Powerful Witness of Families One of the most powerful witnesses to the Gospel that we have in the Church is family life lived well! Each of us were made for relationship. When we were created by God, God wanted to share His own life with us. God created us out of love for love with Himself. God is love because God is not static. Instead, God is a dynamic communion of persons. The best way that the communal love of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit is lived out is in the family. The communion of persons that exists in family life is a sign of God’s own love for us. God’s love for us, like family life, is permanent, lasting, faithful and sacrificial. When family life is lived to its fullest potential, we can see into the very heart of God. While this might seem like a lofty insight for the highs and lows of family life, a family doesn’t have to be the “ideal family” to be one that points to God. Archbishop Vigneron, in Unleash the Gospel, urges “I encourage families who are living the Gospel to exercise radical generosity in inviting others to share in your family life, even if you are well aware that it is not perfect.” Being a family that is mission-focused is not about being perfect but about extending the love of your family to others. It is a paradox that when love is shared, it is never lost. The same is true in the family. Don’t be afraid to show others the importance of faith in your family and how it lays the foundation for the rest of your family life. Here is some practical advice from Archbishop Vigneron on how families can be a powerful witness to the love of Christ: • Engage in a ministry or ongoing service project as a family • Invite singles and young people to attend Mass with your family or share meals with them on a regular basis • Serve as mentors to newly married couples • Be a witness to those who are unchurched, whether they are family or friends, by praying before meals when you invite them to your home I would encourage every family to spend time this week asking the Lord how you might respond as a family to the call to evangelize. Ask the Lord how your life might be a more effective beacon leading others to the love of Christ. Jesus, the Divine Child, have mercy on us. Mary, the Mother of God, pray for us. St. Joseph, head of the Holy Family, pray for us. St. Joachim and St. Anne, grandparents of Jesus, pray for us. Fr. Matthew Hood The text of the letter can be found online at the site UnleashTheGospel.org (Section 4.7.3 of Unleash the Gospel)

Why do Catholics have processions? Processions are an important feature of Catholic culture. They are a world-wide custom going back to our Jewish roots. Catholic processions are a form of pilgrimage first undertaken by the Jews to represent important historical events. Catholics have developed many processions for special occasions to remind us that the Christian life is a constant movement toward God and our eternal home. We can also make processions a practice in the family faith life (domestic church). It may seem like a simple practice but it makes an impression on children, especially if parents participate, and will help to make the feast more concrete and significant.

Capuchin Rope Bakers will be here next weekend. Please support this ministry of the Capuchin Soup Kitchen On August 18 - 19, the men from On the Rise Bakery will be here in the Gathering Room selling their delicious baked goods.

You’re invited to the series UNLOCKING THE MYSTERY OF THE BIBLE from Ascension Press What will I learn from this series? Unlocking the Mystery of the Bible series focuses on the story that runs throughout Scripture so that we can see the “big picture” of the Bible. This story is God’s plan as it has unfolded in history and connues to unfold today. How will this make a difference to me? The Bible is at the heart of our faith and our relaonship with God. When we grasp the story of God’s marvelous plan, the Mass readings begin to make more sense, our Scripture reading comes to life, and we see how our lives fit into God’s loving plan. Who is this series intended for? Unlocking the Bible series is for everyone – teens and adults. The aim of this program is to make the complex simple – to give us a way to read the Bible and understand it…and so to experience its life-changing power. What can I expect at each session? Well-respected Bible scholar, Jeff Cavins will present a 30minute video teaching on the twelve me periods of biblical history and inspiring “take aways” for our life today. The video is followed by small group discussion led by a parish facilitator.

Why is small group discussion necessary? The group discussion helps parcipants recall and absorb the content of the video presentaon and fosters community. What is the cost for the program? A $20 material fee provides you with a 76-page color illustrated workbook with references, The Bible Timeline chart, The Bible Timeline bookmark, and an online access code for the videos from Ascension Press. Are other supplies needed? Yes, every parcipant should have a Catholic edion of the Bible. I can’t aend every week. Can I sll parcipate? Yes!! Come to as many of the weekly lessons as possible. The materials cost provides online access to all the videos, so you can keep up with the series. Is this series only for Divine Child parishioners? Everyone is welcome! In fact, we hope that you bring a friend (or two). I’m not sure this series is right for me… Just give it a try. You have everything to gain! The Bible is not a subject to master: it is a place to meet the living word of God. Approach this series with a goal of meeng God, and prepare to be transformed!

St. Vincent de Paul A Crate Bed? What’s that? Going “bed shopping” is mind boggling with all the choices and options, especially meeting certain needs such as one’s unique health condition, budget, and aesthetic attractiveness. But have you ever heard of a “crate bed?” Recently, a Vincentian had a client needing assistance with a rental deposit, which wasn’t exactly cheap, but when he discovered his client had certain medical restrictions, the issue of the bed and the discovery that it was a crate bed was certainly a subject which the Vincentian couldn’t wrap his head around. The client, being poor, obtained some wooden crates, ones that are free and usually piled up at the rear of a market. She approximated the size of the crates to match her body shape. Hence, an “x” number of crates for the width, and an “x” number of crates accommodating for her height. Then, there was the dilemma of the mattress, right? At a box store, she found foam, like the egg shape foam “topper” that some people buy to place on an existing mattress to make it more supportive and comfy. But this client used the foam and stapled the edges down around the perimeter of the crates. Voila, a “crate bed.” Appalling, right? Hmmm. I bet you’re shaking your head at the prospect that some people are in such dire straits. May the Lord abundantly bless you for your contributions to our St. Vincent de Paul Conference. With your assistance, our Vincentian tossed the crate bed, and was able to purchase an appropriate bed and mattress at one of our St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Stores. The client was extremely grateful. God bless you for your kindness and compassion for the poor. ~~Mindy Delano

The Memorare Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

I have never been baptized, and desire to learn more about the Catholic faith. I was baptized Catholic, but never received the sacrament of Conirmation and desire to receive it. I was baptized in another Christian denomination and desire to learn more about the Catholic Church. I have children who are 7 years or older who have never been baptized and desire them to be baptized.

