Things Above from Fr. Bilot I was deeply saddened by the news last week of the mass shooting in New Zealand. How can a human being, made in the image and likeness of God, turn from goodness and see nothing but disdain in our brothers and sisters of another culture and religion? We may have our differences, and we may not agree on theology or ideology, but it does not give us the permission to disrespect the sanctity of human life. In our own community, people just desire to live in peace and care for one another. I know that there are those of us who disregard diversity or find a reason to mistrust. We have had our own issues with a Dearborn Heights resident who started a strip-mall on fire because of his disrespect for our neighbors’ religious/cultural beliefs. Living together in one community, and learning one another's similarities and differences, dispels fear and trepidation and allows us to live in peace and good will. Please continue to pray for the victims of the horrible hate crime in New Zealand and for the perpetrator. Our prayers are needed to help him see through the eyes of God and not through the eyes of darkness, evil and fear. Together, I pray that we will continue to support one another in our diversity, knowing that all of us are made in the image and likeness of God. Next weekend, there will be envelopes in the pews for the annual Catholic Relief Services appeal. CRS is a wonderful organization where the dollars contributed go directly to the relief cause. CRS is pro-life and works with organizations around the world to help poor and vulnerable people overcome emergencies, earn a living through agriculture, and have access to affordable health care. CRS is a worthy organization to which you may give your donations. During this time of Lent, as we embrace Jesus’ request to give alms, we may contribute to the Archdiocesan Catholic Services Appeal (CSA). In giving of our financial resources, I offer a quote by St. Augustine: "God has no need of your money, but the poor have. You give it to the poor, and God receives it." We give alms because we recognize the blessings from God. Giving isn't so much about our generosity as it is acknowledging God's generosity to us and surrendering to Him. Please make your thoughts on almsgiving part of your daily prayer so that what we give is truly a gift to the Lord. The Archdiocese of Detroit is privileged to host the relic of St. John Vianney, the patron saint of the parish priest. His incorruptible heart will be at St. John Vianney parish in Shelby Township. The relic will also be at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, Detroit, on Sunday, March 31, from noon to 4 p.m. I recommend taking the opportunity to learn more about St. John Vianney and venerating the relic at one of the two sites while it is here in the Archdiocese. Know of my prayers as we continue to move forward during this holy time of Lent. Fr. Jim Bilot

Stations of the Cross My first memory of Stations of the Cross was when we went as a class for Religious Ed. I remember how it was interesting and intriguing to walk with Jesus along the way of His Passion. However, even though I found Stations interesting, I have always found it difficult to pray and a bit tedious. The meditations seemed too repetitive and there didn’t seem to be time to reflect until being ushered on to the next Station. Since leading Stations as a priest, my perspective has changed significantly, and it is a devotion that I both look forward to and find great consolation in praying. Stations of the Cross find their origin in Jerusalem as the Christians in the first few centuries of the Church would remember the Passion of Christ by walking the same path that Jesus would have taken through the city of Jerusalem. It is along this path that the first Christians would have remembered, “this is the place where Jesus fell,” “this is where he met His mother,” etc. As time went on, the practice of remembering the way that Jesus walked became a more and more established devotion. Today, every Friday, the Franciscans in the Holy Land lead the Stations of the Cross through the Old City of Jerusalem and end in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher at the Mount of Calvary. The change in me that has caused me to love and look forward to Stations is that I have been able to realize more how Stations of the Cross allow us to physically enter into the via crucis (Way of the Cross). It is an attempt to relive, in miniature, a pilgrimage to Old Jerusalem and walk with Jesus to the Cross. The more often I pray the Stations, the more often each of the individual Stations resonate with me. I see my own disobedience and weakness as Jesus falls three times. I see how Jesus invites me to share in suffering with Simon of Cyrene. I see how much I need to rely on the Blessed Mother as I contemplate the gaze between mother and son along the way to His death. This year, we have purchased new books for Stations of the Cross as the old books were getting worn and had somewhat antiquated language. The new books are only kind of new because they are the reflections that were written by St. Alphonsus Liguori, a Doctor of the Church, and the founder of the Redemptorist Order. His meditations are accessible and allow for the opportunity to ponder Passion in a powerful way. If you have not been to Stations this Lent or in a little while, I would encourage you to join us. Stations of the Cross are every Friday during Lent at 7 PM. Fr. Matthew Hood

Christian Service Commission Meeting Monday, April 1 at 7pm MPR in the Elementary School East Entrance With Special Guest Speakers from

Strangers No Longer

The Christian Service Commission will sponsor a presentation by "Strangers No Longer," a network of parish-based Circles of Support who respond to the biblical and papal exhortations to receive immigrants as our brothers and sisters. The name comes from “Strangers No Longer Together on the Journey of Hope, A Pastoral Letter Concerning Migration from the Catholic Bishops of Mexico and the United States (2003).” Many local Catholics have formed Circles of Support in our parishes to respond with Education in the parish, Accompaniment of immigrants among us, and Advocacy for local and national polices and practices toward immigrants. Our guest speakers will be Cesar Cuellar and Carmen Luna of Gesu Parish who fled their home in El Salvador in 2017 and are applying for asylum in the US. They will describe their work in El Salvador and why they left to come here and apply for asylum. They will be joined by Gesu parishioner Bill O'Brien, who helps coordinate the Strangers No Longer parish network. For more information, please contact: Marisa Szpytman, 313-561-7566.

