Sustainable Living:

When Healing the Earth Meets Healing Oneself

According to the United Nations Environment Programme, sustainable lifestyles are “ways of living, social behaviors and choices that minimize environmental degradation while supporting equitable socio-economic development and better quality of life for all.” At the heart of sustainable living is an understanding about how our choices affect ourselves and each other, and an appreciation of how those choices support our individual health and wellbeing.

In honor of April’s Earth Month, we sat down with Alyssa Bolaños, a local sustainability activist and founder of Winter Park’s Eco Shop + Refillery, Oh Eco, to discuss how living a sustainable lifestyle intersects with her own health and wellbeing. Keep reading to discover Alyssa’s point of view on creating a lifestyle that’s accessible for all, her tips and tricks for making easy swaps that have a big impact, and why spending time in nature improves overall wellbeing.

CHWB: Living sustainably is important year-round, but for those of us who are new to the movement, April’s Earth Month is a great time to get started. As an advocate for green living, what does the term “living sustainably” mean to you?

6
A Conversation with Alyssa Bolaños, Founder of Winter Park’s Eco Shop + Refillery, Oh Eco.

ALYSSA: Living sustainably will look different for everyone because it’s about everyone's individual journey -- what's realistic for me might not be realistic for someone else. But at the very core of it, living sustainably to me is living in a mindful way that tries to do no harm to ourselves and to the planet around us. It’s all about balancing our lifestyle with the world around us.

CHWB: What are easy swaps that lead to a more sustainable lifestyle? And how can those small swaps lead to a big impact not only on the individual but also on a larger scale?

ALYSSA: The easiest places to start making swaps are your kitchen and your bathroom. I find that those are the places that have more one-for-one swaps. You have a toothbrush that's plastic, and here's the same toothbrush, but it’s made from wood instead. So, it's an easier swap than someone going from Colgate Toothpaste to toothpaste tabs. A lot of those swaps mimic your regular non-sustainable disposable items. Bathroom and kitchen swaps are small changes that make a big impact. Another swap is going from plastic water bottles to a reusable bottle. Refilling a water bottle a certain number of times saves you money and plastic from entering landfills and waterways. These swaps, while they seem small, can lead to a larger impact on environmental wellbeing and allow sustainability to be accessible.

CHWB: While working to make sustainability accessible for everyone as the owner of Winter Park’s Refillery + Eco Shop, Oh Eco, how do you encourage repeat customers and first-time shoppers to make that initial step towards a more sustainable lifestyle?

ALYSSA: Start small. Finish what you have and swap or refill what you need. I always tell people to finish their laundry detergent, soap, shampoo, and conditioner, and then come try our refillery. I think once we have these conversations about how sustainable swaps are accessible for everyone, the movement starts to click and become a habit. There are always individuals who are intimidated by making those changes and I normally use this example: you buy a bottle of hand soap, and then you throw it out, you buy another one -- the process repeats itself. But you can bring that first empty bottle here and refill it. I often tell my customers and browsers to just try something, they don't have to change their whole lifestyle to make an impact. And I think that's something that resonates with them. I think when they come to Oh Eco, and have that conversation with me, they're already less intimidated. I like to have products in my store that you wouldn't typically think are eco-friendly. That's where the Oh, in our Oh Eco comes from. People browse the store and find something new and say “Oh, this is ecofriendly?” It shows people that making the step towards sustainability can be accomplished. Part of our mission is that we want sustainability to be easy and accessible for everyone.

CHWB: The Center for Health & Wellbeing is rooted in the Seven Dimensions of Wellbeing, a guiding philosophy that includes Environmental Wellbeing. To us, environmental wellbeing means that helping the planet can bring a sense of accomplishment and wellbeing to your own life. How does living sustainably align with the ways you support your own wellbeing?

ALYSSA: I believe that nature is healing. Everyone needs to spend some time outside every day in the sun and fresh air. The goal of living sustainably or environmentally conscious is to protect this planet. So, every day I'm able to sit and enjoy being outside, experiencing the world around us, the air and sun, the little things that people tend to take for granted

7

and being grounded in the environment helps my mental health. I'm able to start my day a little more levelheaded and clearer. At the same time, purchasing and eating locally grown food and produce decreases emissions, plus we're eating healthier, organic food that was grown close to home. I feel better not only by eating healthier, more natural foods but by purchasing from local farmers, I'm supporting a local business while being environmentally conscious.

Alyssa moved to Orlando from New York with her husband Patrick and realized that there was a need for sustainability resources, eco-friendly swaps to bathroom and kitchen essentials and a place where the community can learn about living sustainably in a fun and inclusive environment. She founded Oh Eco, Winter Park’s one-stop eco-friendly shop and refillery, where she helps community members make eco-conscious swaps for their everyday products.

Meet Alyssa and shop her eco-friendly goods when she joins other sustainability vendors during the 2024 Ward & Wellbeing Earth Day Block Party on April 27. Back for another year, the Block Party is jam-packed with family-friendly, sustainability-themed fun! LET’S TALK ABOUT FITNESS

Yoga for the Body, Mind and Soul

Yoga is a powerful tool for the body, mind, and soul and can be an impactful ally in your life. Yoga is a combination of slow movements, deep breathing, and meditation that increases blood flow while warming up muscles and building strength. Yoga is offered as part of the group fitness class schedule at the Crosby Wellness Center located inside the Center for Health & Wellbeing; different yoga classes focused on the many styles of the ancient exercise include yoga basics, yoga flow, yin yoga, power yoga, restorative yoga, chair yoga, candlelight yoga, and more.

