Ministry to Families As we return to our ongoing reflection on Unleash the Gospel by Archbishop Vigneron, this week, we will focus on the importance of families in our work of evangelization. In the document, the Archbishop says that, “Families are at the very heart of our archdiocesan effort to unleash the Gospel, because they are the first and most important setting in which evangelization takes place.” This first and most important setting is the best and most important place for evangelization to take place. The family has been called the “domestic church” because of the privileged role that it has in the transmission of faith. It is the family that is always meant to be the primary place of growth in discipleship and formation in the faith. Many of us have stories about learning aspects and practices of the faith from parents and grandparents which have made us the disciples that we are today. It is in the family that the faith “takes on flesh” or becomes “incarnate.” The idea that children will grow up to practice their faith simply because they went to Catholic school is no longer the case. The faith needs to be actively lived and practiced in the home. All the major studies also conclude that the father has a particularly important role in maintaining that his children will keep the faith. A large study conducted by the Swiss government from 1994 to 2000 revealed that “It is the religious practice of the father of the family that, above all, determines the future attendance at or absence from the church of the children.” The same study reported: 1. If both father and mother attend regularly, 33 percent of their children will end up as regular churchgoers, and 41 percent will end up attending irregularly. Only a quarter of their children will end up not practicing at all. 2. If the father is irregular and mother regular, only 3 percent of the children will subsequently become regulars themselves, while a further 59 percent will become irregulars. Thirty-eight percent will be lost. 3. If the father is non-practicing and mother regular, only 2 percent of children will become regular worshippers, and 37 percent will attend irregularly. Over 60 percent of their children will be lost completely to the church! A vital part of our work here at the parish must then be to work to minister to fathers in a special way to equip them to be spiritual leaders in their family. We must also do much to help equip all mothers in their vital responsibilities as well. If the work of evangelization is to

be effective then families are the main battleground. Let us seek the intercession of the Holy Family and the holy mothers and fathers in the communion of saints for this effort! Fr. Matthew Hood The text of the letter can be found online at the site UnleashTheGospel.org. (Section 4.7 of Unleash the Gospel)

Capuchin Rope Bakers A ministry of the Capuchin Soup Kitchen On August 18 - 19, the men from On the Rise Bakery will be here in the Gathering Room selling their delicious baked goods. Please support this worthy cause! The bakers are men who have recently been released from prison or have completed a substance abuse treatment program. They truly want to change their lives. As you support this ministry, remember the words of our Lord, “I was in prison and you came to visit me … I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.” -Matthew 25:36, 40

What’s in the ‘Z’ Dear Friends,

July 25, 2018 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I write to you today to share another in my series of pastoral notes. This note, Living Christ’s Love, concerns the good news of who God is, what Jesus has done, and who He has made us regarding human sexuality. Fifty years ago today, Blessed Pope Paul VI released Humanae Vitae (“On Human Life”), his encyclical on the truth about love and human sexuality. Earlier this year, the auxiliary bishops of Detroit and I preached on the importance of Paul VI’s encyclical to society today. You can watch each of those homilies by visiting www.aod.org/hv50th. In the decades since the release of Humanae Vitae, many voices in our culture have presented other ideas that veer from God’s plan about the nature of marital life and about human sexuality. These opinions have become so dominant in our culture that we are at a crisis point. It’s never been easy for Christians to live up to the teachings of Jesus and to live lives of virtue. This is especially true in our day, when we live in such a highlysexualized culture that teaches us that the most important source of happiness is sexual satisfaction. All the more, we disciples of Jesus Christ are called to give witness to His vision. In being God’s witnesses, we find ourselves going against the cultural stream. As difficult as that is, we know that Jesus appreciates it and is grateful for how, by our example and our word, we invite others to become part of His work, His flock, and His new creation. When we persevere in living as God’s children, we can be sure that we will live with Him forever in Heaven with all those we love. With assurance of my prayers to Our Blessed Mother and to St. Joseph for you, and of my gratitude for your faithful witness to the teachings of Jesus Christ. Sincerely yours in Christ, The Most Reverend Allen H. Vigneron UNLEASH THE GOSPEL 12 State Street, Detroit, Michigan 48226-1823 | 313-237-5800 | aod.org

