Things Above from Fr. Bilot PALM SUNDAY Palm Sunday is the final Sunday of Lent, the beginning of Holy Week, and commemorates the triumphant arrival of Christ in Jerusalem, days before he was crucified. Palm Sunday is known as such because we will receive palm branches, which we use to participate in the reenactment of Christ's arrival in Jerusalem. In the Gospels, Jesus entered Jerusalem riding a young donkey to the high praise of the townspeople who threw clothes, or possibly palms or small branches, in front of Him as a sign of homage. This was a customary practice to welcome people of great respect. It should be known, as well, that the crowds that welcomed Jesus into Jerusalem were not the inhabitants of Jerusalem who cried for His crucifixion; they were outsiders that came into the city. As Catholics, we can take things for granted and don't even ask why. For instance, why do we use palm branches? Palm branches are a widely-recognized symbol of peace and victory -- hence, their preferred use on Palm Sunday. Having a donkey instead of a horse is highly symbolic -- it represents the humble arrival of someone in peace, as opposed to arriving on a stallion in war. Because of the many aspects of life, and the changing of cultural norms, the significance of Holy Week has diminished. For example, people leave for vacation, or they have to work because businesses don't shut down for these holy days, or people have lost interest or don't think it is relevant to their lives. For whatever reason, it is important that we continue to hold on to these holy days. They are important to us because they help us grow in our spiritual lives -- grow deeper in our relationship with Jesus. As I mentioned last week, I am asking you to come and attend these various holy days given to us by our holy Mother Church. If you haven't taken advantage already, Monday is the last day to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. This Sacrament is crucial to open our hearts to listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit speaking through the sacred liturgies. The Mass of the Lord's Supper is one of my favorite liturgies where we celebrate the institution of the Sacrament of the Most Holy Eucharist, the institution of the Sacrament of Holy Orders (Priesthood), and the call to service. Following the Mass, from approximately 8:30 p.m. until 11:45 p.m., the church will be open for quiet adoration/prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. If you have never attended, please come for a while. You don't have to stay the whole time. For those who choose to, we pray Night Prayer at 11:45 p.m. On Good Friday, we commemorate the Passion of the Lord. We walk with Him again on his journey to Calvary, where we witness His death, pray for the needs of the world, and receive nourishment through the Eucharist (consecrated on Holy Thursday evening because there is no Mass allowed on Good Friday). Then, we sit and wait in silence. Death.

Stillness. Emptiness fills our hearts, because Jesus is in the tomb. We do nothing but mourn how our sin has cast Jesus into the depths of darkness. But then, on Holy Saturday night, we celebrate with the blessing of fire, illuminate the dark church with the Paschal Candle, listen to the Scriptures, and then welcome 25 people into the Catholic Church. Please join us for this most holy and spectacular night of faith and life! Sunday is Easter -- we celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead: the culmination of Christ's life. We will rejoice in Christ's victory! Please join me in this most Holy Week of the year. The complete schedule is on page five of this bulletin. Also, I wanted to let you know that Fr. Tom Urban is currently addressing a personal matter. For now, what this means for us at Divine Child is that he will not be assisting with Masses, Confessions, etc., nor will he assist with Holy Week services. While he is limited in some aspects of his priestly ministry, Fr. Urban will continue to live at Divine Child so you may still see him around from time to time. In Anticipation of Things Hoped for in Christ, Fr. Jim Bilot

The Holiest of Weeks One of the greatest privileges about my time in seminary is that we were able to be on retreat during Holy Week. The silence and contemplation of a retreat during Holy Week is not quite possible for a parish priest though! Nonetheless, as we enter this very sacred week of commemorating the Paschal Mystery, the Lord’s passion, death, and resurrection, I encourage you all to find time for silence. The mysteries that we celebrate, the Last Supper and agony in the garden on Holy Thursday, the passion and death of Christ on Good Friday, and the Resurrection of Christ on Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday, speak for themselves if we give ourselves the time and space to contemplate them. Someone asked me recently why the Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil) are not holy days of obligation, which was a very good question. My thought is that the Church has the expectation that these days would automatically be the main priority of our lives. With that in mind, consider which liturgies during this sacred week that you will make a priority in your life. The greatest joy of the Church during this week is the Baptisms, Confirmations and First Communions that we will be celebrating for the individuals who will be received into the Church. Please remember to keep them in your prayers! Fr. Matthew Hood

Behold the Wood of the Cross, on which hung the Salvation of the World. Try to enter into this sacred silence. Gaze at the crucifix, and see the love that brought Jesus there. Imagine his silent testimony as he stood before His accusers. Let His silence wash over you and fill you with wonder, gratitude and love. Remember, Jesus did all this for you. Prayer to Our Lady of Sorrows O Mother of Sorrows, who could express the cruel anguish of this moment? The same child that you once wrapped in swaddling clothes amidst unspeakable joy, you now wrap silently in his burial shroud.
Your tears mingle with the blood and dirt that covers his broken body. But even in this moment your trust in His promise did not die. Your mourning was not without hope, for you knew that He would rise again from His grave just as He promised. Through this bitter sword of sorrow obtain for us the grace to believe with unshakable hope in the victory of our Lord, even in the darkest moments of life. Amen

