activities were halted prematurely, leaving a large basin in the portion of the canyon that had not been leveled. This basin quickly filled with water from the many springs in the area, creating Lake Santa Ynez - the only natural spring-fed lake within c i A m ag a z i n eS.CO M

the city limits of Los Angeles.

The area remained undeveloped for more than a decade. Over the years, reeds and cattails almost completely hid the lake from view. With the exception of the youngsters who delighted in having a private “swimming hole,” most local residents considered it a worthless swamp. One individual, however, saw it in a different light-H. Everett McElroy, assistant superintendent of construction for 20th Century Fox studios, who purchased the property in 1940. Mr. McElroy (affectionately known as “Big Mac” to one and all) was a man of unusual vision and |82|

practical ingenuity. “There is no doubt that we were labeled as crazy,” he recalled in later years. “But looking up at the bowl surrounding my mudhole, I could see terraces of trees - all kinds of trees, maybe 500 tropical and otherwise. I could see banks of flowers and shrubs and a path meandering around the lake, with cutaways into the bank for tree ferns and hanging baskets of fuchsias and begonias and mossy green rock plants. I was itching to build rockeries and put in rustic wooden bridges and a giant water wheel that would act in conjunction with a pump as irrigation through a pipe-laid water system over the entire project.”

The House Boat

Wartime shortages of construction materials did not hinder Mr. and Mrs. McElroy from starting to create their unique private paradise. The weeds were cleared away and the lake dredged; and the McElroys transported their doubledeck Mississippi-style houseboat, “Adeline,” from Lake Mead by the Hoover Dam to their new home on Lake Santa Ynez.

The Dutch Windmill

Next, the McElroys started their third project on

the lake - an authentic reproduction of a 16th-century Dutch windmill. Though the mill was never put to use, its sails are functional and capable of turning in the wind. Then came a boat dock and landing, whose peaked roof, carved figure-heads, and benches added yet another charming touch to the unusual setting.

The Mill House In subsequent years, McElroy constructed a new residence across the lake from the houseboat. He modeled it after a small mill house, complete with a two-and-ahalf ton, fifteen-foot waterwheel that was used to capture the overflow from the lake and send it into an irrigation system. Stained glass windows, Tyrolean carvings, a twisting circular staircase, and a swinging wood-and-rope bridge suspended above the willows and ferns of a small gully contributed to the mill house’s charm. After the mill house was completed, the McElroys made it their new home, renting the houseboat to film stars and others in the movie industry, and on occasion to royalty. c i A m ag a z i n eS.CO M

The Dream

How the McElroys’ ten-acre park became the Self-Realization Fellowship Lake Shrine is a remarkable story. In the late 1940s Mr. and Mrs. McElroy sold the property to an oil-company |84|

president, who moved into the windmill and planned to construct a multi-million dollar resort hotel complex around the lake. Before he could proceed, however, the new owner of the property had a strange experience.

The clarity in which Paramahansa Yogananda lived his life and left a path for many who followed, and still follow, 61 years after his death is testimony to Spirituality at the highest level. I wander from the intent of this article unintentionally to make a point of this sacred place one should visit in their lifetime if you find yourself in Southern California. The Lake Shrine was dedicated by Parmahansa in 1950. Thousands of visitors come from all over the world to see this Spiritual Sanctuary. Ten acres of floral gardens, springs, and the variety of swans, ducks, koi, and trees and flowers from all over the world are a sight to behold. The property began developing as early as the 1920’s by a silent film company nestled in the San Ynez Canyon off PCH1. Buildings and the grounds are scattered with meditation spots and interesting structures throughout. All Pathways lead to the entrance and are overlooked by the Shrine Temple on the hill. During this period he spent many hours in deep prayer and divine communion at the lake, invoking God’s blessings on all who would visit there.

Here’s my take on the whole thing.

You hear of beautiful places to see in life. This is one for the bucket list. There’s even an authentic Dutch windmill, boat dock, and landing. The acquisition of the property was a strange story in itself. Something of divine nature of sorts.

In closing, Parmahansa outlined the single purpose in life; Seek out GOD! Many have found him through meditation at the Shrine. Of all the Spiritual Leaders that come and go http://www.lakeshrine.org/ in life there are few that really give the sense of 17190 Sunset Blvd, Pacific Palisades, CA 90272 • divine Holiness in their life time.
