The City of Union City feels that it is important for all of the youth in our community to have the opportunity to experience the various recreational programs that are offered by the Leisure Services Department. The S.O.K. Scholarship Fund offers a limited number of special scholarships for Union City youth 18 years and under who wish to experience a Leisure Services program but are unable to, due to financial hardship. Scholarships provide 50-75 % of the registration fee, up to a maximum of $200. Scholarships are limited to one program per youth, per year as long as funds are available and families meet the financial qualifications. For more information and a scholarship application, please call the Holly Community Center at 675-5488 or the Kennedy Community Center at 675-5357. We also would like to encourage the members of our community to help support the S.O.K. Scholarship program by making contributions with their Leisure Services registrations. Great news! Union City's Station Center - mixed-use, transitoriented city center development for mixed-income residents, has been selected by the Urban Land Institute (ULI) as a finalist in the 35th annual ULI Global Awards for Excellence competition. The competition honors real estate projects that achieve a high standard of excellence in design, construction, economics, planning and management. ULI has honored outstanding development projects in both the private and public sectors with the ULI Global Awards for Excellence program, which today is widely recognized as the development community’s most prestigious awards program. ULI Awards for Excellence recognize the full development process of a project, not just its architecture or design— although these elements play an important role in the overall project. Each award is presented to the development project, with the developer accepting on behalf of the project. The criteria for the awards include factors that go beyond good design, including leadership, contribution to the community, innovations, public/private partnership, environmental protection and enhancement, response to societal needs, and financial success. Winning projects represent the highest standards of achievement in the development industry—standards that ULI members deem worthy of attainment in their professional endeavors. All types of projects have been recognized for their excellence, including office, residential, recreational, urban/mixed use, industrial/office park, commercial/retail, new community, rehabilitation, public, and heritage projects, as well as programs and projects that do not fit into any of these product categories. Burglary Prevention Tips The Union City Police Department is providing the following Burglary Prevention Tips to keep your home and loved ones safe:  Make your home look occupied, and make it difficult to break in.  Lock all outside doors and windows before you leave the house or go to bed. Even if it is for a short time, lock your doors.  Leave lights on when you go out. If you are going to be away for a length of time, connect some lamps to automatic timers to turn them on in the evening and off during the day.  Keep your garage door closed and locked.  Don't allow daily deliveries of mail, newspapers or flyers build up while you are away. Arrange with the post office to hold your mail, or arrange for a friend or neighbor to take them regularly.  Arrange for your lawn to be mowed if you are going away for an extended time.  Check your locks on doors and windows and replace them with secure devices as necessary.  Pushbutton locks on doorknobs are easy for burglars to open. Install deadbolt locks on all your outside doors.  Sliding glass doors are vulnerable. Special locks are available for better security.  Other windows may need better locks. Check with a locksmith or hardware store for alternatives. Sign up for Nixle today to receive UCPD alerts - www.nixle.com or text Union City’s zipcode (94587) to 888777.

U.C. NEWSLETTER

In late June, the community came together to celebrate the hope of its future. Approximately one year ago, Union City was given the opportunity to run a youth employment program servicing the Tri-City community with the focus of aiding our local businesses and developing youth into a more self-sufficient lifestyle. The night highlighted the success of the youth who completed the program, and the community partners who have helped make the program possible, including Union City Mayor Carol Dutra-Vernaci, Alameda County Supervisor, District 2, Richard Valle and City of Fremont Human Services Director, Suzanne Shenfil. Bringing together the interns, family, various worksites managers and City officials made testament to the success of the program and how much more successful it can be in years to come.

Smoking and Tobacco Regulations !!!

Did you know that new smoking regulations have been adopted by the City of Union City? Union City promotes a healthy living environment & protects non-smokers from exposure to secondhand smoke where they live, work, & play. In November, 2010, the City Council restricted smoking in rental complex units, unenclosed common areas, & outdoor dining spaces. Tobacco retailers also need to obtain a local Tobacco Retailer License.

No alcohol is allowed at any of our parks!

There is no exclusive use of any Union City park. Park permits only reserve picnic areas and BBQ units. There may be other events going on at the parks simultaneously.

Key Requirements:

• Smoking is prohibited in all rental complexes (2+ units) common areas (enclosed & unenclosed). • As of Feb 23, 2012 smoking in any rental complex, including balconies & patios, is prohibited. • Smoking is prohibited in all outdoor dining areas of restaurants & surrounding 25 feet. • Smoking is prohibited in parks, public events, and service areas (i.e., bus stops, ATMs). • Clear, conspicuous, and unambiguous “NO SMOKING” or “SMOKE FREE” signs are required in places where smoking is not permitted. For more information, please refer to Municipal Code Chapters 5.42 and 7.13 or contact Avalon Schultz, Associate Planner, at (510) 675-5321 or ASchultz@unioncity.org

Sports Fields!!

Union City has several sporting fields available for reservation. Fields can be used for a variety of sports. You need to have a permit in order to use the field for any type of organized game or practice. For more information, please contact the sports field staff at the Sports Center at (510) 675-5805.

Inflatable Bounce Houses!

The are only allowed in designated areas and require a generator. You may not have a bounce house at any Union City park without a park reservation.
