Things Above from Fr. Bilot On September 10, 94 people embarked on a short trip to Mackinac Island. We started the day by boarding busses here at Divine Child and St. Frances Cabrini in Allen Park. Those from Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish met here or at Cabrini. We started the trek in the rain but, by the time we hit West Branch, MI, the clouds parted, and the sun and blue skies emerged. We arrived at the National Shrine of the Cross in the Woods to celebrate Mass. It was an honor to celebrate Mass at such a beautiful place, honoring our Savior, Jesus Christ, who suffered and died for our Salvation! After partaking of the spiritual food of the Eucharist, we ate lunch and headed to Mackinaw City to board the ferry boats to the Island. Upon arriving at the Island, we were met with many horse-drawn carriages to take us to the Grand Hotel. We spent the rest of that day, and the next, taking in the beauty of God's country and the grandeur of the Grand Hotel. We celebrated Mass at the Hotel, which was a wonderful experience as well. I enjoyed being together with so many people who were excited and happy to have the opportunity to spend time in "Pure Michigan." I so enjoyed the lack of traffic noise, horns blaring, and chaotic traffic (no orange cones on the island!). The serene sound of the clip-clop of the horse's hooves lulls the body into a mindful state of relaxation. If you haven't had the opportunity to experience the awe of Mackinac Island, I would encourage you to spend a day or two there. The trip was short but worth the adventure. In the future, I hope to do some local events for those who can't take extended time off from work or be away from family. In light of the awful events that have taken place in the Church, and as we continue to move forward, I remind you to listen to my address that I gave after all the Masses several weeks ago (you can find it under Homilies on the parish website). Furthermore, last week, we published an article from Judge Michael Talbot and his explanation of the Review Board that is in place here in the Archdiocese. Please review his letter if you have not done so. If you encounter anyone (or yourself) who is angry about the chaos in the Church -- I affirm your justified anger. However, because of this anger, many are reacting by leaving the Catholic Church and their beliefs and faith in Jesus Christ. I strongly remind everyone that leaving is only pleasing to the Evil One. The Evil One takes great pleasure in seeing people leave the Sacraments, and thus be deprived of the graces received. If we sever our desire to receive the Holy Eucharist, we sever ourselves from Jesus himself. This separation would be a great tragedy. With all that is happening, we need to stay close to Jesus Christ and His Church, and fight against the evils that have pervaded the Church. We need to image Jesus hanging on the cross between two sinners. To find Jesus, at times, we often need to look past many sinners and dreadful realities. I am confident Jesus Christ will see us through. If we leave the Church and her traditions, we become victims of evil, as well.

Page 33 Page

With the changing world culture, we all live in greater diversity. On Monday at 7:00 PM in the high school auditorium, we are hosting an evening entitled "Sharing Our Lives." There will be three Imams from the Muslim community and three presenters from the Catholic Church. It will be a very informative evening that will help us live together in peace and charity. I look forward to seeing you there! In Peace, Fr. Jim Bilot

Evangelical Charity This week, I would like to share with you an excerpt from Unleash the Gospel on the topic of evangelical charity and how it is essential attracting others to a relationship with the Lord. Here is the excerpt from the Archbishop’s letter:

St. Vincent de Paul Top Hat Collection, for the poor, will be this weekend and also representatives will be in the Gathering Room taking names for the annual “Friends of the Poor” walk. Please be generous and please join us!

All those who love the poor in life, will have nothing to fear from death. St. Vincent de Paul Feast day September 27

Marker 8.4 Evangelical Charity Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. Matthew 5:16 Our service to the poor and marginalized needs to be a clear witness to Jesus our Lord, not mistaken for humanist philanthropy. Catholics around the world and in our local Church have developed a remarkable network of charitable programs for health care, disaster relief, hunger alleviation, poverty reduction, refugee aid, family services, counseling, and help for people in every form of need. We must continue and intensify these works of service that manifest God's love to those around us. In recent decades, however, there has been a tendency for Catholic charitable work to become separated from our primary calling to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It is time to overcome that distinction. We need to ensure that in ministering to the material needs of others we are also responding to their spiritual thirst for God. Every Catholic charitable work must also be an authentic expression of Catholic faith. We must be unabashed to speak the name of Jesus and to invite every person to the fullness of life in him. The world needs the light that is in Christ alone. -Fr. Matthew Hood The text of the letter can be found online at UnleashTheGospel.org (section 4.8.4 of Unleash the Gospel)

Local: probate judges, county commissioners, and various other local, township, and municipal representatives. Statewide: Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, two state Supreme Court justices, 110 House of Representative seats, and 38 State Senate seats. Federal: one of Michigan’s U.S. Senate seats, and each of the 14 representatives in Michigan’s Congressional delegation.

Additionally, at least three and perhaps up to five questions will appear on the statewide ballot that address a wide-range of policy issues. With a crowded ballot, a great deal of candidate information to sift through and, at times, vocal and bitter partisanship in the public realm, it might be tempting for busy and well-meaning Catholic voters to avoid voting. However, the concept of Faithful Citizenship teaches that each person has the responsibility to participate in political life—with a well-formed conscience. Furthermore, the principles outlined in the U.S. bishops’ election document, Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, remind Catholics that they can help transform politics. This process is about more than polls, partisan rhetoric, and individual interests. Instead, the Church urges Catholics to participate with an eye toward moral principles and the common good. The Catholic Church does not tell her flock for which candidates to vote, but does seek to share Catholic teaching on a range of issues present in the public square. From there, it is the job of individual Catholics to weigh their choices and make decisions that advance the common good, in light of a well-formed conscience. At times, Catholics of goodwill may disagree on the best way to address or weigh a certain prudential issue; yet protecting the life and dignity of the human person and modeling respectful dialogue are not up for debate. micatholic.org

If you wish to vote in the upcoming election this November, you must register to vote by October 9.

YOUR NEW BISHOP FOLEY OFFICERS INSTALLED for 2018/19 FRATERNAL YEAR Two weeks ago, outgoing Foley Chaplain Fr. Gary Morelli celebrated Mass with about thirty Foley Knights and their families. The evening Mass was a perfect way to inaugurate the newly elected officers of Divine Child’s Bishop Foley Knights of Columbus Council. werwerewrwerwerwerwerwerwerwerwe Nine members from Monsignor Schulte Assembly Color Guard were there to add a touch of flair and regality to the Mass and Installation. District 5 Deputy Jim Pease was assisted by District 5 Warden Gene Gross to administer the officer’s oath of office and bestow the “officer’s jewel” to signify each man’s leadership role. Members from Foley Council served the Mass as presider, deacon, sacristan, lectors, cantor, extraordinary ministers and altar servers were sons of members. It was a great way for knights and our families to come together to worship God and celebrate our brotherhood. After Mass, nearly 100 people stayed to share a meal catered by Halina’s Catering. All in all it was a great evening and we are pumped for another great year for our council and the work we do in our parish and community.

The Poor Walk will take place next weekend, September 29, at Belle Isle. Registration on that day is at 9 am. The Poor Walk begins at 10 am. Free lunch, refreshments, and dessert is offered after the Poor Walk. At the halfway point on the trail, there will be bottled water and fruit to fortify the walker on his/her way back to the shelter area. To surpass last year’s record-breaker, which had 700 participants who raised over $64,000. Specifically, officials hope to attract 1,000 walkers this year with a funding goal of $100,000. We hope you entertain the thought of walking for a good cause, while enjoying a magnificent autumn walk. Representatives will be in the Gathering Room this weekend, taking names for the Walk.
