Our Lady of Fatima This past week, we celebrated the feast of Our Lady of Fatima. The feast commemorates the miraculous apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary to three peasant children in Fatima, Portugal in 1917. During this month dedicated to the Blessed Mother, it would be good to learn more about the apparitions at Fatima. After appearing to the little children every month from May 13, 1917 to October 13, 1917, the Blessed Virgin Mary confirmed the witness of the children through the miracle of the sun. On October 13, over 30,000 people witnessed the sun dance across the sky. Before the miracle, everyone was wet and covered in mud. After the miracle, everyone, and their clothes, were completely dry. People in distant cities, who did not know about the children or the apparitions of Mary also witnessed the miracle of the sun. In the summer of 2017, before my ordination to the priesthood, I had the privilege to visit the site of the apparitions of Our Lady. She chose to appear, not to the wise and learned, but to the simple and humble children. Francisco and Jacinta, the two children who died soon after the apparitions, are now both saints and Lucia, the only child to live to adulthood has an open cause for canonization. The message of Our Lady at Fatima was simple calling us to prayer, repentance and devotion to the Rosary by dedicating ourselves to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. It can serve as a welcome call to each one of us during the summer months. May Our Lady of Fatima, pray for us! Fr. Matthew Hood

What’s in the ‘Z’ “In love’s service, only the wounded soldiers can serve.” – Scottish Minister James Stewart The psalmist exclaims, “It is good for me that I was afflicted, that I might learn your statutes” (Ps 119:71). Suffering is part of all our lives. In our Catholic faith, we say that suffering is redemptive, and this can often be difficult to grasp and explain to others. Our attention turns to the Book of Job, where we can learn much about suffering and the question many of us have asked or been asked, “Why would God allow good people to suffer?”. Job himself asked the Lord, “I cry to you for help and you do not answer me; I stand, and you only look at me” (Job 30:20). How many of us have uttered these words to Christ? We will never make sense of suffering until we attain eternal life with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Scriptures offer us many consoling words of the promise that God is with us, even we, I or you don’t see him or feel His presence. The prophet Zephaniah exclaimed, “The Lord God is in your midst, a victorious warrior. He will exult over you with joy, he will be quiet in his love, he will rejoice over you with shouts of joy” (Zephaniah 3:17). This week, let us pray for the grace to unite our sufferings with those of Christ and also have the confidence to stand in solidarity with all those who suffer around us, not only with prayers, but also with words of consolation and encouragement. UPCOMING MEETING DATES: May 29; J une 12 & 26

As our High School Seniors graduate this weekend or in the upcoming weeks, we need to make sure that they enter their “adult” life on the right track. Hopefully as parents, we have worked to build our Domestic Church at home and their new journey will be one of growth not only in maturity and independence, but also in spirituality. Graduating Seniors, you have been given the gift of a Catholic education. Some of you have been in Catholic school for 12 or more years. Congratulations! As you leave the security of the Catholic school environment, you will go into the world with many opportunities and temptations before you. Always remember your roots and the foundation that has grounded you all these years. You will always have your faith; it is up to YOU to practice it! For years you have been taught and expected to do for others in the way of Christian Service. As adults you are still called to help others. One way to continue your Christian Service with the help of other like -minded men is to join the Knights of Columbus. We welcome young men 18 and over and have many college men in our council. We understand that you will not be able to make every meeting or help out at every event. But why not join us and make yourself available to help out and join in when you can? If you are 18 years old and would like to join the largest fraternity of Catholic men that works within the parish and community, then give us a try. You can call the office at 313-212-1835 to get more information. Once you become a Knight you can begin attending meetings and become an active member of the proud brotherhood called Knight of Columbus. Bishop Foley Council meets the second Wednesday of the month right here at Divine Child.

Put on the Armor of God Finally, draw your strength from the Lord and from his mighty power. Put on the armor of God so that you may be able to stand firm against the tactics of the devil. For our struggle is not with flesh and blood but with the principalities, with the powers, with the world rulers of this present darkness, with the evil spirits in the heavens. Therefore, put on the armor of God, that you may be able to resist on the evil day and, having done everything, to hold your ground. So stand fast with your loins girded in truth, clothed with righteousness as a breastplate, and your feet shod in readiness for the gospel of peace. In all circumstances, hold faith as a shield, to quench all [the] flaming arrows of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. -Ephesians 6:10-17

HALF-DAY ENGAGEMENT RETREAT

August 17, 2019 Ste. Anne Detroit. Lunch included. Register at 313-496-1701. Topics covered: Marriage as Mission, Theology of the Body, NFP Compelling Presenters include Erik & Sandee Coules, Nick & Emily Jorgensen, Mark & Colleen Pressprich, Ariel & Kelly Ponce, and Aaron & Mary Wilkerson. They say to begin with the end in mind. And the “end” isn't your wedding day. The end is beyond getting cards reading “Happy 50th Wedding Anniversary!”…..and we want that. We want your success. So we’ve gathered the best young married couples we know to come and share the tools and tactics that have helped them, their marriages and their families to thrive.

