Things Above from Fr. Bilot I am at my desk typing this article on Easter Monday morning. The liturgies of the Catholic Church during Holy Week are powerful and allow us to enter deeper into the great mystery of Christ's life, death and Resurrection. The liturgies fill us with hope and expectation. Christ rising from the dead gives us the promise to persevere in life knowing that any destruction, sin or death cannot separate us from the love of Christ. Many look for fulfillment in the things and passions of the world. And, although these may be good in and of themselves, they will not move our soul to spiritual fulfillment. Holy Thursday was beautiful with the washing of the feet and commemorating the institution of the Sacraments of Holy Orders (priesthood) and the Holy Eucharist. These two sacraments sustain the Church on its journey until the Lord comes in glory at the end of time. The somber liturgy of Good Friday reminds us of what deception, lies, betrayal and selfishness can do to distort God's power working in creation. Gratefully, we don't end with Good Friday! At the awesome and inspiring Easter Vigil, we had eight Baptisms, and 21 were welcomed into the Church, receiving the Sacraments of Confirmation and Holy Eucharist. (Three more will be received into the Church on May 4.) The evening was very powerful and impactful, strengthening our faith and belief in the power of the Risen Lord. If you have never had the opportunity to attend an Easter Vigil, I strongly encourage you to do so next year! Finally, with the Sunday liturgies, celebrating the Resurrection of Christ, it was a blessing for Fr. Matt and I to celebrate Mass for all of you. You continue to inspire me by your faith and witness to the faith! Thank you! As you read this, I will be finishing my yearly priest retreat. Know that I held you in prayer each day. As we celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday today, allow the Mercy of the Lord to penetrate your heart so that we can all find strength and courage to live our Christian lives with humility, battle the secularism of our culture, and heal from the clergy sexual abuse crisis. I hope that the massive fire at the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris inspires people to know that the building that could have been destroyed was not. I am confident this was through the protection of our Blessed Mother. Mary so desires those who walk through those church doors will be touched by the Holy Spirit to return to their faith. Many see Notre Dame as a historic museum to wander through and see great architecture. It was not built to be admired as a historic building, but built to give honor and glory to the Lord. It was built with grandeur so that when we entered its massive space, we knew we were small and insignificant to the power of Almighty God. I pray that the French people, who left the Church in droves over the last few decades, will see this as an opportunity to return to their faith and to the Sacraments. I pray we, too, will reach out to those who have drifted from the faith and invite them to trust in the mercy of the Lord to bring them closer to His Sacred Heart.

Finally, with the ending of Lent, I was hoping to have concluded our annual parish almsgiving of contributing to the CSA. However, to date we have raised $113,800 with a goal of $245,863; thus, we have $132,043 to go. If you have not contributed to the Archdiocesan CSA, please help us reach our goal! Thanks. Blessings of Easter Joy, Fr. Jim Bilot

“All grace flows from mercy, and the last hour abounds with mercy for us. Let no one doubt concerning the goodness of God; even if a person’s sins were as dark as night, God’s mercy is stronger than our misery. One thing alone is necessary; that the sinner set ajar the door of his heart, be it ever so little, to let in a ray of God’s merciful grace, and then God will do the rest.” (Diary of St. Faustina #1507)

Divine Mercy Sunday Today, the Universal Church celebrates Divine Mercy Sunday. Pope St. John Paul II had a strong devotion to Divine Mercy and the revelations that were granted to St. Faustina Kowalkska in the beginning of the 20th century. Being from Poland, St. John Paul knew of the devotion to Divine Mercy and promoted it throughout his life. He had the privilege of canonizing St. Faustina in 2000, dedicating the 2nd Sunday of Easter as “Divine Mercy Sunday” and he died immediately following the celebration of the Vigil Mass of Divine Mercy Sunday, celebrated at his bedside, on April 2, 2015. On this day, the Church offers the privilege of obtaining a plenary indulgence. Here are the conditions for obtaining an indulgence this Divine Mercy Sunday (from EWTN): I. The usual conditions for every plenary indulgence: Sacramental Confession [according to previously issued norms, within about 20 days before or after]  Eucharistic Communion [according to previously issued norms, preferably on the day, or the days before or after]  prayer for the intentions of Supreme Pontiff [certain prayers are not specified] 

II. The specific conditions for this Indulgence On Divine Mercy Sunday  in any church or chapel, in a spirit that is completely detached from the affection for a sin, even a venial sin, take part in the prayers and devotions held in honor of Divine Mercy  or, in the pr esence of the Blessed Sacr ament exposed or reserved in the tabernacle, recite the Our Father and the Creed, adding a devout prayer to the merciful Lord Jesus (e.g. Merciful Jesus, I trust in you!) Those who cannot go to church or the seriously ill Conditions for a Plenary Indulgence:  totally detesting any sin,  the intention of fulfilling as soon as possible the three usual conditions of Confession, Communion and prayers for the Holy Father  recite the Our Father and the Creed before a devout image of Our Merciful Lord Jesus  pray a devout invocation to the Merciful Lord Jesus (e.g. Merciful Jesus, I trust in you). If it is impossible to do even this:  with a spiritual intention unite with those carrying out the prescribed practice for obtaining the Indulgence in the usual way and  offer to the Merciful Lord a prayer and the sufferings of their illness and the difficulties of their lives, with the resolution to accomplish as soon as possible the three conditions prescribed to obtain the plenary indulgence. Fr. Matthew Hood

SVdP Sacred Heart/Divine Child SVdP Receives Grant!