Holy Saturday The Lightness of Angels God sends holy angels to announce two great events that mark Christ’s life. Angels, of course, appear at his birth, where they herald the joyful news that peace has arrived for people of good will. Angels also appear at Christ’s empty tomb, where they instruct Mary Magdalene and the other Mary about Christ’s Resurrection. In both instances, angels bring God’s light to the world. The contemporary mood pays little attention to angels as messengers of God. The sad feature of this development results in our forgetting that God does speak to us. When we forget the lightness of angels, we find ourselves ghettoized in a dark corner of the universe. We forget that divine revelation opens up for us truths that otherwise we would never even suspect. Think of the women who came to the tomb at Easter daybreak in order to mourn a dead man. Instead, angels revealed them that he is risen. Twice the holy women are told, Do not be afraid. These words ring as true today as they did when the two Marys first heard them. Truth to tell, when we try to figure out things for ourselves, we oftentimes become consternated. Who can solve every problem? Who can meet every need? Holy Saturday prepares us for a new way of life, one that holy angels guide with their own lightness. Reflection based on Matthew 28:1-10 Father Romanus Cessario, O.P.
Gracious Father, send Your holy angels to enlighten me. Keep me from falling prey to the fears that assail me. Grant me the grace to rejoice in the Resurrection of Your Son.

WE MUST DIE TO BE BORN INTO ETERNAL LIFE This weekend, as we progress through the long Mass of the Passion with the first Gospel praising Jesus as He enters into Jerusalem, and then stand through the long interactive Gospel of the Passion of our Lord, we can sum up all of Holy Week in this one Mass. But we would be cheating ourselves if we did not participate in the beautiful services of Holy Week. We start Holy Thursday when the holy oils are blessed and the chrism is consecrated at the cathedral at the Chrism Mass; representatives from parishes around the diocese attend and bring the holy oils back to their parish to use throughout the year. Mass is then celebrated that evening in Catholic churches around the world. It is the last Mass the church will celebrate until Easter Vigil. The Mass of the Last Supper celebrates two things: the institution of the Eucharist and Priesthood. Oftentimes, the priest or pastor will recommit to his vocation at this Mass. The priest then washes the feet of twelve men from the parish to represent Jesus washing His disciples’ feet. It is a reminder that we are all called to serve one another. The Mass ends with a procession through the church with the Blessed Sacrament (Jesus Himself in the Eucharist). The procession ends with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament being placed on the altar of repose. The side altar is beautifully adorned with flowers and there Jesus stays until midnight when He is removed to the sacristy. This is the time for us to adore our Lord and wait and watch with Him as He asked His disciples to do in the Garden of Gethsemane. As a day of fast, we are reminded of the significance of Good Friday. The solemnness of the Good Friday Service (not a Mass) allows us to venerate the cross and again relive the interactive Gospel Passion. Collective prayers allow the whole church to pray for the world, for unity of Christians, for people of other faiths and even for those who do not believe in God. There is no consecration, but the service ends with Communion that was consecrated at the Holy Thursday Mass the previous night. Holy Saturday invites families to come together in tradition for the blessing of the Easter baskets. In years past, churches would be filled with people bringing their Easter food to be blessed. Sometimes parishes would have two or three different times for the blessings. As the day progresses and evening sets in, the church prepares for the Easter Vigil Mass. Starting when it becomes dark, the long Mass retraces the history of the Church and our salvation. From the blessing of light, water and readings that take us from Creation, Exodus all the way to Jesus’ Resurrection! We welcome newly Baptized Catholics and confirm others who have not received their Sacraments. It is a long Mass, but if you are able to attend and stay up late, you will not regret it. Easter Morning Masses continue to celebrate the Resurrection of our Lord. It is a time to renew our own Baptismal Promises. Without Jesus’ Resurrection, we would not have 2000 years of faith. Think of that! The Holy Spirit has guided the Church through 2000 years of ups and downs. The current crises that the Church is in are no different from the history we have endured. Yet the Holy Spirit continues to guide those who choose to believe. So as we prepare for Holy Week, let’s remember that we call it Holy Week for a reason. It is the most solemn time in the Church Calendar. Without the Passion of our Lord, there would be no Resurrection; without darkness in our lives there is no awakening; without winter there is no spring. Let’s look at this Easter as a rebirth, an awakening and a new spring. I hope your Lent was a good Lent and a time of reflection and preparedness as we celebrate Easter together next week. This weekend is our Annual Palm Sunday Tootsie Roll Collection for the people who need our help because of a developmental or intellectual disability. Please be generous to your parish Knights! Thank you in advance.