Meet Candidate Lisa Finnerty: Despite being r aised in a Pr otestant home, I have always felt dr awn to the Catholic Church. As I began my journey with RCIA, that magnetic connection was further solidified with every new teaching I was introduced to. I feel so blessed to have experienced this with my daughter and son-in-law and have grown closer to them as I have with God. I will be forever grateful for this experience and the way it has strengthened my faith more than ever before. Lisa’s Sponsor Rosemary Finnerty: When my sister -in-law Lisa asked me to be her sponsor, I didn’t hesitate for a moment. I cannot think of a better candidate. Lisa is from a very close-knit, faith-based family who care for each other as well as others. We as Catholics should be very honored that she has chosen our church. I have no doubt in my mind that Lisa will be a great asset to our Catholic family. Meet Candidate Kari Rennie: I am the wife of Denis Rennie and mother of two beautiful childr en, Kr istian and Kar a. Kr istian attends second grade at Divine Child and Kara will be starting Kindergarten this year in the fall. I believe my call to Catholicism began in the early 2000’s. I was a Peace Corps Volunteer based in Grenada in the Eastern Caribbean where Denis and I met. Denis was raised Catholic, I was raised Lutheran, and I always felt the religions where not that different until now :) Our son Kristian was born in Grenada and baptized in the same small Catholic Church that Denis was baptized in. I attended that church while we lived there as the Lutheran Church was over an hour away. The Catholic Mass became familiar and comfortable to me. When our family returned to the United States in 2012, I knew that when Kristian reached the age of needing to attend school that I wanted him to attend DC. I again felt drawn to the faith without knowing why but always trusting God. I have left many of my large life decisions up to God and where I feel he calls me and when Kristian was accepted into DC for Kindergarten, I knew the next step was drawing closer. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Sister Cecilia for sitting with me about a year ago today informing me of RCIA and Jodi Ann and sharing with me The Road Ahead by Thomas Merton which I read daily! Because of my family and them, my official journey to becoming Catholic and closer to God began, and I haven’t regretted a minute since. Learning about the Saints and the Sacraments have all flowed easily and makes sense. I know this is where I am meant to be, and I look forward to our family becoming a permanent part of the Divine Child faith community.

Last month, family and friends gathered at the high school to honor coach Gabby Keeley. Gabby was a beloved daughter, friend and DCHS girls’ basketball coach, who passed away suddenly on September 8, 2018. A memorial plaque has been placed on the basketball scorekeepers table, honoring her memory. She will be forever in our hearts.

THE LONG JOURNEY HAS PAID OFF

“…we know nothing of certainty, but the sight of STARS makes us dream!” Last week’s membership meeting turned out to be a cause of celebration for Bishop Foley Council and the thirty-three members in attendance. KofC Field Agent Jim Salliotte was present at the meeting to present awards to Foley Council that were distributed at the Membership Tribute Dinner held last month. The council was awarded the State Chaplains Award for the 2018/19 fraternal year. The State Chaplains Award is granted to councils who have attained 100% of their membership goal. Foley’s 2018/19 membership goal was nine new members. At the time of the presentation, Foley had already surpassed that goal with a total of eleven new members! Jim Salliotte presented the award to Foley Membership Director Steve Lentz who has worked hard in growing the council since he took the position. To date, Foley has a total of eighteen new members which is double the Supreme generated goal of nine, and positions the council to achieve the prestigious Double Star Council Award for a second consecutive year. Jim Salliotte also had a box with another award. The Double Star Council Award is bestowed upon councils who achieve 200% of their membership goal. The Star Council Award is the highest distinction any council can achieve. It takes into consideration membership and insurance growth as well as programming activities reported in each of the six program categories of our “Surge with Service” program. Only 1,628 out of 17,000 councils Order-wide achieved Star Council Status. It is a great honor for any council to achieve. This award was for the previous fraternal year of 2017-18! The council needs two more insurance members to achieve the 2018 -19 Double Star Award. So if you need to meet with Jim Salliotte (734-624-7266) please get ahold of him quickly and see how you can be an insurance member of the Knights of Columbus and help the council achieve Double Star again! Foley Grand Knight Dominic Raona accepted the plaque on behalf of ALL the Foley Knights who worked hard in the previous fraternal year to achieve this great award. It is the men of the council, along with their wives and families, in many cases, who continue to grow the council with strong programs and fraternal bonding. Along with the plaque, there were three lapel pins given out. One for the Grand Knight, Membership Director and Program Director (Ronald Broekman) which will be presented to them at the District 5 Clergy Appreciation Dinner. Do you want to be part of this growing and active council? If you have been thinking about joining Foley Council, call Steve Lentz our Foley Membership Director at 313-9495162. We are hoping to have another Major Degree in late Spring. Remember you must be at least a 1 st Degree member to attend meetings.

Right to Life – LIFESPAN “They Say… You Say…” If you ever have the opportunity to attend a seminar called “They Say… You Say…” instructed by Oliva Gans Turner, you must attend! It is a very informative and inspiring session. The seminar contains some tips on having constructive conversations about abortion and much more. People will normally take away from an abortion discussion 60% what it looked like, 30% sounded like, and 10% the words said. This is the “60-30-10 Factor.” This is why it is important to smile and listen which are the most powerful tools for communicating. It is also important to note the words you use. Instead of ‘choice,’ say ‘decisions,’ ‘alternatives,’ or ‘options.’ Don’t say ‘clinic,’ ‘hospital’ or ‘mill’ when referring to an abortion facility. By choosing our words wisely, we can more effectively create the image and message we want to convey.
