CHW timeline

Since 1917, CHW has been improving the lives of women, children, and families in Israel and Canada. To mark this momentous occasion, let’s take a trip down memory lane to get inspired and celebrate 100 years of achievement. 1917 – Inspired by a visit from Henrietta Szold, the first official chapter of Hadassah is established in Toronto by Anna Selick (later Anna Raginsky). 1918 – At a Zionist convention, Lillian Freiman was approached to become the first National President of Canadian Hadassah

1919 – The first Junior Chapters of Hadassah are formed. 1920 – Rebecca Sieff of Britain founded the Women’s International Zionist Organization (WIZO) and is elected its first President. 1921 – First National Canadian Hadassah Convention is held in Montreal. Lillian Freiman is officially elected the first National President of Hadassah Organization of Canada. • Canadian Hadassah affiliates with World WIZO. • Canadian Hadassah’s name is changed to the HadassahWIZO Organization of Canada. 1923 – Canadian Hadassah-WIZO becomes an official sponsor of the Chana Maisel Shochat Agricultural School at Nahalal. 1924 – The first Hadassah-WIZO Bazaar is held in Toronto.

1933 – Youth Aliyah is established, and Canadian Hadassah-WIZO soon becomes its official sponsor in Canada. 1934 – The first group of 43 Youth Aliyah children were received by Henrietta Szold in Israel. 1939 – CHW supports wartime services in England, Canada, and Palestine. Much work is done to provide emergency care for refugees. 1940 – The death of Lillian Freiman ends her fruitful 21 years as CHW President, and Anna Selick Raginsky becomes the second National President.

1945 – CHW coordinated an ambitious emergency program for the care and rehabilitation of thousands of war refugees, and took on the role of rebuilding the basic structure of WIZO in Israel.