“All of us are called to mature in our work as evangelizers. All of us are called to offer others an explicit witness to the saving love of the Lord.” Pope Francis Immersion 2019 is a summer evangelization intensive where evangelists from all over the country gather for prayer, worship, and street evangelization. Our summer intensive is unlike anything you’ve experienced in the Catholic Church before. This is not a normal conference, it is a dynamic hands on experience (15+ hours of street evangelization). It was designed from the ground up to help train, equip, and mobilize Catholics as disciple-makers who proclaim Jesus Christ in the world. Immersion 2019 includes prayer, different kinds of direct evangelization, worship, dynamic talks, breakouts, and fellowship. We will gather together as a community for Mass each day to be spiritually equipped for the encounters the Lord has for each of us. We will have a chance to learn from the other active evangelists as we share best practices and the stories of our daily encounters. Everyone will have the opportunity to receive ministry and to minister to others. Organized by Saint Paul Street Evangelization June 6-9, 2019 Downtown Detroit http://stpaulevangelization.com/immersion-2019/

Water Concerns in Michigan Worldwide, an estimated 2.1 billion people lack access to safely managed drinking water services, and 4.5 billion lack safely managed sanitation services. While it may seem that water safety is a distant worry for developed communities, recent events have shown reason for heightened concern. Greater efforts are needed to protect clean water in Michigan.

Lead: In 2014, Flint r esidents began r eceiving dr inking water from the Flint River after officials switched from the Detroit water system to save costs. Due to a lack of proper controls, Flint River water began corroding service pipes, allowing lead to leach into drinking and bathing water. Unknowingly, thousands of residents absorbed and consumed toxic water with no ability to realize the significance of what was happening. It has taken years to comprehend the extent of the health impact on children and adults. Millions have been spent to replace pipes. Lead is especially dangerous because it attacks the brain and nervous system. In children, lead exposure can lead to behavior and learning problems, hyperactivity and lower IQ, slowed growth, hearing problems, anemia, and in extreme cases, seizure, coma, or death. In adults, lead expo-sure can lead to increased blood pressure and incidence of hypertension, damage to the kidneys, reproductive problems for men and women, and miscarriages or premature births. There is no cure for lead exposure, but there are actions that can be taken to lessen its impact or to prevent future expo-sure, starting with removing the sources of contamination and completing more testing for lead in water sources. PFAS: Michigander s have become mor e familiar recently with the contaminant PFAS, which does not break down easily in the environment or the human body and can easily transfer through the soil into groundwater. PFAS have been commonly found in waterproof, stain-resistant, or nonstick products; food packaging; commercial household products such as paints, cleaning products, or firefighting foams; and production facilities or industries such as electronics manufacturing. In 2016, the Environmental Protection Agency

Page 19 Page 19

(EPA) issued a lifetime health advisory, or warning, for the two most studied PFAS, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), at 70 parts per trillion. While much remains unknown, studies have demonstrated that exposure to certain PFAS may result in adverse health effects: lowering a woman’s chance of becoming pregnant, changing the body’s immune responses, increasing cholesterol levels, increasing the likelihood of high blood pressure during pregnancy, and increasing the chances of thyroid disease and cancer (especially kidney and testicular). The State of Michigan formed a PFAS Action Response Team (MPART) in 2017, bringing together health and environmental experts with representatives of state government. The team investigates sources and locations of PFAS contamination, informs the public about their results, and takes protective action.

Affordability The lack of clean and affordable drinking water for many individuals living in poverty demands a greater response from policymakers and community leaders. Pope Francis has written that the poor “are denied the right to a life consistent with their inalienable dignity” and are owed a “grave social debt” by the world. Low-income residents are often left behind when communities focus only on short-term consequences, politics, or finances when making decisions that affect water access.7 Supplying quality water to Michigan residents re-quires investment, and those expenses are an important reality to consider when decisions about water are made. At the same time, water affordability must be a key discussion point for the benefit of all Michiganders, including those most for-gotten by society. When addressing this priority, elected officials should consider three important factors: first, increased education regarding organizations and resources that assist residents with finances; second, demand management policies or investments that encourage efficient water use; and third, attentiveness to rate affordability, including measures to discount services provided to the poor.