On May 7, I began my three-month internship at Divine Child, and I can’t believe that on August 4/5, I will be saying farewell as I head back to seminary to begin my third year of Theology. First and foremost, I want to thank Almighty God for blessing me with an outstanding parish assignment. Every one of you has blessed with me with your kindness, generosity, and love! I have been blessed by the tremendous faith of so many who call Divine Child home. The unity and strong love you have for this parish community, the wonderful devotion and love that is shown here for the Sacraments -- particularly the Eucharist -- the deep devotion of praying for priests, vocations, and seminarians, the excellence of the Divine Child schools, and many more wonderful attributes are what make this parish amazing! I also wish to thank Fr. Jim for being an outstanding example of a diocesan parish priest. Fr. Jim has been patient, kind, encouraging, supportive, and willing to push me and help me to grow and be the best I can be! He is a priest I very much have come to look up to and admire for his love of service and dedication to excellence. The greatest lesson I have learned from him is to never look down, or up, but to keep looking straight (although the origin of this saying probably came from Lynda!). I also wish to thank Fr. Matt for his support, energy, and willingness to help me and guide me. I also thank Fr. Tom and all of the parish staff who have been so kind, welcoming, and encouraging. I am entering my third year of Theology, which means that in April, God willing, I will be ordained a transitional deacon. Please keep me in your prayers that I may be faithful to the call and continue to grow in all aspects needed to be a good and holy priest. I realize I am not perfect; so, for all my imperfections, and for anyone I may have hurt, I ask forgiveness. Be blessed and be a blessing! The Divine Child community will always be near and dear to me and, for all of you, I am grateful. If you would like to contact me in the seminary, please email me at Chabaan.zaid@shms.edu. Your brother in Christ, Zaid Chabaan

You’re invited to the series UNLOCKING THE MYSTERY OF THE BIBLE from Ascension Press What will I learn from this series? Unlocking the Mystery of the Bible series focuses on the story that runs throughout Scripture so that we can see the “big picture” of the Bible. This story is God’s plan as it has unfolded in history and connues to unfold today. How will this make a difference to me? The Bible is at the heart of our faith and our relaonship with God. When we grasp the story of God’s marvelous plan, the Mass readings begin to make more sense, our Scripture reading comes to life, and we see how our lives fit into God’s loving plan. Who is this series intended for? Unlocking the Bible series is for everyone – teens and adults. The aim of this program is to make the complex simple – to give us a way to read the Bible and understand it…and so to experience its life-changing power. What can I expect at each session? Well-respected Bible scholar, Jeff Cavins will present a 30minute video teaching on the twelve me periods of biblical history and inspiring “take aways” for our life today. The video is followed by small group discussion led by a parish facilitator.

Why is small group discussion necessary? The group discussion helps parcipants recall and absorb the content of the video presentaon and fosters community. What is the cost for the program? $20 material fee provides you with a 76-page color illustrated workbook with references, The Bible Timeline chart, The Bible Timeline bookmark, and an online access code for the videos from Ascension Press. Are other supplies needed? Yes, every parcipant should have a Catholic edion of the Bible. I can’t aend every week. Can I sll parcipate? Yes!! Come to as many of the weekly lessons as possible. The materials cost provides online access to all the videos, so you can keep up with the series. Is this series only for Divine Child parishioners? Everyone is welcome! In fact, we hope that you bring a friend (or two). I’m not sure this series is right for me… Just give it a try. You have everything to gain! The Bible is not a subject to master: it is a place to meet the living word of God. Approach this series with a goal of meeng God, and prepare to be transformed!

A A letter letter to to the the parents parentswho whokeep keep disruptive kids kidsto to bringing their their disruptive bringing Mass, week week after afterweek week Mass, Christ had had something something pretty pretty important important to to say say about about people people like like us. us. Christ Dear exhausted, discouraged parents,

Just like the woman's two small coins into the collection box look like nothing in comparison with the rich man's gigantic bag of gold, our contribution looks so small a person might wonder why we even bother. Why even come to Mass, if you're just going to spend the whole time doing toddler damage control? But Christ is there to remind us that He doesn't see what the rest of the world sees.

So your kids are just terrible in Mass. Chaotic, disobedient, and disruptive, week after week. It's like a big old spotlight is shining on you the whole time, you and your apparently sub-par parenting, I'm right there with you. I've started to dread Sundays. I mean, we've tried everything. Going to the early Mass, going to the evening Mass, Mass books, whispered explanations, whispered threats, sitting in the front, sitting in the back, marching straight to the cry room ... and maybe a few of the tricks have helped, but the bottom line is that we're not getting out of that building without somebody screaming, making a mad dash for the altar, or God knows what.

Pretty often, I leave Mass feeling like the whole thing was a bust. I didn't even manage to follow along, and I left so fast I forgot to genuflect. What kind of a Catholic am I? If that's how you feel too, don't forget - having little kids, or kids with special needs, or whatever situation you're in that makes it impossible to kneel quietly and listen carefully, this is a unique kind of poverty. And we, in our poverty, really do give all we have, just by doing our best. Even if our best is just showing up.

But in spite of it all, every week, I and my loud, chaotic family are going to be there (in the back!) wiggling around and distracting everyone, and subjecting ourselves to the judgment of a large number of people who might not understand how hard it actually is to teach a toddler to sit quietly for 45 minutes. It looks insane. Still, we button up our wrinkled Sunday clothes anyway, and get our bodies under that roof, just like Mother Church asks us to.

