Things Above from Fr. Bilot Wow, here it is July 1st already! Time certainly moves us along! I hope that you are taking time for prayer and reflection this summer. Whether we go outside to walk, ride a bike, or just sit and enjoy the beauty of the weather, it is important to do a review of our life. We can ask ourselves where have we been, where are we now, and where are we going? Is the Lord Jesus the focus of my life’s review? Is the direction of my life leading me to truth, goodness and beauty?

Are the New Year’s resolutions that we made last January (if we made any) being achieved? Are we taking the time to pick up our Bible and ponder on the teachings of Jesus and His life? The Lord’s teachings and actions bring great solace and insight into our lives, giving us purpose and focus. We can get so caught up in “doing what we do” that we lose focus of the bigger picture: our life with Jesus.

Wednesday is July 4th-- a national holiday. I would like to see you for Mass at 9:00 AM so that we can all give thanks to God for our freedom, our country and the many blessings we receive because we live in the United States. I look at the immigration issues and people taking great risks to leave their country for a better way of living: a life of safety, peace and security. I realize that as a country, we need directives/rules/ laws that protect the dignity of our lives and our country. We must also work toward helping other people have peace and freedom in their own countries.

However, the separation of children from their parents is appalling and a humanitarian crisis. This is not who we are called to be as Christian Catholics. I ask that you let our government officials know this is a moral evil and goes against who we are as a nation that was established to protect the family. People fleeing from their country to protect their families and then being separated is absolutely wrong. People should not be afraid to leave their homes because a gang member is outside ready and willing to abduct or kill them.

(This is one example of what is happening with illegal immigration, and there are many others; I chose to use this one as an example.)

People join a gang (mostly teens and college-age men and women) for many reasons, but the bottom line is they are looking to belong. Crazy to think someone would join a group that promotes violence, hatred and death. Yet, in looking at gang members, many of them come from broken homes, abandoned or thrown to the side, and the gang organization picks them up and tells them they are “cared for,” “protected,” and “safe” if someone does what they tell them. Or, they are threatened to join or die. At the core, many gang members don’t value their lives.

They have not experienced unconditional love.

Our prayer, our works, must always show the world that all life has purpose and meaning because God only creates in goodness. And family life is the core of the domestic church.

Without the family structure, our nation cannot stand strong.

People should not have to leave their country to secure safety and prosperity for themselves or their family. Evil is doing a great job at trying to destroy. Yet, through the power of Jesus Christ, we can overcome evil with goodness and hope. I realize the issue of immigration is very complex.

For us as Catholics, it is important that we work together to promote the dignity of individual life and family life. How do we do that? What is the Lord calling each of us to do? Let us take time to ponder, as we enjoy our freedom, to see how the Lord is calling us to help. Again, please attend Divine Child’s Mass on July 4th at 9:00 AM. We have so much to be grateful for and so much to pray for.

Enjoy the beauty of the day and take some time to walk the grounds here at Divine Child.

Humanae Vitae at 50 Years This month marks the 50th anniversary of Blessed Pope Paul VI’s encyclical letter Humanae V itae on the Church’s position on the use of artificial contraception. Before Humanae V itae was released on July 25, 1968, the Pope asked for a commission to be formed to study the issue more intently. While the results of the commission were mixed, the Pope clearly taught that the use of contraception was a violation of the moral law and should not be used.

The reaction that is often given when presenting the Church’s teaching on contraception is that this doctrine is a “thorny issue” that can be hidden and not really discussed.

However, the Church’s prohibition of contraception should not be looked at as bad news. Instead, it needs to be presented as profoundly good news about human sexuality.

For some, this might seem far-fetched, but I would invite you to please consider how this teaching is not only good news but should be celebrated. During the next four weeks of July, I plan on reflecting on a different aspect of this encyclical which I hope will foster consideration, prayer and study.

In the encyclical, the Pope refrains from diving into questions of morality right away to instead take a step back and look at the beauty of marriage and sexuality. The foundation of a proper understanding of marriage is the realization that marriage is a result of God’s loving plan for humanity. The Pope states that “Marriage (…) is not the effect of chance or the product of evolution of blind natural forces; it is a wise institution of the Creator for realizing in mankind His design of love” (HV, 8). As the author of marriage, God “wrote” a law into it for it’s growth and flourishing. The law which governs marriage was not arbitrarily given nor is it something that lies in our control. As individuals, we are stewards of this mystery and not creators of it. It is not our role to change what marriage is but to serve its noble purpose and promote its welfare.

Five characteristics of marriage that are highlighted in the encyclical are that the love in marriage is meant to be human, total, faithful, exclusive and fruitful. In saying that the love in marriage must be human, it means that as human beings, we are both physical and spiritual. We are both body and soul. We are not just a collection of feelings, instincts and desires but we also possess a body which helps reveal our identity. Marital love is also meant to be total in that it is not self-serving but “a very special form of personal friendship” where everything is meant to be shared between them.

Jealousy, ambition and suspicion which are so prevalent in the world should not exist in a healthy marriage. Marriage is both faithful and exclusive because love is not temporary. For love to be lasting, it must be more than a feeling but a decision to continue loving no matter what. Finally, married love is fruitful both in the shared joys of married life and also, primarily, in bringing new lives into existence. The fruitful dimension of marriage reminds us that love is meant to be life-giving and it is not divided up when it is shared but instead it is multiplied.

These five characteristics are what need to be preserved in marriages and what Blessed Pope Paul VI gave us to begin to understand the teachings of Humanae V itae.

Some people complain because God put thorns on roses, while others praise Him for putting roses among thorns.