The Sacred Heart/Divine Child SVdP was recently honored by being awarded a grant by the Bingham Family Foundation of St. Clair Shores. The grant is expected to overcome the shortfall in our “food category” as well as the “delinquent rent” category, two issues that, commonly, are experienced by the needy. By addressing these issues, we attempt to strengthen the needy family, to give them a “hand up” during hard times, and thereby positively impacting the community as a whole. This is the first grant that the Conference has received, and hopefully, many more will follow. With the grace of God, we are humbled and sincerely grateful by this action and firmly believe that philanthropic gestures such as this are bestowed with blessings from God. Please remember the poor box in the back of church. As always, God bless. ~Mindy Delano

FOR IT IS IN GIVING THAT WE RECEIVE!

Let me begin by stating we could not do the wonderful work that we do as a council without the dedication of our Brother Knights, their wives and families. It is also for the generosity of the parishioners of Divine Child and others who helped support our semi-annual Tootsie Roll Drive with a donation. Thank-you to all the Knights and their families who collected donations; and to all of you who helped by dropping money into our containers on Palm Sunday Weekend. The monies raised will support statewide camps, centers and housing, Special Olympics as well as our own Instructional Support Programs here in our Divine Child Schools. I humbly thank all of you for supporting another successful drive. It is also the dedication and volunteer hours of our Knights who set-up and worked the Chess Tournament we held back in January. This event is always anticipated by the different Chess Clubs from around the diocese. We host schools from north, east, south and west and we proudly display our fine facilities and hospitality. It is this event that affords the council the ability to award two Chess Scholarships. A five-hundred dollar scholarship is awarded to one 7th and one 8th grade DCES Chess Club member who will attend the Divine Child Schools in the fall. This marks the sixth year that Bishop Foley Council has awarded the scholarships, totaling $6,000 over the years! This year the scholarships were awarded to 8th Grader Josh Bustamante who will be attending DCHS next year and 7th Grader Connor Morrow who will be returning to DCES next year. Sister Cecilia Bondy was present with Foley Grand Knight Dominic Raona and Foley Program Director and Deputy Grand Knight Ronald Broekman. The smile on Sister’s face was a true testament of her pride for her student’s and the Chess program that continues to be an active group in the school. We cannot give if we don’t receive. It is the few fundraisers we have throughout the year that allows us to put together our programs and help others. Bishop Foley Council supports many programs here in the parish and throughout the community. Our growing council is allowing us to take on more programs, raise more funds and help more people. As Catholic men, we are all called to be Jesus to others. Foley Knights have fun while doing great things, just ask one of them! If you are a Catholic man over 17-1/2 years old, you are invited to join Foley Council. Maybe you are an inactive Knight who sees the great things we are doing and would like to become part of the order again. Please call our Membership Director Steve Lentz 313-949-5132, or talk to any Foley Knight. There will be future degrees coming up soon.

Right to Life - LIFESPAN Inspiration and TRUTH! “If a man loses reverence for any part of life, he will lose his reverence for all life.” - Albert Schweitzer “An abortion requires an operation. It kills the life of a baby after it has begun. It is dangerous to your life and health. It may make you sterile, so that when you want that child, you cannot have it.” Taken from a Planned Parenthood pamphlet from 1965 - the truth! “The only thing for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” - Edmund Burke “I will give no deadly medicine to anyone if asked, nor suggest such counsel, and in like manner, I will not give to a woman a pessary to produce abortion.” -The Oath of Hippocrates (Doctor’s oath) “To sin by silence when one should protest makes cowards of men.” - Abraham Lincoln

Detroit Catholic Young Adults

Easter Small Group Bible Studies

Once a week for 6 weeks starting April 29 through June 3.

Check out the link to sign up on our Facebook page: Detroit Catholic Young Adults or go to https://forms.gle/TGoc7rzujT9BJwLt9. Celebrate the Easter season by getting closer to the Risen Jesus and making authentic friendships through our Easter small group Bible studies! These small group Bible studies are opportunities for shared encounters with God through prayerful reading and discussion of His Word with other young adults. You absolutely do not need any experience or expertise in the Bible or theology. A leader will facilitate the group, and then we expect the Holy Spirit to do great things. The small groups will be separate men’s and women’s groups (open to ages 18-35). Meetings will be about 1 ½ hours, once a week, for 6 weeks of the Easter season. Available options will be limited by the response we receive and available group facilitators. No obligations if the times or locations don't work for you. The small groups will be starting very soon, so sign up now for this experience of God's grace!

"We continue to pray for the victims of the terrorist attacks in Sri Lanka, for the repose of the souls lost, healing for the wounded and comfort for all those affected by this horrific violence,” he said. “I find myself too often responding to acts of hate with calls for unity, but today I once again pray that we may make the world a place of tolerance and acceptance of people of all religions. It is with sorrow and shared grief, but eyes fixed on Jesus and hearts full of hope in the power of the Resurrection, that we pray for healing and peace for the people of Sri Lanka.” Archbishop Allen Vigneron April 21, 2019

Let love be sincere; hate what is evil, hold on to what is good; love one another with mutual affection; anticipate one another in showing honor. Do not grow slack in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, endure in affliction, persevere in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the holy ones, exercise hospitality. Bless those who persecute [you], bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Have the same regard for one another; do not be haughty but associate with the lowly; do not be wise in your own estimation. Romans 12:5-16b