So don't stop. And please don't worry too much about how your family looks. Even if it never gets easier, keep doing what you are doing, and know that even when the world doesn't, God sees how valuable your sacrifice is. Anna O’Neill Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston July 21, 2018

I want you to know that if this is you too, that's okay. It's better than okay. Christ had something pretty important to say about people like us: When [Jesus] looked up he saw some wealthy people putting their offerings into the treasury and he noticed a poor widow putting in two small coins. He said, "I tell you truly, this poor widow put in more than all the rest; for those others have all made offerings from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has offered her whole livelihood." (Luke 21:1-4) Isn't this exactly what We are doing? We are giving it literally all we've got, in obeying the Church's request to make it to Sunday Mass. (Sheer embarrassment, unfortunately, isn't a good enough reason to stay home.) To the outside world, it looks like we've done the bare minimum. We've gotten into the building, sure, but are we concentrating? Are we having a spiritual experience? Did we even hear a word of the Gospel, for heaven's sake? It doesn't look like much. We are the only ones who know how much we are really giving. But Christ knows, too.

FOOD FOR THE JOURNEY! "I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst." We hear these familiar words in John’s Gospel today. It is likely that we have heard these words hundreds of times throughout our lifetime. Jesus speaking to the people of Israel telling them that he had bread that would fill them so they would never be hungry. The people were excited to learn of this food that would fill their bodily need. Of course, we have the privilege of hindsight to know that Jesus was talking about Himself; sacrificing Himself to give us what we need to sustain and to help us into our eternal life with God our Father. But do we really appreciate that hindsight? Do we really know the gift we have as Catholics, right here before us, in our tabernacles and at our Mass? Years ago, Father Jim gave a thought provoking homily that lives with me today. When talking about the Real Presence of the Eucharist, he said how Jesus lives in us and grows in us every time we receive Him in Holy Communion. Most times we don’t feel the immediate effect of Jesus in the Eucharist when we consume the host at Holy Communion; we may feel as if we are “going through the motions” and why do we do this. However, the POWER of the Eucharist makes Itself known when we are in most need of our Lord. During our darkest hours of grief, mourning, sickness, sorrow, hardship or anytime we feel alone, Jesus fills us with His love. It is that “stored up Jesus” if you will, that helps get us through to the next level. When we have Jesus in our heart and in our soul, we are never alone. One of the best ways to have that intimacy with our Lord is to receive Him in the Eucharist on a regular basis. Another way to receive Jesus is through Eucharistic Adoration, whether exposed on the altar or simply spending time before the tabernacle. The Eucharist is strong within the Knights of Columbus. Our reverence and devotion to the Eucharist is so strong, that we are called to protect and revere Its very essence.

Have you been thinking of becoming a Knight of Columbus?

Do you want to be part of the largest Catholic men’s fraternity in the world? If you are not a Knight and would like more information on becoming a Knight, look for our upcoming Membership Drive – after weekend Masses, August 18th & 19th. Foley Knights will be around after Masses to answer questions and recruit for our Major Degree scheduled for September 23rd. Please use this time to explore what the Knights do. If you don’t feel comfortable talking to someone, then go to www.KofC.org to see for yourself the good works we brother knights do throughout the world, around the community and within your parish. Then call and talk to us -313-212-1835.

Family + Church = A Strong Knights of Columbus Council

Church + Knights of Columbus = Strong Families

Knights of Columbus + Families = Strong Church and Parish

No matter how you slice it, the math makes sense! Foley Knights want a man like you! Foley Knights are holding a Membership Drive just for you: See a Foley Knight after Mass on August 18th or 19th and see how YOU can become a Knight of Columbus. As a member of our council, you will strengthen your faith and become a better Catholic, husband and father. By strengthening your faith, family and friendship we will build a stronger parish. Through the support of our parish and community, you will form friendships with brother Knights that can last a lifetime.

As much good as our council has done over the past year, we could do even more with your help. We invite you to join our council and help us make a difference in our parish and community! If you will be out of town that weekend and miss this opportunity, you can always call Steve Lentz our Foley Membership Director, he can answer any questions you may have – 313-949-5162

St. Vincent de Paul How Does Jesus Nourish Us? According to Sacred Space, there are several answers: “By giving us his Word in the Scriptures. In this way he feeds our minds and hearts, enriches and gives meaning and direction to our lives. The Word of God in the scriptures is really food, and in so far as the bible is unknown to us, we are being starved of food that we really need.” a.

Through his Church: through the fellowship and mutual support we get through our involvement and participation in a Christian community. Through every loving and nourishing experience coming to us through people, books, radio, tv, the world of nature-in short, through everything which enriches and gives more meaning and understanding in our lives, increases our feeling of being loved and of self-worth. Through the Eucharist, the sign by which we celebrate God’s love shown to us through the life, suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and where we give thanks for all the nourishing ways by which God, through Jesus, comes into our daily lives. The fact that we are indeed being fed and nourished is shown by the way we live our lives and share what we have received with others who are still hungry for life and meaning. As the letter to the Ephesians says in today’s Second Reading: "Your mind must be renewed by a spiritual revolution so that you can put on the new self that has been created in God’s way, in the goodness and holiness of the truth.

This is exactly what happens when we have been fed by the Bread of Life. Consequently, this “Bread of Life” spurs us on to care for others, and with that said, the SVdP sincerely thanks everyone who have been contributing to our monthly food collection for St. Sebastian Parish and Nativity Parish. God bless you. ~~Mindy Delano