The benefits of practicing yoga are endless. Here are our top five:

Increases Lung Capacity

Practicing yoga can improve your balance, coordination, breathing, and mindfulness while decreasing stress and anxiety. At CWC, there are many classes for you to discover your love of yoga. 1 2 3 4 5

Adding yoga to your daily routine can increase your chest wall’s ability to expand, which in turn, boosts lung capacity because you’ve trained your lungs to hold more air. An increased lung capacity is important in cardiovascular exercise, strong stamina, and physical performance and can promote increased mental clarity and focus by delivering more oxygen to the brain.

Promotes Mindfulness

Mindfulness can be defined as “a mental state achieved by focusing one’s awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one’s feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations” (2023). You are focused on your breathing while practicing yoga, keeping your thoughts on the present moment and encouraging yourself to momentarily forget about everyday struggles and stressors.

Yoga encompasses holding muscle-building poses while you actively stretch, which simultaneously improves strength and increases your flexibility. Releasing the tension in your body by holding these stretches for 30-60 seconds improves your range of motion and leaves you feeling less tense and your body less stiff. A 2022 study by Taylor, et al., showed that “people improved their flexibility by up to 35% after only eight weeks of yoga” (Taylor, 2022).

Increases Flexibility and Strength Improves Balance and Coordination Can Help Heal Psychological Trauma

Yoga does an excellent job of strengthening and stretching muscles essential for balance. The yoga poses described below challenge static balance, the ability to stand in one spot without swaying, and dynamic balance, the ability to anticipate and react to changes as you move. Successfully managing these tasks requires you to keep your center of gravity poised over a base of support.

The same 2022 study from Taylor, et al., found that yoga, when paired with clinical interventions including psychotherapy, “produced a moderate effect on reducing trauma-related symptoms in people who have been exposed to psychological trauma” (Taylor 2022). The main effects that a yoga practice had on participants in the study who had experienced psychological trauma were increased selfcompassion, feeling more centered, improved coping skills, a better mind–body relationship, and enhanced relationships with others.

These Health Screenings Could Save Your Life

Preventive care is essential to your long-term health and wellness. When you’re proactive about prevention — by staying on top of your annual exams and doctor-recommended screenings — you’re able to catch potential issues sooner and better safeguard your health. If you need more proof that the right screenings can save lives, here are three examples:

Colorectal Cancer Screenings

Colonoscopies can not only identify cancer, they can prevent it from occurring. These screenings find precancerous growths called polyps in the colon or rectum so your doctor can remove them before they turn into cancer. Screenings also find this type of cancer early, when it’s easiest to treat. The CDC credits screening with preventing roughly 33,000 colorectal cancer cases and saving about 16,000 lives in one five-year period. Yet a third of adults ages 45 to 75 aren’t keeping up with their recommended colorectal screenings.

Though you may have some fear and hesitation about getting a colonoscopy, the preparation and procedure have been simplified and streamlined in recent years to improve your experience. This relatively quick outpatient procedure is considered the “gold standard” in preventing colorectal cancers.

Blood Pressure Screenings

Earlier and better treatment of high blood pressure — which can only be found by an exam — plays a role in the decreasing death rates from heart attacks, blood vessel diseases, strokes and kidney disease, according to the American Heart Association. In the past four decades, the mortality rate from heart and circulatory diseases has fallen about 65 percent.

Yet about one in five Americans who has high blood pressure doesn’t even know it. That’s especially troublesome because high blood pressure, sometimes called “the silent killer,” has no symptoms.

Getting your blood pressure checked is the only way to know if you should be making lifestyle changes or taking medication to get it under control.

Pap Test

Since being introduced in 1941, the Pap test has reduced cervical cancer-related deaths by about 74 percent. The latest recommendation from the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), American Cancer Society (ACS), and other groups fine-tunes earlier advice, generally

advising women to get this test about every three years starting at age 21. Talk to your doctor about how frequently you should be getting screened.

Key Recommended Health Screenings

Here are some of the health screenings most highly recommended by the USPSTF:

Blood pressure screening: screening for high blood pressure for adults 18 and older.

Breast cancer screening: screening every other year using mammography for women ages 40 to 74.

Cervical cancer screening: Pap tests every three years for women ages 21 to 65 who have had vaginal intercourse and have a cervix.

Cholesterol blood test: Screening to determine cholesterol abnormalities is strongly recommended for men 35 and older and women 45 and older if they’re at increased risk for coronary heart disease. Screening is also recommended for men 20 to 35 and women 20 to 45 if they’re at increased risk for coronary artery disease.

Colorectal cancer screening: Using fecal occult blood testing, sigmoidoscopy, or colonoscopy beginning at age 45 until age 75 (an American Cancer Society recommendation). As the USPSTF notes, the risks and benefits of these three methods vary.

Type 2 diabetes screening: recommended for adults without any diabetes symptoms who have sustained blood pressure (either treated or untreated) higher than 135/80.

In terms of preventive health, of course, regular screening tests are just part of the puzzle. You should also develop a relationship with a primary care provider. Your doctor can keep an eye on your well-being, talk with you about a healthier lifestyle, keep your immunizations up-to-date and help you control illnesses if they do develop.