Living the Gospel There is a saying, “When Big, Go Small! Small faith sharing groups have proven to be the most effective way to form community where members can bring faith to life. With small groups, members can grow deeper in their relationship with Christ by breaking open the Word of God, engaging in meaningful conversation, and committing to care for one another. Each Thursday, after the 8:30 am Mass, is a good investment when the payoff is: feeling more refreshed, feeling more connected to the parish community, and most importantly, feeling more deeply involved in your relationship with Jesus. Friendship, fellowship and a deepening of faith await you! Come any or every Thursday! We meet in the Gathering Room immediately following 8:30 Mass.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS •

Knights of Columbus was started by a parish priest in 1882. Fr. Michael McGivney started the organization to protect Catholic men and their families and started a fund to support widows and orphans. He is up for canonization. Knights of Columbus is the world’s largest Catholic fraternal organization with nearly 2 million members worldwide. Knights of Columbus have councils in over a dozen different countries. Knights of Columbus stood up to ISIS. The Order produced a 280-page report for the U.S. State Department detailing the genocide of Christians, giving the State Department the evidence to deal with this atrocity as genocide. Knights of Columbus are saving a Christian town in Iraq that was desecrated by ISIS by raising $2 million to save Karamles, which was recently liberated from ISIS. Christopher Columbus was chosen as the Knights’ namesake because the American public loved this Catholic explorer at a time of general antipathy toward Catholics. Today, many make him out to be a villain, but many of those claims are actually historically inaccurate. The KofC emblem is literally everywhere at the annual March for Life in Washington DC. The Knights of Columbus has donated $1.62 BILLION to charitable causes over the past decade. Some Knights have swords! The KofC Insurance Company was born from Fr. McGivney’s vision to help keep Catholic families from financial ruin. Knights of Columbus founder Fr. Michael J. McGivney may become a saint! His cause for canonization is open, and was given the title “Venerable Servant of God” by the Holy See in 2008. Some Knights are already saints! St. Luis Batis, St. Rodrigo Aguilar, St. Miguel de la Mora, St. Pedro de Jesus Maldonado, St. Jose Maria Robles and St. Mateo Correa were martyred during the Catholic persecution in Mexico in the early 20th century. Knights of Columbus stood as the Ku Klux Klan’s most vigorous opponent. In 1924, hooded Klansmen abducted, beat and mutilated Fr. Conoley in Florida. Knights armed with shotguns stood in the windows of the rectory protecting other priests and the church from the Klan’s threats to burn it. Knights of Columbus have been a HUGE supporter of Special Olympics since day one. Babe Ruth, Vince Lombardi and President John Kennedy were all Knights of Columbus. You can thank the Knights of Columbus for having the words “one nation under God” added to the Pledge of Allegiance.

Knights of Columbus had a long standing relationship with St. Mother Teresa. When receiving an award from the Knights she said, “I accepted to come, and to accept out of sheer gratitude, for they have done so much for our congregation and for our poor.” Knights of Columbus are major supporters of priestly vocations! Councils around the world “adopt” seminarians and provide them with financial assistance and prayer. Foley Council is currently adopting three seminarians. Knights of Columbus have Asset Advisors whose team manages $24 billion in assets in accordance with Catholic moral principles. Both the first American and the last American to fall in World War I were Knights of Columbus. In 2018, Knights of Columbus sent more than 200 military personnel, their designated caregivers and volunteers to the Marian shrine in Lourdes, France, for a time of rest, prayer and healing as part of the annual Warriors to Lourdes pilgrimage. The St. John Paul II National Shrine is a major initiative of the Knights of Columbus. There are 374 (and growing) Knights of Columbus councils on college campuses around the world. The Knights of Columbus are on a mission to save 1 million lives. Since 2009, the Knights have funded about 900 ultrasound machines at pregnancy centers in all 50 states.

CSA Minute: Sacred Heart Major Seminary/Institute for Ministry Many students are registering for classes at Sacred Heart Major Seminary this month, thanks to Parish Empowerment Fund scholarships funded by gifts to the Catholic Services Appeal. Our major seminary not only prepares men for ordination to the priesthood and the permanent diaconate, it offers degree and certificate programs for lay women and men seeking to be “new evangelists for the new millennium” at the Institute for Ministry. Through discernment and theological reflection, the institute guides and challenges commuter students to deepen their commitment to spiritual growth, attend to their call, and identify their gifts for service in the Church. For more information about Sacred Heart Major Seminary or the Institute for Ministry, please go to www.shms.edu. For more information about CSA-funded ministries, programs, and services, please go to www.aod.org.
