Lillian Freiman founded Canadian Hada ssah-WIZO in 1917.

D espite her busy home life (she wa s married with three children), Lillian hosted meetings, op ened her home to new immigrants, supp or ted countless causes, supp or ted veterans, raised funds for those in need, established the first agricultural scho ol for women in Israel (CHW Nahalal Youth Village), travelled the world to fight injustice, and oversaw the transp or t of 150 Uk rainian Jewish orphans to Canada. Lillian is also celebra ted a s b eing the Canadian “Poppy Lady,” thanks to her long-term role a s Na tiona l Poppy Chair. By the mid-1920s, under Freiman’s leadership, CHW had grown to 4,500 memb ers and 68 chapters ac ross the countr y. From 1919–1940, Lillian ser ved a s Na tional President of CHW. In 1934, she b ecame the first Canadian Jew to b e awarded the O rder of the British Empire. Lillian pa ssed away a t the age of 55, af ter handing down her pa ssion for philanthropy to the nex t genera tion.