July is a an important month for many, especially for us Americans, as we celebrate our Nation’s birth and founding. What a blessing it is to live in the land of the free and the home of the brave! As well as the Fourth of July holiday, July is a time when many families spend time together on vacation at the cottage, etc. Rest and relaxation are very much needed. As I might have shared with some of you, my first job in high school was working at McDonald’s, where I ended up working for six years. One of the things I did whenever I traveled to another country was visit a McDonald’s and get a tray liner from the lobby as a souvenir. I have also asked a friend of mine who works in the military, and who travels often, to bring a tray liner with him whenever he travels.

During the summer months, many parishes experience a drop in Mass attendance. While this decrease should be expected, attending Mass while on vacation is just as important. When God consecrated the Sabbath Day and made it a commandment, He did not make a contingent requirement, but being a disciple of Christ is a full-time job! The Church asks us to give God one hour out of a 168-hour week and, although I was never good in math, that sounds like a pretty good deal to me! As we transition to the climax of the summer, let us remember to keep God at the center of our recreation, vacation, stay-cation and, most importantly, our vocation.

We should also remember the desire of King David, who in the Psalms exclaimed, “One thing I ask from the LORD, this only I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the LORD and to seek Him in His temple” ( Psalm 27:4), and may this also be our desire.

P.S. On Sunday, June 24, I was able to advance my Knights of Columbus rank as I received my 2nd and 3rd degree in the order. The Knights of Columbus are an outstanding example and witness in our Church. I have personally benefitted greatly from the support of the Knights as they work constantly for priests, seminarians, and vocations! Please consider inviting a male in your family to the Knights or supporting their many charitable organizations throughout the year! Venerable Fr. McGivney, pray for us!

Victor Wisniewski, a 3rd grader from the Elementary School, was recently diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Victor has started his cancer treatments which have been a little rough, so we thought we could ask our DC Family to lift his spirits by sending him a Get-Well greeting card.

As we prepare for the Fourth of July, we should remember that it is more than a holiday for picnics and beach volleyball. We will celebrate the 242nd birthday of our country. Our great country was designed to be a Representative Republic. We do not have a king or a dictator, but elected officials we put into office; like them or not, we have the power of the ballot to put them in or remove them from office. As Americans, we have the luxury of living in the greatest country on earth! Surely, we have been tested with challenges; surely, we have had history we are not proud of; surely, there are some changes that need to be made, but we must never forget how fortunate we are.

It was the foresight of our founding fathers to set limits with checks and balances in our constitution. Our forefathers believed that our country was chosen by God to be a home of freedom, liberty and justice for all. Media today chooses to cover so much disrespect for our country, our leaders and our flag.

It would be easy to assume the majority have lost hope in our country; let me assure you this is not the case. As Catholics we are called to stand up for our faith, as Americans we are asked to do the same. There is an underlying swell of American patriotism that wants to burst with pride. We must collectively work together to turn our nation back to GOD! What do the Knights of Columbus have to do with all this? For most men who follow Jesus, there comes a time when duty extends beyond our own lives, beyond how we lead our families, and into how we serve our fellow man. That's what the Knights of Columbus is all about. The Patriotic Degree (4th Degree) allows Knights to take this responsibility one step further. Knights of the Patriotic Degree stand firm to support the Order and are dedicated to the personal development and honor of brother Knights. We are always there to offer leadership, guidance, and encouragement. Knights of the Patriotic Degree glorify God by serving our communities and nations as though Christ were the one being served. Knights of the Patriotic Degree hold unwaveringly to what is right and honorable, working to keep God in the civic arena, serving the life of the Church, and defending laws that recognize the sanctity of life and true religious liberty. When you enter the service of the 4th Degree, you become a Sir Knight. "Sir Knight" is more than a title. It's an honor.

If you are interested in becoming a Knight of the Fourth Degree, you must first be a 3rd Degree Knight in good standing. There is an exemplification coming up on September 15th. We currently have four Foley Knights preparing to advance to this honored status. The Knights of the Patriotic Fourth Degree meets separately at the Monsignor Schulte Assembly. Please contact me if you are a Knight from ANY council and would like to join the Fourth Degree - 313212-1835.

GROW IN GRATEFUL LOVE A few weeks ago, I discussed the creation of a “Mary Garden,” in an abbreviated SVdP column, and simultaneously, I had written a comprehensive “Mary Garden” story, in approximately 1900 words, in my garden column in the Dearborn Press and Guide on June 3rd. Every once in awhile, I get a “follow-up reaction” to either one of the columns. The story is still available online, just google, Mindy Delano Mary Garden, if you wish to delve into Mary Gardens further.

As a writer who desires to inspire the gentle reader, it is always hoped that words touch other people’s lives, in one way or another. Whether it’s a change in thinking on a topic, or even a behavior change, this suggests the Holy Spirit was pivotal in a progressive change, a change that strengthened the connection between God and that person.

Well, this “Jane Doe” had read the newspaper article and while vacationing on the East coast, she made it a point to stop and see the first Mary Garden, created by a converted Catholic, a philanthropist to Catholic institutions, by the name of Mrs. Lillies. “Jane” stopped into St. Joseph’s church, at Woods Hole, Cape Cod, as well as the adjacent Mary Garden. She indicated that she stopped and sat on a curved cement bench, in view of Mary, overlooking the ocean with a fleet of sailboats, speedboats, and yachts. She realized that this setting forced her to sit and contemplate on her life, of what she did, and what she failed to do. Does this sound familiar?

“Jane” sent me a dozen photos of St. Joseph’s church, the Mary Garden, as well as the “marine” aspect to the setting. I emailed her back and told her that I wished I was there with her, to share in those moments of a very special serenity garden.
